Fujinon 90mm F2.0 and 33mm f1.4?
I was only going for lenses that I've actually used. Those are still on my list to try! Plus I find the 90mm too telephoto for my portrait work. I do use a 35mm f/1.4 for portraits, but it does give some distortion when you get too close.
Another great video Pete. Glad the Viltrox made no1. On my list for 2024👍
Thank you Gary! You will love it for sure!
I agree with this list, I have sold my 35mm 1.4 and 56mm 1.2(old) to get the viltrox 75 and 27 1.2 lenses
Enjoy!
I actually replaced 16-55 f/2.8 to 16-80 f/4 + 90mm f/2. 16-80mm got amazing range for daily use or travel as well amazing OIS up to 6 stops, that works amazing with IBS in my X-H1.
Ah this is a great setup too!
My all around portrait lens is the 35mm f1.4. Even if I own the 56 1.2 wr, the 35 1.4 is still in my hearth for the overall image quality, especially the atmosphere in the image it is able to render, and its size, that allows me to use easily also on my x-e4 in addition to the x-t5. In my opinion it should be on the podium.
I use the 35mm f/1.4 original all the time and LOVE it but for this list I was sticking to more standard portrait focal lengths.
Super helpful list. I'm jumping back to Fuji after quite a while away the 3rd party support was a big surprise. I shoot the Vitrox 56mm 1.4 on Canon M, and that lens for the price is shockingly good. Not as sharp as the Sigma 56mm, but it very sharp in the center and the bokeh is less nervous. Shots have great character. Thanks for the video. Subbed
Thank you! Appreciate the sub
Came here to see your opinion on the Sigma 56 and left with a confirmation that the Viltrox 75 is one of my next lenses.
It's really good!
When I select my top Fuji head & shoulder portrait lenses based on image quality, focusing features, durability, reliability, ergonomics, and price, I come up with:
56mm f/1.2 Fujinon
55mm f/3.5 Nikon macro (with adapter)
90mm f/2 Leica Summicron (with adapter)
105mm f/2.8 Nikon macro (with adapter)
50-140mm f/2.8 Fujinon
135mm f/2 Zeiss APO Sonnar ZF 2 (with adapter)
Good list! The 56mm 1.2 Fuji would be perfect if it had better/quieter AF performance.
The Sigma 18-50 is a serious sleeper how good that lens is. As you said, hard to take off. I am using it a ton more than I planned on. One of my recent posts, the couples shoot I used that lens 90% of the time as the versatility was fantastic!!!
Agreed, Mike. I was blown away by the 18-50 Sigma when I tested it out!
It's my main event lens now, along with the Fuji 50-140mm. The size difference between those two is comical. The little Sigma zoom is crazy good with constant f2.8 that compact.
Sigma 18-50 is a great tool but not close to 56 mm W.R 1.2 . Both lenses are designed for different purposes as Sigma is multi- zoom lens and 56 mm .1.2 is low light portrait performer .
No love for the 50-140 f/2.8? I love longer lenses for portraits.
I absolutely LOVE the 50-140mm, but I was focusing on compact lenses that are more budget friendly.
@@PeteCocoPhoto Aha, that makes sense. Cheers!
I own the 2 Sigmas and the Viltrox 75mm. I'm really impressed by all of them. The tiny size of the Sigma 18-50mm at constant f2.8 is nuts. Some of my favorite images have come through the Viltrox 75mm this year.
Yeah there's a lot to love with all of them.
My go to lens is the 16-55. Your list is right on target. It would be interesting if Viltrox made a zoom lens.
Agreed!
Thanks for the video! Always fun to watch
Glad you enjoyed it, Elijah!
Woah, great video. Thanks Pete!
Thank you, Marcus!
You rock buddy I appreciate you
Thank you!
Here's a question for you, Pete... I'm a hobby photographer, but photography gigs made me more money than my full-time job last year, and I had much more fun doing so. I've been shooting with 2 canon R6 II, and the monster heavy lenses that come with them. 85, 70-200, on and on. I've decided to try the XT5. I'm intrigued by the size and the idea of shooting jpeg with the film simulations. What 2 lenses would you recommend I start with? I'd like to do travel photography and possibly even portrait photography. I'm not looking to replace my canons. But I tend to shoot less for fun with these cameras since they are so big. Sorry for the long message.
Hey, so first - kudos on turning your passion into a profitable business! That's just so awesome. A couple of things, first, remember that the XT5 isn't going to give you the same AF and performance speed as the R6, so just be prepared for that LOL. My go to all around lens is the 16-55 2.8. It's fast, sharp, and the range is great for so many things. I also love the 50-140 2.8 and those two as a combination would definitely cover most of your range. There are also a bunch of awesome fast primes in the Fuji ecosystem, so it really just depends on what kind of shooting you are going to do. Having at least 1 small lens will make you really appreciate the beauty of the compact system esp when compared to the larger Canon stuff. Hope this helps!
@PeteCocoPhoto Thanks Pete! Yeah, I'm aware of the step down in performance. I'm ok with that. I'm really happy with the income photography has gotten me. But because of it, my cameras have become a tool more than a recreational device. If that makes sense. I think picking up the xt5 will encourage me to do it for fun. Learn a camera again. And having a smaller camera won't feel like such a task to just pull out and snap a few pictures for fun. The 16-55 is on my cross hair. So is the 56 1.2. I just didn't want to say that up front cause I wanted to see what your recommendation would be. Thanks for the advice! Love your channel. I'll keep watching your content.
@@ivangarcia831 thanks Ivan I appreciate this so much! Fuji will definitely inspire you're creative juices. This is why I love it too. Plus an X-T5 is easy to carry along that I find myself taking it everywhere.
If 75mm is on the upper range of acceptable "portrait" focal length, which focal length do you prefer to use on a regular basis? I am more into landscapes and wildlife and I'm considering one lens for indoor family images. I need something fairly wide because I'm usually in close quarters with a large group of people. I've been using the 16-80 for this but I'm starting to think I missed the boat by opting for the 16-80 instead of the 16-55 when I bought my XT-5.
I like my portrait lenses between 50-95mm (speaking in full frame terms). So, the 16-55mm is one of my go to lenses, as well as the 35mm. I just picked up the 50mm f/1 Fuji lens and have been experimenting with that as well. The main advantage of the 16-55 is that it's faster, but the 16-80 offers excellent image quality. If you are shooting groups and portraits at the same event the zoom really is the way to go.
Thanks, I really enjoy your videos!!
@@DwayneEdwards-x4x thank you!!
56 mm WR -tested on XT-5 and XS 20 . I have found that both cameras performed extremely well in the following :
-Sharpness
-Autofocus
-Colours
Downside its a big lens but if you're looking for great bokeh with sharp colours its a great lens . 8/10
After coming back from a recent trip the sigma 18-50 calls to me 🤔 thanks for your thoughts!
Have fun!
I have a Fujifilm XC 15-45. Its compact, has power zoom I am not fan of, and produces decent images along with my Fujifilm XE4. Can someone suggest if this Sigma will have better images quality than XC 15-45, specially given the fact that Sigma doesn't have Vibration reduction and is less wider compared to Fuji ?
I haven't tried that particular lens but I can tell you the Sigma is very good. The Sigma is much faster at f/1.4 which will make a big difference in quality and low light performance as well.
I love the xf 50mm 1.0 and the xf 50-140mm
I am yet to try the 50 1.0 but I spent a few weeks with the 50-140 and it's amazing for sure.
Great "unscientific", use-based review.. Have a great week Pete!
Thanks Charlie, you too!
I have the Viltrox 75 mm f1.2 and the Sigma 56 1.4. Each in their way very good lenses.
They render colours differently though both are sharp and have very good optical performance overall.
I get the impression that 3rd party support for Fuji is growing fast and that can only help sustain and build up the platform.
I agree - more choices in lenses are a plus for all involved.
Which one you prefer a bit more? Right now in my area the price difference between them is almost 200 USD (Sigma is cheaper) but anyway I'm more towards Viltrox 75mm f1.2. I need something a little better for portraits and I'm looking for something slightly longer than standard (I own Fujinon 50mm f2 WR and manual Helios 58mm f2).
@@tycjanjakubczyk I would go w the Viltrox
@@PeteCocoPhoto thank you for a reply! So instead of buying Sigmas set 16mm and 56mm I’m gonna add a bit more $$$ for a Viltrox combo 13mm and 75mm. Should be more unique because even focal lengths are a bit more unusual. Thanks a lot :)
@@tycjanjakubczyk My pleasure! You will love both of those lenses!
try 90mm f/2 and put it to the "beyond anything" place :) nice review BTW.
Thanks!
Fuji's 90mm f/2 deserves an honorable mention.
I only mentioned lenses I've used myself and I have not tried the 90mm yet although I hear it's amazing! Also, 135mm equiv is not my preferred portrait range as I find I need to move too far from my subject (I know it's a 135mm and what I'm saying is sacrilege haha).
@PeteCocoPhoto This lens is excellent for sports and dance in the theater at closer distances, though..
Honorable mention??? The 90 should be #1 and everything else an honorable mention lol
@@stanobert3475 my list was focusing on portraits. I only have love for the 90mm lol!
Count me as another vote for the 90mm - it’s a gem and a beautiful portrait lens if the working distance works for you
If the 75mm 1.2 by viltrox is so good!
Hi there how about the 90 and 80 Fuji for candid which will you buy ?
Neither as I feel that focal length is too telelphoto for candids and every day portraits (135mm FF equiv for the 90mm). I would suggest something in a shorter range.
@@PeteCocoPhoto like which one ?
@@PeteCocoPhoto for weddings candid
@@hamzatatta952 I like the 56mm f/1.2
@@PeteCocoPhoto is that long enough for candid
Which camera/lens combo are you using to record this video?
Canon R5 & 50mm EF 1.4
Thanks for your always informative video. I personally like small and light, so I have sold off my big 16-55 and bought the Sigma 18-50. In the same small and light category ,I've purchased the Samyang 75 f 1.8 over the Viltrox. No regrets at all.
Thanks for watching! I haven't tried the Samyang - very interesting!
Personally, as an owner of this lens, the 75 is rather overrated IMO.
Compared to the 16-55 on the list but especially compared to the 90, the AF can really struggle with lower contrast scenes. The AF is comparable to the 56 1.2 LM WR, maybe it has the nose, but not much in it. For posed portraits you won't notice its stuttering but for candids, documentary, it can struggle to keep up at times. Not always, but it will creep up and surprise you and sometimes not just struggle but zoom all the way back out and in or just refuse. Not one for critical moments.
Also the 90 is much better in the IQ department. The 75 can be great, but the flare and ghosting can often intrude a lot, even with the hood on. That can't be missed when comparing to the 90, which has none of this, is marginally sharper, edge to edge much more consistent. But maybe too perfect? I like the swirliness of the boke of the 75, but don't want it all the time, nor those eliptical bokeh balls. The 90 for sure is not always the most practical focal length - where I used the 75 today in church, the 90 would have been too long - but the 90 is a lens that is just a joy to use, excelling also as an all rounder short-medium tele, a great option for sports, travel, candids, street as well as portraits. The 75 is my character lens and for when the 90 is a bit too long. However I reach for the Samyang 75 more often than the Viltrox 75. In low light at f1.8 it exposes like the Viltrox does at f1.4 - brighter t-stop I guess. A secret weapon for low light with better AF, no vignette at all and weighing 1/3 of the Viltrox 75. Bokeh could be a bit better though.
Although i sold the sigma 18-50 as there was a lot that bugged me about the lens from handling to IQ under certain uses, no doubt it was a good portrait option...if a bit short for me heing a 2.8. But as with the Sigma 56 1.4, the lack of aperture ring puts me off. Might still replace the Sigma 75 1.8 with the 56 1.4 though.
Would be interesting when referencing older lenses to include used prices, as this is a major advantage. Yes the 16-55 is expensive new, but mine cost me less than I sold my Sigma 18-50 for. The 90 used is less than a used 75 1.2 also. And will hold that value.
You should also check out the viltrox 27 1.2 if you can!
Great points, thank you!
What about the XF 35mm f2 WR?
I was only comparing portrait lengths for this particular vid
Why you didn’t include samples of photos made with these lenses?
I just didn't lol. It was an end of year countdown not a full review of each lens. However if you check out my channel there are reviews of all of them in there if not images from all of them.
I like the 27mm 1.2 even more than the Viltrox 75mm.
Really nice “standard” prime.
I love that lens. I used it for some of my favorite location portraits and documented it here: ruclips.net/video/1nvGT_sIATA/видео.html
I'm really in doubt about a Sigma 56mm 1.4 for 320€ or the Fuji 56mm 1.2 for 900€.
The Fuji is much better in terms of image quality, but the AF is pretty slow.
I have 3 lenses in the list. Took thousands of photo with XF35 F1.4 over past 8 years. Also own Sigma 18-50, old XF56 and XF16-55. But my go-to lens now is switched to Viltrox 27mm F1.2 :)
Cool!
Viltrox 27 lives on my camera
How the fuck do you succesfully tether with godox triggers?
I need to know, I have issues with freezing cameras, lost connections, dramas all around.
I am about to jump ship, but I love.fuji
In the flash menu setting on the Fuji, you need to enable the setting to use off-camera flash. Then the trigger will fire. I use Godox flashes with a trigger and have no issues.
@@PeteCocoPhoto also, no issues with off camera flash, only when i tether
@@slglasius I don't have any issues tethering w capture one using godox off camera flash. Maybe it's a Lightroom thing?
Thanks for your replies btw
I am using capture one on mac m1
icw godox triggers, off camera flash, xt3's, tether tools cable.
Usually the first couple of shots are ok,
that either
1. the camera freezes, and i have to remove the battery/ disconnect the trigger.
2. The connection between C1 and the camera is lost and new shots are not transferred to the mac.
Just got my xt5, still needing to try this, but I had multiple xt3's and 4's and they all had the same issues.
Found some conversations online about fuji not playing nice with godox triggers, so either get another camera of go with pro-foto or trigger godox lights in another way.

Contrast>sharpness in my years of editing images.
So true!
@@PeteCocoPhoto indeed. Nice video.
@@artphototech thanks!
Loud lenses like the 56/1.2 WR drive me crazy. Completely unacceptable at this price point. The 16-55/2.8 is quite sterile.
Fujifilm needs a stellar lens like Nikons Plena in the range 40-80mm. The 50/1.0 is more a marketing tool to get attention for the XF system.
The sound doesn't bother me so much as long as it focuses properly lol
@@PeteCocoPhoto AF isn't really fast ...
When shooting durin a wedding or conference, it's realyy annoying and disturbing, when everybody within 2-3 meters can hear the AF motor. No silent shooting possible. Not acceptable at this price point.
No problem with the Viltrox 75/1.2.
No way the Viltrox is better than the 56mm, even with the slow autofocus. The 56mm is sharper, smaller and better colors. Also Viltrox was to tight for me.
I agree mostly with you but the AF is a huge negative to the FUji 56mm.
I get good results with AFS and face detect off.@@PeteCocoPhoto
