Unions aren't just wage machines, they're power brokers. They're the David to the corporate Goliath, the underdog in the fight for fair pay and decent working conditions. And let's be clear, they're not just fighting for their members. They're raising the bar for everyone. When unions push for higher wages, it's not just union workers who benefit. It's a ripple effect, and we all get to ride the wave. You’re welcome for the weekend. Galloway's got this idea that the market always wins, that it's some kind of unstoppable force that'll steamroll right over unions. But here's the thing: markets aren't natural phenomena, they're human constructs. And like anything we build, they're flawed. They're skewed in favor of those with power, and they're not always fair. That's where unions come in. They're the counterbalance, the check on corporate power. So let's not reduce unions to a line item on a paycheck. They're so much more than that. They're the champions of the worker, the defenders of fair pay, and the guardians of our rights. And if that's not worth a few union dues, I don't know what is.
Thanks. So tired of the worship of people like Elon, no wonder he is anti union, like all billionaires. Funny that he managed to fool people that he cares about free speech when he folded like a cheap suit when Turkey demanded it, then promoted a president candidate the day before that candidate gave him the new laws SpaceX wanted in Florida. .
You are 100% correct. Scott seems to be wanting a Utopia were the US government is so perfect that it can function as a dedicated union to all fields. It just isn't realistic. Yes, the government can come up with a minimum wage or minimums for when overtime would apply (for which every company will figure a way to weasel out of). Unions are far from perfect but in many/most trades, the worker is or would be better off being part of a union, particularly if they participate in said union. Before Scott tries to sell me on the government as THE union, try to come up with a wage scale that tracks inflation and cost of living in a particular geographical area without the need for new legislation. They can't even get the minimum wage right.
37:34 This “Private Equity” portion of the show is gold. Everyone should hear this. I’ve been saying this to people around me and those who ask for advice for years. Thank you for sharing the wisdom.
Yes, completely agree. Even more specifically, from about 50:44 to the end of the Private Equity segment, Scott's insights into paying fees and how that relates to how much a person should be willing to pay for "expertise" was so valuable. His advice on how to invest seems to fall under a few 1st principles concepts and not falling for marketing.
I got chills during the HBO segment. Well said. Are you teaching a summer short course on brands again? Re: Nvidia; supporting Games, crypto, content creation (see Mandalorian, real-time 3d rendering for TV and Movies), that's all worth billions of dollars, but understanding Consciousness, that's worth trillions and more. Right now GPU's are like man-made-neurons, and they're hungry for electricity. Until we get quantum computing, it's CPU's and GPU's.
Can you please do an in-depth explanation about Wall Street expected earnings? For example, are expected earnings made up from a collected average of different predictions, or is it just one entity that formulates predictions? Also, how often is wall street correct in these predictions? and is the number even a good indicator of business performance and health?
100% agree on HBO. Such a braindead move from Zaslav. HBO's superior branding goes back to the 80s. It's part of Zaslav's strategy to start pushing garbage"reality" TV shows. Such a sad and undeserved death for HBO.
While I find myself agreeing with many of Scott's takes, his stance on unionization is factually incorrect. At least in the US, studies consistently find that union workers significantly outearn their nonunion peers in the same line of work. As of last year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has found that the average nonunion worker earns 85% of what the average union member earns. ($1,029 vs $1,216 per week). That adds up to over $10,000 per year simply on paychecks. Unions also have pension funds, retirement options, healthcare options, etc. As a shareholder, I tend to find myself investing in unionized companies versus nonunion, since they just tend to perform better. Don't belive me? Look at UPS stock versus FedEx. Not even close. UPS workers are union, Fedex is not. The UPS workers earn more, are happier, and are more productive than the FedEx workers. Another example is Kroger versus Target. Kroger is the company everyone keeps saying is going to fail, but it just keeps growing. Fully unionized stores. Target has no unions. Of course, there are companies that go against this rule, but there are exceptions to every rule. Overall, unionization tends to have a more positive effect in my opinion because unions at a minimum can protect a company from a CEO who wishes to engage in reckless destruction of shareholder value. If Facebook was unionized, I doubt we would see the complete obliteration of Meta's market cap since Mark Zuckerburg would have been forced by collective bargaining agreements to meet certain standards pertaining to corporate governance. He would not have had a board of yes men directors since the union would have had seats on the board voicing the objections of employees getting their stock options crushed into oblivion. Zuckerburg has nobody at Facebook to tell him that he is wrong. Same thing with Elon Musk. If Tesla had a union, you can bet the Twitter aquisition would have been very unlikely, since the union would again be hammering Musk to shut up as his employees get their stock options destroyed. Musk's tweet history shows he is the kind of person with an incredibly fragile ego. The second someone actually gives pushback to an idea of his, you see him perform a complete 180.
I didn't go as deep as Galloway but the way he put it. It really was just a passing thought but my frst reaction was; why are they calling it Max instead of HBO? I've watched several shows on HBO not one on Cinemax. HBO has always been the best of the pay per view services. Now as good as any streaming service also.
"The thing about HBO is not just the shows that were on it but also the shows that weren't on it" That's true and that is why the Max originals and the reality TV shows do not really belong under the HBO umbrella. It was diluting the HBO brand to have shows not made by HBO Studios only available on HBO Max. HBO would never make Dr. Pimple Popper but under this misguided naming arrangement, it appeared that it did. Also, there were 30 some years of brand equity built that made the case that HBO was mature or even adult entertainment. Parents were not thinking of downloading the app for their kids even though there is a ton of children's programming. That being said, "Max" is not a great name. But at least it does not have a "+" at the end.
I can't get used to Max...I am still looking for the HBO app on my phone. It will take time. True, I relied on HBO to have consistent top programming...
I think I’m about the same age as Scott and I agree with him about HBO. That said I think my 20 year old son wouldn’t because he doesn’t have the history with it. He missed all of the best HBO had to offer and now he only sees what it is today which isn’t the same company.
Hey guys, really insightful discussion on TikTok and what the law is. Can you also do similar stuff around regulations on AI, if you already did please give a link.
I used to wear multiple coats and jackets and two pants on the flight so I could bring more luggage with my on my quarterly trips back home from school. When I was moving back home, this trick became especially useful. I was never “caught” though. Nobody ever said anything. I think it’s because I would weigh out all my bags before approaching the check in counter. If you do it afterwards, then they notice and they’re on to you.
With respect to Adidas and the Yeezys--I agree with Scott that it's ok to sell them, only bc they were already produced. The more environmentally and economically responsible thing to do at this point in time is the sell them, bc burning them sucks, and donating them will drive some sort of black market antics. Plus, it seems there is a demand from consumers to actually buy them stlll. Given that Adidas can't be held responsible for the atrocious things Kanye said and has outright disavowed him, at least they can try to "make amends" by donating profits to causes affected by his hateful words. How much Adidas donates will basically determine whether they truly abhorred Kanye's actions, or if it's just purely an effort to reap everything they can from the losses to better their books.
*HEY PROF G* When are you going to comment on the PwC Scandal in Australia where they have been caught redder than red handed. Adidas destroying would not have only hurt stakeholders, I'm pretty sure burning & destroying 1.3 billion in perfectly fine products would have just caused the next PR headache: I mean how could you present yourself as a sustainable company, trying to lower emissions and play the ESG marketing game, if you did something like this. That would be fast fashion & throwaway economy at its worst and pretty hard to sell PR-wise.....
Yep, the HBO move warrants a serious review of human being’s status on the species intelligence scale. Proves we have a long way to go in our evolution.
Ed, seriously? The Max branding is insanely idiotic! I completely concur with the Prof G here - HBO holds the richness of the brands legacy and ongoing promise of consistently reflecting and leading today's conversation. Zaslav is a bone head on this one. It reminds me of when Tropicana walked away from their Orange, Pepsi launched "Clear", and Coke launched "New Coke", like all of these bad branding moves, I predict 'Max' will return to it's HBO branding.
All that said, the Max rebranding is much ado about nothing. Home Box Office (HBO) isn't exactly 21st century branding either. To the end user, nothing matters here.

An AI poem not about going back to Old Nassau with Jazz Hands
She teaches how to craft a brand
That shines with trust and value
She knows the tricks to make demand
And win the customers' review
But underneath her polished mask
She hides a dark and twisted core
She bends the truth and breaks the rules
And preys on those who are unsure
She thinks she's smart and usually right
She rarely cares for consequences
But someone knows her dirty secrets
And threatens to expose her offenses
Now she's trapped in a web of fear
She can't escape or fight or flee
She has to pay a heavy price
For her immoral strategy
The Twitter podcast shitshow imo clearly showed, that they whole narrative that Musk got rid of 80%+ of twitters workforce and everything still works normally like it always did is flat out BS. You just don't publicly see these effects right away: Once you have a running system, it doesn't require that much manpower to keep a system running at the current level. But if traffic increases, problems pop up or you try to develop new features and keep up with your competitors innovations, these cuts suddenly show up and fast. You might be able to somewhat maintain the status quo, but R&D suffers dramatically making you fall behind new innovations/developments. Legal/regulatory troubles will build up quickly when you eliminate most of your mod team and if for whatever reason traffic increases (or you introduce new features that change the traffic), your reduced workforce will become publicly visible because once bugs & incident tickets rack up, your response time to fix these and get new stuff running smoothly will take significantly more time than in the past.
