The Gold Standard of Shock Absorbers for Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator - OHLINS

- When it comes to shock absorbers, everyone's got an opinion as to what's best but if there's one brand that I've found to have the most enthusiastic and loyal fanbase and all around the world, it'd be Ohlins. For over 40 years, this Swedish company has been an industry leader in dampening technology for motocross, rally racing, open wheel racing, mountain bikes, high performance vehicles of all makes and models and now, they're making their highly sought after gold shocks for the Jeep JL Wrangler, JK Wrangler and JT Gladiator. And, as luck would have it, Cindy and I were given a set for our 392 Rubicon and for the purposes of testing and review. Needless to say, this video will give you a closer look at what some consider to be the gold standard of shocks and to show you what it takes to get them installed.
You can see more pics of these Ohlins shocks installed our 392 as well as all the mods we've done to date here: www.wayalife.c...

“I love GOOOOLD”! -Goldmember
I am glad to see Ohlins making itself known to the Jeep world !!! I own a Cannondale Mountain Bike along with my Brother and we ride and we've had every name shock manufacturer that's built for Mountain Bikes Ohlins are hands down the industry best shocks whether it is for a Jeep or Subaru or Motorcycles and Bikes. Pricey YES but they are well worth it !!!
It really is good to see Ohlins getting involved in the Jeep world and yes, pricey but you do get what you pay for.
You have some of the best video editing and instructional views that is out there anywhere. Great video! Bravo.
Happy to hear you enjoyed our video 😎
Nice installation video Eddie. They look really nice and I hope they preform well for you also. Stay safe.
Glad you enjoyed the video and I hope to share our testing with you soon.
Another great video Eddie, I fitted a set to my wife's JL eco D almost a year ago, they are superb and still look like new which is fantastic for anything in Europe. You are part of a very elite crew , there's not many sets of these around :)
Your videos are awesome. You cover what I’m looking for as well as topics I didn’t even know I should be looking for.
LOL - happy to hear you enjoy our videos and that you find them to be informative 😎
This will be a fun series. I’ve never heard of this manufacturer so it’ll be interesting to see how they work. That gold looks pretty sweet on that 392… bonus. 👍
Glad to hear you're interested in these things. And yes, I think they look good on a 392 too 😁
AWESOME SHOCKS, got them on my quads!
Every jeep y’all own is a dream build
Thank you!
Reminds me of Mx days. Quality for sure. Good person to put them to the test
Thank you, we really appreciate you saying as much and hope to share what we find as soon as we can 😎
Been running Ohlins on my motorcycle for years. They are awesome shocks. Thinking you might just love them.
Not gonna lie, so far so good. Need to put them through real testing but I think you're right in that I might just love them.
@@wayalife Such a difference on my motorcycle. Very noticeable.
Another good one thanks. Oh and I got my cb bar turned out great you did an awesome job on the design.
Awesome! So happy to hear you enjoyed the video and that you like our CB BAR.
You really put alot of work into your content and camera shots, and it shows. I will be looking for the reviews.
We really appreciate you saying as much and glad that you enjoy our videos.
I had Ohlins Shocks on my 72 H2 as well as my 82 Maico 490. Ohlins been around for over 70 years. Just a little longer than me. LOL
Back in the day, when I was a younger man, like 45 years ago, we put Ohlin shocks on our 250 RM Moto Cross Bikes and really exceeded. I'm surprised they aren't as popular as their performance, but I guess that's in the marketing. Eddie, you're going to love them.
That's awesome and so far, I love them 👍
They look legit! never heard of this company before! Thanks for sharing :)
Glad we could introduce them to you and hope to show you more soon.
Ohlins is a big name in the motorcycle world. If you are not into bikes then no reason to be embarrassed. They are outstanding quality. Also a very small company. Valving and rebuilds are very dependent on the US importer for parts. Not many shops work on these. Parts availability is hit and miss.
I appreciate you saying as much and so far, these shocks seem like the real deal.
Such a thorough guy, ill have to look you up next time im in Winnemucca.
Actually, we're in Carson City but Winnemucca is really nice too :)
Your a bloody legend mate. Nobody knows what ohlins is haha. The 392 looks much better now it has real wheels.
LOL - happy to hear you like what you see and thanks! 😁
Seems like a simple nonintrusive solution. Looking forward to seeing how you like them. 👍🏻 Man, I love the sound of that Jeep! Yep, want it!
LOL - hope to get some testing videos up soon.
Now this all makes sense! I’d love to try a set of Öhlins on my JT.
these are literally the peak of shock quality
Short of going full coilover, I'd have to agree. They really do seem to be well thought out and designed.
OHLINS have been in sports cars for years, the BEST Crossover Shocks!!!
Glad to hear you're a fan of Ohlins. So far, they really do seem to be exceptional.
I would like to see two bolts to hold the front reservoir bracket to the frame. Maybe just me. Looks like quality shocks. Thanks for the video!
Nothing a drill and another bolt and nut can't fix 😎
Ohlins is the gold standard. waiting on next video.
Another Great Video Eddie always makes things look so easy to do. if you don't learn how to do it yourself after watching his videos , you must be blind. Nice job, thanks Eddie👍
LOL - you're too kind and happy to hear you find that our videos are helpful.
Wow! Seen them on mountain bikes & Volvo’s had no idea they were into Jeeps. Great video!
Glad you enjoyed seeing this :)
Nice job, Eddie and Cindy. Looks good. OIIIIIIIO😎👍
Thank you :)
Great video. When I worked as a tech for Ducati they sent me to the Ohlins factory for training. Amazing place to say the least. I can imagine what 4 of these cost. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have electronic versions of these now as they do for bikes. Now I want a set for my build. Btw, I sort of cringed when you had them on the metal table. Lay down a blanket! 😂😊
🤣 I suppose they really are that nice
Discount code would be nice! I've had Ohlins on a Subaru track/autox car and on every sportbike I've ever owned. Love the quality!
Can’t wait to see you out on the trail with them
Awesome! Hope to bring you videos of it soon.
Loved Ohlins on my motorcycles. They are the gold standard. Interested to know price point and how they do with both low speed and high speed compression. I’m surprised they don’t give you the high speed compression adjustability for big hits, which is something you would encounter often wheeling. Looking forward to your review out on the trails
I won't lie, I was kind of surprised that there wasn't a high speed adjustment on these but happy to see they have a rebound one. Hoping to put these to the test soon and at higher speeds as that's how we like to play.
I have run them on superbikes for decades. Good stuff.
You guys Rock!
Hope all is well with you and your family - and more pupper footage please!
We appreciate it and will try to get more footage of Ripley in the future 😎
I'm always watching it well! Thank you.
Glad to hear it and glad you enjoyed this video.
I have ohlins on my road glide special, front cartridge big bear 32mm kit and the hd044 rears, ohlins are the best suspension money can buy. They’re gonna make that Jeep handle n ride like a trophy truck. They make my Harley feel like a super bike or king of the baggers contender. Can’t wait for your test review 🤙
Awesome! Looking forward to putting them to the test.
Excellent video, good info in a concise matter that consumers con use.
Happy to hear you enjoyed our video and the information presented 😎
Sweet! I ran Ohlins I my 911. Very nice!! I'll be interested in you take on their offroad stuff.
Very cool. Hope to report back soon.
I bet those would look amazing on my Sarge Green Willys!
LOL - honestly, I think they'd look great on any Jeep but yeah, on Sarge Green, they would look sweet.
Nice...looking forward to the road & trail tests...
Thanks! Hoping to bring that to you soon.
Had a lot of experience with Ohlins in the motorcycle world as they were the best. Saw their both last year at the GSJI and talked to them a bit. Not willing to buy them for my JLURD but I would try a set if they wanted to send them my way!!😃
this guy makes everything so easy to do it’s unbelievable 😂😅
LOL - humbled that you would say as much but really, these were that easy to install 😎
have this on my e30 and love them
I am looking forward to the review! I grew up around Ohlins on motorcycle and some race cars. They are the pinnacle of suspense technology. I I knew nothing about the off-road brands when I switched from the tuner world to my JT. I am really looking forward to seeing what you have to say about them.
Hope to bring you our review soon.
Thank you for another awesome video!
Happy to hear you enjoyed it.
Ohlins is the undisputed authority worldwide for any and all suspension.
Yup, that's why they're the gold standard 👍
OMG those are beautiful. I would love to run those on my 392. Very nice sir 🙌🏻
Glad you like what you see. Hoping to put them to the test soon!
Top Tier shocks
It really is.
Another GREAT video! 👊😎
Happy to hear you enjoyed it 😎
Wow, animated instructions. 😁 👍
LOL - glad you enjoyed it :)
I wouldn’t have known they made these for JK’s if not for this video 👍 I’m thinking they would be up there with Kings for that money 💰
Glad we could share this with you and yes, these do appear to be something to give King a run for their money.
Look great. Will def have to look into price point va competitors. I do have to say, the adjustment on the bottom seems a little annoying having to use an Allen. Wonder how they do vs a Falcon or a King. Falcon adjustment seems a little easier but I guess I don’t know if those only do compression or comp and rebound. Great vid, look forwards to the review.
Again, that lower adjustment is for rebound and to the best of my knowledge, this is something that is NOT offered on Falcon or Fox and even Kings or at least, not unless you get their triple bypass shocks and they come with their own set of clearance issues. Trust me, I run them on my other rigs. Also, the adjuster needs to be small and out of the way to prevent potential damage from rocks.
I'll say it again - BEST UNBOXING ON THE PLANET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL - we appreciate you saying as much 😁
@@wayalife The Gold Standard of UNBOXING!!!! 😆
I haven't seen you 2 in a long time . Those look fairly easy to install.
It's been about 3 weeks. Had a lot going on and summer is always hard being that we like to get out with friends. We'll try to stay on top of it though :)
My Jeep would look nice with those
Great video as always
Glad you enjoyed it 😎
Ohlins makes top of the line shocks for motorcycless in the raci g gsme. And steering stabilizers. They are super expensive. Comes atock on ducati though
Perfect color, size for 392
Glad you like what you see :)
Awesome thanks
Glad you liked it :)
First I’ve heard of them too
LOL - glad I'm not the only one 😁
well played sir🍻
Glad you liked what you saw :)
I always ran ohlins forks and dampener on my street bikes.
I hope they work as good as they look. All the best brother.
Need to test them out off road but so far, they're really really nice.
Good video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it 😎
Good looking shocks. Interested in finding out how they compare to Falcon 3.3's.
Well, I've never tested out a set of Falcon so I wouldn't be able to tell you for sure but I will share what I can and based on all the other shocks I've run in the past and as soon as I can.
Cool....
I like the title! You need 2oz of gold to buy these.
Another great video guys 👍,im curious tho why you haven't upgraded the brakes ,iv done the powerstops drilled and slotted roters and pads on my Rubicon, running 37's and love them zero complaints, the factory brakes just dont cut it and as we know braking is just as importantant in jeep'n,keep up the great work guys 👍
Maybe it's just me but I find that my factory brakes work great. Way better than my old JK. If I really felt a need to upgrade them, I would. But then, that's just me.
Great 🇺🇸 as always 🇺🇸 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
In the import world if you got Ohlins.... balling lol
LOL - these really are the real deal. We love them.
Cool, wish there more current in-cabin adjustment options out there. I think Teraflex is the only one.
From experience, I can tell you that it really isn't necessary. Once you find a sweet spot for how you'd like your Jeep to ride, making additional adjustments on a shock, just isn't needed.
I have ohlins on my Yamaha r1 and my Mazda rx8 the best EVER
Glad to hear you love your Ohlins!
What does it cost for the R1 $1400 somewhere around there?
Those look expensive.
They aren't exactly cheap, that's for sure.
$4000
@@TheFlyingPLiner Figured. A nice set like that from Fox or King are in that range as well.
@Zboegt I don't have any experience with them on jeeps but I do have a set on my golf r and they're a really nice setup if a bit overkill for a streetcar. Hindsight 20/20 I probably would go back to spending 1/3 of the money for bilstein or kw for 85% of the performance. .02
@@TheFlyingPLiner Yeah at this price point you really are getting the "gold plated" option that is way past the point of diminishing returns. Unless you really are on a race circuit and then it is what it is.
Nice😎😎
Great video. We’re getting ready to install these on our Gladiator . Where did you find that recommended setting for 10 or so clicks? How do you feel about that still?
I got that information from Ohlins and I still find it to be best for me.
👌
Your videos are great. Question for you; I did the 2.5" lift on my JT then added a nice bumper and winch which gave me a more rake then I want. A leveling kit on top of the front springs seems kinda iffy. I'm thinking of buying some 4 inch springs for the front and sticking with the 2.5 for the rear. Any suggestions from your experience? Thanks!
From what I have seen, most lift coils provide MORE lift than what is advertised. As in, you might end up with a Jeep that is sitting ass low by doing this. Typically, a front end will sag about 1" after the installation of a heavy bumper and winch and adding 1" coil spacers IS the best solution to fix this. It's what I've done for years on multiple Jeeps and if there's actually something "iffy" about it, that would be news to me.
Ohlins sponsored me in the late 80 and early 90 when i was racing enduros, they really are the finest made, but my real takeaway is Eddie really hates packaging
LOL
Damnit.. they look amazing but didn't hear they have a CJ option.. still building my 79.. but at 4k, I can probably go with a clifford performance upgrade instead for now.. lol
Wauu!
First Eddie great video as always , thank you . Second did it seem to you as it looked like in the video, that the top bushings in the rear anyway for sure looked really loose like the shock moved alot more freely than is what considered ideal ?
It allowed for a lot of rotational movement but isn't a problem. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Niiice
I love these shocks. Right now I have rock shocks. How much do these travel for rock crawling vs off roading?
About the same as any shock made for 4"-5" of travel.
Always great video no need for an OF account 😅
Happy to hear you enjoy our videos 😎
Does the cost out way the difference? Is the difference that substantial? Looks great.
Well, I guess that all depends on who you are and what you're wanting out of your shocks. I hope to show some testing results soon.
I’m guessing that would have to be a choice between accuair suspension and this one. When you make the video for the review could you elaborate on the difference between both. Thank!
ACCUAIR is a complete suspension system and one that gives you a lot of options. These are just shocks and and designed to give you an optimal ride with the 2"-3" or 3.5"-5" suspension system that you already have installed.
Will the rear remote reservoirs at the back, not get heat from the exhaust pipe? The pipe run looks close to the reservoirs, it might get hot if the car stand still, say for a long time at a traffic light.
I have not found it to be a problem, even after driving hard and fast in triple digit heat out in the Nevada desert ruclips.net/video/j6zjQNlNMo8/видео.html
Do you think they will work well with my AEV heavy springs (blue ones).
Would I be better off changing to 3.5” Teraflex springs as well?
AEV springs tend to be stiff as they are designed to hold up a lot of weight. TeraFlex coils typically are stiff as well. These shocks are designed to work best with standard coils which are softer. Also, the shocks we got were made for 3.5"-4.5" of lift.
Very cool, but the "10 clicks" or "20 clicks" is dumb. They need to get a better way to adjust these with actual visual numbers. We are not all pro set up people. TF Falcon shocks have this, and I would not put them on the same level as Ohlins in the shock space.
Anyhow another great video!
To be fair, unlike Falcon's that only have a handful of big adjustments you can make, these Ohlins offers a ton of fine tuned adjustments, hence, the 10, 20, 30 or even more click. At that range, there's only so many numbers you can put on a knob for you to see. Also, the Falcon's do not come with rebound adjustments and due to it's location, I don't think you'd want a big knob there that could easily get knocked off by a rock. But, I get your point.
@@wayalife Fair point. These shocks are very nice. V2 I bet they refine the adjustment knobs. Maybe they can make a tool that has a plate with a through hole, and tic marks, and the tool its self has a finger on it that when you rotate it aligns with the tics on the plate. Kind of like an old analog torque wrench.
Rambler you kinda hit the point. These are pro level stuff...
I noticed that you don’t have your forward positioned compressor chuck mounted now
I was watching your OHLINS shock install and wondered if the reservoir will still fit with chuck mounted forward
We installed this on our 392. Our JT still has the forward mounting chuck. I do have a new breather relocation bracket and air chuck mount coming out soon. You can see it here: www.wayalife.com/threads/acm-breather-relocation-air-chuck-bracket-coming-soon.66307/
As far as easy adjustment to comparable shocks on the market I’d give those a 3-4
Once you have your shocks dialed in to how you prefer your ride to be, you really shouldn't need to make future adjustments.
👍
They make good stuff for sure. A bit out of my price range though.
They definitely aren't cheap.
@@wayalife I got the rocksports when I did my metalcloak lift. I think I will be replacing those with the adjustable falcon shocks soon.
HI EDDIE 👋
THE FIRST DIFFERENCE BESIDES THE COLOR WAS THE ADDED STONE GUARD . HAVEN'T SEEN OR HEARD THE OTHER MODELS EVER DOING / HAVING IT FOR THEIRS ? DOES THAT REALLY HELP / MATTER ? PLUS THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I'VE HEARD OF THEM TOO . CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THEM ! BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! ENJOYED 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 GOD BLESS YOU ALL ALWAYS ON YOUR ADVENTURES 🙏 THANK YOU 🙏
Hope to share how they perform soon.
Teraflex Falcon shocks also have stone guards ;)
Kings also have guards…
I'm just catching this video 9/15/24 will these shocks work on my 21 glad Mojave
They will but the whole purpose of getting a Mojave is for the shocks they come with.
Do the rear piggyback shocks have some play left to right? I just installed ohlins shocks and the rears have some play. I believe its normal 😊
As in, a rotational play? If so, yes, this is normal.
I looked at these for my JLUR but ultimately bought the Blistein 8100’s instead.
Those are certainly a lot more affordable.
Did you buy the double external bypass ones?
Can you give a ball park price so we have an idea what we're up against?
$3790 for all 4 according to their website.
Didnt see you mention the setting on the remote reservoir. Have you tried that one to limit the speed of the oil transferring to the main body valving?
Watch here ruclips.net/video/skES0juqkx4/видео.html
How are is your front diff breather hose staying on? Any issues? Mine came off with a 2.5 lift after I disconnected the sway bar on a sport. Are they all the same length? Or are rubicons longer? Weird question probably. Awesome video as always!
LOL - I adjusted them down. You can see it in this video ruclips.net/video/7EzDf1K_yOk/видео.html
@@wayalife your the man
I have a 2021 Gladiator diesel with a RLD shell and rack and some bolt on rocker bars that go over the factory ones. With some load in addition I am finding that the vehicle has noticeable rocking side to side when on uneven pavement, not even offroad. I am thinking I need stiffer springs and maybe shocks changed but really don't want a lift or only a minimal lift because I still run the factory 33 inch tires and will go up only to 35 inch once these wear out. Watching some of your shows I am assuming you are in CA. Can you recommend a suspension shop in CA that could do the work?
Based on what you've described and what you're wanting to do, I would first start by installing a heavy duty rear sway bar. That should help to reduce the roll feel that you have. If after that you're still unhappy, I would then install new shocks as the factory ones are way too soft in my opinion. As far as shops go, if you're willing to make the drive out to Hanford, CA, I would recommend Disciple Off Road. Ask for Jeremy and please let him know that I sent you.
@@wayalifeThank you for your fast reply. I live in TX now. Used to live in Ventura Co. for 25 years. I will be traveling to CA next week to Palm Springs, L.A., then Simi Valley. Hanford is a ways out but I will contact them and see what they say. Ohlins are pricey but I plan to keep the vehicle until it is dead or I am. Want to do the job right once. Only shock change without springs being changed?
To the best of my knowledge, Ohlins does not make a stock application shock. only 2" of lift and above.
@@wayalifeContacted Jeremy. He is supposed to develop some options for me to consider. Thank you again.
