Sabres made pretty significant changes to their roster. Bottom six completely redone and much improved. In the process, have actually assembled a "team". Previously, they were a bunch of prospects that they hoped filled out each role. And then they found out, they were lacking in certain areas. You can't fill a team with scorers and expect to win.
Power is still nowhere near his ceiling. He's played well for his first 2 years, but there are many times he goes on misguided adventures. Something to be expected of a young defenseman logging top 4 minutes at a very young age. He will be better. Dahlin was ready to win last year. Byram will probably be better. The other three are very solid.
Did you mention we have a new coach, one who likely will be in the HOF some day? Lindy is back and he's not going to put up with defensive lapses. He also has won with substandard offense in the past. He's never had what he's walking in to now, except for with the Devils last season. They had their own issues on the back end, however.
I hope all three of these teams make it. I'm expecting my favorite team(Buffalo) to pull it off. And that's THE first time in MANY years, I've felt this way. Wasn't convinced it would happen last year. If they miss THIS year, I'm gonna be upset.

I do think Lindy Ruff will help fix the offense, but what everyone is overlooking in the bottom 6 signings is the massive improvement in defense that will come from it. I started really getting into the NHL in 2019-20. The season pause gave me a chance to better learn the teams and divisions, and I distinctly remember memorising the seven teams that didn't make the expanded playoff cut: the three California teams, the Devils, and these three Atlantic teams.

Part of that is that Detroit has never directly played against either of these teams in the playoffs. My thoughts on all 3.
Detroit: I think they finish in last place in the Atlantic. Bottom 6 isn't great, Defense is questionable and They don't really have a #1 Goalie still.
Buffalo: Bottom 6 looks great, lots of depth, they just need their Top 6, especially Thompson to be that elite player he was 2 seasons ago. Defense needs to be stronger, that involves Power showing why he was drafted #1 overall and I think UPL is gonna be great. I predict Buffalo making the playoffs.
Ottawa: Their forward group is awesome. Top 9 will compete against most and I think Tkachuk will reach that other level and Stutzle will also have a bounce back season. On defence I expect alot of mistakes and I don't think Ullmark is the answer. He'll be good but I just really think Bruins team defence helped him alot.
I also want to add another team.
Montreal: If this team can stay healthy I think we can see this team make a push for playoffs and surprise people. On defence they are deep, Top 6 could be deadly. Laine resurgence perhaps and full season of Dach could be a difference maker. and in net, Sam Montembeault is very underrated and I could see him making a case to be on the Team Canada roster.
With all that being said, which team in the Atlantic takes a step back... hard to say but back to back finals from Panthers and losing key players will hurt them, Lightning lost Sergachev, they don't look that impressive on paper IMO. Leafs will probably finish in first and Bruins system and summer acquisitions were solid.
    My top 3 in atlantic
    1. Leafs
    2. Bruins
    3. Panthers
Wildcard: Sabres ... Lightning and Sens miss playoffs finishing 9 and 10 in East. Montreal 12 and Detroit 14

I'm a Red Wings fan. I feel like, depending on the opening night roster, that they are ever so slightly worse this season than last. The offense from the backend will take a hit. The offense from the forwards will rely on Raymond having a year like the last quarter of 23-24 as well as Larkin and Kane having full seasons. Tarasenko could go either way in replacing Perron's offense. Goaltending looks like it'll be messy unless Talbot settles things down. They need more of the rookies to graduate which may have to wait until next season. Berggren and Johansson probably are not going to be needle movers. I'm not even sure Mazur would be. Kasper wouldn't. Danielson? Maybe. One last thing, I believe what Yzerman did with bobbling the defense a little this offseason had to do with Trouba. I think he thought he had that one in the bag.
I want it to be the Red Wings, but I'd put money on Buffalo's offense coming back or maybe even Ullmark being enough for Ottawa to squeak in before I would Detroit. I hope I'd lose that money!

Any team can become a victim of the injury bug, for which there is no way of predicting! With Lindy Ruff back behind the bench, Buffalo just needs to avoid the injury bug to have the best chance at ending the playoff drought.

Getting rid of Skinner could be the boost Sabres needed. Yes, they lost a player that scored goals. But they gave up more goals than scored when Skinner was on the ice. A career minus 130 player. Just getting a player that even remotely plays a 200ft game could benefit the Sabres. Also why Skinner was pushed down the lineup. Then without other top players to carry him. He disappeared.

Buffalo has the potential to make it and also to be below Montreal, like the Canadiens they have way way too many ifs. Ottawa potentially fixed their #1 issue which was goaltending and added Perron. Detroit came so extremely close last season, more games from Kane, the addition of Tarasenko and more from DeBrincat could be enough.
If i was a betting man, on paper Ottawa will improve the most, but might still not make it, Detroit will also improve by a few points ... which most likely will be enough to qualify.
All these teams (MTL included) need for younger players to take big steps to go anywhere, had injury issues and questionable goaltending, any of these teams could get screwed again by any of these factors. Also the Metro could be strong enough again, that none of these teams make it, NYR, CAR are a lock, NJD are supposedly contenders, Washington improved a lot ... and Pittsburgh isn't dead yet.

They are really banking on Talbot to not let the beach balls that got in last year. Talbot has been remarkably steady in net over his career. If he can maintain it with Detroit's sub average defense maybe they stand a chance at the playoffs, but I wouldn't put money on the Wings this year.

Detroit "should" have made the playoffs the last two years, and would have save for the 10 or so game streaks they went on each of the last two seasons where they completely fell on their face. Last season Detroit goes 5-10-0 in Dec, and completely collapses in March with a record of 3-10-1. Detroit goes say .500 both those months they add 12 points putting them at 103 and 3rd in the Atlantic.

The Senators finally took a big step to address their major weakness in net that has plagued them for a while now, so I give them the best chance, except for the fact that they seem cursed. Every time they seem poised to make the next step, they implode. Buffalo feels like they haven't done enough to make much of a push. Losing one of their top goal scorers isn't going to help and not being able to trade him for anything helps even less. They probably need new management and ownership as much as anything. The Yzerplan in Detroit just keeps ticking along and I expect them to make a few shrewd moves this season to improve their team enough to make a run at a playoff spot. There's a good chance of both Detroit and Ottawa making it, but a lot of crazy can happen between opening night and the last game of the season.

I want to be hopeful for my Sabres, but I've seen this movie too many times before. I think Lindy was the best they were going to be able to do in terms of getting a HC this offseason. He's obviously well-seasoned, he's a known quantity in Buffalo on a number of levels, he's adjusted to the modern game pretty well, and he was actually willing to come here. If this doesn't work nothing will.

  • @Bestjamesbond
    @Bestjamesbond 5 дней назад

Really tough question. In terms of team mental I think Detroit ranks near the top. I think their guys buy into the system more than either Ottawa and Buffalo. I think Ottawa is an emotional time-bomb that's waiting to go off each year. Maybe Perron helps calm everybody down, but so far they seem like they do NOT have any leadership in the locker room.
The Sabres on the other hand feel like they could make a legit push, but they did pick up Reimer as a backup goalie, so I'm rather concerned for them on that front. Reimer is very hit or miss. Aside from that i am seeing rumors they keep missing out on the FA's they want because nobody wants to move to Buffalo.
If the Wings stay healthy (right, big if) and buy into their defensive system better than last year, then I think they leapfrog NYI and Washington in the standings. In terms of Atlantic division standings, maybe 1) Florida, 2.)Toronto, 3.) Boston, 4.) TBL, 5.) Detroit. Atlantic getting both Wild card spots. Super curious how the Stamkoless TBL fair, but I expect they'll still be extremely competitive. Boston surely will begin to fall off.

The Sens need to get off to a better start. Their problem is that they historically start slow. Buffalo needs to actually play defense. All of these “great young defensemen” everyone talks about are OFFENSIVE defensemen. They’re terrible defensively as a team. Detroit needs to get Seider and Raymond signed, they need Kane to be the Kane plus some from last season, and God knows they need Larkin to stay healthy. They’re goaltending and defense are iffy, but Talbot is a Band-Aid to get to Cossa, and the D-core gets upgraded with the kids as the current contracts expire. Any one of them could make the Playoffs…and maybe even two make it depending on Tampa and the Metro. I don’t think it’s a lock that the Caps or the Isles make it this season. I think the Rangers, Devils, and Canes are locks. After that though…the Metro kinda sucks.
