This is the authentic way. Many are showing to knot the Sarees first which is wrong. Nobody in India knots sarees. A knot will ruin the saree and its complex designs.

I have been wanting to wear a practice saree for my classes ... but it just seems like so much work.., especially because I have difficulty with making the pleats ... and it just doesn’t look so neat when I tried it a couple of times... so I just gave up.
