I’ve been watching you and another channel. I’ve been welding for 10 years and I’m 34. I’m slowly but surely starting my own business. Videos like these give me hope that I could make it on my own.

Good advice. You won’t know if you don’t ask and all they can say is no, move on to another contractor. Determination and desire is key. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

We overestimate what we can do in a day and we underestimate what we can do in a year.

I just got through welding a boom on a mini-excavator. Yesterday I installed a warning light on a pedestal at a home to indicate when the charging cable for the Tesla is not on the holder. It got broken again so this was my solution.

Crawling before you walk, walk before you run. Make a hand is extremely good advice. A CDL is a extremely useful license to have.

GET A CDL LICENSE!!!! These are a valuable commodity. They are like gold! They put you a few steps above everybody else! In Illinois, you need a really clean driving record and background check.

Nothing can take away your skill and knowledge but if you get hurt and are really outta shape that changes things. Having some level of fitness is important for injury recovery.

Great advice! As it turns out, I drove a tractor-trailer for 13-1/2 years before going into business myself. I’ve maintained my CDL and there are times that I actually do use it, not that my work slows down but, it breaks the monotony up for a few days. Stay motivated and don’t quit trying just because you got told no a few times.

A CDL has been a waste of money and time for me. 40+ applications two interviews and no job. I just left one interview for driving a sewer pump tanker to an offload site two hours away and other work as well. The place looked like a junk yard. The Freightliner was a 90’s model and damaged. It was sitting next to another tanker trailer that was rusted so bad the undercarriage broke and it was nose first in the dirt, just sitting. Several issues I caught onto about his business practices. I overheard him talking about me to one of his other guys and he said, “this guy is way over qualified for this job…”. I have a decision to make this weekend, but honestly can’t see working for this guy, except maybe to get trained and buy my own rig. I’m a county over from him, so a 50 minute drive for me, not really competition.

Welding can be one of many in your collection of skills that could get you in the door. But it's like playing the guitar. Only a few are employed at the top level recording rock solos with SlipKnot. That doesn't mean there aren't plenty of other guys good enough to play at dive bars, weddings and first birthday lūʻau.

umbrella policy is pretty cheap. And yes LLC is a must but you need to get an operating agreement to go along with it.

Chris, I’ve been working on building a side hustle for years, managed to get work to pay for my welding classes and certification. Work 2 hours OT per day buy 1 new tool a paycheck
Work with our tree crew guys to help me get my CDL. So far so good . Get hit by a Tesla on a motorcycle, now as bad as that sounds , I have secured “funding” , I got an old truck 2009
Here comes the rub I live in California, now I have 2 engine drives (used) but still usable.
    But the won’t last forever
The state is banning pretty much everything with a engine ( lawn mowers, leaf blowers , string trimmers 2024 ,word is chain saws too) I looked at the Esab battery hybrid welder ,it may be good for some jobs but I kinda hate gambling on new technology. I plan on 2 new engine drives 1 gas 1 diesel( diesel is being phased out ) I dislike being forced to choose, side hustles are hard enough , Sorry for being long winded, thank you for your videos

    • @TaylorWelding

that’s tough… Priority might need to be getting the heck out of that state

Good advice! Pipeline welder and Heavy equipment welders are almost polar opposite. Pipe clamps,Darby equipment skids and pancake hoods. Vs. Exothermic lancing pins, Carbon arc gouging 50 Lbs. Of molten steel in minutes.. and buring .120 flux cored wire is much different. But if you have the will to learn and become productive in the field you will do very well for yourself!😊... CDL is also a necessity in the machinery/ truck repair business.

Pipeline welders are kinda like lineman in that you have to be a “jack of all trades” and apply yourself in every way to get the experience to even be considered for the job.

Always like watching your channel, you got some good content. I've been inspired to get into travel welding after being in the manufacturing welding industry for a couple years, I said I want to try my hand on the road and I admit, I've always strived for a better price when it comes to this industry and to learn as much as possible.
