I just looked up the 2000 NL MVP voting and it is jaw-droppingly insane. By both contemporary and present day standards, Todd Helton was absolutely robbed.
True. Kent had no business winning the award that year. Bonds, Jones, Johnson, and Helton all had him beat. It's not the most egregious robbery I've ever seen (Ted Williams' 1941 season holds that distinction), but it's just more evidence that journalists have no business handing out awards.
At the end of May, Helton's batting average was .421, and it stayed over .400 until June 11th. It went all the way down to .370 on August 2nd, when Helton suddenly went nuts again. Over the next 16 games, he went 34-for-58 -- a .586 average -- to get all the way up to .399. The pace, of course, was unsustainable, and he dropped below .390 on September 4th, then below .380 nine days later. Helton nevertheless became only the second player to hit over .390 that late in a season (other than George Brett*, and maybe Tony Gwynn in an alternate universe) since Ted Williams' 1941 campaign. *All the more impressive when you consider that Brett played a total of 117 games in 1980, whereas September 3rd, 2000 was Helton's 136th game of the year.
Helton is seriously overlooked....what a great pure hitter, he really had the "hit tool"....he should definitely be a Hall of Famer, .316 lifetime batting average
Well, he finally made it. I think it's cool that he ended up being in the same hall of fame class as Joe Mauer, given that they were both one-team guys.
Don't know if I had ever seen him without the beard! Also, clicked on the video with 17K views, very fitting. Really interesting stuff, I had no idea about this!
defending a short guy cheater that doesn't know you, why? Is that you Jose? Remember Lance Armstrong had teammates come out and defend him for years too. It means nothing.@@旭球
Helton had 42 HR's and 2nd Best for the Rockies that year had...20. The Rockies had 161 HR's that year...good for 13th out of 16 NL teams. So don't just say "Coors Field" and act like that's an explanation for his stats. Dude slashed a .353/15/59 total away from Coors; those are still monster totals in 2000.
@@dudemanofdude They did go to same school but Helton only started over Peyton briefly and just because he was the incumbent starter. Soon as Peyton got in there, that was it. Todd only played one year with Peyton. Still cool, though!
Not even a Rockies fan but that marker of not a hofer cause coors field needs to stop. It causes hof players to not want to be there because it puts a * on their career
Now, he's gone from a .500 Avg to a .050 BAC. I like Todd, all of us from Colorado do. I just think we all knew he had a problem when someone hi fived him and said alright, and Todd thought they said Bud Light. He's a good guy, but you would think $100 million in career earnings would get him to afford a designated driver. Later in his career he really should have been trying to be a designated hitter to prolong his career. Now, he needs a designated driver to prolong his life. The cop who arrested him didn't actually give him a sobriety test. He simply looked at Todd's driver's license and said, "This guy has been with the Rockies since 1995, he's obviously going to be an alcoholic."
It sounds great to say the "best month in MLB history", but it's essentially an incredible hot streak which happened to have started on the 1st of a month in which Helton only played 23 games... so, is it also the best 23 game stretch in MLB history? And if the number of games played in that month isn't factored in, maybe there's a player who went 3 for 4 on the 1st of the month, got injured, then returned on the final day of the month and went 3 for 4 again... do we give them credit for hitting .750 that month? Or what if a call up makes their debut on the last day of the month, and goes 3 for 3?
@@jbizz80 I do, just not many. But in fairness, it wasn’t even a banned substance in baseball during that period. It wasn’t even a story until the reporter asked Mark McGwire about the Androstenedione supplement he saw in his locker during an interview. Then it blew up after that.
This is great but the record should have an asterisk beside it because Helton was facing plumbers and janitors for pitchers. Today’s pitchers are light years better than the ones Helton played against. Evolution and sports science and vegetables and stuff have made today’s athletes way better.
Dude, you’re talking guys in 2000. It wasn’t that long ago. He played against guys like Maddux, Johnson, Glavine, and Schilling. No one in the major leagues during the turn of the century had a second job.
I really don't want to be mean, but thus was the worst video I've ever seen on SRS. I'm sorry but I really hope she never makes any more on the channel
Helton was hitting .400 for the season in mid June and after another hot streak in August was hitting over .390 a week into Sept. I think what you meant to say is, even after taking power out of the equation, what Arraez has done this year isn't remotely comparable to what Helton did in 2000.
not impressive, played at coors field, all of his stats are over inflated. Remove 90 pts off his career batting avg and 300 off of his career ops. Most overrated player in mlb history. Without coors he is nothing more than a poor mans mark grace
I look forward to his inevitable Hall of Fame induction. Underrated player
Same. He was one of my favorites to watch growing up
So underrated. Top 5 of 2000s
he was a product of coors field, his stats are phoney
Truly was inevitable.
he made it!
“His average quickly dipped to .481” famous words that will never be uttered again

First half 2023 Luis Arraez but with power is the scariest thought
Never knew he had a month like this that’s insane. A definite hall of famer

Deserving of the Hall of Fame for sure
Should have been first ballet Hof induction. His defense was phenomenal.
Man, I loved watching him hit. You see a lot of his power in this video, but the way he could just flick a hit into left field was amazing.
One of the most underrated players in history, Helton was a solid baseball player one of my favorites growing up.

This channel friggin rocks! I love what you all do. Thank you.
Who’s here after Todd Helton got elected to the National Baseball Hall Of Fame?
And he never got mentioned in the Mitchell Report. So he was likely playing clean and doing all this. Bananas.
Helton was a great contact guy; yes, he did hit 40+ hrs a couple times, but his thing was always extra base hits and high average.
Well, he finally made it. I think it's cool that he ended up being in the same hall of fame class as Joe Mauer, given that they were both one-team guys.

Yes
Hall of Famer...Todd Helton!
Todd Helton was an HOF caliber player. He deserves to be in.
hows he not in the hall of fame makes no sense
Just shows how great those Cubbies were
Todd batted .476 in August of that same year!!!!
Hell, doing this for a WEEK is hard much less for a month
Todd just dead lowered the pitching difficulty to Rookie💀
School: Anything below 60% is a failure. No ifs ands or buts about it.
Baseball:
Conclusion: Baseball is way, way, way harder than school.
Helton needs to get in the HOF asap!

If Coors keeps him out of the Hall (it won't, he'll get in) then no pitcher who primarily pitched in a pitcher's park should get in
Just a little bit of a nit to pick. If Arraez is at .439 and Helton was at .512, the math is .073 or 73 points, not 83. Enjoyed the video.
