Nice stuff Paul! I first met Simon at a jazz festival we were both playing at in Whistler British Columbia in 2011. When it came time for me to go up on stage Simon said “hey Lucas, how about you plug into my amp?” Being a fairly young player at the time not having had much experience with great gear I proceeded to plug-in and encounter One of the best overdrive sounds I’ve ever experienced. For Christmas that year my extremely supportive father bought me the first version of the Kingsley minstrel, And that pedal still lives on my main board to this day.. quite honestly I never felt the need to look elsewhere. I have a couple other overdrives, but that is still my main stay. I saved up and purchased one of Simon‘s tube amps, when he was still making them in 2014, and just a couple weeks ago took possession of a modified minstrel Version three to put on my small board for stage is that aren’t quite as big and fly dates. I guess you can say I caught the Kingsley bug, but in my case it’s stopped me from going down that rabbit hole that so many players go down, buying overdrive pedal after overdrive pedal. I’ve found a sound, and certainly everything I need personally in the Kingsley stuff.
Thanks Lucas, yes it sounds like you’re a lucky boy. And you’re SO right about the rabbit hole! I’m currently trying to sell my way out of it.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 thanks for the reply Paul, and best of luck with the rabbit hole. We all find ourselves in different parts of it for sure haha.
Hello,
Thanks for the video, i’m a proud Owner of a Kingsley Bastion 40w Amp and few of Simon Jarrett’s Kingsley pedals including boost/drive/preamps, they are all incredible in terms of touch sensitive dynamic, harmonics, richness etc…
Simon is a fabulous guitar player with great ears and knowledge about Good sounds before being a technician and builder, you can feel it in all his creations.
Thanks Yannis. Yes, I’ve heard that when other technicians dismantle his pedals that they are always very impressed with all aspects of how his pedals are engineered.
Nice playing Paul. I just got the Harlot V1, and as you say its the feel, and responsiveness that inspires creativity. My new favorite drive hands down. Cheers
Thanks for the video, Paul. I currently have the Kingsley Maiden D and Page DS, which I use direct into the FX return of my Victory V40 deluxe. These two together are based on the Dumble overdrive special, clean and overdrive channels respectively. I also have Kingsley Squire 86, which is an EF86 preamp that I run into the FX return of my AC30 as an EF86 channel. Some genuinely staggering tones. As you say, once you're down this rabbit hole, it's kind of of difficult to turn back! One other high voltage valve overdrive to try is the Vahlbruch Kaluna. It's my favourite overdrive by some margin and is more readily available than the Kingsley stuff. That being said, I'm already back on the Kingsley waitlist for another round!
My goodness, it seems you are way further down the rabbit hole than me🤣. But it also seems you’re over the moon with your tones…. Oh dear, guess I better get saving. And yes, Shawn Tubbs does a fantastic review on that German one you talk about….
brilliant playing and demonstration. i’m partial to the huge and clean sound of the page. thanks!
Thanks Shayeasy, delighted you liked the vid 👍
The youtube algorithm has absolutely made my morning.
Seriously tasty playing, subbed!
Well thank you Davepotnoodle! Delighted you liked my playing 👍
Nice guitar playing
Listening to this was just a beautiful end to my day, thanks Paul.
Wow, thanks man. What a lovely comment 👍🍻
Great review and beautiful playing as always Paul. You're right, the rabbit hole is never-ending, so just enjoy the ride. In the end, it's whatever gear inspires you.
Thanks Tom, I agree. Cheers for watching 😊
Great video Paul. There are so many great pedals available now. Ive not tried them but the Victory pedals look great. I do have A Revival Drive Compact and that nails the valve 'feel' totally. I've been down the rabbit hole so long I've stopped trying to find a way out, my wife looks at my gear collection and says I'm a lost cause. Even my kids say "is it the usual for your birthday dad, pedal voucher?" 🤘🤘
I laughed out loud there 🤣. That sounds SO like what my wife and son say to me!
We all suffer with OCD of guitars amps pedals strings leads plectrums Its the child in u sand it is what it is there's no cure for it It just gets worse as we get older My next toy is going to be a univibe but don't tell the missus
Oh my lord, that Harlot! Glorious to behold. I'll be very interested to see how close the solid state pedals can ever compete with that. I don't think you've ever sounded that good. The goldtop and the Harlot were a match made in heaven to my ears. Damn!
Thanks Peter. Yes, the Harlot and the Les Paul - it made my tweed Cornell sound like a cranked Marshall 🤣🤘
I once played Jester and I just can't get it out of my mind ever since. One day I will be able to afford it and I will buy it. Heavenly tones.
Oh man, not another one? 🤣. This Kingsley rabbit hole goes on forever ….
Those Kingsleys are fantastic. Sadly out of my budget right now but i have managed to get an SIB Cuda
tube pedal for around $95 bucks used which is pretty awesome. I swapped the 12Aax7 tube for 5751 and getting some awesome tube tones - mods my dear old Blues Jr into a Marshall tone very nicely.
Interesting Tim….. sounds like you got a good deal there. Enjoy 😊
I think 5751s sound better than 12ax7 in every tube overdrive I've tried. The Valbruch Kaluna is incredible as well!
Ive got a sib cuda. Great pedal. I was thinking about trying some other tubes in it. Maybe a vintage mullard or something. Whats the sound change with the 5751 like?
Just got my Kingsley Squire pre-amp last week and I'm absolutely in love with it. Kingsley pedals truly live up to the praise. Really coveting one of the overdrives but can't really justify it since I love my gain section (Greer Lightspeed into a Catalinbread Formula 5F6). But this video certainly doesn't help. Fantastic playing as always, Paul.
Thank you Andrew. Yes, I’ve got Part 3 coming along very shortly….. watch this space 😊
I don’t know what a bunch of what you said about the pedals means, I just know it all sounds FANTASTIC when ya use em. Beautiful playing and perfect touch. Thanks for sharing.
Ah, thank you William! Your compliment is appreciated 😊
That was great Paul , and very informative . I'm quite new to the world of pedals and what they can do ,so I'm learning a lot from these vids of yours . Thanks .
Thanks John, delighted you’re enjoying my wee journey into this world. 😊
Paul. I have missed you. This is terrific. That LP looks like it sat in a window with direct sunlight for 20 years. The color of the binding and even the headstock logo is so yellow. I have an 82 Black Custom as well and mine isn't close to that yellow.
Thanks John. Yes, it seems nitro lacquer comes in several different types, and Gibson has used various. Maybe that’s why we see anomalies like this. Anyway, I’m glad you like my guitar. Cheers 🍻
Probably the best on the planet.
Hello Paul, I was watching Collin on Guitaristas and he mentioned you and your channell and said to check it out. So I did and this was the first video I have watched. I can say I will be watching much more. You are a wonderful guitar player with great soul. Im reallying liing the pedal and will be watching the next two videos today i am sure. anyways thanks for the great video and Cheers from Michigan and have a great weekend. God Bless
Well thank you Ernie, delighted you checked out my wee RUclips channel 👍. Greetings to you in Michigan from a windy Edinburgh Scotland 👋
you are a class act Paul, lovely stuff
Ah, thank you Eoin 😊
Hi Paul, I'm happy to see I'm not the only one going down that pitch dark hole looking for heavenly sounds. Once I said that, it stands clear to me we might be looking in the wrong direction 😆 You know, you sound good no matter what gear I've seen you use, but yeah that Harlot brings out some extra goodness to my ears. I suspect it is the way it is pushing some of those lower mid freq. Do you have a Boss GE-7 EQ or the likes laying around? Would be interesting to hear you add a bit of lower mids into the Kingsley. I did a test with loads of overdrive pedals and was very surprised that using just the GE-7 made such an impact. I haven't really experienced that much with using it in combination with my OD pedals but now that I'm thinking out loud, maybe I should... Anyways, thanks for letting us in on your journey. Love it! Cheers, Thor
Thanks Thor. Yes, I remember watching a recent video of yours - I think it was the one where you were striving for the perfect pedal for a Strat - and you featured an EQ pedal. I don’t know why, but I’ve never got round to trying that. It seems like a fantastic way of fine tuning your favourite drive pedal. I don’t currently have one but I’ll know doubt obtain one at some point. After all, Tom Bukovac always seems to have one on his board. And if it’s good enough for Tom…. 🤣
Very melodic and tasteful. Very enjoyable.
Thanks Mum. x
I've read that the Page can also give up more gain tone if it has a booster before it . I just received a PageTS ( A Page that has the "More" EQ lift button and corresponding knob, and general T-M-B dedicated knobs, two 3-way switches).
Its sitting on my table as it just arrived in near freezing temperatures. Soon it will be warm and I'll try it, eventually with a clean Spark Boost in front of it, and experiment from there.
Well I hope you like your new Kingsley hermannmaier, 🍻👍
After several hours, I can say it livens up my tone, and all the pedals on my board. I have it with one clean boost option in front, and a few od options after. More dimensionality to tone and with increased touch. And all that improvement at lower volumes when desired.
@@paulstaffordcook8799
Just discovered your channel and yes, those pedals are next level but Brother .....you're playing is the real inspiration. ✌🏾&💜
Well thank you man, I’m delighted you like my playing 🍻
Love your playing! Are you going into the front of your amp with these pedals or into the power amp (FX loop return)?
Thank you Chris, appreciated! I always go into the front of my amp, old school 😊
Both pedals sound incredible. As do the guitars, amp and playing!. Loved it!
Thank you Richard, delighted you liked my playing 👍
Great channel! And as a ‘wegian who lived in Auld Reekie for years I’m lovin’ this! I have loads of Kingsleys and they are just sublime. The Page especially is literally the one pedal I would never, ever sell. Superb playing, great chat - subbed!
Well thank you Mr C! Delighted you like the playing, and cheers for subscribing! Appreciated 🍻
Very interesting, I have not yet tried a valve pedal-you demonstrate them very well indeed. All the best!
Cheers Michael. Yeah, it’s a hole I knew I shouldn’t have jumped down….🤣
Beautiful guitar playing bro
Thanks Moshe Mem, cheers 🍻
Wowzers!!! That LP Custom though! 🔥

PS I sold my Astoria last month and I do regret it so nice to see you’ve still got yours! Don’t sell it or you’ll have trouble sleeping like me 😆
Of course, they are really good 👍🎸
Beautiful playing 🔥🙏🏻🔥
Thank you John 👍
Nice playing Paul as usual .
Those are some very nice pedals , instant bluses breaker sound and like u say ..it's now they feel... And the way you record your short films really does give us a good idea of the sound too , really good in the room sound, comes across well . I'm still after a freeze pedal but steady the ship !!! It's not cheap pedal !!!! Have a good weekend ; enjoy you r adventure in the wonderland of valves and pedals.......Nice !!!
Thank you Songline. Yes, I’m surrounded by warm tubes of glass. Actually, that’s probably why my wee guitar room is getting warmer and warmer. Wonder if my family should turn off the central heating and we all just huddle up in my little “room of hot valves”🤔
Paul you are a fantastic guitarist. I own the Harlot, but both are great. Have you experimented with different preamp tubes in these pedals?
Thanks for the compliment, it’s appreciated. No, I haven’t tried experimenting yet….
Great video Paul. Tbh the tones are nice, but no nicer than the tones in previous videos imo. I think we hear with our eyes sometimes.
Thanks Graeme. Actually, I think you might have hit the nail on the head. I’m just about to upload my conclusions in my Part 3 video… and you might be right.
loved the vid, some beautiful passages in there. As for the pedals........they all sound fantastic, couldn't pick one over the other, cant wait till next week when it's a pedal i can afford :) It's difficult reviewing stuff on here when the reviewer can get a tone from two planks and a bit of fence wire , but the expression on your face could sell anything :) thanks for posting mate
What a lovely comment Charlie, cheers 🍻. Yes, roll on Part 3, when hopefully we’ll all realise £50 can get you where you need to be 🤞
Hi Paul. I have the Minstrell v3 and geez it sounds so great with the jan RCA tube repl inside. Indeed got to manage the power supp in regard. This pedal will never quit the board for sure. Your playing is awsome though. God bless From Montreal
Thanks Norm, that’s interesting about the Minstrel…. that’s another fork to take down the rabbit Warren 🤣
Did you find Alice while you were down the rabbit hole?😆🤣😂😁
You will definitely have to do a full comparison between the Cornell and the Marshall because they are completely different animals altogether.
I like the added spice of the Harlot because it really bridges the other two pedals very well.
The truth is, you said it exactly right, a person can get along just fine without any of those pedals. A 10 band equalizer can shape the fat, skinny, or anything in between. Any number of tube overdrive pedals, screamers, fuzz, or whatever distortion is on your amp will get the same or similar sound.
Most of the classic sounds we know came from the amp and the player. Yes, there were a few pedals, but not a lot of choice.
I will say, the convenience of the Harlot would be pretty tempting if I didn't have the collection of pedals I already have.
The nice thing about all of those pedals is that you can attenuate by simply using the volume knob. Crank it up for the down and dirty or fade it back a bit.
Of course the difference between the Cornell and the Marshall is a whole other conversation as well.
I don't know how sensitive the valve pedals are or how much signal they to allow the sound influence, but I suppose that would be a preference thing for each player to sort out.
Let me know if you find Alice on your journey.🤣😂🤙
Cheers Paul 👌🤙
Still can’t find Alice! 🤣. But I’m gettin’ close I think. Part 3 coming up very shortly 😊. Cheers GW
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Good luck with Alice. 😆🤣🤪
Have a great weekend!🤙
Thank you Paul for another great video 🎸👍
Cheers Frank 😊
Lovely playing! (The pedals are ok too)
Thank you 😊👍
Your new Fender is amazing
If you mean the hard tail 'Strat' that's actually an Oswald. Sounds great, doesn't it!
@@Kevin-the-Just I know, but it is a Fender. People building their own Fender is still a Fender in any important aspect. You can put the make up that you want, but would still be a Fender. Form and sound
Thanks Ivan, I’m absolutely delighted with it. It’s light too, super comfy 😊
Once again Paul a great video, along with very interesting expensive effects pedals 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Mr Jinx. It will be interesting to see if my next vid “Part 3” will show that it’s all nonsense 🤣
@@paulstaffordcook8799 looking forward to it Paul, I immediately went on line after your video to checkout the Kingsley Page & Harlot, brilliant 🤩 equipment mate. Thanks once again, and looking forward to your next show 👍🏻👍🏻
Yean man, i know the Dumble circuit pretty well, n those HUGE mids are hard ta get unless u know wat ur doing esp in a 4 stage circuit! Kingsley is a really great builder! My friends here local have his amps, i roll me own :)
Yeah, there seems to be lots of love out there for Simon and his products. I’m certainly going to enjoy owning that Page 😊
Big difference between the two pedals but as FL posted, one is a boost and one is an overdrive. Could the Page be used to boost say the Tone City sweet cream or would the whole valve into transistor thing mess with your head. The Harlot sounds great. Looking forward to part three as your two affordable drives are on my shortlist.
Thanks Archie, I’m looking forward to making Part 3 - I’m sure I’ll learn something too 😊. Yes, comparing the Harlot to the Page is a bit “apples and oranges”, but fun and educational nonetheless. So in part 3 I’ll probably play a lick or two through the following: Sweet Cream, Kafir Lime, Steel Singer, Ryra klon, Boss Blues Driver, Green Tube, and my JTM SS - and see how they compare to the Page, Harlot, and Hagerman.
Thanks to the guy who sent you the harlot. Damn that is some pedal.
Thanks Fast Acesus. It’s awesome isn’t it 🤘
Wow beautiful tones all around, do you mind sharing what speaker is in your Cornell Romany 12?
Thank you So Jerz 👍. It’s the stock speaker and I believe it’s a 12 inch Jensen.
Hi Paul, before you go on the waiting list for the Harlot, I noticed that the Page is labelled as a tube boost, the Harlot is a tube overdrive. I n terms of strict comparison, is this apples v oranges? As I understand it a boost is for using with an amp on the point of breakup and gives a helping hand, but an overdrive can start from zero (clean). Obviously, an overdrive used at low settings can be used as a boost but a boost doesn’t have the same juice to replace an overdrive. Not saying you can’t use it, just that you’ll not be able to replicate an overdrive. You said you usually use your valve amps with a little bit of dirt. Would be interesting to compare slightly dirty amp with Page v same amp, clean, with the Harlot. Might be the genuine heavyweight championship bout! Right now you may be putting a heavyweight against a middle weight! Maybe Simon from Kinsey could clarify if you’re in touch with him. Cheers.
Thanks F L, you’re absolutely correct. Having said that, it can be fun comparing apples and oranges. Simon says the Page is a boost first and foremost, but says it will perform as an overdrive for light gain sounds - which is perfect for me. I’ve carried out various tests as you suggest and can confirm the Harlot can closely mimic the Page through tweaking of its controls. The Page can get kinda close too the Harlot, IF your start with an amp that’s already crunching. Ultimately, if you could only have one, I’d suggest the Harlot is the desert island pedal.
Great demo Paul with sublime playing as usual... looking forward to part three to find out how much this is going to cost! 🤷♂
Thank you Colin! And Part 3 coming along later this evening. Keep your money in your wallet Colin, you’ll see in Part 3 that simple and affordable solid state overdrives are perfectly able to compete with the valve versions 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 Excellent looking forward to that... and will be able to spend any money saved on guitars! 😆👍
Lovely melodic pieces you played there, Paul. A pleasant change from hearing other youtube guitarists just plying the pentatonic scale . Those pedals sound great, by the way. Have you considered dabbling with the Peter Green out of phase mod on one of your guitars?
Thanks Floaty10, cheers for the compliment. Yes, I’ve thought about that mod on a couple of occasions…. but just can’t bring myself to do it. I guess I just don’t love that sound quite enough to justify tampering with my Les Paul….
Beautiful black beauty! Is it all original? Pickups sound great!
Thanks Christian. Yes, all original except the knobs (volume & tone). They were changed purely for aesthetics. Pickups are the original “Classic ‘57s” 👍
Great video as usual !
Paul, i’ve just bought a Cornell « because » of you ! Great amp, I really love it.
What is you best recommended setting for clean and what is your favorite for crunch ?
Best regards from France
Thank you Nicobouds! And I’m delighted that my wee videos might have had a bearing on your decision to buy a Cornell! 😊. I tend to have my attenuation on setting D (quietest), EQs around 12 o’clock, and volume around 2. This gives me very slight (but noticeable) breakup at bedroom volume. And then when I want clean, I tend to just turn my guitar volume pot down to 8. I might turn my guitar tone pot up a little to add back some sparkle. I never seek out a clean tone at the amp…. just something I never do. My amp is always at breakup 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 i will try that thanks 😊
Well, It's been a while... Did you ever buy a Harlot?🙂... Fantastic demos on both!!!
Thanks seniordiscount, glad you liked the demos. As regards the Harlot, no, it was just too expensive. Plus it excelled in an area that my playing just isn’t going, i.e. I seem to be going cleaner and cleaner as the years roll on, and the Harlot is more of a crunch and higher gain kinda thing. Overall, I still maintain the Harlot is the single best OD I’ve ever played. But I’ll stick with my Page, which has NEVER left my board.
Well they sounds great, but I expected that. So the page is a boost, not necessarily an overdrive, which is what the Harlot is. So I would say they performed exactly as you would expect. I guess it comes down to what you want. I thought the Page was really amazing, it just gave more of what your tone already was... and I agree, CHEWY!
Hey, it only money, right?
Glad to see you got your Cornell back!
Thanks Wes. Yes, you’re absolutely right. Someone pointed out it was like comparing apples and oranges… but fun and educational nonetheless. I’ll restrain myself from buying the Harlot (it’s over £400 😫). I’ll be very content with the Page and the Hagerman. And yes, I’m SO pleased to have my Cornell back. The Marshall Astoria was a very worthy fall back, but it’s no Cornell 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 I liked the comparison, and the great tones!

Geez, great playing man! Do you mind me asking for tips on different scales? Trying to expand my knowledge of the guitar beyond major/minor and pentatonic :)
Hi jonkbaby. Thanks for the compliment, appreciated. Yes, I hope I can help. Here’s a link to a video I did which, I think, hits the nail on the head ruclips.net/video/Gr0VtjB3lcE/видео.html. In addition to this, you could type “Paul Stafford Cook Tricks of the trade” into RUclips and that would bring up 4 or 5 vids I did specifically focusing on certain keys. Fingers crossed you find something useful. On a more general note…. every time your band or backing track goes through the turnaround part of the chord sequence, that’s your short opportunity play “outside” your normal scales, i.e. diminished runs, and augmented runs work perfectly to spice everything up 😊
@@paulstaffordcook8799 thank you so much my dude, that is very generous of you!
Hi Paul, can the Harlot do what the Page does; I mean those lovely no-gain to low-gain tones? Great playing as always. 👍🏻
Cheers Kevin. Good question…. I can confirm there’s ways to make them imitate each other fairly closely…. But ultimately the Harlot can imitate the Page more convincingly (than the other way around). That said, I’m very happy to keep my Page, knowing I’ll probably not pursue owning a Harlot. I’m a low gain kinda guy, so I’m in my happy place with the Page 😊
Awesome playing🦾 which kingsley page is this pedal? The DS or the boost?

Do you have the Chasebliss preamp? ThinkIng selling and buying the harlot
Hi Lucian. No, I’ve never tried the Chasebliss.
Question is about your signal path is the page the first pedal your guitars seen? What is the first pedal in your signal path the page?
Good question Dan. It’s guitar > tuner > Page > Sweet Cream OD > Steel Singer OD > Harlot > Hagerman > Tremolo > Strymon Flint > Amp. Not sure how important all that is… or if I’d hear a difference of I changed things.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 cream into page might be different. Not sure. I got the cream after watching your channel. And the page a couple weeks ago. I've been on the waiting list. I ordered after seeing it on THAT PEDAL SHOW.

You’re 100% right….. it’s too late for me, but save yourselves. Run! 🤣
My understanding is that 12AX7s in pedals don't really add much to the circuit unless driven at higher voltages than the pedals provide. Any comments on this issue?
I’ve no idea on that one….. except to say that I really like both these pedals.
@@paulstaffordcook8799 I just realized that these pedals do operate at quite high voltage so my question wasn't relevant for these.
