I watched this video 3 months ago when I first started playing, and now I watched it it again now I'm 200 hours in and running a 15+, and I still learn new things.
After pouring in thousands of hours into this game, I manage to come to this and learn so much more about the complexity and finesse of the game and this class in specific. Amazing video, perhaps all time favorite StS video, and I would love to see a part 2. Keep it up!

Yeah if that was the case in this run I'm guessing it would have been barely worth taking? Because you lose an energy once for a more consistent deck, whereas before it's a no brainer
I loved this video! I don't even mind that you didn't win the run, seeing you go into detail on decisions on a hard run like this was very interesting and I learned a lot more than I would have on some run where you get an OP combo early on and make a bunch of obvious choices. I found it interesting how much you focused on immediate needs for the deck over long term goals- I think this is where I fail the most in this game, I get a few parts of a good deck and try too hard to make it happen. If I were playing this run I'd have gone much more heavily into the discard synergies for example, hearing you talk about specific needs for the enemies in that act made me entirely rethink how I value cards.
Great vid. Cogent thoughts, pleasant voice, good smile. These 3 hours of absorbing knowledge probably saved me a solid 20+ hours of trial and error in-game.
I watched this yesterday and went on a 3 win streak (so far) on silent. While many of the details are outdated, the big picture strategy is still very similar. Thanks, Jorbs

I've just done it while watching this: I've finally beat the heart. I was still just on ascension 2 on the Silent but still... it took over 200 hours of gameplay to get my first win against the heart even when it's not as powerful as it could be and I'm soooo happy. :D

I really enjoy your decision making process, I think people can apply this kind of thinking to other aspects of their life too, not just in this video game.
For ascension 20+heart, the most consistent way for winning with Silent has actually been Catalyst to me. In many runs, I even picked Catalyst up before I had any poison and it worked itself out miraculously. Double Catalyst+ simply wins fights so well. Course you dont get some way of double-catalyst in every run... But I made it happen in surprisingly many runs. Also, the good old Fumes+Stack Defence works out pretty well. The heart is the biggest problem there, cause it can overwhelm Silent at a certain point.
There is a saying which in my opinion fits very well to the overexplained videos you make, which came to my mind when you were talking about which cards to upgrade: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
Well damn, just came across this and holy shit man, that was mind blowing. I would have failed that run on Bird fight of act 2 itself. Paying attention to relics, thinking about all the maths, next turns and constantly looking into draw pile; I never do those things. I think this video had made me a tad bit better Slay the Spire player. Good stuff, mate.
I think you did have one other line against the stabby book: You had 24 hp. Footwork + Fumes + 1x defend gives 7 block, he hits you for 21, you end up at 10 (you keep the phantasmal killer). Next turn you would use the block potion, get hit for 28, and have to draw 2 backflips, then play phantasmal to end up at 6 hp. With the remaining cards, being less than your hand size, you're guaranteed the 160 hit. If you then also draw your Backstab again, with Fumes dealing 5 that should be enough. But you only get 1 shot at drawing the backstab.... It ends up being much worse. I'd say the 5/13 odds you had of winning is the best line I've seen so far (playing just the Neutralize would still leave you 1 damage short of killing it). Fascinating little math puzzle that (as in which strategy gives you the best odds of winning that 1st turn after having played the acrobatics).
Don't know if this will reach you since it's a year+ later but I want to say that this was a very good video. You explained how you want to build a deck in this game very well, weighing how to get through act 1 while getting through the entire game very well. It's also a very good demonstration of how you can do very well but still die on Ascention 20 at any point, since you mainly carried through in the run without many noticeable mistakes. Of course, you can pick it apart in retrospect, however hindsight is 20/20 in that respect. If this was too long people just need to run your videos in 1.5 or 1.25 speed. But this made me subscribe for more content. Keep up the great work! Gonna go into your more recent videos after this.
I struggled for a long time to finish a run. After watching this video i played with these tips in mind and finished the run on the first try. But on lower ascensions.
To question about if getting a rare card from a boss room resets the chance of getting better cards: it does. Also worth noting that the chance of getting better cards only goes up when you get a common card, uncommon cards don't effect the odds. For anyone who wants to check my work, look at the AbstractDungeon class, the method is getRewardCards(). Monster rooms, Elite rooms, and Boss rooms all calculate probability differently with the getCardRarity(int roll) method but they all do the same thing with that result.

This vid is perfect on 1.5 speed. I really am in awe of how slow and controlled you can speak. I smoke 2 grams of weed a day and I still cant do that lmfao
Around 40:00 The right word for "consistency" is card advantage. At least that's how I learnt it. Even though the term advantage is dubious since the opponents doesn't play by the same rules as you. Card advantage is "Having stronger hands", which you achieve by: -: Drawing more -: Manipulating card -: Maximizing your card efficiency -: Weakening the opponent cards (or just the opponent in our case) Well laid plans fits perfectly the category 2, 3 and even 1 to some extent. I would dare put a card like Malaise in card advantage, since it mostly mitigates damage by making your block cards more powerful (or weakening the opponent if you prefer). Edit: I know YOU are perfectly aware of what card advantage is. I am just surprised you didn't name it here.
Small thing (that wouldn't have changed the outcome). In the stabbo book fight, you said that if you phantasmal + defense, then you would be 1 damage off with skewer + backstab. 4*40+11=171, however backstab would've also been doubled, so you would've had 182 damage instead. Could've saved you 5 HP. Overall, love the overexplained coming back!
It would have changed the outcome, but only by a tiny margin. 5 extra hp would mean that in the very last turn Tori would have gone off and he'd live with 4hp. Not that that's hugely game changing for this run, it still would have been tough to win the fight, but I love how these tiny things add up in StS.
Why you are making every decision your making on card selection is WHY we're here. I think you called ot the "Grand Plan" it's why you can kill to the end of nearly every run and unless I see a specific selectiom.of cards in a specific order I can't. So GREAT upload. Thank you for the peak behind the curtain. 10/10
In Act 1, Jorbs had two rests, sandwiching a shop and low enough health that he almost certainly needed a rest at about 1:30:00. I would've rested first, with the hope that I'd pick up a card that I would upgrade at the 2nd campfire, but Jorbs didn't even mention that possibility. Is that a bad idea? I also found it interesting that Jorbs didn't consider those relics to be good enough. I really like Ancient Tea Set, especially with the relics he had at that point (Bag of Preparation), Blood Vial provides something unique that Silent often lacks (healing), and I thought Jorbs considered Frozen Eye one of the best relics in the game?
Watching this now vs. Jorbs recent videos... I think he's burnt out on STS. He's so much more passionate in these older videos (and in Monster Train too) compared to the almost lethargic demeanor of his recent STS runs.
Worth mentioning about poison damage : in a poison-based deck, you can safely consider that an individual poison X card deals X damage each turn. Sure, a, say, poison 6 exhaust card in a deck with 0 poison damage deals "only" 21 damage over 6 turns. Consider playing two of these cards back-to-back, though. The first deals 21 in 6 turns, the 2nd deals 36 in 6 turns, then 21 in the next 6 turns. One of these cards is basically shouldering the dmg reduction from poison, and every subsequent poison X gets its X dmg per turn through. Another way to visualize poison is that, assuming your poison stacks never fall to 0, is that every card poison X deals X each turn forever, BUT when you first play a poison card, the enemy heals 1, then 2, then 3... each turn for the rest of the game. This process is independent of the number of poison cards you play. So... do you pick up that noxious fumes, or not? The card is simple. In a deck with other poison cards, it's 1 energy, deals 0 dmg, then 3, then 6 (9 total), then 9 (18 total), then 12 (30 total)... (& quite worse in a deck with no other poison cards) For example, crippling poison is 7, 7, 7, 7... but its single target, not AOE (then again, your objective is beating the heart...) Still, if the fight last 5 turns after you played the card, then it's **worse** against single enemies than crippling poison (and it's a power, which is arguably a **bad** thing when considering long fights, because you can't re-use it to scale even more.) 6 turns, and it's better (but marginally.) Honestly? I... don't think you take it, most of the times. I'd personally pick crippling poison over noxious fumes pretty much 100% of the time, way, way more flexible in my books. The only reason you'd want a noxious fumes imo is because your deck has the potential to stall fights over absurd length of times (hint hint : heart fight and stalling as silent...) or because you lack damage to make the fights go quick, and your deck was like skewer dagger spray x2 at the time (+ you couldn't pick the dodge & roll at the shop). Bad card to pick, I think. Could be wrong, tho!
it hits a lot of lategame enemies well; reptomancer, donu deca, time eater, ~awakened one, act 4 elites, and heart all interact with it more favorably than what you get by simplifying it like above. in particular the interactions it has with resummoning or cleansing, or with artifact charges, are both very important. i don't remember this run exactly but i'm pretty sure i was fighting automaton with very few ways to strip artifact, which means crippling cloud is probably going to cost two energy to strip two artifact charges and fumes is going to cost one energy to strip 2-3 and then deal some damage.
@@Jorbs Still feel like it's wayyy too slow to be used in anything that isn't a heavily defensive deck (or a deck that got lucky with its energy relics). It's a "1 energy, does nothing when you play it" card in A20... meh. Standalone and upgraded, it does 0, 3, 5, 7. 15 damage in 4 turns for 1 energy, blocked by artifact.. Upgraded dagger spray is 12 damage whenever you play it, scales with strength, etc. I honestly dont remember having any run where that card really was MVP in any way.
starting with a triple bird fight after a weak act 1 has ended my runs enough times that I tend to call it my number one run killer. I have to admit, you pretty well optimized what was a very very sucky run as far as cards and relics goes. I learned quite a bit.
I can't remember the order you got your cards but having more 0 cost attack cards would have been great. Energy goes towards defense / setup. Zero cost attacks for pin nib setup. Great video learned alot
He had solid damage though, and he had 4 energy but low card draw at the end which is a bad time for 0 energy cards because they don't make use of the extra energy, so they get in the way of cards that can take advantage of his 4 energy in his tiny 3 card hand. He just needed better mitigation cards like he mentioned, piercing scream and other cards like that could've saved the run just by dropping the damage of those multi-hit attacks way down. It could've saved him a lot of health in his book of stabbing fight which would've allowed him to survive hyper beam and then he could've probably managed to bring a lot of damage together with pen nib, phantasmal, and skewer. More attack was really never the issue
All Sneaky Strike is there is 0 energy to do 10 damage and advance Pen Nib by 1. So it's slightly better than Slice (as long as you never draw into it after dropping below 2 energy). Really, unless Sneaky Strike actually gaining you energy or working in an infinite deck, it's just another common attack.
that's exactly the point though, @@celestialspark5697. It will almost every time gain you 2 energy due to kite, that can be channeled into skewer! So, 10 dmg+ 20 skewer damage ends up being 30 dmg plus. And if the skewer is nib'd (which would happen more often with sneaky in the deck) that's 10 + 20 * 2 = 50 dmg extra. This is what's worth considering more.
@@astarothgr Sneaky Strike does not give you energy. It costs 2 to play, and you get it back if you discarded a card. The card literally just adds 10 damage to the turn. It only gains you energy if you double it with Necronomicon or lower the play cost.
@@celestialspark5697 You're ...right. I've had runs where sneaky strike would end up costing zero, but this was not one of them. As such, your assessment is correct, and I'm a fool. :D
1:11:52 There is a play which is better 50% of the time, which is strike, strike, neutralize gremlin wizard, set him to 10 and retain the skewer. If shield gremlin shield the wizard, skewer is exact lethal and you still take 5 damage, Else if the shield gremlin shield the mad gremlin, defend then skewer and take 0 damage. 50% chance to take 5 damage is strictly better than 100% chance to take 5 damage.
I picked this game up fairly recently and was struggling to figure out how to play Silent on even lower ascensions. This video has helped me so much, and I'm progressing slowly but surely through Silent Ascension levels. I still have a lot to learn, but this overexplained has done so much to help me learn how to learn, if that makes sense. Thank you Jorbs!
it's really important to know how to utilise all of silents cards, even the ones that seem bad because shes not like ironclad you need those synergies and combos.
upgrading neutralize is more than a doubling in power IMO, because the card space required to draw a 2nd neutralize is more impactful than the extra 2 damage from playing 2 unupgraded neutralizes vs 1 upgraded neutralize.
On the book of stabbing fight, I think you took the most likely line to win, but there might be some lines where you miss Skewer but are able to block a lot more on turn 2 where you could survive (esp. with block pot)? All depends on the draw of course, but your like was 5/13 chance. There might have been a more stable line.
Small shame you got so few events in 1st floor. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the more common events in floor 1 like the garbage disposal one where you pay life for a relic and the double upgrade for life.
My first thought when I saw the map was "ok let's look at the whale bonuses to see if I'm going elite hunting this game, because: 22:14 " I'm glad it got mentioned at all :P
sure, sort of. frontloaded has to happen in the first 2-3 turns or it doesn't really achieve its purpose though (compare backstab w/ innate to a high-damage attack which you might not be able to draw, for example). and scaling often gets stronger and stronger as a fight goes on instead of only staying the same - think about how poison can multiply with catalyst or how strength can get out of hand with multiple limit breaks.
never been much for the higher difficulty plays on slay the spire. but i was always interested in the exact power level of a lot of the defect cards, because their potential always seem to significantly outstrip their per fight utility.
I am currently grinding Ascension runs, and the character I have the most trouble with is the defect. It's really hard to pick the right cards, because cards that I think will do well just severely under perform in some fights and so far I haven't been able to nail down why. My first guess would be that the secondary resource management system the defect has (the orbs) has to align with what you're trying to do with your cards. And in fights where they don't, the relevant cards under perform.
I need overexplain defect a20 with heart... Currently most needed video xD... I had troubles with silent act1 always and its inevitable. But i think i can improve on defect with some overexplained information
In case you're thinking "Wow, this video is 3 hours, it must be so slow and boring", don't worry, he picks his first card BEFORE the 40 minute mark.
It doesn't even take him 2 hours to beat the Act 1 boss, why was I ever worried

If this was too long people just need to run your videos in 1.5 or 1.25 speed. But this made me subscribe for more content. Keep up the great work!
Gonna go into your more recent videos after this.
I don't think making *Consistency* the only title not in all caps was a joke but if so that's genius
I struggled for a long time to finish a run. After watching this video i played with these tips in mind and finished the run on the first try. But on lower ascensions.
Hey man, I never got the knack of the Silent but after watching this video I beat the Heart on my very next go, really useful stuff. Thanks
Exciting run and loved hearing the thought process. More, please!
god damn half an hour in and you haven't even started the first fight yet. Well at least your title's not clickbait
A third of the way through and hes still on floor 4
Fantastic video
Thank you for this content this was entertaining and informative at the same time. Hope to see more in the future!
Sometimes I just return to the overexplained runs and enjoy them with several cups of tea)
Not only entertaining, improved my own game incredibly!
Was looking forward to a 3h video ending in a heart kill. Instead I got more explanations than I bargained for and loved it until the end.
I really !dig this content
Dig! RELIC! Dig!
Discovered your channel 4/5 weeks ago. Boight a swich coz my old flatlate showed me slay the spire (and mario maker 2). Only have the remastered of FF7/8/9 and those games. But... The game I play often is slay the spire. I play too fast, you hrlped me to try to brink thinking process, and so, enjoy more the game. Thanks buddy
This vid is perfect on 1.5 speed. I really am in awe of how slow and controlled you can speak. I smoke 2 grams of weed a day and I still cant do that lmfao
haha, good to know dude
@JoINrbs Yes, boss rewards reset the rare chance to default. Great vid!
Around 40:00
The right word for "consistency" is card advantage. At least that's how I learnt it. Even though the term advantage is dubious since the opponents doesn't play by the same rules as you.
Card advantage is "Having stronger hands", which you achieve by:
-: Drawing more
-: Manipulating card
-: Maximizing your card efficiency
-: Weakening the opponent cards (or just the opponent in our case)
Well laid plans fits perfectly the category 2, 3 and even 1 to some extent.
Yup!
Interestingly, resetting the store at around 2:20:00 changed the potions and allowed to buy the energy potion
1:15:00 is that a snake eating an elephant ?
Why you are making every decision your making on card selection is WHY we're here. I think you called ot the "Grand Plan" it's why you can kill to the end of nearly every run and unless I see a specific selectiom.of cards in a specific order I can't. So GREAT upload. Thank you for the peak behind the curtain. 10/10
I know this is really old, but, if you hover over the thing you're talking about when you're talking about it, it really helps!
It occurs to me after some research that the production value on the channel has skyrocketed since this video came out...
Im really watching this 3 hour video of tactics and minmaxing when i cant even be arsed to put up defend to prevent 1 dmg
With this much thought and energy, you could prob be one of the first astronauts on Mars.
that sounds awful lol
Skill potion is my favorite emergency button.
I really like Ancient Tea Set, especially with the relics he had at that point (Bag of Preparation), Blood Vial provides something unique that Silent often lacks (healing), and I thought Jorbs considered Frozen Eye one of the best relics in the game?
your explanation at 1:17 of prepared made me feel so stupid for not realizing that
Waiting for you youtube, you can do it, you can do better than 360p. I believe in you youtube...
Watching this now vs. Jorbs recent videos... I think he's burnt out on STS. He's so much more passionate in these older videos (and in Monster Train too) compared to the almost lethargic demeanor of his recent STS runs.
it's an enjoyable game but 5 hours a day 7 days a week for years has gotta take its toll, man
Worth mentioning about poison damage : in a poison-based deck, you can safely consider that an individual poison X card deals X damage each turn.
(& quite worse in a deck with no other poison cards)
For example, crippling poison is 7, 7, 7, 7... but its single target, not AOE (then again, your objective is beating the heart...)
Still, if the fight last 5 turns after you played the card, then it's **worse** against single enemies than crippling poison (and it's a power, which is arguably a **bad** thing when considering long fights, because you can't re-use it to scale even more.)
6 turns, and it's better (but marginally.)
Honestly? I... don't think you take it, most of the times.
@Jorbs, has your opinion on hovering kite and well-laid plans changed at all since recent updates have changed their rules?
Love this type of video
Thanks for posting this!
This'll be a testament to my lacking patience and help me increase it
at 2.16, there's something to be said about kite + sneaky strike + well laid plans + skewer combo. I'd value sneaky strike there higher than that.
At 2:49:24 turn, why Skewer and not Spray? Spray deals 24 to all for 1 energy, if I am not mistaken.
1:11:52 There is a play which is better 50% of the time, which is strike, strike, neutralize gremlin wizard, set him to 10 and retain the skewer.
If shield gremlin shield the wizard,
skewer is exact lethal and you still take 5 damage,
Else if the shield gremlin shield the mad gremlin,
defend then skewer and take 0 damage.
2:50:07 dagger spray, neutralize on angry, 3 block ?
A 3 hour video about a lost run. Not only did you make a great video but you also borked RUclips's metrics - Great stuff !!
Thank you for your effort
Don't worry guys, he removes the spreadsheet after 2 fights... all good
Small shame you got so few events in 1st floor. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the more common events in floor 1 like the garbage disposal one where you pay life for a relic and the double upgrade for life.
I really need a defect overexplain video, its the only class I haven't beat on a20 heart :(
This is a great educational video
I just bought the game and this is a super informative video for me
My first thought when I saw the map was "ok let's look at the whale bonuses to see if I'm going elite hunting this game, because: 22:14 "
I'm glad it got mentioned at all :P
Cool video. I too have recently come into a Slay the Spire addiction.
“Posted 57 seconds ago” well nice :) 3 hours of my day gone
The number of runs I've lost to hyper beam....feelsbadman. Great video, though! Your analysis vids have got me through A8, and I'm still climbing!
Is frontloaded like burst damage vs scaling being like sustained damage?
sure, sort of. frontloaded has to happen in the first 2-3 turns or it doesn't really achieve its purpose though (compare backstab w/ innate to a high-damage attack which you might not be able to draw, for example). and scaling often gets stronger and stronger as a fight goes on instead of only staying the same - think about how poison can multiply with catalyst or how strength can get out of hand with multiple limit breaks.
So the strategy of shivs is just bad vs heart? Or can it still be visible if you also have a lot of block?
never been much for the higher difficulty plays on slay the spire. but i was always interested in the exact power level of a lot of the defect cards, because their potential always seem to significantly outstrip their per fight utility.
And in fights where they don't, the relevant cards under perform.
one of the most cursed runs I've ever seen
Spreadsheet link doesn't work anymore?
I need overexplain defect a20 with heart... Currently most needed video xD... I had troubles with silent act1 always and its inevitable. But i think i can improve on defect with some overexplained information
