Which fire department gets the extra $100 million? That big number you throw out is about 10% of the current LA FD budget.....ANNUALLY. What about the rest of the FD in California? Rest of the nation? Where does the $ come from. I believe there is govt waste. I believe most FD & PD could put more money to use. If an extra $1 Billion had been spread around CA fire departments every year for the last couple decades, it would not have prevented all fires, but if it had, I can guarantee you this, people would only be asking why we spend so much on FD when there are no fires.

Aussie fire fighter , when these fires are get this savage it doesn't matter how much you have as far as fire fighting equipment , there's no way no matter what you throw at it you will always loose the fight. Building to the environmental conditions is one of the most positive ways of keeping infrastructure safe and those who live thier lives in intact and safe. There has been great advances in construction techniques to build fire safe homes and maintaining good fire brakes around homes which in turn helps greatly in helping to stop these fires turning into massive fire storms with flames hundreds of feet high that produce massive up draft's and winds that will start of new fire fronts many miles away. These fires hit areas of LA again and again. 1978 . . . Malibu gets hit on average twice a decade. Most often these fires are driven by high winds that also prevent the firefighters from using aircraft to drop water. These aircraft can be useful to fight fires but given that they cannot drop in high winds, they are no substitute for investment in ground-based firefighters and equipment.

For me as a german its mind boggling to see how these houses are built. Its only the chimney and maybe a wall left. I can understand why insurance companies wont want to cover houses built of cardboard. Of course a well build house with something like our german klinker wont can withstand a huge fire but it seems to be more resistent and easier to rebuilt.
Brick/stonework houses cannot be made in California due to the high likelyhood of collapse during an earthquake. The temperature of the fires also makes masonry useless, as the bricks explode due to the heat and mortar breaks down.
I live in Germany but I have to tell you, no matter how the house is built, it will be a write off at the end of the day. With winds so strong is just a matter of time until a window is broken and the house burns from inside out. The thermal currents of an wildfire are crazy. It can also spread much quicker than you might think.

Prescribed burns are methods commonly used by state governments in Australia to reduce fuel loads. I recently moved from Csnberra to a city in coluntry Victoria. Canberra is a city which was heavily affected by fire in 2003. Not as badly as LA in 25, but it lost a few suburbs, 5 deaths and unsurprisingly, the firefighters lost access to town water. Like LA, water systems were overwhelmed. There is no way to fight such a fire. Canberra uses prescribed burns in prep for the fire season every year.
Aboriginal communities been doing it for thousands of years. But yea... they stopped didn't they. Anyways. Different subject that. I live in the bush and every winter I prepare my own land.
Houses burning use to be a routine issue but now we have building codes and sprinklers and don't use open flame heating so most of the fire damage now is crazy out of control blazes like this.

If I remember well, Beriev-200 series aircraft can carry more water, very meneuverable, faster, and can be refilled in 14 secound meneuver touching the water surface. Not wanting to use it because it is Russian made can be somewhat reasonable, not even developing something really comparable is a bigger problem, not even having the existing aircraft in large enough number is a big problem.

I did the math. 20 of these planes in a line making one drop can drop the equivalent of a quarter inch of rain over 4 acres…These fixed wing aircraft can’t make precision drops at night or in high winds but I imagine that 100 of these making loops at 1,000 feet above the terrain dropping this water could make a big impact! I mean you are talking about the ability to produce a significant rain storm over 20 acres at a time! And for that matter, these “super scooper” planes are like 3 decades old! Put out a contract for 100 planes at $50 million per plane that can quadruple that output and I think companies would have no problem delivering!
The super scoopers work out on the coast but may not be effective where the reservoirs are too small for them to land. This would be putting too many eggs in one basket for CALFIRE, as they also need to have a fleet of aircraft to lay retardant lines. I agree that CALFIRE should expand their aerial firefighting fleet but you must know that they should put the ground pounders first since the whole point of aerial assets is to slow the spread enough for hand & dozer crews to dig line to create fire breaks and support that retardant line
Don't blame them... The Govt could buy their own, parse it of as a National Guard unit or part of the Air Force or Coast Guard and station them across the country like the Navy... West fleet, East fleet... Etc.
