  • A distributed control system (DCS) is a digital automated industrial control system (ICS) that uses geographically distributed control loops throughout a factory, machine or control area. The goal of a DCS is to control industrial processes to increase their safety, cost-effectiveness and reliability.
DCS help operators to control operations with the help of HMI and controller. These systems automate safety processes, such as alarm management system, and undertake corrective measures and predictive maintenance of equipment.
In general, the components of DCS consist of 3 basic components, namely: Operator Station, Control Module, and I/O module.
The DCS enables applications such as production scheduling, preventative maintenance scheduling, and information exchange. A DCS facilitates the geographical distribution of subsystems throughout your plant. Used correctly, a DCS can greatly monitor or improve operational features such as: Efficiency.
A distributed control system (DCS) is a platform for automated control and operation of a plant or industrial process. A DCS combines the following into a single automated system: human machine interface (HMI), logic solvers, historian, common database, alarm management, and a common engineering suite.

In addition, as DCS response times are much higher when compared to PLC, DCS is best utilised for processes with more analog signals and PID loops. PLCs on the other hand are better for processes which require more discrete signals and less analog signals.
DCS software includes control, HMI, systems management software, engineering and configuration software, and plant information management (PIM) software such as bundled data historians in addition to performing HMI functions, DCS HMI software can also perform functions such as I/O communication.
Observes instruments plus meters to verify specified conditions records readings. Make corrective action regarding any operational disturbance, Coordinate with area operators for field adjustments also inform operation engineer of any irregularities.
