  • So I've tried using the LK midi app together with AUM as some of you suggested to me and it is a good app. However LK is not working out fro me, but Drambo on the other hand does. Why is it that I like using Drambo for MIDI Sequencing inside AUM instead of LK? Watch and find out.

    Fantastic video. For me it´s important to have a Piano Roll because I don't have much ability to play the keys and at any time I need to edit some notes. I think that many other musicians need this feature also. Perhaps Drambo will add a Piano Roll in an upcoming update and LK will introduce MIDI CC in an upcoming update as well. If this happens it will be very advantageous for any IOS musician. Cheers!

    Thanks for the video, Jakob! Personally I can say that I fell in love with Drambo at the very beginning. And just like you I was obsessed with idea of "how-to-make-it-work-with-my-controller". I had Akai APC40 mk2 at that moment, so I tried to marry them together. All I can say is that they work flawlessly together! I can assign knobs, buttons, triggers, etc as I like. Apart from that, there`s a very cool thing that you can send MIDI from Drambo to APC40. That means that I`m able to make some kind of visual feedback, i.e. light up Solo, Mute, Rec, Active Track buttons and even light up Pads according to the Pattern that is currently playing.
    Not to mention other cool features of Drambo, like modularity, presets library, etc. Drambo is a killer! 👍
    Finally I`ve bought a NANOKEY/NANOKONTROL recently (they were at my "wanna-buy"-list for about last few years), but haven`t try yet to run them to control Drambo.
    BTW, why are you using NANOKEY/NANOKONTROL in wired-mode? Any advantages of that?

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  2 года назад

      I’m using them wires for power because I don’t want to waste regular batteries when I’m just using them at home. Ive even started using USB batteries while I’m out and about with them too.

      @@JakobHaq Got it! Thanks for reply 🙏 Personally I use rechargeable NiMH AAA-batteries for them, run about 3 hours (maybe even more), but of course you need to worry about the charging those batteries with additional AAA-charger. But yeah, wired-approach to avoid using batteries makes sense to me 👍

    Hi Jakob, thanks I learned a lot here. Drambo is the mega killer. It is a new experience. Thanks for giving the tip!! VS Apart from that LK I used 3 times and never ever again that mess sucks. Guys, watch out, LK is expensive and they try to sell parts of their app each for its own price. So if you like to have a silly midi keyboard on LK? Guy you have to pay extra.. no joke.. Furthremore they re using this buggy LK Bridge App you need to connect to ableton live (What kind of misconception, as normal MIDI over LAN would even work fine without that. As a resullt: LK = They want your Money and put holes in small wood!VS. Drambo = Is like Rambo for musicmaking, it is the Mac Gyver . Go Drambo Go! LOL! Best Regards

  • @MeerkatMuzic
    @MeerkatMuzic 3 года назад +2

    Non and 1 winner ! 😀 Both LK and Drambo are currently being updated at a hell of a pace I’m on both betas so both are good choices. Don’t forget 4 Pockets Midi Mixer now has remote control. If you own an external MIDI controller/mixer which is capable of sending MIDI CC/Note messages you can enable remote control and have direct control of MidiMixer using your hardware. To use this feature you must be able to configure your external controller to match the settings in MidiMixer. For instance incoming CC7 data on channel 1 controls fader 1, incoming CC7 data on channel 2 controls fader 2 and so on. These settings can be modified using the 'MIDI Settings' dialog. So the options now inside AUM for hardware support mapping etc is crazy, can take you longer to set up a midi session than actually jam ! with all these layers tools combining.

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  3 года назад +1

      That’s why I like MIDI learn. You can set it up once, save and then work of that as a template. I do not enjoy having to go to a laptop/desktop computer to re-configure a controller like I’ve had to do with the nano’s and IK iRig Pads for instance. It’s a huge wall to climb when one just wants to be creative. Like you say, you end up not making music 😂😅 Midi learn really solves that.

  •  3 года назад +3

    LK actually supports several midi controllers which make it possible to create and perform music without looking at your iPad’s screen. I tried LK with Akai APC keys 25 and Launchpad X and it works perfectly. The best thing is that you don’t need to do any midi learning, it works automatically.

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the info. It’s good to hear that some hardware controllers are supported. However I prefer midi learn because I don’t have to get a specific controller, I can just setup any controller with that system. Very often I end up wanting to set stuff if differently for one or two controls/buttons and then MIDI learn is gold to have.
      .
      Take the NanoKEY controller for instance. There is a native mode for it that allows it to work with KORG Gadget. But I never use the native mode because some of the knob controls are mapped in a way that is unintuitive for me. So I have to do my own mappings. This is why I prefer working with midi learn.

    My simple solution was to set up a Korg Gadget session with 8 Taipai's mapped to Korg Controllers, then map to whatever is in AUM. Means you can do midi loops, automation, and go back to edit all the mistakes afterwards. The only pain point is remembering to save the files with the same names so you can go back to them later.

    Hi Jakob. Awesome videos!! This one is exactly what I’ve been trying to setup with my Korg controllers. What is the minimum iPad model you would recommend for good performance? Would I need a pro with an M1 chip? Or would the older models be ok too? Also, can my AUM and Drambo purchases be used across both iPhone and iPad OS? Or would I need to buy them again for the iPad? Thanks!!!

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  Год назад

      Drambo and AUM are iOS universal apps that work for both iPad and iPhone. You buy them once and that’s it, as long as you’re using the same account across devices, you’ll have access to them. Not that many apps nowadays that one has to buy multiple times across different devices.
      Regrading minimum specs for an iPad, I really have no idea. I need more data basically. What do you intent to do?
      I usually tend to recommend getting the most powerful/new iPad one can afford. Take me for instance. I was stalking auction sites to be able to catch a deal. And back in 2020I did.
      I was able to get myself an iPad Pro 11” (256Gb) from 2018 for $500. That’s a steal and that iPad has carried me since. It’s still gonna be good for at least a year or two and could most likely work for longer.
      However, I have to upgrade soon since I’m making videos about mobile music making and it would be weird if I never talked about the M-series iPads.
      So whatever your budget might be, look into refurbished ones and or used ones. You could end up getting something really powerful for very little money. My final advice would be to not get an iPad that is older than 3 years. Also, the “consumer” iPads feel less powerful than a pro model. They’ve often got less RAM and too.
      An M1 pro might be awesome, however, the problem with both AUM and Drambo is that they are both very modular. One can do so much with them it’s not too hard to crash an M1 if one starts loading too many apps.
      Some apps are also are heavier on resources than others. It’s not a clear cut thing really and I haven’t found a good way of communicating this through my videos yet. 😅
      I did a video a while back to show how different it can be between apps. ruclips.net/video/TlLRUdEzugs/видео.html
      A little bit of nerd info. 😅
      A new M1 iPad is just as powerful as any desktop computer today. Problem is that many apps on iOS is still just running of 1-2 out of the 8 available cores in the processor. There are only 2-3 DAWs that support multi-threading and this is still something that developers need to catch up with.
      Hope this helps. 😅

    As others already wrote, LK does already support some controllers and they keep adding new stuff to the app at a high pace. The problem is that the documentation is not being updated at the same pace. There is also no changelog splash screen. If I wouldn’t follow the LK thread at the Audiobus forum I wouldn’t know about the hardware support. This being said, the integration of the supported Launchpads is just great. They work almost exactly the same way as with ableton. You have the visual feedback with colors for the clip launching and you have a mixer page on the LP where you can set levels, mutes, solo, arm, etc. Anyway, you are right that MIDI learn would be also much appreciated.

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  3 года назад

      You’re right, splash screen changelogs are great. That would be a good thin goth implement.
      The best thing about midi learn is that one does not need to rely on a specific controller (admittedly getting a launchpad to use with LK would be nice because if layout).

    Great video! I'm finding myself a bit stuck though and could use some guidance. Looking at the variety of Midi sequencers out there I don't see anything for longer sequences like say a 10 minute long ambient piece with variation throughout the track. It looks like maybe a piano roll-type sequencer might be ideal for something like that. I could perform in real-time in aum for 10 minutes and record, but then it's a lot harder to go back and tweak things...but a 10 minute long sequence also seems overwhelming. Maybe this is a very newby issue. Any advice would be helpful ✌️

    I initially bought LK because I saw it’s potential however I was unable to use it exactly because of the lack of midi learn. I ended up using several instances of Atom where I switch between them via Aum’s midi learn on by pass... Still I got the same problem: I am not able to remote control if the record loop is on or off - and this defeats the purpose of not having to open up the app and click a button :-(
    Thank you for addressing the problem with LK and thank you to Imaginando for listening :-) There seems to be light at the end of the rabbit hole ;-)

    Good thing with LK is that it’s using midi scenes together with midi tracks, and you can use it both as a midi looper and also as a daw to create your compositions. And it is working both standalone and auv3, which means you can load it in aum and make a part of aum automation. I like it but it has no tempo track and by that it is pretty smiliar to atom piano roll. In my opinion is possible to use with aum or audiobus 3 as a good alternative to standalone apps as cubasis 3. I do not comment about midi learn.

    One big point not mentioned would be doing a song, where you switch patterns on multiple instruments at once. I guess you could do that with scenes in Drambo, but you wouldn’t be able to treat each instrument separately. In LK, being Clío based, you have a lot more flexibility and variations to actually make a song with different parts in AUM.
    Also, it might be obvious but Drambo and LK are not excluding, you can trigger Drambo patterns from LK. Here’s a song I made live with AUM and LK, I use Drambo for drums and guitar stems. I don’t think it’d be as flexible (or even possible) with just Drambo.

    Drambo as a midi sequencer needs proper midi cc recording/playback and editing automation afterwards, in the same way as LK does. Thats what i miss from Drambo. Current you cant record any cc in this setup which is a pain. A great midi looper also records playbacks any midi cc you throw at it.
    Like Photon or Mozaic Flow patch.

    • @quinnzender
      @quinnzender 3 года назад +1

      Incoming CC can be converted to CV and recorded in the Flexi Sampler. So flexi is where you can store automation - which of course can be played back in sync with the pattern, or over many patterns. This works great if you have a knob controlling PAN. Just convert the incoming CC to CV with the [MIDI CC MODULATOR] module, the route that to flexi. Set Flexi record to 'pattern', and you're set. After recording is complete, route flexi to PAN - and your automation will be the same as played. As for
      Yes, its a workaround - but its pretty straightforward, and does work well. Editing won''t be the same with this method - but there are also more ways you can process and treat the automation with CV processors too. For example - you could play the automation in reverse, slice it, or scrub it fwd and back with an lfo.. The only other caveat is that Flexi recording length may not record long enough. I hear that the dev may increase recording length though.

    Jakob Haq - LK is not for me either. I really do enjoy using hardware controllers and sequencers. I have been looking for a good midi sequencer recorder to use with AUM. The best option for me has been using Korg Gadget with multiple instances of Taipei, one for each AUM channel. Yes, it’s a little bit of work to set up. That is why I saved an AUM template for this. Having nanoStudio and nanoKey Studio work natively with Gadget puts the whole thing together. You are completely buried in to your hardware and the only active screen is the Gadget screen. However, you do get a piano-roll you can edit whenever you wish.
    Thanks to your video I’m inspired to try a similar thing you did with drambo but with GR-16. Let’s see how that works. If at the end it appears that Drambo really is the easiest and most elegant solution to connecting your nano Studio controllers, I think you may have sold me on this software. I have been seeing a lot of good things with this app. Now that it can host AUV3 apps, this midi controller demo just sent me over the edge. Great job!

    So... I opened up LK in AUM and found only the “record” feature not covered my MIDI, you can set the controls via the “preferences” (its not automatically set-up and no “learn” yet either). Imagine likes to hide stuff in the shift-key access menus.
    The “tacked on” feeling might be due to LK being designed as a controller for Ableton Live originally... adding a controller probably never occurred to the developer until they made the MIDI clips.

    Before I even watch this, let me say LK is still a bit unstable but I’m on the beta and they update it very regularly.
    Here’s to hoping that eventually stops as it really is IMO the only issue with LK, I love it in any other way.
    But I’m also a super Drambo fan so.... I don’t know how I feel about this video 😂.
    And after watching...:
    I am pretty sure MIDI Mapping will come to LK eventually, and IMO the big difference here is how the "sequencers" work, IMO what separates LK from the rest is mostly it's Piano Roll.
    I've heard Piano Roll 2 is gonna be KICK ASS, so perhaps that will be a good alternative to LK's "timeline"/Piano Roll, but essentially I think LK is good when you want to use something like CUBASIS, but you would rather have that setup BE an AUM setup. Drambo is better for live sessions and actual sequencing as you point out; IMO LK is better for composing than it is for live looping *but it can live loop just like Ableton does, which in fact is a good tool for both sequencing and composing*.

    • @EnriquePage91
      @EnriquePage91 3 года назад +1

      I actually use Drambo just like you do in here quite a lot too! My alternative is also a Mozaic script using the Pad View (16 pads) and then I make sure that whenever I press a pad, all of the midi sent to Mozaic is cast to that pad number channel (so 1 to 16). This way I can either tie Mozaic up to other controllers, including physical ones, and since you can make the pads on Mozaic blink and change colors, I get indicators of on which midi channel I am currently on (I also make channels blink whenever a note message is played). It's pretty nice and since once you code it it's there forever, it makes for a great companion to even Drambo itself for this workflow. Essentially, with Mozaic you don't get a sequencer to record into (which is why I always use Drambo for this anyway), but being able to switch channels like you do is pretty convenient so I make sure to set it up with Mozaic and then send those messages to Drambo to switch tracks. that way, I can have my Mozaic window on the forefront giving me a clear indication of all the things I mentioned earlier. It is perhaps unnecessary, but I love it XD.
      The advantage of using them both is you can play with the idea of pressing a controller to switch tracks in many ways. For example, maybe you could have all channels on drambo be sent through a specific channel (so re-routing the midi) with Mozaic, and then using the techniques you showed here, you could for example out of a single pad press on Mozaic, have all synths play the same track (which would be a combination of all of their independent tracks you are sending to it through Drambo). This little setup I use it a lot for like live session jams, since it can give you a lot of juice out of simple sequences of midi. When you combine multiple sequences into one, and send them to multiple instruments which were before playing their independent parts, it makes for a huge "boom" moment. IDK, just stuff like that. You could also have Mozaic intercept the midi data and for example move it an octave up or down in the process, or even both, why not? Stuff like this makes Mozaic an essential tool especially in combination with Drambo. It really isn't THAT hard to script stuff in Mozaic. It maight take a little while to get used to it but once you start really getting into it you realize just how much stuff it can do for your live setups. Stuff that not even Drambo would be practical for, and I am a huge Drambo fan especially for stuff like sequencing external gear or using it as a "brainbox" for my sessions, so trust me Mozaic really is worth checking out if you don't mind learning a bit of programming (or if you already know how to program).
      Ultimately I think what's important to remark here, is the importance of using MIDI Messaging properly to accelerate your workflow. The incredible thing about tools such as Drambo and Mozaic is precisely that they let you take a lot of control when it comes down to defining WHAT you want them to do, and how. If you are looping in AUM, this is a MUST KNOW way of working imo. I spent months trying to figure the steps out, but once I laid it down, I was perfectly fine working on my phone. I barely ever needed to actually touch the screen. Now, when it comes to Drambo's ability to MIDI Map things so simply, well.. there is little to be said about this other than, it is an invaluable tool especially for setting things up quickly like you just did on this video.
      Besides, once you set that Drambo control thing up, you can always just save it as an AUM session preset and the next time you wanna use that workflow you just need to swap the synths and reconnect them to Drambo through the Matrix. pretty simple stuff that will get you up and running in a matter of seconds! And all your gear will work with it! So no need to do this countless times (everytime you start a project essentially).
      But ANYWAYS....
      HAQ! I do have a question.... you used your NanoKey ARP, is that arp running the native Nanokey Clock? Or are you sending MIDI Clock from AUM to it?
      I have tried to send MIDI Clock to my NanoKey but it never gets it. I cannot use the arpeggiator function unless I use their native clock which I do not want to use. If you know how to set this up that would be a nice comment to read :P.
