Steam Deck: Protect Yourself - Backup and Restore Your Game Saves Easily With This Tool

- There are a dozen ways you can lose your valuable saves for your games on Steam; bad/poor/corrupt cloud saves, missing cloud saves, user error, failed manual backups, storage failure - the sky is the limit.
Cloud saves can get out of sync or not be present at all. The only way you can be 100% sure of keeping your hard-earned game efforts safe is to back them up yourself.
Enter LuduSavi. This tool not only helps you do this backup en masse - it is super fast, super easy (meaning you might ACTUALLY do it like you're supposed to) and totally free of charge. As a bonus? No hokey pokey to get it working.
Let's install, explore and test this incredibly valuable tool!
NOTE: A reminder - this is a manual backup tool. You have to run it to capture the latest saves. It will not magically backup your saves when you're not directly using it.
Hey, thanks for the shout-out :D This is a great intro to the app.
Ludusavi can back up non-Steam saves too. It mainly depends on the roots you configure on the "other" screen. For example, on Windows, Ludusavi can auto-detect `C:\Program Files\EA Games` as an EA root. Not sure what the Linux equivalent would be, but I'm happy to help if you run into any issues.
Wow this was a huge time saver! I'm sorta new to the Tech world and have been having problems with my saves since getting the Steam Deck the files can be hard to navigate through for a novice like my self. Thanks so much for simplifying a nightmarish task!!!
Glad to be of service!
Although its a bit longer I just use my Nas I made that back ups all cloud saves!
Its a `extension on decky im sure
I'm increasingly impressed at the unpredictability of dunkeys videos
Uh ... THANKS .. I think?
@@Darkuni wrong video woops but hey take it as a compliment either way
Looks like an excellent tool. 1 stop backups. Will install it later tonight. :)
Thank you so much. I found out the hard way that Dark Souls Series doesn’t support cloud saves so I manually copied my dark souls saves after each session and sometimes returning to game mode crashed my deck. This‘ll come in handy using it in game mode.
Edit: works flawlessly in game mode, thanks again. And it’s also easy to exit (other>exit).
Can you sync between deck and PC?
@@bobfunk5055 when you use a usb drive, yeah. Although I wouldn’t call it "syncing"
There’s also a cloud function, but I didn’t try because you need a second program
Hello,
So im planning to factory reset my steam deck but I don’t want lose any of my game data from my saved games, all Steam games from the store. Is this what I should do to have my save data after factory resetting Steam Deck?
Exactly what i was looking for before installing new ssd. Thanks
No problem 👍Glad to be of help!
Will this help me find my Dark Souls remastered save? I can't find where the save is stored to back up and copy the save 😅
How do you change the File Path of your backup folder? Like you, I also want to move the path to my SD card instead of my internal memory. Thanks.
Your location will be nearly the same - except in run/media/deck there will be a long guid number folder or a folder with the name of your SD card. Then create a folder in there for the saves! Should be good!
@@Darkuni I mean, the app doesnt give me the option to change paths. From the normal linux explorer, after making a folder in my SD Card, how can I make the app recognize that path. I mean, can you give me step by step guide for this dummy? Its tough when the deck doesnt have a real physical keyboard or enter key. I just click here and there with my mouse and its kinda frustrating 🤣.
@@mercurytoad I'm not 100% sure where the question is. There is a little icon that lets you select the folder: imgur.com/AbajD9N
I tried ludusavi but something isn't right.. when i looked at the backup file until the very end, its empty.
The file ends on deck. No appdata folder.
I know this is an older video, but sort of a general game save question...
Some steam games save in the windows registry - how does the steam deck handle that?
I know in windows I can use regedit to find the SOFTWARE section for the game. What does steamos do on the steamdeck with registry entries?
Great video by the way - thanks.
Thanks! They are located in *.reg files located in the proton prefix folder for the game. If you go in there, before you get to "drive_C", you'll see them.
Do you know if running a game with a specific Proton version affect the save file?
For example lets say I’m running Elden Ring with Proton Experimental and make a back up save, then try restore it while running Elden Ring without Proton. Could it possibly mess with my saves?
I’ve put it insane amount of hours into some games and I’m just terrified of messing things up and losing my saves
Changing protons can wipe the prefix. Gotta be careful. I would use LuduSavi to make and store backups instead of doing it yourself. Be safe - don't lose all your progress!
Awesome, specially because on some games that supposedly support cloud saves, that doesn't work at all. Though I read that sometimes is because of the Deck installing the Linux version of the game and those saves wont work with its windows version counterpart, but who knows.
I guess for non-Steam games you could add the path for their prefix folder, or there is a better solution?
If enough people ask for it, I'll do an "add a non-steam game save" video for this tool. I have a backlog of videos right now - in various states - I gotta get them all done :D
Would this work if I tried it from my steam deck and try to load my saved games to a legion go?
I was told that Ludusavi on Linux and Windows are not 100% compatible. I've never tried it PERSONALLY though. If you do try it? Let us know if it works!
What about when deck asks to format sd card on any situation if it happens?
I'm not sure I understand. You're saying when you use Ludusavi it asks you to format your card?
Nope just lost 20h, please tell people that this doesn’t take auto backups or add this part. Because i added this 4 days ago backup up, this night suddenly AC revelations crashed and all data was lost, thought oh I’m save i have Ludusavi, but all i had was the backup of 4 days ago
If/When I refresh this video, I will certainly emphasis it. I added a note to the description. Sorry for your loss :(
Will this help when installing a new SSD in the steam deck? I am planning on doing backup on SD card
Just make sure your saves are on the SD card and not on the SSD :D
Great, thanks!@@Darkuni
Is there a way to transfer the save game to another game (quacked to bought)?
Yes I have a tutorial about finding the Windows folder on Steam Deck. The data you need should be contained within that video.
I just formatted my steam deck because this stupid brick keep sleeping and turn off for absolutely no reason. After trying countless solutions online, none of it works.
Anyway so i formatted it. I thought the save files would be where i put the games in, in the sd card. I guess not because my saves gone. I thought that's why we had steam cloud save for. But there's steam cloud save.. its fking from 6 Jan like a week ago. I swear it sync everytime i played the game, but apparently it fking not. This is bs man.
I'm playing rainworld, godforsaken. It's still pain in my ass to get play again but lesson learned i guess. Today i'll be away from home so i can't bring or play it. When I'm done working, I'll play that horror game again ayayay
be good if this can support Emudeck consoles going forward
Thanks dude. I'll try it! :)
Mine says there are 0 games. Was your 28 games just on there?
@@jacket6139 yeah I didn't have to do anything crazy. Hmm
So I have to manually backup my saves after every game I play, everytime I play the deck? That's obnoxious as hell I want to pick up the deck and play not worry about damn saves everytime I want to play a game. Kind of regretting the steamdeck, my nintendo switch never once messed up save data but my steamdeck that I've had for less than a month has messed up several games' save data... Making me start a new game when It shows I have several hours of time played.
It totally sucks. There are people who have lost 50+ hours of play. Backup would be worth it. Check out my other video: ruclips.net/video/-CaSRbgLeBQ/видео.html This isn't as robust, but much MUCH easier
I'm in the same boat. Have the Deck only 3 weeks & it's already faulty. RMA process is a real pain. Came here thinking backups would be easy, now that i have to return the bloody thing. But this backup process is a nightmare. I got rid of my Switch Oled to get a Deck but i shouldn't have. The software is a cumbersome mess. Valve have had 2 years to sort something out & have done nothing. I will never diss Nintendo ever again, now that I've seen the terrible Valve ecosystem in action.
@@frankmacs9379 I don't think I would agree with all of that. If you stick to purpose? The Deck is great. It is when you color outside the lines that the friction starts.
@@frankmacs9379I know everytime I just compare the save issue to the switch like just fkn do what switch did, have never had an issue picking up and playing the same game on two different switches. but with this my PC desktop has different saves than my laptop which has different saves from my steamdeck it's overwhelming lol
@@Darkuni i don't know what you mean. They sent me a faulty steam deck, where the sd card won't stay in place. I now have to find out how to back up my game saves for steam games & non-steam games. Neither process is easy to someone new to Steam & Linux. And I have to learn all this in 2 hours flat because my return label is being emailed to me tonight!
The Steam Deck is a console experience. Valve promote it as such but they haven't built a console ecosystem around it. And what do people who don't own laptops do if they need to do backups? And as the original poster said, having to manually backup saves after every game is ludicrous. People need to start being more truthful on RUclips about what it's really like to own a Steam Deck
Is it possible to save my repacked game non legit steam game?
As in a pirated game? I don't believe Ludusavi supports this. You'll need to find the saves and back them up manually.
Omg your a legend thank you so so much for this video I gave it a like 👍🏼 🙂
Thanks for watching!
Ludusavi doesn't recognise some of my Steam games :(
And its the most important game that I wanted to back up.
Can you be more specific? The author does read these comments, apparently.
Am I missing a step? I installed this to my Steam Deck in desktop mode, but it shows 0 games, even though I have a couple dozen Steam games with save files. I don't see any option for selecting folders to backup, just the folder to back up to.
You do need to hit PREVIEW as seen in timestamp 3:56
That's weird, I tried that before and nothing was coming up, but it's working now. Maybe the difference was because I'm trying it again after I clicked "Add to Steam"?
@@nai3346 So hard to say... But I'm glad you're working.
I'm just glad to see it's working, thanks a lot!
great video! :D
Nice guide
Syncthing its waaay better
Thank you!!
As soon as you said won't help if you have non steam games I stopped watching thanks for the video tho
You can apparently
@SinCat-o8s You can it requires a USB and alot of copying and pasting files I had to find another video for this info
@@viewmaster617 damn bro can't you just find the save folder?
i cant find the save of Death Stranding by ludusavi or other ways。it bother me 3 mouths。Death Stranding is my EPIC games, but i dont want run this game in epic(epic in steamdeck is terrible) so i add it to steam, next run it by GE-Proton7-49 in steam(steamdeck).Proton7-49 is maze。i cant find the save of Death Stranding
You're going to have to learn all about compat data and proton prefixes if you want to find that. My suggestion? Anything that you have on some other service that isn't Steam? Wait for sale, rebuy it on Steam. You'll save a lot of time, energy, frustration.
@@Darkuni thanks,i will find it eventually
