To the generation that was born 10 - 20 years after me, and started watching T20 as their introduction to cricket: I'd like to tell you a few important things about WC 1996, and the Sri Lanka Cricket Team at the time. I was a month shy of 12 years old in may 1996 and I had just started watching cricket(sitting next to my dad) about 3 years before that (1993), and in the years that followed, I started following cricket more intently.
    1. Sri Lanka were minnows at the time. Nobody expected them to win. Their transformation from a weak side to a strong side was something that happened NOT in a publicized way, but quietly, in the early 90s. Kapil Dev (followed by the BCCI) had boycotted SL in the 80s when India lost a test match to SL under very bad circumstances - terrible umpiring, and pitches tailormade for SL bowlers. So SL cricket establishment and the players at the time under Duleep Mendis were extremely angry with BCCI and wanted to teach India a lesson. So, while they were boycotted, the SL team trained, and trained hard, to become a team that can beat any other team under any conditions, and anywhere in the world. That was their goal. Their training was so rigorous that the players had to run on sand to practice running between the wickets. They trained on pitches that were extremely rough, smooth, bouncy tracks and turning tracks. Their Batsmen had learned the art of controlling the game. Their bowlers perfected the variations of bowling legends - for example, Muralitharan took Saqlain Mushtaq's Doosra and perfected it for himself. Other bowlers like Vaas took inspiration from the likes of Marshall, Imran Khan and others.
    2. As a result of this dedication, Sri Lanka had improved leaps and bounds and most major teams that did not play SL (including India) did not know what kind of team SL they were about to face in WC 1996. But in 1993, there were a few glimpses of Sanath Jayasuriya that some Indian Players got, including the then captain - Mohd. Azharuddin. India played it's first series in SL in 1993, almost 8 years after the 1985 incidents involving some terrible umpiring, India's test series defeat to SL, and Kapil Dev-led boycott began. In 1993, a young captain, Azhar, and his men, played a practice match at Welegedara ground just outside Colombo, against SL Board President's XI. It was a 3 day practice match before the actual series. In that match - a man from Matara, named Sanath Jayasuriya, batting at number 6 for SL Board Pres. XI walked in when his team was struggling at 94-4, and smashed 151 off 239 balls. The match ended in a draw but the way he batted on a difficult pitch and in a low scoring surface made everyone stand up and take notice. A famous sports reporter named Vijay Lokapally later remarked that before that practice game, he was talking to some local Sri lankan Sports journalists and they told him "there is this lefthander from Matara…a crazy fellow. He is known to play some astounding, outrageous shots". Jayasuriya did not come back to the limelight again in that series in 1993. He wasn't in the main SL team for the first 2 tests. The first test was drawn, the second test was won by India with a huge margin. And in the third test, SL made some changes and brought in Sanath Jayasuriya owing to his performance in the practice game. But in the only ICC game Sanath played in that series, he was out for a duck off the bowling of Rajesh Chauhan. India won that 3 test series 1-0. That was an obscure test series and nobody in the mainstream media either noticed or paid much attention to Sanath who was a lower middle order batsman at the time, and he got a duck in his only international test against India. But some people remembered what he was capable of from watching Sanath smash 150+ in the practice 3-day test on a difficult track under very challenging circumstances.
    3. In the years after 1993, Sanath was slowly being promoted up the batting order, and he started performing well at the top - playing freely with no pressure, and piling up lots of risky runs and he made it easier for the middle order to finish games. This later became the SL formula. The idea was to play fast and score quickly in the first 15 overs with the new ball and then allow the middle order to take over and post big totals. This seemed to be working very well for SL and they were suddenly winning more games than they lost.
    4. Come 1996, most people in India, especially the audience, had no clue what the SL cricket team had become. A young boy like me thought that the biggest teams to defeat in cricket at the time were West Indies, Australia, South Africa, England, Pakistan and Zimbabwe. Those were the strongest teams at the time. (believe it or not Zimbabwe was a good team back then, and they were in the habit of regularly beating even South Africa, Australia, WI, England, India and Pakistan). Most people in India considered Sri Lanka as a minnow team, along with the likes of Bangladesh, and that SL had somehow struggled and managed to qualify to the WC. So, I was watching all the India games - there was one league game against SL and it was in Delhi (before the infamous semi final). I watched that game. Sachin played a beautiful knock. Then India posted 271. It was a good total (and being that they were facing SL, I thought it was game over, an easy win for India, and went outside to play cricket with my friends). While we were playing on the street, one of the friends' older sisters came out of her house and told us that SL was hitting fours and sixes and looks like they are gonna win easily. I couldn't believe what she was saying. So I went inside and started watching. SL had already crossed 200 chasing, and they had plenty of overs remaining and plenty of wickets in hand. I couldn't believe that a team like SL can do that to India and with so much ease. SL won and I was upset. Then, the WC went on for a few more weeks until the Semi Final Match. It was India Vs. SL again. And an innocent 12 year old me wanted revenge. I wanted to watch this game and enjoy India blowing SL away and getting revenge for what happened in Delhi a few days ago. The Semi Final was in Eden Gardens. In this game, it looked like India all the way - they got both the openers cheaply, and restricted Sri lanka to a manageable score. India started it's chase and it looked good - Sachin was in his elements and was going at a good strike rate. I thought it was wraps for SL. Then Sachin's wicket fell. Then the other wickets just kept falling quickly, one after the other. It got so bad that the Indian batsmen were struggling to score singles. And the rest is - you know what happened that night. Unruly crowd behavior, the game was awarded to SL by the third umpire. It would have taken a miracle every ball for India to win that game even if the game was allowed to continue anyways. SL got a well deserved victory and went on to win the world cup that year. Although I was heart broken, I learned to appreciate a great player as I grew up.
SL remained a formidable international side until about 2013. But yes, Sanath Jayasuriya changed SL cricket forever. (credit goes to other players and the captain Ranatunga too, but no one person stands out like Jayasuriya).

Even the commentators were shocked at such an assault. When teams scored 50 in first 15 overs those days, Sri Lanka scored 50 in first 5 overs. Tony Greig repeatedly saying " I don't believe it", "This is unbeliavable". Shell shocked Indian bowlers.

From 1996 to late 1998 Sri Lanka was absolutely invincible. Im happy the neighbours convict Australians in that final of 96. If they didn't Autralians would have won 96,2003,2007,2015 and 2023 which would have made them even cockier..

@@amberlight5830 It was a Flat pitch , please note we (India ) scored 70 runs from Last 6 overs of match as we were 200/2 in 44 overs without field restriction. Jayasuriya did with field restriction. India didnt plan well on how to take Jaya and Kalu both are pitch hitters. Anil Kumble could have been asked to bowl after 5 overs.
