This is scent training for young puppies where to relieve themselves. When you are ready for “house training” you place some of the pine pellets on the ground outside where want them to go and follow normal house training methods. Great question!

I have a four month old Cairn Terrier and I am trying to train her to use a litter tray. She consistently puts her front paws into the tray and then does her business with the back end still outside of the tray so the mess is on the floor. Any tips on how I can train her to get all the way into the tray?
It actually works out real well for house training. The pups have learned there is a specific place for them to do their business. The new owners can put a few pine pellets down on the ground where they want them to go and teach them to use that spot…outside. It’s scent and routine based training. Once the pups realize the place is outside now, they get it. Great question!
I have been trying this for three weeks since the puppies were 3 weeks old. I don't know if English Bulldogs just can't learn as fast or what, but every day is a huge mess. They're not getting the hang of it. There's poop and pee everywhere. I shrunk their gated area, hoping less space would help them narrow down where they're supposed to go. Any other tips?
As long as you’re using the basic pine pellets that I recommend, it’s not a problem. They’re just curious. It won’t hurt them. They don’t see wood as a food source so they’re not going to consume them like food they’re just being curious little puppies, more than likely, I wouldn’t worry about it unless you actually get the feeling that they’re eating them like food in quantity. They might be teething on them. Perhaps give them something else to chew on a puppy safe dog toy that kind of thing.
Not really. It’s just pine so they don’t see it as a food source. They may crunch one up like they would any stick just to check it out, but they are harmless. The pellets revert to powder upon contact with moisture.

I brought her home on a Friday and after quite a few accidents (her not wanting to get into the litter box mainly), I added the pee pad with her urine on it and now she figured to go on the litter box all on her own! This is soo perfect for a small breed dog. Thank you again!
So I had an accidental breeding, but anyways I was told by my vet not to let puppies outside until they are fully vaccinated. I hate puppy pads. My two dogs are trained to go outside. Do I really need to wait untill the puppies get full vaccinated to train them to go outside???
I’m not going to argue with your vet. I’ll just tell you what we do here at our kennel. At 4 weeks we start taking puppies outside once a day (weather permitting) for about 1/2 an hour in a controlled space. A puppy tight fence and momma dog is there too. At 5 weeks we go outside roughly an hour, twice a day. Right after feeding. They usually poop within half an hour after eating. This trains them to eat and poop on a schedule. The litter pan catches the gap in between. We start the vaccines (super 5) at 6 weeks. I hope that helps! 👍 Alan
We compost it. Its 100% biodegradable. Pine sawdust and animal waste. If that isn’t an option then you could bag it and put it in with your trash. Great question!

We did this with our recent 1st litter and it was hugely successful. The puppies figured it out in just two days and by the time they went home they were 100% trained to use the pan (with the occasional exception of the lazy ones who had two feet in and two feet out) ha. I did have a few new families who struggled a little with the transition from litter box to outside (if they were indoor dogs). I tried to find videos on that transition training to give suggestions but found nothing other than just to put pellets outside. One in particular was just so used to going inside in the pan that with the pan not there he would just pee inside on the floor as soon as he came back in from outside. He eventually figured it out but I don't know that it was any easier for them then just starting from scratch with potty training. I am so glad I found this method before our pups got here and was set up and ready. For me as the breeder, I wholeheartedly subscribe to pellet training. It made the job 100% easier.
Help. I started litter pan training about a week ago. I have 1 puppy out of 5 that is using the pan regularly. The rest of the litter is peeing and pooping all over the “kennel.” Any suggestions?
Mainly reinforce what it shows in the video. Put some of their mess in the litter pan along with small pieces of the pee pads which have scent attractant in them. You can also monitor the pups after feeding and put them in the pan when you see them start pooping elsewhere. Persistence and repetition are key here. Good luck!

The litter pans are so great I have a litter now who just turned 8 weeks and the ones who went home already are doing awesome with going potty outside , teaching them to be clean is a game changer
I’ve never used sand so I can’t say for sure, but I don’t see a problem with it. I’m a firm believer in using what you have as long as it works well. So…if sand is what you have, I would use it.
Maybe bury the pee pads under the Pellets? Stop them from using then as toys, or at least detour them. Great video, I never actually say this technique before. Appreciate the content, I am going to try this with my 4 Week old Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) litter.
I’ve tried this thinking the same thing, and it’s definitely worse lol They’ll grab it from under the pellets and drag it out of the tray, which drags all of the pellets out too. Teething puppies are crafty and they will manage to find even your best hidden chew toys 😂
@@darkeningfyre I ended up using Pee Pads under Cedar Wood Chips... put that all in two different Boot Trays (Plastic). The customized a Flip Lid/Grill by chopping up cheap Metal Muffin Trays lol zip tied it on one end so I could Flip it open and clean it. It's hard to explain but it worked well enough lol no puppies were hurt during this Potty Training Experiment so that's a win lol 🤟
Can you make an updated video? If things have changed since 2022? I notice a lot of ppl have the litter pan with slats over too we tried that but it’s super messy!!
Great question! Here at our kennel nothing has changed with this. The litter pan still works just fine and it helps out big time with the daily mess. Most particularly with pups between 3 and 8 weeks of age.
No worries. It’s just pine sawdust. They may crunch a few just to check them out but it doesn’t register as food with them so they won’t take in enough to be a problem. It’s wood so the fiber content is high anyway. If it has any effect at all it would probably be more the other way. Great question!
@@must_love_labs thank you, im just trying to put my mind at ease right now. they havent pooped in a couple days but i also gave them Nemex 2 dewormer. so im wondering if that is affecting it or if there is any internal blockages
If they are eating well but not pooping that can be a problem. I would make sure they are also drinking water (hydrated). If this doesn’t resolve naturally in a couple of days I would talk to my Vet about it.
Any suggestions for those that like to squat with rear hanging over the side? 5 month lab, does well getting there, just tends to do both businesses over the side. Attempted a larger box with same results. Shes also stubborn about using outdoors. Id much rather break her of the box, but she has come in from 10-15 mins outside with me and went to the box.
This is awesome. How do you transition the pup once they come home at 8 weeks. I plan on making a porch potter for my boxer pup, and planned on using sod, I wonder would the pine pellets work for the porch as well.
So we are about to have our 2nd litter and I was/am planning to do pellet training again but then I saw someone using the Little Wolves Puppy Potty Tray. Have you heard of them? Have you used them? thoughts? I love how quickly the puppies took to the pellets, but they are a bit messy, have to be clean and replaced often and the bags are heavy (but cheap which is nice). The potty tray looks way easier, but do you think it would be as effective?

We start them on mush at 3 to 4 weeks. Basically the first time we see momma dog try to give them dry food. We give momma hard boiled eggs at this time and when she takes one to her pups instead of eating it, we know it’s time. I train my pups to the doggie door by 4 weeks old. Nothing worse than scraping puppy poo.

Just working out a system before my labrador puppies need toilet training. Can you use pine shavings or are pine pellets a better idea
