This Sony Camera Can See In The Dark
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 окт 2022
- The Sony F-717 is a consumer photography camera that has a night vision feature - not only does it have a movable hot mirror filter to photography in infrared, but it also has two infrared lights at the front of the lens. This means the camera can take pictures in complete darkness.
It's a 5mp CCD sensor camera with a 38-190mm Carl Zeiss branded lens that takes beautiful pictures in normal photography modes as well. Throw in there the rotating body design, and you have one weird, but awesome, $30 old digital camera. It's one of my all-time favorite cameras Sony ever made - and I have quite a few Sony's, actually :)

It's my favorite in the series, even if it doesn't have headlights :) A genuinely great old digital camera.
Hope you enjoyed this fun Halloween special! :)
happy snappin'!

So the F828 doesn’t have the night shot mode?
@@dedclownsRfunnyI have the f-828 and it does have both night framing and night shot.
For anyone who doesn't want to deal with magnets or just doesn't mind having the camera in full spectrum all the time (F707, F717, F828):
1) put the camera in nightshot mode, then remove the battery. this keeps the electromagnet controlling the ir cut filter polarized in one direction, eliminating the need to do the magnet trick every time you change modes or restart the camera.
2) partially disassemble the lens body by removing the visible screws on the side, pull the panel off, and look for the electromagnet. essentially, you have to break the current between the camera and the electromagnet so the camera can no longer flip the polarity when you switch out of nightshot. if you do it right, the camera will operate in full spectrum mode indefinitely. the magnet trick will still work if you ever want to use the internal cut filter.
This is a cool tip, thanks! Love learning more and more about these Sonys.
Finally a great camera to film my local skinwalker
👀
Love this era of camera design. Daring, unique and wacky form factors no longer confined to holding 35mm film transport. Now everybody uses an uninspiring thin rectangular slab.
Agreed! So many gems from this era when people were trying all sorts of things.
I bought this camara as a teenager in 2007, i found it it a pawn shop i only had 700 mxn (40 usd) i saved from the part time job i had at the time. So much i spend in my youth with this, i buy one online 5 min ago, i thought i'll never see another one again, in mexico, is rare to found one.
Paranormal Snapptivity
What I had going through my mind the whole time making this.
@@snappiness as soon as I typed that you commented about the video having a paranormal quality and I was like this guy gets it lol
@@snappiness so, have any 'appearances' in the wood so far? 👀
Lol I take a lot of photos with my unmodified IR filter at cemetery
Just the right camera for Halloween.
That was my thinking too :D
Such a cool camera had one of these and it's by far the weirdest i've held. Wish they still added bizarre fun features like these to new cameras!📸
The macro mode on this lens was epic. I owned it and took probably 100,000+ shots back in the day.
I still keep one on the shelf as well a dsc-s50 as both served me very well in their day. I started with a the s50 then upgraded to The 717. The camera was around $1k iirc, and proved to be a worthy investment as I shot a lot of paid work on it & the dsc-s50 in a pre dslr era. Current day I shoot Sony mirrorless. Great video, throughly enjoyed.
I've got a similar Sony camera from the same year and I have used the night vision combined with an IR flashlight and a helmet mount as a cheap Cronenberg version of a night vision
Very cool!
I can't believe i just bought this camera for 15€ and when i saw it at the fliehmarket i was like "cool camera, maybe it does something cool". The night vision thing is already worth it and the unusual stuff too ! Eaven by today's standards it shoots good images. The fact that you can switch from finder to main screen is also super cool. Overall i think it's a Marvel of a camera !
Nice find!
Awesome review... Very interesting camera! So many unique features! I swear Snappiness is trying to make us poor with these amazing camera finds :) Always a great content! Thanks for sharing!
At least this time I did a cheap one :)
I have the F717 and 707 both still producing good quality pictures, very tridimensional images due the carl zeiss optics, was so advanced in time
Had this one, remember taking it to expo openings and taking lots of photos of paintings and sculptures, and taking photos of the speech and ruining everyone else's photos with the hologram thing, and annoying them a little, i called it the predator pointer
I have the f707 now and I am having so much fun with it!
this sony camera and it's similar models are not the only ones that have the night vision feature, some sony handicams actually have a hot shoe accessory that can support an extra infared light to use nightshot with which I believe allows you to shoot subjects farther than the camera in the video would.
Had an f505, traded it to my BIL for a color TV and bought an f717, probably 20 yrs ago. Eventually bought a DSLR.
Recently dug my f717 out of its camera bag and ... I'd forgotten how much FUN it was to use. Now it goes everywhere with me.
Pros: See above.
Cons: Short battery life and small sensor -- but that's only in comparison to today's cameras. Also, proprietary memory media.
As long as you can get your hands on compatible Memory Sticks, the 717 is a perfectly good camera.
My cousin had an 828 backnin the day but I think he got it for looks. It's a chunky, intimidating looking camera. I think he uses his phone nowadays, if he takes pictures at all.
It's a very well thought design. You can adopt this design for current cellphones with additional external camera.
I have one of these and absolutely love it, took it to work to photograph a charger installation, the German engineer looked at the camera and tells me he used to make those when he worked at Sony (back in the day), that was 3 years ago and he still used it then and I am still using mine. Love the look, the features and the results.
You didn’t even mention the ‘nigh framing’ mode which is one of its coolest tricks. I still have the 717 and break it out and play with it often.
hello, what adapter you used to attach the wide angle lens to the camera?, i´m trying to put a sony VCL-MHG07 wide end conversion lens to my f717 like you showed on 3:13
My hasselblad h4d has this laser AF thing or assist light as well. They work really really well! Even in complete darkness
Have the SONY HDR-CX900E handycam (HD version, there is a 4K version as well) and it has the "Night Shot" as well... Cool feature.
Yeah! I've seen a lot of their handy cams had the same feature. Very fun.
I have 2 of these, we've been trying ghost type pictures at an 1800s cabin in Arizona.
Which size card can this use? I dont have any m2 cards and my camera is on the way. Just want to know what to order.
I have one, but one day the sensor stopped working correctly and the pictures turned into strange streaks. I miss those infrared pictures.
can we get this kind of build on a lens for the A7SIII?
I still have my F717, sits in a shelf for nostalgic purposes, learned digital photography with it, fun camera, barely used the Nightshot function, SONY should bring back that tilting/rotating body
It's a surprisingly practical body design! I like it.
@@snappiness I reiterate, SONY should make an updated version of these cameras
i’ve got a sony cassette camera with nightshot, this shit is the ultimate party trick when everyone else is drunk
The night vision in video mode gives me goosebumps!
I owned this brand new back in the day.
The Sony Nostromo. Should have been black to give more the spaceship look. Missed opportunity, but yeah cool camera. Sony pushed it pretty good in the day.
I think I paid around $700 when I bought my F707 brand new. I hated the Memory Stick cards even back then.
I'd like to try and recreate aerochrome type imaging with this
Please....Where can I get batteries and memories stick of Sony DSC-F717?
Batteries you can get on Wasabi Powers website. The memory sticks you just have to look around for used on eBay. It's kind of a pain, but they're out there. Just sometimes more than you want to pay :/
Just got my 707 in and bought brand new generic master batteries. The camera doesn’t like them I get a message saying to use infolithum, then shuts down after 10 seconds.
Anyone else have a bad experience with master batteries. Any good recommendations for other third party batteries that work?
Thanks in advance.
I have one of these, went down a whole infrared rabbit hole because of it...ended up with an F828, then a Ricoh GXR, then a Lumix FZ200.
Tell me more about the FZ200. Is that a camera often used for infrared too?
An external IR light would be awesome! Thank you for another great video
@snappiness ...are these conversion lenses (26mm equivalent) easy to find online? I got a F707 and wanted to experiment with this nostalgic but futuristic-like camera
Guys Is there any alternative camera like sony f717 that can take video in the dark . That use AA battery 🔋.
Be careful when buying of these because Sony had a large run with bad sensors. Make sure the one you buy actually takes pictures.
Nice touch of you releasing this video on Halloween! What a cute little gadget though.
Yes! I thought it was fitting :D
The 707 and 717 don't focus well in IR at the wide end of the lens, so you'll get much sharper images if you zoom in just a bit. The 828 does not have the same problem.
That's a good tip!
You can make a video of apparently anything nowadays from 90's kids junk drawer stuff....
Not sure if I commented this video before, but I bought one of these in excellent condition, everything powers on, but after taking a picture, the lcd is black. There is NO picture. This is due to a recall with the sensor on this camera. Of course the recall is no longer in effect, so you won't get Sony to fix it. I now have a paperweight.
New sub here what do you think about sony r5 thanks for your vids.
Really good story telling.
Well thank you!
Hi everyone my sony dsc-f717 has a weird issue where sometimes when I turn on the screen will be tinted a weird colour like blue,Green or yellow if I whack the Camera it will most of the time go back to normal and sometimes it switches to a different colour but I don’t think it’s the actual camera sensor itself because when I take a picture with it showing weird colours the picture turns out fine??
That happened to one of my copies too, and I haven't ever researched to see what the issue is. I'm guessing some display cable or something. Just glad it still takes pictures normally, and the display works most of the time.
@@snappiness oh good I’m not the only one!
@@snappiness also does this camera actually have a microphone because whenever I’m recording I just get a bunch of static noise
I got the same one but it’s newer
thats the camera ghost videos are shot on
Had it. Loved it.
I had a 757 myself. I loved it. Sony should bring back this body design with today’s tech.
so fuckking cool
Dead people and laser cannons. My personal favorites list for digital cameras.
Must haves :D
Seen the rapper TRAUMATIZE using one some time ago thought it was a new camera
Hey, that's pretty cool!!
What wizardry is this? It's somthing Pentax wishes they had done 😂
I'm glad Pentax stayed away from the headlights xD
It’s a shame that the nightshot mode is so nerfed and you have to use a hack to get manual controls, it would be nice if you had the green look and manual controls like the early ‘98 handycams.
I agree, it would've been way cool to just have full control of it, since they already did the hard bit of building the tech in there!
In 1998 there were concerns in the media about Sony camcorders with "NightShot" IR modes supposedly being used to see through clothing in the daylight, and due to the uproar from the public, Sony made all future cameras only work in NightShot with fully automatic exposure, and only suited to dark scenes, in order to calm the unfounded fears of an uneducated public.
Too bad that they don't make it anymore.
It was expensive to me anyway.
The Sony DSC-V1 and DSC-V3 do the same thing and half the size of that bazooka!
That's so cool! I knew they had night shot (I have several other sonys that do) but didn't realize they had lights as well! Just in different places.
@@snappiness just grabbed my V3 and for Nightshot there’s a small red light that is positioned near the edge of the camera above the lens. If you place your finger over it you lose the Nightshot IR capability. The light literally just glows. In comparison for Nightframing a matrix beam of red light is cast on the subject to frame it correctly then apply flash to pull it out of darkness. The V1 does the same. So no headlights like yours. I’m wondering are there two because of the size of the camera?
I have one and love it!
Weirdness aside, it actually is a really nice little camera.
@@snappiness I agree and I thank you for the video you made 8 months ago because that is what led me to purchase mine. I still need to pick up some filters for it though to get the full use out of it like you have suggested in that video.
The Blair Snap Project
Hope you enjoyed the spookiness :D About the most Halloween thing I could think of for a camera channel..
i have one
“Unusual”. Millennials in their new hipsterism with crappy digital cameras (now film is expensive again) discover Nightshot Mode, an usual feature in almost any Sony digicam 😂.
Did any of the other ones have the IR lights?
@@snappiness IR lights it’s the way they can achieve the Nightshot Mode, man. Otherwise it’s impossible.
why have a tilt screen when you can tilt the whole body
"I reshot the Blair Witch Project for $35 and a bag of Doritos"
Dangit, why didn't I think of that. And where's my doritos?😭
@@snappiness that's for the actors!
Cosmic Gate
wtf is a nocternal plant
Come on man just buy the Sony A7S series... that turns Night into Day
Unusual but near useless gimmick.
I'd tend to agree, and probably why it didn't make it to many other cameras after this time. I do like the DIY hacks to shoot infrared in any mode though. Leads to some really nice artistic IR stuff.
I disagree, the night framing mode uses the infrared and the laser focus to allow you to frame a nocturnal animal in complete darkness. But takes the actual photo with the flash. I wish all my cameras did this.
Irritating narration
Can it see thru clothing ?
