Donald Peers - "The Man On The Flying Trapeze" - original 78

  • AKA "The Daring Young Man On The Flying Trapeze". But that title was too long for this record, given the small size of the label - it's an Eclipse 8-inch. In fact, it is split into two parts, just to get the whole thing IN (it was originally written for Music Hall, not for recording).
    The backing is not listed, but sounds like Harry Bidgood to me. I love the room they give him at the start of part two - stay with it and you'll see what I mean!
    Donald Peers was in his early twenties when he recorded this - then he had a low-key career that maintained him right through to the 1970s - when out of nowhere, he suddenly had another hit - "Give Me One More Chance" went UK Top 40.
    Then a year later, he pegged out, at 65. RIP.

    My father (b.1908) knew this song - or the chorus, at least. So good to hear it in full. A cautionary tale!
