It was the first World Cup for legendary right-hand batsman Sachin Tendulkar. On the other hand, many greats, including Kapil Dev, Ian Botham, Ravi Shastri and Graham Gooch, were playing their final ICC World Cup tournament.
In their first 1992 World Cup game, the relatively young Indian team faced off against the England tam, led by Gooch. The game was off to a great start, with India getting Botham’s wicket at just 21. However, the game soon turned in England’s favour after Kiran More dropped Gooch’s catch at 36. the dropped catch was probably the moment when things changed irrevocably in England’s favour.
Gooch went on to score 51 off 89 and create a solid partnership with Robin Smith. After Smith was dismissed for 91, England collapsed, reaching just 236/9 at the end of 50 overs.
The match looked set in India’s favour. When Ravi Shastri and Kris Srikkanth walked on to open for the Men in Blue, there was hope that India would be able to begin their World Cup journey with a win. However, with two quick wickets down at 63 runs, the hope diminished.
Then, Sachin Tendulkar took to the crease. The young batter, who had already earned a formidable reputation, played steadily with Ravi Shastri to take India towards victory. But that was not to be.
England chose Botham to bowl against Tendulkar. Nicknamed Beefy, the right-arm fast bowler was playing his final World Cup. The grizzled all-rounder was facing the Master Blaster for the first time in international cricket. The young batsman was no match for Botham and got dismissed at 35.
With Tendulkar’s wicket, the rest of the Indian side seemed to fold in upon itself. Botham also scalped Vinod Kambli’s wicket, ending with figures of 2/27. The rest of the Indian side fell easily to Dermott Reeve and Phil DeFreitas’ bowling attack and ended all out at 227. India lost the game by nine runs.
Botham was awarded the Player of the Match. The right-arm bowler earned the title ‘Old Lion’, for his performance during the tournament.

Gr8 memories of 92 WC, getting up early to see the matches Live. Those days score of 230/240 was considered good, maintaining a good balance between bat & ball. Just look at the size of the boundaries. Cricket will never be same again 😞

In 1992 WC, India lost against Aus also in a close match. Same like this against England. Many close matches lost. Winning streak was missing and lot of miss communication during running calls.
Later Dada taught how to win the match against big teams when it's our day. Dada brought the winning hunger in the team so after that team always trying to only win the matches

Absolutely correct, was never well treated as he was born in south africa. At the time of dropping , he had a odi avg of close to 40 (considered very good in the 1990s and had just scored 75 in the previous match)

Watched complete match live. Team lacked commitment. Jabardast stadium & playing conditions
This was the very first match of the 92 wc. Still vivid in my memories as a teenager at that time. This was the first ever wc to be played under lights. Indians probably were exhausted coming into the wc after playing a long series in Australia just prior to this tournament. This same bunch used to play in the tri series with aus and wi and imagine the fitness levels of such greats without proper coach and fitness trainers.

Kambli, Azhar, Sastri, were always inconsistent. Bowlers other than Kapil, were hopeless, by bowling too many short pitched, and also down the legside.
You have no clue what you are talking, azhar was the highest scorer for India scoring 373 runs in the 1992 wc, 4 half centuries. Against Australia, South Africa, West Indies, New Zealand and a solid 32 vs Pakistan. Azhar was a classic batsman captain. He just played for the wrong country

It's not south africa but it's India that's the most unlucky team in this wc. We lost two close contests against England and Australia. Had two easy games against Zimbabwe and srilanka washed out. they only had a victory against pak to show. With the kind of lineup we had, we could have easily been to the finals.

The Indian cricket team of 1992 was extremely mediocre. Sachin Tendulkar was finding his feet, but rest of the batsmen were average. The bowling was without sting, what with Kapil Dev at the fag end of his career and Srinath not quite the potent bowler that he was to become in the later part of his career.
The Indian team of 92 World Cup was not weak, the Indian team lost against Australia and England by close margins, its match against Sri Lanka was canceled due to rain. The team was completely balanced, where there were senior players like Kapil Dev and Srikanth and young players like Sachin Jadeja and Srinath. Yes, one thing special about this World Cup was that there was no weak team. Pakistan got lucky and managed to win the cup
