- Have you tried using colored pencil with alcohol markers?
Join me, illustrator and art instructor, Amy Shulke as we explore Copic Marker YR24 "Pale Sepia" plus how I enhance this ordinary golden orange marker with colored pencils. I've used colored pencil over marker illustrations for almost 30 years and I've got lots of tips and tricks to share.
If you're matching your pencils to the markers, you're missing an amazing opportunity to create new and unique colors, to express yourself artistically, and to develop your own personal style. Let's move beyond a literal interpretation of color to mix markers and pencils the way classically trained painters use paint. This is a fine arts approach to coloring and very different than the average coloring class.
This is an applied color theory exercise. This is not a coloring lesson and it is not intended as an alcohol marker blending tutorial.

We all seem to just glance off colors and don't really SEE all the colors. That's what I've learned from you. Thanks for sharing all of talent and knowledge.
You're welcome. My mother was always telling me to pay attention. I was, just not to what she thought was important. I guess now all that color gazing is finally paying off :)
Your video deserves SO many more views than this! Incredible detailed instruction, and to the point without fluff too! You have yourself a new student! ❤🎨
Thank you so much and I appreciate the subscription! I let my channel go dormant for several years while I focused on classes and courses. So now, I'm kinda climbing out of the hole where RUclips sticks people who take breaks. Glad you found me!
I Love coloring and watching you gives me pause. You are such a spectacular artist. Thanks for sharing your talent & knowledge
with us. 🥰
Thank you so much! I think the next video will be more about coloring than color... but I won't know until I'm looking at the coloring footage and thinking of what to say. Be sure to let me know what you think.
I was really struggling with layering pencil over marker yesterday. Now I'm excited to try again today!
Cool! Now that we're a few days later, how did it work?
This is fabulous! I’m learning to understand how colors play with each other from these mini series you’re doing. It’s the learning about the why of applying color in a certain way as well as how.
I'm so happy to read this! If "how" lessons worked for coloring, everyone would be branching off and doing original and innovative things instead of blending the same old blends. "Why" gives you the tools to make something unique.
The postcard series is really challenging me to stop looking at images with my inherent biases and analyze color. I am lucky enough to have two talented, trained artists as friends. My kind friends encourage me to see color and form, deepen contrasts, pop highlights, and experiment with more creative color choices. While I understand what they are trying to tell me, figuring out how to apply their advice to my coloring has been a struggle. In the process I've made every card making colorist mistake. Thanks to you, I am learning to speak their language as well as the practical skills I need to improve my coloring!
How cool! I think sometimes it just helps to have a marker or paintbrush in your hand and only then rerun the advice in your head. I'm sure your artist friends were giving you good advice but if they were giving it to you in a coffee shop or at a baseball game, it's not helpful because you can't see in your head what they mean and that means you can't process it. In the future, save their great advice in a note on your phone and re-read it later in at your coloring desk.
@@AmyShulkeMy friends and I all live in different states so critiques are done by email or text. What a great idea to save their notes on my phone to review with my work in front of me! Thanks!
Great video. Thank you!
I'm glad you liked it, Debbie!
I’ve just picked up art again, I fell in love with markers and adding color pencil. Loved watching your video, and your encouragement of making your own unique colors ❤
Wonderful! Marker and pencil is sooooo rewarding, I hope you'll love it as much as me. Wishing you great success!
