The video shows one of the basic ways to tie a saree so it is comfortable to move in, and also dance. Please note that this saree is a little longer than the normal 6 yard saree, but not as long as a 9 yard saree. This is a saree that has a running blouse so it adds about 1 meter to the normal saree. If you do use the 6 yard saree, the dhoti will look a little shorter in this style of tying.
I like to wear tights inside, but you can also try slightly loser, shorter salwar type pants.
The material of the saree in the video is silk georgette, but this works well with any material that has some flow. Thin cotton and thin silk work well as well.
This is just one way that you can tie your saree comfortably to dance, there are many other ways that dancers tie their sarees. I will try to create a series of the types of dance sarees. Please let me know if this was helpful and leave some feedback.

I know virtually nothing about Bharatanatyam or any other performing arts. I am about as graceful as a hog. And yet.. I watch every video by you to the end. That fact that your art speaks volumes to someone as unlearned as I am is a testament to your grace and skill. The world is a better place because of you.

Lugada or nauwari is subtly different dear. Biggest difference being the pleats themselves are facing towards the right than the left. There is not just the back tuck but essentially back fall is also tucked in the front first. If you ever wore a nauwari you'd know.

Woah! This was so enlightening. The natural "missing link" between all the skirt-like drapes (esp. nivi) and dhoti/peshwari (pant-like). Indeed, tucking the front of the skirt in the back or the back in the front is the most natural thing to do when a woman needs more freedom of movement without compromising the decency.
