One of those guys that make me wish the mid-to-late 2000’s MLB was more appreciated. Zim, Joey Votto, Dontrelle Willis, Tim Lincecum, Tulo, and Anibal Sanchez are all heroes for my generation of baseball fans.
Dude is the reason his team won the wild card in 2019 that got them a ring. That WS run got me back into baseball for the first time since 2005…thanks Ryan! Here’s to retirement sir!
I was a little surprised you didn’t mention one stat about his walk-off HRs that’s always stuck out to me. He’s 8th all time with 11. Everybody in the top 20 or so has 400 home runs or more. Except Zim, who doesn’t even have 300. 11/284 homers were walk-offs, about 4%. That’s insane.
I think it's important I share this. Ryan Zimmerman means a lot to me as a baseball fan. I'm 17 now but when I was young the Washington nationals played spring training in Brevard county for a few years. I got the privilege to throw out the first pitch at a few of those games. But thats not the memory that sticks with me the memory that sticks with me is Ryan Zimmerman being right there giving me his batting gloves and the usual rub the little kid on his head it was the small little moments I shared with Zimmerman when I was young. He did this without any cameras or News around he did this out of the kindness of his heart because to him it wasn't about fame or popularity. I've shared many small and just a minute at max memories with Zimmerman but those are what have stuck with me throughout the years and is why Zimmerman means so much to me as a baseball fan.
I'm so glad he won a ring. Good defense, clutch hitter, would love to see him stay on the HOF ballot for a bit. That 2017 comeback season was simply huge for him.
I was at opening day in 2008 and that cemented his legacy for me. I always liked him and idolized him. As a 21 year old kid in Miami, I was able to catch homerun 282/284 that was one of the greatest moments of my life. To Mr. National… to the man this guy has idolized his whole life…. Thank you for everything
He's always been one of my heroes. I got to go to the game where he got his 1500th hit and met him for a brief period after the game. I personally think he could actually make the Hall in Cooperstown, but knowing the BBWAA, he'll get 12 votes and a cookie from the committee...
Love this guy. What’s always surprising to me is him having a disproportionate amount of his HRs being walkoffs (3.9%), that might still be the record. The other guys with more nominal walkoff HRs all had an advantage due to hitting more total HRs anyway, Zim only had 284. And I was at one of them (7/31/2010 vs. PHI), it’s still a major memory for me. Great video
Zimmerman, Tulowitzki, Longoria, Posey, and Joe Mayer are all guys who made our childhoods special. Sad to see these guys all retired but happy to see the next generation come in.
I suggest a beltre video he wasn’t the best player or the face of a franchise for his whole career but as a rangers fan he is 100% the most beloved player in baseball at least from 2011 to his last season
Ryan Zimmerman is my favorite player in MLB history. When Harrisburg came to my town Zim was playing with them on a minor league rehab assignment so I went to the game. I sat right next to the visitors dugout to get a good look as the players were on deck. At the same time prospect Luis Garcia was making his ascent to the big club via Harrisburg. As Ryan climbed out of the dugout Luis was at bat. I took out my phone and began shooting video of Zim up close warming up on deck. However, Garcia was in the background for his at bat. Ryan turned around and saw me recording. I don't know if he assumed I was a scout or something but he immediately assumed I was there to record Luis, not him. He pivots behind and took several steps to the left back towards the dugout to finish his warmup outside of my shot. That is what a humble, unassuming and non-pretentious individual Ryan Zimmerman is. I never forgot that.
He is the greatest Virginian ever! If you go to the Nats park souvenir shop, even though it's been 2 years since he last played, close to half of the merchandises are dedicated towards him, and that's too little if you ask me. Can't wait until his statue is built for the park :) Definitely my favorite player from my team.
Love your videos! I like to watch them sometime multiple times because they are so good. Maybe do one on Paul Konerko! Felt like he shouldn’t have died off the HOF ballet like he.
Yo man Paul Konerko!! Love all these throwbacks to our childhood heroes who might get less recognition, as a South Sider I'd love to hear about a guy we considered our captain for 10 years
Please tell the story of how Yusmeiro Petit was the unsung hero of the SF Giants 2014 world championship. Threw 6 shutout innings in extra innings during the 18 inning of the 2014 NLDS against Washington. He also broke the record for most perfect innings thrown in a row, along with missing a perfect game in 2013 by inches, which may have been prevented if Hunter Pence didn’t take a few steps to his right before the pitch, something he mentioned in “Games with Names” podcast. I love the content, keep it up!
I was lucky enough to see the Nationals first home game against the Reds back in 05. It definitely was weird watching another team play MLB in the DC/Bmo area not named the Orioles.
you guys need to look at Alex Gordon. Dude was a stud coming up as a third baseman, had high expectations. Then he couldn't hit, and got sent down. Became one of the league's best left fielder, and kept his career. Super underrated, and such a valuable piece to the Royals World Series run.
Its interesting how similar his career was to David Wright. Whats crazy is that they played on the same little league team (with Mark Reynolds and the Uptons too).
I'm a Cubs fan and we don't win the WS in 2016 without Miguel Montero's clutch RBI single. Zobrist gets all the praise (and rightly so) but Montero gave us an extra-run cushion and it ended up being the winning run. Sadly, Montero said some things about manger Joe Madden after the WS win that earned the ire of Cubs fans but he was still instrumental for the clubhouse. It's probably too obscure but his RBI single helped break the 108 year curse. That's worth something.
As an Astros fan I loved this video. Hearing about Zimmermans walkoff hr ability, and the fact that he hit 2 in his first full year in the majors has me excited for Peña. Of course everyone saw his great play in the post season, but he also hit two walkoff bombs in the regular season. Even when he was slumping he came up in the big moments. I really think that if nothing else he’s got a great glove and the clutch gene. What more could you want?
Between this and the Stephen Strasburg video on his channel, I think Juan Soto joining his Padres has inadvertently turned SportStorm into a Nationals fan.
The 2019 Nationals who subsequently opted out. Such as Zimmerman. Had to want to really try to repeat. As much as the pandemic bore a large brunt if the decision making. Oh my. It musta been hard to disconnect from the need to repeat.
As an Astros fan, I not only tip my cap to you for beating us (and also thank you for punishing us after 2017), I feel really, really, REALLY bad for the Nationals fans. No team deserves to get what you’ve gotten since you won the World Series, and I wish you luck in the future.
This was an amazing video, I remember watching Zims last game against the red sox (I'm a sox fan) and wanting to see him go out with a homer. I think ya'll should make a video about Dustin Pedroia and if possible it should be narrated by Jordan
Just asking because I assume you have done this for this video or other videos at some point, but do you ever use clips that arent on youtube or mlb com? if so, then how?
14 years later too! Plus add in the first HR ever at Nats Park Opening Night... being a walk-off too. Incredible career. It's hard to watch the Nats without him.
Alex Gordon greatest defender. He played his entire career with the Royals. Even though the team sucked he stayed and helped the team win the world series
Zim's career was a damn shame. Don't get me wrong, I loved him every minute he played for the Nats, but there's no question that injuries sapped what was once a HoF-trajectory career. The first half of it was spent on a laughingstock, cellar-dwelling team where he got little to no attention despite being consistently among the very best players in the league. He honestly should have been at least a five-time All Star and multiple Gold Glover by the midpoint of his career. He was great, routinely ranked among the top 3Bs in the game (during an era rich with great 3Bs) both offensively and defensively. He was an absolute stud. Then in the second half, when the Nats were among the best teams in the league year in and year out, most years he barely contributed. Watching his defense devolve to the point where they had to move him off 3B was one of the saddest moments in my life as a baseball fan. It was absolutely heartbreaking to anyone who followed him every day for his whole career. He was great, but his career didn't live up to his talent, through no fault of his own. The guy gave everything, and like everyone else he was the guy I was most happy for in 2019. I feel like him winning that, and being a genuine contributor along the way even if the days of him being the unquestioned best player on the team were long gone, really helped cement his legacy, not just in DC, but in the story of MLB of the last two decades.
I know he's not the best player or well known player unless you're a true FL Marlins fan but I'd really enjoy a video on MR. Marlins himself Jeff conine!
Another video idea, Michael Young, super unrated, 2k hits, helped the Rangers to 2 world series appearances. Definitely not a hall of famer, but doesn't get enough credit as a 200 hit per season guy
WE NEED KYLE HENDRICKS He is still in the league todya, and currently isn't the best, but he was so good from 2015-2018. As a Cubs fan, I hope you do Kyle Hendricks. Actually as a baseball fan, too.
Ryan Zimmerman is not the best player that has ever played for the Nationals, but there will NEVER be a more impactful player in the history of the team. He's not going to the Hall of Fame, but he is an icon in Washington D.C., and I don't see that changing.

His pinch hit broken bat single in the WC game down 2 and with 2 outs is probably the clutchest thing I’ve ever seen in baseball.
This man is the reason me, and so many other Nationals fans fell in love with the game. His number retirement ceremony made me cry so much
I think a video on Evan Longoria with the Rays would be an excellent video. He left an impact that is still being felt today.
@@penguincross7897 what he said
