    I was at this magical show. Great version of the song. Seems like Bruce is checking the monitor when looking down for the lyrics. The Seeger Session shows were some of the best concerts I have ever seen.

    I'm a sideshow/circus performer, Juggling, fire eating, escapes and sword swallowing. My wife used to be my assistant. When we worked together we were friends and 100% professional. 3 years later (after she moved out of state) we reconnected and I told her that I could not in good conscience pretend to be "just friends" with her because I had fallen in love with her long ago.
    She told me she was going through a divorce due to mistreatment and that she too had feelings for me and always has. She loved me for my talent and personality.
    This is our song, and makes us both tear up.
    I don't know why I just typed all this.
    I guess I just wanted to put it out there, so people see that saying how you truly feel can pay off.
    Sometimes you're the protagonist in this song but sometimes you're the daring young man on the flying trapeze. The choice is truly up to you. Who will you choose to be?
    God Bless!

      My Dear Mr. Zippo: I am reading your very heartfelt story today, MARCH 20, 2020. I watched the movie about the Influenza of 1918-thinking of how my Aunt would have been only eighteen at that time; and what she must have gone through- I'm a songwriter , but haven't' been able to get back to work "happily", as I've become so depressed with this..what is it now called, corona virus, Covid19-whatever! -we're tired of the names and all of the misinformation given to us; I AM CALLING THIS VIRUS, THE "TRAPEZE" virus; as it "seems also, to be "Flying through the air with the greatest of ease!"; Being a retired school teacher, and seeing all of the FEARS and ANXIETIES of the teens commenting on thier social media machines, I thought... WHAT CAN WE DO,FOR THE CHILDREN NOW ?
      I'd like you to take a look at what I've tried to do here, and note, please, with my friend and co-worker, Fred., we're not able ot put a RECORDING on you tube just yet; As we'd hoped to merely be helpful.
      I don't' want WRONG ADVISE given to all of these kids who are being told that WASHING HANDS is a major concern; Seems society has heard of GLOVES by now and it's seeming ridiculous to keep washing ones hands , just to touch a dirty door knob? But this son g is so MEMORABLE to SO MANY and such a distinctively memorable CHORUS..it ought to be presented TO OUR CHILDREN. tHE LITTLE ONES who aren't big enough to get up ONTO a computer yet, but are hearing all of the NASTY WORDS out there that SCARE THEM about this virus. I would love to hear YOUR opinion about a song that I really feel should be REVISED, even if it is a hundred years later? I've never stolen a melody in my life, but this one really intrigues me. (Coincidentally, it appears the writers OF this melody, somehow incorporated a few melodic phrases from "Mocking Bird Hill"...not a nice thing to do, without permission, right ?)
      pls see below, my new POST/COMMENT to those parents of these types of children,And Pls write to me at LyndaFayeSMusic@gmail.
      Thank you so much .
      Lynda Faye
      LET'S ALSO try to EMPOWER THE LITTLE ONES WHO HEAR SCARY WORDS AROUND THE HOUSE AND ARE AFRAID !
      The Virus Trapeze!
      It flies through the air with the greatest of ease,
      Like a Devil escaping, on a flying Trapeze !
      It's big and it's bad , but it does not scare ME,
      God is now watching that cough and that sneeze!
      ( I put that line in for all the Plague theorists !)Clean up that back yard if you're lucky enough to have one...and thought I haven't felt like writing a song in over four months---this melody I'm sure will come to you easily; and SING IT WITH THOSE LITTLE ONES who are too small to get up on your computer yet!Lyrics Copyrighted by IllinoisHarmonyConnection@ You Tube, SoundClick & SoundCloud. Melody stolen (temporarily!) from lyricist and singer, George Leybourne, with music by Gaston Lyle, sung 4 years AFTER THE DEADLY INFLUENZA OF 1918!

      @@lyndafaye5878 Luckily for everyone this isn't as bad as the Spanish flu which claimed 500 million souls worldwide.
      I do agree that the misinformation needs to stop though. Unfortunately we live in a capitalist society run by business interests and our politicians have been bought and paid for long ago.
      So we the people will be forced to go back out in totally unsafe conditions to earn their blood money for them even though there has been Zero decline in death's and infections.
      The real culprit in the spread of covid19 is the selfishness of others and non preparedness on the part of the citizenry. Top experts have been warning of pandemics for a decade now due to overpopulation and lack of education, but few listened.
      Now they're worried about their hair and nails more than the lives of their fellow man. It's disgusting and shameful!

      yeah, it's a fantastic performance, but the F word was totally un-necessary, it added nothing to the performance, in fact it's glaring and detracts.

    • @bknoll100
      @bknoll100 8 лет назад +8

      +Dan D. Dirges - I don't know, I think the F-word is really appropriate here. The story is how a young guy feels after the one he loves leaves him for someone else. If your wife/gf/partner left you for someone else, I'm sure the f-word would cross your mind at least once. Overall, I think it adds to his frustration and emotion.

    Once I was happy, but now I'm forlorn
    Like an old coat that is tattered and torn;
    Left on this world to fret and to mourn,
    Betrayed by a maid in her teens.
    The girl that I loved she was handsome;
    I tried all I knew her to please
    But I could not please her one quarter so well
    As the man upon the trapeze.
    He'd fly through the air with the greatest of ease,
    That daring young man on the flying trapeze.
    His movements were graceful, all girls he could please
    And my love he purloined away.
    This young man by name was signor bona slang,
    Tall, big and handsome, as well made as chang.
    Where'er he appeared the hall loudly rang
    With ovation from all people there.
    He'd smile from the bar on the people below
    And one night he smiled on my love.
    She wink'd back at him and she shouted "bravo,"
    As he hung by his nose up above.
    Her father and mother were both on my side
    And very hard tried to make her my bride;
    Her father he sighed, and her mother she cried,
    To see her throw herself away.
    'Twas all no avail, she went there every night,
    And would throw him bouquets on the stage,
    Which caused him to meet her; how he ran me down,
    To tell you would take a whole page.
    One night I as usual went to her dear home,
    Found there her father and mother alone.
    I asked for my love, and soon they made known,
    To my horror that she'd run away.
    She'd packed up her box and eloped in the night
    With him, with the greatest of ease;
    From two stories high he had lowered her down
    To the ground on his flying trapeze.
    Some months after this I went to the hall;
    Was greatly surprised to see on the wall
    A bill in red letters, which did my heart gall,
    That she was appearing with him.
    He'd taught her gymnastics and dressed her in tights,
    To help him live at his ease,
    And made her assume a masculine name,
    And now she goes on the trapeze.
    She'd fly through the air with the greatest of ease,
    You'd think her the man young man on the flying trapeze.
    Her movements were graceful, all girls she could please,
    And that was the end of my love.

    @FrankeeFraud many old folk songs and ballads are like that. for example, all my life i loved the song Clementine though i never paid the lyrics much mind. then i listened to them and what do ya know? its about Clementine's dad or lover (depending on the point of view) not being able to save poor Clementine from drowning. but i think theres something enchanting about a sad song sung in a somewhat happy tone u know? it gives it an extra spark in my opinion.

    • @jacobthelioneater
      @jacobthelioneater 10 лет назад +4

      I think it was a joke about that - a few things that give me that impression are the way he seems to add in 'barely out of' quickly (to create a surprise for those not expecting it) and the way he smiles as he says it. A few audience members laughed about it as well.
      I should also note that there are so many versions of this song out there (with different endings!) that it is more the music and general concept that have become standard, as opposed to any specific set of lyrics.

    Only Bruce could ruin a song this good. Popeye sang in better in the cartoon. He also left out about half of the lyriics. I guess Bruce couldn't remember it all. And with a full orchestra and dozens of singers he still ruins it. The only worse cover he did was "Summer Time Blues" where he emphasizes "THE" cause he can't make the song.
    If Bruce ever gets over himself he'll be collecting cans at his next gig, telling us to vote for Obama again, and lousing up some other cover songs.
