How to quote someone's speech including yourself
"I/You/(S)he/They/We said that..." : ~다고/라고 했어(요).
ADJ~다고 (말)하다 to say that...
- 예쁘다: 예쁘다고 (말)하다 to say sth/sb is pretty
- 좋다: 좋다고 (말)하다 to say sth/sb is good(likable)
- 맵다: 맵다고 (말)하다 to say sth is spicy
- 멀다: 멀다고 (말)하다 to say sth/sb is far away
Verb~(느)ㄴ다고 (말)하다
C는다고 / Vㄴ다고
- 먹다: 먹는다고 (말)하다 to say sb eats
- 하다: 한다고 (말)하다 to say sb does
- N이다: C이라고/V라고 (말)하다 to say sth/sb is...
- 아니다: 아니라고 (말)하다 to say sth/sb is not...
👩🏫 You can omit (말)하다 and just end with ~다고/라고.
"[someone] said..."
"Did you say...?"
👩🏫 If you add ~(으)니까 reasoning, it becomes ~다니까/라니까:

There is that famous scene from Potato Star 2013QR3 with also Seo Ye ji and Go Kyung pyo when they fight as siblings, but I’m not sure if there’s enough content, it’s funny though ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Thanks a lot! I really thought 다고 + 하다 is always needed. I never thought 다고/라고 alone can be used too! I always see this alone "다고" like in Twice's song, "네가 맘에 든다고 하루 종일 보고 싶다고..." and I wonder where is (말)해 after 다고? Why didn't they include that? Now, I fully understand! Thank you!!!!!
But I still have a question. I get confused between 해서 and 했어 because in speech, they sound similar. The only way to determine 해서 is to use it as 해 가지고. How do you know if 해서 is used or 했어 during speech? Thanks!

About 해서 vs 했어, I know it's hard for non-native speakers to distinguish. Here are some clues:
- 해서 should be within one sentence: there would be the result coming after this. If it's used as a sentence ender, it must be an answer to "why" questions.
- 했어 is sentence ending. A full sentences ends here without a following clause. Also it is only for the past events.
Thus, the meaning and the context of the sentence must tell you which one is used based on their differences in meaning.
For the pronunciation difference, maybe check out 1:05:35 in today's live about consonants and see if that helps.

Hello Korean Jream. I have a question relating to a sentence that uses the grammar you present in this video.
엄마가 앉으라고 하면 서고, 서러고 하면 앉았어요.
I read this in a Korean story, and was just curious as to why the 러고 form is used instead of the 다고 form? Is this because the verbs in this sentence are being used in their noun form in that the 다 is removed and their are no verb conjugations except for with the last verb at the end of the sentence (sat)? Or is this a different grammar pattern again since the 라고 used is 으라고 and not 이라고?
Hopefully this isn't a stupid question. I've only been learning about 6 months so have much to learn. Thank you.
That ~으라고 is quoting commands, here's the lesson about it:

On the other hand, if you see N(이)라고 하다, it's quoting the statement: someone said that ...is/are N.
Pay attention when you are quoting others' commands, it's V.S~으라고

Grammatically yes that’s correct, but it could sound too direct as in “Did you say...?” in surprise or confrontation like you saw in the clips. 😅 To clarify, just simply ask “[what teacher said] 맞아요?”, checking what you heard is correct(맞아요). ☺️

So 다고 is for verbs, and 라고 is for 'is/is not'? Because I was always confused why they use it differently. What if I want to quote someone saying she said this is a cat, do I use 다고 or 라고? Confusing lol..
Yup, that would be easy to remember! Adj/verb~다고, Noun+(이)라고/아니라고 :) If the original speech was "고양이예요." which ends with 이다(to be), then you will say "고양이라고 (했어요)." Last week's live class will help you better with this too if you haven't had a chance to see it yet. 😃

선생님 안녕하세요~ Does this grammar form have a negative nuance to it? In the drama they are saying this out of frustration and anger but can i also say something casually like: oh yeah she said she’s sleeping. “어 누나가 잤다고 했어요.”

Awesome question! When you use the full sentence ending with (말)했어요, it’s just neutral report. If you omit that ending and just end with ~다고/라고, it’s mostly “I said” or “Did you say...?” with the rising intonation. When we say “I said...” usually we are frustrated or emphasizing what we already said, right? That’s why it’s often used in that nuance. 😆 When asking, we are either surprised or unsure what we heard was correct, so that’s how it’s mostly used. Does this help?

~다고 as a sentence ender without (말)하다 is more often used to mean "I said!!!" or "Did you say?"
If you are quoting a 3rd person's speech without (말)하다, it sounds more like "s/he said...." with the "..." : It still conveys some sort of attitude or feeling of the person who is quoting.
A: 고문영이 문강태를 사랑한다고... (So, Ko Moonyoung said she loves Moon Gangatae........)
B: 뭐라고? (What did you say?) 사랑한다고? (Did you/she say she loves him?)
@@nchls5730 Yes, that ~대 is also hearsay to mean "I heard" or "I was told". It's from ~다고 해, changed to ~다(고) 해, which became ~대.

So the conjugation rule is the same as ~다고/라고. I will also make a video about ~대 since it was one of the questions I got. 😃

You mean ~다고 and ~(이)라고? Their meaning is the same: quoting.
~다고 comes after adjectives and verbs.
~(이)라고 comes after nouns to say "someone said s/he is, they are, it is, etc."
