I just bought this phone. Yes, getting updates is important, but man the phone just works. The chipset appears to be just right for its software. It doesn't get hot and I can go 1.5 day with one charge. I dont do a lot of gaming, but I use it as my back up for work on a bunch of communications apps, so I am on it frequently. As someone who shops in this exact segment, I wrestle with this issue every time I start looking for a new phone. But one thing I have came to the realization of is I almost always am in the market for a new device before I ever reach E.O.L. for whatever current phone I'm using. I know my use case is probably different than many, but that's the best argument I can make as to why Moto hasn't revised their software update policy yet. But the drawbacks on it are the 4 gigs of ram & the speakers are not as good as on my Stylus 2023 which is still running Android 13. I I'm seriously considering the Pixel 8a getting it around Christmas.
I got this phone a month ago and love it. The screen is absolutely beautiful and amazing. Clearly visible in direct sunlight. The phone goes faster than my finger can tap. It runs smoothly in all apps & games ive played. Camera also great. I got the 128gb/ 8gn ram for $199.99 fyi has all specs as 256gb. The storage is only difference.
The only motorola phones that come with more than one major software update multiple years of Android is the Edge series, the Razor series, and the think phone. The G series never had more than one android update. They all come with at least three years of security updates. Come on! You knew that already.
Yes, and like I said, that was ok back in the day. Google used to offer three for years, now we have 7. Things change. Cars used to not have airbags for years too, should we not get those either because they never had that before? Please.
I'm interested in this phone but the only negative I have that this guy pointed out is the Always on Display. I need that feature, I could care less about the updates because that's the same reason I want to leave Samsung. All they do is break their phones and remove features that I love using because of their stupid OS updates.
I have this phone and yes it doesn't have "always on" but I can (and have) set the screen timeout to 30 minutes and turned on the Attentive display on so that the phone will sit for 29:59 without turning the screen of if I set it down and don't look at it, which will never happen. I don't understand why this isn't as close to always on as you need to get.
@richg0404 Yeah, that's a feature I have to have and I bought the phone and didn't like it and the cameras were terrible lol I returned it on Amazon and instead bought a Note 10+ on eBay for a great deal. I'm enjoying the phone and it's a million times better than my previous phone, the A71 5G.
1 major upgrade? That's unacceptable, this is one of the reasons of why I stopped using motorola phones, even samsung budget phones are getting 4 major updates. Motorola is pathetic
@@davidmurling4252 Even though a lot of people you know do it doesn't mean that everyone wants to do that. The more times you replace a smartphone then that's more money used for replacements. Some people are fine holding onto phones for longer periods of time.
I'd rather not get the update if it bricks the phone time after time with Samsung they hit me with a final update that forces you to give it up, Moto will last
Hi. Thanks for the video. How is the on-screen fingerprint scanner? This is the only thing giving me pause. Also, is it dual sim (dual standby)? Nana + esim? Appreciate your time.
I have this phone and love the on screen fingerprint scanner. He mentions it in one of his other videos that it’s really excellent. I use it more than my iPhone 13 Pro Max because I’m sick of the face recognition on the iPhone you’ll be impressed if you get one.
I have been using mine through a waterproof case with a built in screen protector, along with an already added screen protector to the phone itself and it works really well even if my fingers are dirty. I fish a lot and my hands constantly have dirt on them.
Then look at Samsung and Pixel. I hear this complaint everywhere. Like seriously. Go lease to own(or cash out) with Samsung or Pixel if you want the yearly OS or whatever update. Seriously. I prefer to keep my Motorola phone for 2-3 years and then upgrade. Best investment even without the yearly OS update. You do the thinking how you prefer keeping your phone. 3-5 years. Then go with Samsung or Pixel unless, you are like those leasers that upgrade every year. Makes no sense to have the new phone every year. Motorola has been the best bang even without the upgrade. I normally upgrade my Motorola 3 years. Easy on my pocket.
I just updated from moto G stylus 5s 2021 too2024 went from android 11-14 and could not see the difference between them on MOTO OS. The three years of security updates is much more valuable than the incremental tweeks in the android OS changes today.
@@bassyey if Verizon, T-Mobile and ATT pick all Motorola lineup of phones, Motorola will have the capability to offer us the OS. Think about that. What the fucc you talking about.
Out of all the g series phones this is one of three g series that are inching closer to entry level flagship back a couple years ago I had the privilege of having one of the first g series quote unquote flagship it was the Moto g100 if anyone remembers it has the Snapdragon 870 which was basically an overclocked 865 plus that phone was fast. In the second one was the g200 which we never got here stateside
The even MORE bizarre thing is that the Edge 50 Fusion, for the same money (except for the stylus, headphone jack, microSD card slot and wireless charging absent on the Fusion) is BETTER in every other aspect, and should get 3 OS updates and 4 years of security patches. It's just bizarre.
I have an old trade-in sitting in the drawer so with in total I would only end up paying $220 for this phone and I only need it for the headphone jack and the expandable memory because I need to be able to check my trail camera cards right from my phone when I'm in the woods would be super helpful. And my motorcycle stereo uses a headphone jack so I've been using a dongle now I could get rid of the dongle if I get this mostly just for the music on the bike
You can get these through prepaid carriers for cheaper at least, bought my current 2021 Stylus 5G for $149 when it launched ($399 retail) I'm just waiting for my carrier to get the 2024 model especially since security updates ended for the 2021 model. 2024 Stylus looks like a nice upgrade specs wise.
Thank you for taking the time to record a review. I shall play this video back a few times, as I need to become aclamated to my Motorola Moto 5G Stylus (2023).
The point isn't people keeping the phone for seven years, although more people than you think do. As long as it keeps basic functionality, a large group of people are happy. Longer software updates help that. In addition, it helps resale value, a phone still in software support fetches more than one that is no longer supported. Why are so many people NOT in favor of more support? Other companies offer it, so should Moto, it doesn't hurt anyone and should be pointed out. More support is always going to be better.
Right on, as usual, Steve! With the sorely lacking support, the entire package is soured. With adding the P-OLED @ 1200 nits, 8GB RAM, OIS on the main lens, & wireless charging, Moto has finally addressed all the deficiencies, and the market so desperately needs a budget stylus phone! It's simply baffling to me why Motorola just won't stand up and commit to supporting their phones for 5 yrs!!! It would only help their bottom-line. 🤦🏼♂️

As android versions change if your phone doesn't update to newer version it eventually will stop working and run like crap. This way you have to buy a new phone in another year maybe 2.i use my phones for about 5 years and usually change them when I get locked out by the software not updating
Motorola has always been all over the place with their updates. My old moto X4 received two major OS updates yet the Z3 the flagship at the time received only one OS update.
Sorry bud. But most people don’t care about the always on display and that major upgrade beyond one. I mean it’s a $300 phone man. What do you want for it. That’s nothing. The phone is practically free, and otherwise great. I can’t stand that always on display, it’s annoying and drains your battery.
System updates are pretty much the same nowadays. I have a motorola g stylus 2022 with android 13 and pixel 6a with android 15. It is pretty much the same thing. 13, 14, 15? Pretty much the same. I think people assume every system update is better and that isn't the truth. In the past, we would see significant change but not now.
I have a Samsung phone and I don't even use the always on display on that I've got it set as what is it tap to show or whatever Samsung calls it but you don't need and always on display there's no reason to have your phone screen lit up when you're not doing anything on it I always thought that was just totally asinine
Ok but that’s the point, you can see if you got a notification worth opening the phone for or it’s nonsense. Just because you don’t use it doesn’t mean everyone else shouldn’t have the option.
i can live with the one major android upgrade on this phone because i only paid 99$ for mine! mine is the straight talk one and walmart was offering litteraly 100$ off if you signed up for walmart plus and bought it which is exactly what i did!
I’ve watched a few videos on this phone so far. And I’ve heard 3, 4 or 5 years of security updates. I have no idea who’s right or not 😂 but maybe the lack of support is due to this phone just being a stepping stone for an even better version of the moto g stylus coming soon? Within the next year or two? It’s a great phone, I wouldn’t be able to see why they aren’t headed towards turning this into a flagship phone. Especially considering how good this product is
I dig this phone I got the Carmel latte I had the a54 galaxy not impressed and I like the wireless charging with the stylus but I am no techie works great I get a new phone about every year in a half too 2 years anyways

@@StevealiciousTech _I think I understand your query. The OS upgrade will be just an upgrade to Android 14. Not an upgrade from an old OS (14) to a new OS (15). If that's true then that's a real bummer._

Gorilla glass "Corning" doesn't have a patent on double doped silica. I can make it in my garage pretty easily. It was invented in west Germany shortly after WW2.
I have the Motoi g power 5g 2023 that came with Android 13, and it was supposed to upgrade to 14 by now. What happened? This is August and still no 14 upgrade.
These phones are very capable of 5 years of android updates...it's sad that Motorola only updates 1 version. I will probaby go with a Samsung phone next...
I've been using Android 11 on my Moto G Stylus 2021 for years without issue. I always install a security app though (on any phone). To me its not a huge deal to not have updates for a new Android version. Plus phones don't last forever, you tend to replace then after a few years. I'm upgrading to a new phone this year but I could care less about Android updates.
I love Motorola phones but the software support is abysmal. I don't really have a problem with how many OS updates they offer, it's the amount of time it takes to receive basic security and software updates. I own an Edge 2023 and Razr Plus and I have never received a bi-monthly security patch. It's always 90 days or much longer. My Razr plus is currently rocking a March 1st security patch. OS updates are rolled out typically a year or more from when the OS is released. This is the very reason Motorola doesn't offer more in terms of updates. It's not because they don't want to, it's because they are simply too inept to support all the different global models. It's unfortunate because I enjoy the devices.
Yeah, and that's my argument to people who say they don't care about the promised updates. It's especially a problem for Moto because of how they stretch them out. So now with fewer promised updates, it gives them even more reason to be sluggish.
@@StevealiciousTech Yes, spot on. Motorola is a legacy brand and I think there is a large segment of users that are perhaps older and aren't particularly tech savvy. The phones are simple to use and they prefer them not to be tinkered with. So updates don't matter and I read a lot of users lament that. I get it, and there's nothing wrong with feeling that way. But Moto could really increase their market share if they would show improvement in the area of software support. Their devices look amazing and the user experience is great.
eco leather back is the WORST decision ever. That stuff will peel, flake, etc, over time, people are going to reeealllly regret this purchase. Motorola dropped the ball with that, they should have put plastic, glass or metal instead.

The update support is atrocious. This is a key reason I stopped using all motorola phones. They really need to update their A game.
It's pretty bad!
Please.
@@StevealiciousTech Do people really keep their phones for 7 years?
@@tapeo1most people do not. The amount of time people have kept their phones has increased. Think it's something like 3 or 4 years now.
Major updates can slow down a phone. Three years of security updates is sufficient. I wouldn't use the phone as a primary driver longer than that
@@muaddib878 I guess it depends on the phone. Add my Samsung note 20 for four years. It still work great until I traded in this year
A lot of the people I know upgrade their phone every couple of years anyway
@@davidmurling4252 Even though a lot of people you know do it doesn't mean that everyone wants to do that. The more times you replace a smartphone then that's more money used for replacements. Some people are fine holding onto phones for longer periods of time.
I'd rather not get the update if it bricks the phone time after time with Samsung they hit me with a final update that forces you to give it up, Moto will last
I can't tell one version of Android from another..the changes are all small incremental things.
Any having issues with camera not focusing?
I wanted the 2024 Moto G Stylus 5g.. but the one year update is a deal breaker, unfortunately.
@@DSPNWtoCali wtf are you saying? Samsung offers 5 years of update on their 350 USD. phone. Nobody is leasing 350.
@@bassyey if Verizon, T-Mobile and ATT pick all Motorola lineup of phones, Motorola will have the capability to offer us the OS.
Think about that. What the fucc you talking about.
One thing I am wondering is if the stylus pen is pressure sensitive which is utilized with other apps like ibis paint x.
I'm pay $259.99 in Metro pcs and the true is nice phone. Who knows, Motorola may continue adding updates.
I hope so! But nice phone for sure.
I should have bought the Stylus. I bought the moto g 5G 2023. I could have bought the Stylus 2024 for $40 more on a 4th of July sale at Best buy.
Looks good, but I'd wait for a sale as you know it's coming .
I kind of wish Motorola would've kept the name Moto X and labeled this phone Moto X Stylus 5G.
I thinnk that the phone is going to be popular enough that Moto will have more updates than is stated.
Thank you for pointing out the one year of update. I was ready to buy but now I am thinking Samsung again.
The battery on the Motorola 5G stylus is great and it lasts longer than expected
Why would some phones get 7 years of updates. Who is going to be using a phone as their daily driver for that long? What's the point?
The point isn't people keeping the phone for seven years, although more people than you think do. As long as it keeps basic functionality, a large group of people are happy. Longer software updates help that. In addition, it helps resale value, a phone still in software support fetches more than one that is no longer supported. Why are so many people NOT in favor of more support? Other companies offer it, so should Moto, it doesn't hurt anyone and should be pointed out. More support is always going to be better.
*hides my iphone 6* No one
I'm still using my galaxy J7 Prime. It's from 2014 so 10 years.
Great straight up review. No sugar coating. Nice!
Thanks!
I just picked it up for $249 and when I need to upgrade, I will. At that price, it was hard to pass up. And the red with a clear case is gorgeous.
You keep a phone for 5 years?
@@admiralkrankandhismightyba158 Yep, coming up on 3 years w/ my Surface Duo 2. Wife is still using the SG S20 FE. Replaced my kids SG S10e's recently. I use devices until support ends.
@@bricequirl that's cool. Wish I could say the same. My wife is like that. I'm just curious how many people like me drop their phone and use the heck out of them so that they don't last even two years.
what country are you in where they have a red one
US.
What is the importance of updating?
To keep your phone running smoothly with your applications and other software.
Really weird. Thought they were on the right track after last year.
I will say this, for people who don't care as much about new features, the one major update and 3 years of security updates aren't super important.
Steve thinkphone or edge plus 2023 if price dont matter?
Eh, I don't know at this point. I like the ThinkPhone a lot but if you want a more traditional flagship the Edge Plus
_Here's how I see it. I just bought this phone Aug. 8, 2024 and it came with Android 14. I suspect I'm entitled to an OS upgrade to Android 15 (codenamed _*_Vanilla Ice Cream_*_ ) when it becomes available. So, after Android 15, that's it for this specific phone, until Android 16._
I don't quite follow what you mean...
@@StevealiciousTech _I think I understand your query. The OS upgrade will be just an upgrade to Android 14. Not an upgrade from an old OS (14) to a new OS (15). If that's true then that's a real bummer._
Not seen my oppo update for yonks something I'm not bothered about tbh ... this phone looks nice though nice features to be had I'm seriously thinking of getting this as I hate the curved screen on mine drives me nuts !
I have to get it I accidentally smashed my other phone and this one is what I can afford barely . So one year it is then I'll probably upgrade to the moto g stylus and 2025
Two weeks into December 2024, and the price has dropped to $249.99 from Motorola. I just can't pass it up, even with only 1 O/S update.
The lack of software updates is a dead give away, that Moto sees this as basically a 1-2 yr phone. Not good!!! I have the Moto G Power 5G 2024, and it's not even living up to the "Power" label. My Moto G Power 2020 was , way better battery wise.
Less than 2 iterations update should be illegal
Gorilla glass "Corning" doesn't have a patent on double doped silica. I can make it in my garage pretty easily. It was invented in west Germany shortly after WW2.
Not being able to install apps on the sd card makes the sd useless. Only Samsung let's you do that.
I have the Motoi g power 5g 2023 that came with Android 13, and it was supposed to upgrade to 14 by now. What happened? This is August and still no 14 upgrade.
its a cheap plastic phone with one year update only. it needs to be a $125.00 phone.
I hear some motorola phone carry 3 years of updates now. Never had a Motorola before though.
I just got it for the service with cricket for free dude just switch to cricket and you can get it free I got a nice speaker too for free
Mine was $250, so I guess I gotta good deal😁
Don't worry it nice enough to use it❤.
There is an always on display. You go to wallpapers > live > always-on then set it to be whatever you want.
I had to get it because it's a good phone but I am absolutely heartbroken about the OS upgrades I won't stick with it for very long because of that
I hear some motorola carry 3 years of updates. , now. Not sure which motorola phones have that many updates. Updates are really important these days.

All phones should receive at the least 5 years of updates.
Just got this phone for $250 on Amazon

Does it connect to 5G SA and VoNR for calls? I have the 2023 version and T-Mobile currently forces the phone to make calls over 4G LTE😢.
@@lon_dawg I'm pretty sure it uses 5g for calls I have one now but I'm not 100% how would I find out
I love Motorola phones but the software support is abysmal.
I could care less about updates. I current Moto phone is 4.5 years old and is just fine.
Now the price is $300. It's amazing phone at this price no complaints. They are not going to give iPhone pro15 for $300. . Major buy
I'm going to get one probably today. Cricket is selling it for $120 if you have an existing number with them
Great phone for the price But the Big Caveat is moto's "Lack" of OS updates... it has great specs and moto has "ONE" update??? I'll pass
I ordered it know it will be my new back up phone in a year or 2, and to replace my current phone which will be my back up phone.

Atrocious software support from Motorola. Very disappointing. Another gripe is the lack of IPx7 water submersible for 30 min.
$400 is a cheap phone? I've never even paid $200 for a phone.
Motorola is in the dark ages?????? Wake up and release a beast 💥💥💥
Yes but the price is only $399.
With the trade-in of an old garbage phone brings it down to 220

eco leather back is the WORST decision ever. That stuff will peel, flake, etc, over time, people are going to reeealllly regret this purchase.
Motorola dropped the ball with that, they should have put plastic, glass or metal instead.
Motorola Edge and Moto Razr+ both over a year in without issues. Take care of it and it'll be fine.
They only want buyers to keep it for 12 to 24 months? 😂 They just want to grow ever more e waste. Well, use a case.
That update limitation is probably because they are putting their time in AI software and hardware for the newer models.
I'm sure I've seen one relatively well know You Tuber call this the worst phone Motorola have even made. Unless it was last years..
brother let just hope they at least give that because ...moto is always late or seems like the updates are never going to come for the moto devices when rest pop brands are efficient and almost on time on their promises
Definitely, that's why fewer updates are concerning.
You remind me of a radio host
I don't understand why they do love samsung that don't have headJack and also thousand dollar more than Moto have everything, isn't that right?
I wish it had the updates so I didn't have to get a new phone on a year as d about 3 months
If it has atkeaet 3 years of os updates is be so happy even to android 17 ..but it doesn't
