    The Britain’s deal for Belize was made with Guatemala since it was part of them and independent from Mexico. The Brits offered a highway across Guatemala to connect both oceans but they never built it. Currently, there’s a trial to decide if Belize belongs to Guatemala or not.

    Before people start comparing this to other empires. Mexico got this land because it was theirs. It's completely different from Europe and Asia. European and Asian countries got land by making wars. The land Mexico was given, was given when it gained independence. They never invaded another country to gain land.

    After the French Invasion in the 1860s, emperor Napoleon III of France wanted to have some "revenge", so he ordered to get the farrest island of Mexico, that was Clipperton Island.

    For anyone wondering why he put Mexico and not some other country in the video, here's why:
    Colonies of empires held by nations such as Spain and the UK were never considered metropolitan territory. The UK, for instance, still retains its hold on the island of Great Britain and hasn't lost any metropolitan territory since except for most of Ireland which is still far less land Mexico has lost.
    Countries like Mongolia are not the same as they were when they held giant empires. The Mongol Empire is an extremely different state than the modern Mongolia which has only been independent since 1921. Turkey is also in the same situation; the Ottoman Empire was never the same state as modern-day Turkey, and the country has only gained land since the Turkish War of Independence.

    The spanish independence war officially ended on April 17th 1814. At that time only Argentina and Paraguay declared their independence, and Uruguay was in turmoil. As the spanish state lost all the other territories in the Americas, but also in Asia, Oceania and some of them in Africa after that day, we could argue that Spain could also be in the top of this list. 😂

    The All Mexico Movement could’ve turned Mexico into Spanish speaking us states and territories had its congress had more yays than nays instead. But it could’ve been possible had Canada joined the 13 colonies in its fight against Britain for self sovereignty and independence in general. A bilingual country to a tri lingual country.

    For everyone saying Vatican City, this isn’t amount of territory relative to current land area, this is just the sheer amount of territory lost. This answer would still be in correct, it would be the British. They technically, England at least, gained their independence from Rome. Just had to unify manually. They used to own 25% of the world at one point and now look at the small island(s) they are today. (With a few small scattered modern colonies)

    The Commache are the real reason Mexico was not able to hold onto those lands. The Commanche routinely invaded Mexico to raid villages. So, that land ultimately went to the nation that was able to defeat the Commanche and other tribes. And that was thanks to the invention of the Colt revolver.

      We're talking about original territory minus current territory.
      Spain is effectively the continuation of Castille and it grew several times its original size between 1065 and now.
      The UK, the continuation of England founded in 927 is also bigger than England back then.
      France is the continuation of Francia founded in 481, also several times its original size.

    I’m not sure if this counts, because they were a just a small rebellion at one point, but the Ottomans lost over 85% of their territory after WW1. And this isn’t taking into consideration all of the territory they lost from when they were at their peak almost 400 years ago.

      The UK still remains its hold on the island of Great Britain and its colonies were never considered metropolitan territory.
      The USSR is not the same state as the Russian Federation and was a completely different country to modern Russia.
      India has more land than it used to at the brink of its independence.
      Mongolia has only been independent since 1921 and its territory has stayed the same from the time of its independence.
      Turkey has only gained land since the Turkish War of Independence.
