Crazy how PiLi did the hard work of stabilizing on tier 3 and then slowly threw it all away by neglecting upgrades. dont forget the shield and air armor upgrades ! If the marines trashed the interceptors its in huge part for that reason !!! He had shield 1 and armor 0 !!
The big problem with any attempt to rush to T3 is that the units are so expensive and so slow to produce that a bunch of quickly produced tier 1-2 units can just overwhelm them, and those lower tier units have been producing way earlier too. What this ultimately results in is a crucial need for a medium number of T3 units to survive, which can sometimes make it really hard to budget for upgrades because there's no cheap buffer units fighting the opposing cheap buffer units. And another kick to the budget's nuts is that you also need a lot more advanced production structures to make up for how painfully slowly the T3 units are being made. There's the additional problem that T3 units tend to be really slow, so it's hard to use them for attacking and defending simultaneously because wherever they currently are, they're stuck at and won't be saving/reinforcing anything quickly enough to matter. The result is that you're either forced to turtle and thus allowing the opponent to just expand with minimal opposition or you attack with a force that's super easy to counterattack against since they won't be returning to defend without recall (Toss actually has a slight crutch in this department...but on a cooldown that can be juked into using at the wrong time).
