You should try (if you've not already reviewed it) her 1989 album "Like A Prayer" - a pop aural masterpiece.
So excited for you to see the Bedtime Story video, one of her most expensive and artistic ever.
Best tracks: Bedtime Story, Inside of Me, Secret, Survival
The album is a little too soft for me. Gets a little boring when listening front to back. But because the production is so clean and polished (in dramatic contrast to the previous album which felt grittier and less polished) any one of these songs could have been successful singles in my opinion. Well, except Bedtime Story - which actually WAS a single, but since it was so avant-garde in 1994/95 when it was released, the general public really didn't know what to do with it. I was a teenager at the time, and I even remember Madonna fans not liking it, thinking it was too weird. Of course 20 years later they all love it. Which just speaks to how ahead of its time it was.
You know that "Ray of Light album" will rock your world!
Fun facts about this album (since you like them so much)
-Madonna , apparently, does not have good memories about this album. She had limited time and had to work with many producers and musicians to achieve the mixture between the more R&B sound and the trip hop sound.
-she has performed very little of this album. A tour was not in the plans since she wanted to audition and then play Evita. Only secret and human nature have been included in official tour setlists.
-Inside of me is about her mother, who died when she was a child. During an interview in 96 a journalist asked her if she could trade all the money and fame she has for something, what could it be and she responded “a mother”
-Bedtime story is written by bjork, who is neelle hopper’s friend. Not only the song is masterpiece, but the music video is permanently archived at the MOMA for its artistry.
- Human nature is about the erotica controversy.
-Take a bow is one of Madonna’s biggest hits, no other song of Madonna has stayed as long at n1 at the charts.
She did Take A Bow on the Rebel Heart Tour.
She didn't perform it, but bedtime story was included in the official setlist of reinvention tour as an interlude
The way Sanctuary fades into Bedtime Story is love. This is such a great chill album to listen to on a rainy sunday...
Right! Gorgeous segue. I agree!
So true.
I agree!!
The song Bedtime Story was so ahead of its time imo, it still sounds fresh and avantgarde today 24 years later.
Yes, I hope she reacts to Bjork one day!
you're so right, it definitely has a very unique sound that does not feel dated at all
@@SisleyReacts Can't wait for you to react to its video, it's just as unique, sensual and avant garde as the song.
Marcus Reindl so trueeee
Inside Of Me is actually about her mother, many people think it's about a romance or even sexual but she stated she wrote it about her mom, who died when she was 5.
Once you know this, and re-listen to the song, it totally makes sense and makes the song so much more special. That song, Survival, and Bedtime Story are my favorites.
I think her Bedtime Stories era, is Madonna at her sexiest. Lush vocals, slick grooves, poetic lyrics. While Erotica was "leather and chains" BS was "lace and satin".
"Love tried to Welcome me" and "Sanctuary" are a few of my favorites.
omg the "leather and chains" vs "lace and satin" metaphor is so on point, I love that! it perfectly pinpoints the differences between the two eras
Sisley Reacts thank you for your response. Love your channel!
Jeremy Greig . I freakin love . Love tried to Welcome me :D
The bedtime story video will blow your mind
The LEGO version of Bedtime Story will suck your mind....
yeah!!!! give it a try
One word: quality ... i miss those Madonna times.
I enjoy listening to you talk about the music. Its like I’m hearing these songs for the first time.
Bedtime is like a more polised and sweeter version of Erotica. Very sofisticated. Enfusing R&B and trip hop. More of what I wanted on Erotica.
Such an underrated album era... very slow jam, funky, fresh, fragile and experimental.... some Trip Hop teases to where she was heading next in Ray of Light... LOVE Bedtime Stories... in fact Prayer/Erotica/Stories are my fave trilogy of pop albums by anyone ever ;-) Though....some more incredible things to come... the videos for this era were experimental and out of this world too
I feel like the critical response to this album was actually quite positive at the time, and Take a Bow redeemed her after Erotica bore no real strong hits. Of all her #1 billboard singles, Take A Bow held the position the longest. I think what happened with this album is that after the passage of time, fans and critics didn't hold it as high as other albums, making it seem under-appreciated. But honestly, when you hold it against juggernauts like Like A Prayer, Ray Of Light, True Blue, and even Erotica, as good as it is, those albums are just typically seen as stronger. And thats not a bad thing. And like Sisely says, all opinion at the end of the day. The title track Bedtime Story though, easily one of the five best songs of hers during this decade, and THAT truly is an underappreciated song. Should have charted so much higher than it did. I don't think I ever heard it on the radio once here in Minneapolis.
react to Ray Of Light album
Can't wait until you get to the ray of light and confessions eras!!
Bedtime stories was understated on purpose due to all the controversy and noise erotica made. It gave her 2 major hits secret ( the first single) reached # 2 on billboard hot 100 , and take a bow reached # 1 and is to date Madonna's longest running # 1 single. Human nature is also a single and produced one of, i think her finest pieces of work with its music video. Bedtime story the song was also a single and was written by bjork . in many ways that song, its vibe and electronic infusions was a precursor to her magnus opus Ray of light, when she released it at the ripe age of forty in 98. I love bedtime stories, for me its in the top 3 Madonna albums as i rank them. Its simple, effortless, and captured the current r&b trend of the mid nineties and eluded to glimpses of what was to come later with EDM in the late nineties and the beginning of the new millennium. Thank u for your honest reactions
WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE THE VIDEO FOR BEDTIME STORY! THAT SINGLE AND THE VIDEO ARE A PEEK AT MADONNA'S FUTURE MUSICAL INTENTION.
Take a Bow and Secret are such beautiful videos, but Human Nature and Bedtime Story - those are EPIC. As much as I found this album a little too soft, a little too bland, the videos are literally the best of her entire career. Easily. #amazingvideos
The Bedtime Story video was the first music video to be placed into the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection in New York
Another amazing review!! 🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳 I remember running home from school to meet my mum from work to go buy this album on cassette 😂😂😂 I’d Rather Be Your Lover was originally recorded featuring the late 2Pac where he rapped on it, they were dating at the time! Bedtime Stories (the song) was written by Bjork and I find it so funny that you find it eerie and dark as it is very relevant for when you see the accompanying video! 👍🏻😂 Love this album very much!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Amazing reaction as always! My favorite songs here are Take a Bow, Secret, Bedtime Story, Forbidden Love and Survival
My favorite Madonna album. Her voice sounds so good with this lush R&B. The most beautiful lyrics she has ever written.
That was a great reaction! I love Bedtime Stories it's in my top 5 favorite Madonna albums. My favorite song from it is Secret, while my least favorite is Don't Stop. That song and the song Forbidden Love were planned to be singles, but those plans never materialized. Human Nature was chosen by Madonna over Don't Stop and Forbidden Love was included on the Something to Remember compilation instead. A tour was also planned, but cancelled once Madonna was chosen to star in Evita.
You have 8 videos to react to before moving on to the Ray of Light era:
-Secret
-Take a Bow
-Bedtime Story
-Human Nature
-I Want You
-You'll See
-Love Don't Live Here Anymore
-You Must Love Me
She wrote "Love tried to welcome me" after watching a topless stripper in a club. She tried to put words to her inner dialogue.
Omg I can’t believe you’re already to Bedtime Stories!! “Love Tried to Welcome Me” will always be one of my all time favorite songs!!
**Fun fact** I’d Rather be Your Lover originally feat. 2Pac (who she was dating around this time) but record company drama.. you can find Madonna/2pac version on RUclips though
I think Madonna agreed with you regarding "Human Nature" and "Bedtime Story" as Madonna performs "Human Nature" on her tours even now and "Bedtime Story" was the start of what Madonna went with for Ray of Light. Funny enough, her biggest hit from his album was "Take a Bow" which spent like 7 weeks as no. 1 on the chart, but Madonna has not revisited since this time period. "Take a Bow" was very R&B and it was what people were listening to at the time.
A lot of 90s kids have fond memories of Bedtime Stories just because it really reflected the R&B sounds that was dominating the sales chart at the time. Pop music in the 90s was not like the 80s unless you were listening to like Euro boy bands or something and took a back seat to 90s alternative, gangsta rap, R&B, pure house or electronica, and country music (as people who missed American pop and didn't like the harshness of rap and rock started listening to that). I feel like maybe the 90s were a time where people wanted to go deeper into genres and really find ways to expand upon it. Music seemed to have more variety back then than now where now it seems most popular music has a very formulaic and homogeneous sound, but the sound is one people really love as it seems to mix danceability with rap breaks and hooks. It was probably a natural evolution of 90s music where people mixed the best things of all the genres and put it together to make something sellable for today.
I agree, the mix in the charts was amazing...especially the females as well...Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Garbage, Aaliyah, Toni Braxton etc.
The whole grunge/ alternative bands selling millions...
But there was always pure pop/ dance on the charts as well, during the height of grunge and gansta rap, there were Ace Of Base having the biggest selling album and single of 1994...after that Spice Girls dominated 1997/98, Backstreet Boys, Nsync, Hanson followed...
La Bouche in 1995/6 with their eurodance/ pop sound as well and other German popbands like Real McCoy etc.
Good reaction! This album was a move to soften her image after her “Sex” book , “Erotica” album, and a sexually provocative role in “Body of Evidence”. She got a lot of backlash from critics at that time that she admits to have had an emotional impact in her life. However, she pressed on with this album which spun 4 singles. “Secret” was a top five hit and “Take a Bow” was her longest running number one single on the Billboard charts. “Human Nature” and “Bedtime Story” were critically acclaimed but were not radio hits in the US. I like that you are reviewing her chronologically. Next up is “Something To Remember” compilation album which has a new release of “You’ll See” in the US and “Veras” overseas. It also had the re-release in the US of “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” and overseas “One More Chance” and “I Want You”.
This is one of her best albums. All of the videos were on point including Bedtime Story which is her best video of all time - the production was so futuristic and out of this world.
For the next era, I would highly recommend watching her film Evita and doing a review of it instead of just listening to the soundtrack (which will leave you quite confused if you're not watching the movie).
This was my first Madonna album, basically I discovered her with this one. It has a special place in my heart, it's definitely in my top 5!! How many memories!! Thanks for this!! There are 4 videos out there, you should check them.
love this album......can't wait to see u watch "Human Nature" and "Bedtime Story".......Will u be reacting to her "Something To Remember" videos and "Evita" or go straight to "Ray of Light"?
Love try to welcome me is so latín vibes I love it
Sanctuary is so experimental jewel
I miss M's deep alto that shines so bright in "Secret" and which she sadly all but discarded with ROL and discovering of her higher registers. Until the haunting "Ghosttown" and then I heard it again :)
I'm loving your videos! This was the first Madonna CD I bought when it was released, since I became a fan in 1993! Great album! Kisses from Brazil!
I think I'm most fascinated by your observations about the lengths of tracks, and whether they are too monotone. I was born in '76, and this was always how songs sounded to me, right up until the early/mid 2000's, where pop music seemed to undergo a change, where now tracks are all roughly three and a half minutes.
Albums in the 70s/80s/90s typically had songs that ran around 5 minutes, then the singles would have 7" mixes (often referred to as radio mixes) and 12" versions (often for clubplay) that clocked in around 6+ minutes.
I think with the introduction of iTunes, people don't buy full albums anymore, just stream the singles, so they don't realize that album version are oftentimes longer. I also think in the last 10 pop artists have started using the 7" mixes for their albums. Which to me is a bit sad. For example, I very much prefer the album version of songs like Don't Tell Me and Die Another Day to the radio mixes, which cuts out what I consider some of the best bits of the song.
This album is fantastic. I specially love "Inside of Me" which she wrote for her mom.
I've never been so much into "Human Nature", which was a response to the bad reviews she received around the "Erotica" era.
"Love Tried to Welcome Me" is one of my favorites together with "Secret" and "Bedtime Story"
"Take A Bow" was her first number one in many years and it was no surprise it reached and stayed on the top for 7 weeks. It is simply perfect.
After all the noise around the previous era, it was natural Madonna decided to show a softer side of hers, although many people (specially in the USA) were sick and tired of listening about her.
The only thing missing here was definitely a tour to promote the album. Back then she had mentioned on MTV she would probably fous on a tour after finishing "Evita". Unfortunately it never happened.
Cool reaction! "Let's get unconscious, honey."
2pac was supposed to be on Rather Be Your Lover. But in this artistic direction, which was a softer image, they ended up changing the feature to stray away from his current controversies.
This album has grown on me quite a bit( it’s my second favorite Madonna album after Like A Prayer now) but I was turned off initially because it was slower, but then I willed myself to come back and now I can’t stop playing it!!
I love your reactions! Secret is in my favorite top 5 Madonna songs! I can’t wait for your reactions of the videos of this album, especially Human Nature!! And then Comes my Favorite Madonna album Ray of Light!!
16:43-16-49 I actually lip synced that part to you Sisley, and I was so glad you didn't speak, then you said it was giving you chills. Lol.
Uau " Bedtime Stories" is one of my favorites Madonna's album. It has great songs and Madonna's vocal in this album is perfect.
The feat. on “I’d Rather be Your Lover” was Meshell Ndegeocello
A artist that was on Madonna’s record label back then
Maverick Records 👍🏼
The song Bed time story was written by Bjork!
This is not one of my favorite albums, but the track Bedtime Story is one of my favorite singles in her entire catalog, so I was happy to see it was your favorite track, too. I've always felt this was her most dated sounding album. But you're right, its very soft, very pretty. Inside of Me is about her mothers death. Human Nature was a reaction to critic responses to Erotica. The videos from this era are in my opinion the peak of her career. They are lush, gorgeous, creative, and so so fun.
You'll want to watch the four promotional videos for this album, as well as the three videos for 1995's ballad collection Something To Remember.
In the order of release: 1. Secret 2. Take a Bow 3. Bedtime story 4. Human Nature
From Something to Remember: 1. I want you 2. You'll See 3. Love don't live here anymore
She had some promotional videos for 1996's Evita soundtrack, but these are not really part of her commercial studio albums, and I don't know that I would watch any of them as they are just stock footage from the film. If anything, I would only recommend watching her Grammy performance of You Must Love Me, where she wear's one of the most stunning dresses, with a gorgeous train. Honestly, if you feel compelled to watch anything from the Evita era (1996/1997) watch the Grammy performance of this song. Thats just me. Someone else recommended listening to the audio for One More Chance. This was only a single in certain regions in Europe, there was no music videos, and the song is nothing special, I'd skip it. I mean, you didn't do the audio for other non-album singles like Gambler, Causing A Commotion, or The Look of Love, so no reason to start now.
That's just me though. I can't wait for you to watch these videos though. Especially I WANT YOU with Massive Attack. Its a cover of Marvin Gaye, and the video is very reminiscent of Roman Polanski's film REPULSION. Just gorgeous to watch, she looks stunning.
You are a legit music lover. Your taste in real music is infectious. Blessings!
This is the only album of her that i love COMPLETE. I'm so happy that you like it. My favourites are Human Nature Secret and I'D Rather Be Your Lover
Bed time stories Madonna still invites us in her bedroom but this time she closes the curtains !!! ;)
I love your accent & you always pick up on the key points to the tracks.Keep it up 👍🏻
Björk wrote the lyrics of Bedtime Stories. She recognized she made it as a favor to a producer and she’s not really into the final product and tho I love both, I think Björk should be glad it was a great work/ “collaboration”
I love this album so much.
Particularly loved your reaction to Inside of Me!
you rock sisley! Easily my fave reaction channel.
It was my second Madonna's CD. I remember that in 1998 was common to find the CD in stores. Today is rarity.
Secret ❤️
For me Madonna was at her absolute best throughout the 90's and to the mid 2000's. I'm a little disappointed in the amount of auto tuning and processing that kind of eliminates all personality from her voice in recent albums. I love her vocals in this cd and the Ray of Light in particular.
love your reactions, Survival and Inside of Me are my favourites from this album, Inside of me is about her mother :(
This album is very Rnb, she made it to fix her image after erotica. Human nature is about the controversy behind erotica. This album is so excellent at first I thought it was boring but I got back in there in fell in love with love tried to welcome me, inside me, take a bow, human nature, sanctuary. Also take a bow is Madonna’s longest #1 single in the US. After you’re done with this era react to ‘something to remember’ which is her ballad compilation album with 3 new songs and 4 videos also to fix her image.
Sanctuary is the best in this album!!
You're a sweetheart!
This is a great album😀
This was one of my fav Madonna albums so underrated love how she went all rnb
React to the videos,Take a bow secret,Human nature and Bedtime story!
Girl knows her music !
Not my favourite Madonna album, but still pretty decent. And yeah, the production on the Ray of Light album i'm sure will blow your mind, how different it is.
Agreed. Not a fav of mine either. I did live for the maxi singles though. Tenaglia's mixes of Human Nature, Juniors mixes of Secret, and the Orbital mix of Bedtime Story, those all slayed me. And those videos. A fun time in her career, but I don't often revisit this studio album.
Only one statement here. EROTICA was cold, BEDTIME STORIES was warm. Thats it.
bedtime story written by björk! masterpiece!
If you listen to BJork single I can't remember which one but her versions on it it's totally different the structure same but Madonna added an ad libbed an changed an awful lot lyric lly but production wise Madonna's rules
2Pac was originally featured on I'd rather be your lover, they were dating at the time
please grl, react to HUMAN NATURE, a video from this conceptual album
I love how Erotica and Bedtime Stories are quite oposite from each other...
for me these repetitive rnb songs are entrancing more than boring... I get transported by them and I find them more delicate and private by their simplicity.
My first video I am watching of yours and I really enjoyed your reaction! :) Just curious, which country are you from?
thanks! glad you enjoyed it :) I'm from lithuania
Wow that's amazing your Lithuanian but do you live in Canada your accents Canadian I thought sorry I just kinda shocked
check out the outtake "your honesty"
I love your energy and joy 😍
This is the era that I heard first as a kid. It instantly made me a life long fan.
You will find Bedtime Story Music Video very interesting! In addition to that, it would be so magical if you could react to the Reinvention Tour Bedtime Story backdrop, only if you're able to do it! ❤ But AFTER Human Nature and Bedtime Story, otherwise you will not understand the few references and allusions
Fun Fact: bedtime story was written by Björk, for Madonna. It was more or less a favor for one of Björk friends lol. Then Madonna changed some of the lyrics before recording
I'd Rather Be Your Lover was a duet with 2Pac, but due to some personal issues back then they decided to not release it.
Please react to Madonna's "Human Nature" music video from this album!
OMG, I felt like covering your ears when Inside of Me came on. You look like you could me my daughter. haha.....btw, I see a ukulele in the corner, do you play it?
Are you going to react to every official music video for this era? Please do! ♡
yes!
Don't forget the Something to Remember era after
Btw Tupac was on Id rather be your lover at first!
Love your videos, sweetie 👍👍👍
Love your videos! Can you please react to Michael Jackson? 😍😍😍
My favorite!
Take A Bow it's her best ballad. No competetion, maybe Rain or Crazy For You, but they can't reach Take A Bow.
Im so exated for You to react to Ray of light
If you like the Bedtime Story track, you should listen to Bjork, who wrote this song. Her work is amazing and totally original and she is one of the biggest names in indie music.
REACT TO RAY OF LIGHT!!!
