    Hi! Betsy is so cute. My Havanese is litter trained with paper pellets as the litter. Unfortunately he likes to eat the litter. He is about a year and a half old and doesn’t have any accidents in the house. He is getting to be better about not eating the litter. We use the dog waste bags and a diaper genie to dispose of the waste. He also goes outside. The breeder started the litter box training and I continued it because I hoped to be able to travel with him. Unfortunately he doesn’t get out as much as I would like right now because of the weather and I am undergoing cancer treatment but soon I am hoping to be able to get outside more with him. Havanese are such sweet little dogs. I love watching your videos.

      Hi! Thank you! It's great your dog is litter trained. Makes it so much easier I think. We take Betsy with us when we travel and just bring a smaller litter box with. We call it her travel box. It works perfectly for wherever we stay and we don't have to lug the big one around.
      I'm so sorry about your cancer and I hope the treatments are quick and effective for you.
      I'm so glad you enjoy watching Betsy's videos! I love hearing this from viewers and I intend to keep making them throughout her life.🥰

    Hello, Thank-you for sharing your video. We just brought home our new puppy 4 days ago. She is 9 weeks old. We are wanting to litter train her as well however whenever I place litter in her tray she wants to eat it. We are using pine litter. Of course I remove it from her mouth right away but I don't know how to keep her from doing it 😢 I saw where you recommended to keep an eye on her because of that but do you have any other suggestions? Right now I am just training her to use the pee pads but would rather use the litter. Thank-you

    • @betsythehavanese
      @betsythehavanese  3 месяца назад

      Hello and thank you for your compliment. 🥰
      Did you put paper on top as I recommended? I would keep putting paper on top of just maybe an inch of litter until she gets used to using the box without eating any litter. Keep gradually adding more litter as time goes on so she gets the feel of it under her feet. She should get better about eating things she's not supposed to but until then I would keep the paper on and watch her.
      As far as pee pads to me it's more confusing. I only gave one option and that was the litter box so she was never confused as to where I wanted her to go.
      Wishing you luck!🤞
      We did not get Betsy until she was 10 1/2 weeks old. Your dog is very young so time and patience is the key.

    Hi. Thank you for sharing:) What is the paper made off? Im from Denmark and don't know what packing paper is.. Is it the kind you use in the oven and for lunchpacks?

      @betsythehavanese  9 месяцев назад

      Hi, thank you for watching. It's Duck brand packing paper. 24×24 inch. Newsprint made with 40% recycled content it says. It's paper made for packing things like for moving or storing. Also can be used for protecting surfaces from scuffs and scratches like counter tops and such. It's pretty thick and smooth. Not sticky or anything.

  • @nicolew.1987

    I have litter trained a dog before a long time ago. It was so easy, but my current puppy has been so difficult. The breeder let him go wherever, even in his crate. He poops in the litter box, but he still pees on the floor. It's so frustrating, & I don't know what to do. We clean the mess with special enzyme cleaner, but he still pees on the floor everyday. I don't knkw what to do.

    • @betsythehavanese
      @betsythehavanese  9 месяцев назад +1

      Well, we certainly know every dog is different. Don't give up. Lots of praise and a treat so they have incentive. I know my dog does not want to go in the litter if there is poop or any signs of it in there and that is why we take it out immediately with surrounding litter.
      Do you have a second litter box they can use? That helps also.
      Dogs do like going on paper so try putting that on top of the litter for a while and see if that helps. Other than that, consistency and being there to catch them and place them in the litter helps. But you probably know a lot of this already since you've trained a previous dog. Wishing you luck!🤞

    Thank you so much for this video. I am planning to litter box train my new puppy. I just would like to know since I’ll be keeping him in the playpen during the day when I’m not playing with him do I keep the litter box in the play pen? How would I keep him on a schedule to go potty if the box is always there with him or do I put it outside the playpen and take him to it at scheduled times? Thank you so much for your help.

    • @betsythehavanese
      @betsythehavanese  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi there and thanks for your interest in my video.
      I kept the litter box in the playpen because my main objective at the beginning was just to get her to use the box since it's not a natural thing for dogs. As a small puppy Betsy ate 4 times a day and there just wasn't a schedule for her potties. As long as she made it into the box we were happy. She slept all night from the first day we got her in a raised crate beside our bed ( so she could always see us) and did not have a litter box in there. We just limit her intakes a while before she went to bed and she was good all night every night. Now at 4 years old she eats twice a day, breakfast and dinner. She poops every morning and every night right before bed. Her litter boxes are always available so she can use them to pee whenever she wants. Some days if it's warm and she plays hard she drinks more water and pees more. Other days she lounges more and doesn't drink or pee that often. We don't make any schedules for that.
      As I said in the video, this is the first dog I've litter trained and every dog is different. So if you want to try and put your pup on a potty schedule then just be consistent. That is really key to any training. I wish you success however you decide to do it. Let me know if it works for you so that other followers can see and learn along with us.😊

      @@betsythehavanese thank you so much! I pick up my puppy tomorrow and I am so excited. I’m going to try it as you said. I’ll leave the box in the pen because the breeder has told me to let him free feed for two weeks before I try to put him on a schedule. I think that’s probably my best plan for him right now. Hopefully it works for him. 🤞🏽🤞🏽

    Hi, I would like to know if the poo really smells up the room if you don't manage to get it right away. Does it harden the longer it sits? Also, when you go out and leave the dog on its own, do you put her in a crate? If you let the dog roam free in the house, is there any concern with the poo sitting there for a few hours? I know that your dog uses one litter for pee and one for poo, but will a litter trained dog make a pee in the litter box if there is poo in it? Does the dog ever step in its poo by accident if there is old poo sitting there and they have to use the litter again? Does anything deter them from using it?

      @@karinswartz3046 Hi, our dog eats twice a day and poops every morning and every night right before bed. We are always home at those times so poop is always picked up immediately. She has the run of the house but is rarely left alone but for maybe an hour. We take her with us everywhere we can.
      The best thing you can do is feed your dog the same time every day and have a poop schedule. It really makes it a lot easier.

    Hello I have a rescue puppy that I've been trying to box train for about a month now and I've been using pine pellets as they told me to use at the pet store. At first he was peeing in the box and then he stopped and started to use the pee pad by the back door. Now he won't use the box at all. He's very stubborn it seems. He's now 4 months old. Any suggestions? He does really well on the pad except when the pad has been peed on more then three times then he'll pee on the floor next to the pad.

    • @betsythehavanese
      @betsythehavanese  7 месяцев назад +2

      Hi there, I've only trained one dog to do this so I'm not an expert by any means. That being said, if it were my dog I would not give him an option other than the litter box. I think that is confusing. So instead of the pee pad by the door I would put another litter box there. Also I wouldn't let him run free in the house when I'm not around at this age. Just a gated play area with a litter box in it. If you take him out of that area to be with you make sure there is always a litter box nearby. Also make sure you are always there to praise and treat him when he uses the box. It's definitely a long process and one you have to be dedicated to. You really have to be more stubborn than your dog in getting it done.😂
      Wishing you success!

    Does this work with male dogs? 🤔

    • @betsythehavanese
      @betsythehavanese  2 месяца назад

      @@morgenmorgen4625 Hi, I cannot speak from experience since my dog is female but I think if trained early on it could work. They do have litter boxes with high sides. I actually tried it with Betsy for a short time because I thought she would like the privacy but she did not like it. The high sides would be good for a male dog though if they lift their leg.
