    Huge congrats Barry on your huge PB! I'd imagine the Vaporfly 3 might now have a soft sport in your running heart given how well you ran on the day. Thanks for your run down and experience. And I'm so with you about your pet peeve regarding having the bins too close to the drink stations. I'm the same as you as I remember in some races having to run with a plastic cup in my hand for kms waiting for a bin to throw it into because I didn't want to just dump it. Enjoy the moment and recall it often. Well done on such a good run and once again thanks for sharing your thoughts on the race.

    I watched your comparison video again
    I run now for fast effort VO2 max and Threshold up to 7k in the Alphafly V1 (with heel insert to add hight) and they are absolutely amazing. Vaporfly V2 just fast at any distance. I got the Endorphin Pro 3 and did one 10k Tempo run in them. So comfortable at any speed but not as unique as the Nike duo. But excellent metrics in the Endorphin Pro 3 though it felt quite easy.

    • @OldManRunner
      @OldManRunner  Год назад +1

      I like the Endorphin Pro 3 for tempo days. For racing I found a vagueness/lack of stability in the forefoot. The Vaporfly 3 was just a breeze in Rotterdam. I find it takes me time to lace to the right tightness, but after that they were a joy. I was also surprised how little wear there was in them after the marathon…

    Hi Barry, first congrats for your PB! 3:43 is fantastic! What a pace! You took a big risk by deviating from your game plan, but it worked this time! Great achievement! Kudos to your fitness! 👏👏👏
    BTW, I think using Morten CAF drink mix the night before was probably not a good idea. Caffeine probably affected your sleep.
    I am few years behind you and don't have a BQ time yet (my best is 3:49 in 2022). I am hoping to run Boston one day. But I heard good things about Rotterdam. Another interesting factoid is that they do Quarter Marathon there as well, instead of the usual 10K distance. As a matter of fact, I didn't know 1/4 marathon race existed at all beforehand. A Duch friend of mine ran the 1/4 marathon.
    This past weekend, I ran 10K race here in Austin, TX. Cap10K is the largest 10K in Texas and 6th in USA. It is a rather hilly course, at the beginning there is some congestion issues as well. Not one for PBs anyway. Ran 56:26. Top 20% in my age group. Significantly slower than my PB and slower than last year's 51:49 in the same race. I'll take it, having not done a lot of runs recently. At the moment, this is the best I can do with literally pain in the a**. I am still having some residual pain, but it is getting better.

    • @OldManRunner
      @OldManRunner  Год назад +1

      Great to hear from you Tolunay. For some reason everything came together in Rotterdam. I was very pleased that I could hold a pace… even more so that it was a good one. I fully recommend Rotterdam. The weekend is a festival of running. There is a City Race and a young persons race as well as the 1/4 Marathon. Everything is very compact so you can stay downtown and not have much travelling to do. I hope your pains ease up, but as long as you are enjoying it. The CAF the night before wasn’t too bad. I usually take the non CAF but every time I am restless the night before…though I do put a lot of focus on sleeping well and largely that works for me…

  • @bev9708
    @bev9708 Год назад +3

    Dutch orange!!😂😂 But of course Dutch orange!! I do LOVE that focus on discipline and self control rather than focusing on a finishing time … focusing on the process rather than the results, now isn’t THAT an important life lesson for every aspect of our lives!!! My goodness Barry, you sometimes wake up screaming ??!!!!😮 I wonder how long it took your long-suffering wife to get accustomed to that!!!
    Once again HUGE CONGRATS Barry!!! Bloody brilliant !!! I’m soooo looking forward to the day I can keep up with you!!!

    • @OldManRunner
      @OldManRunner  Год назад +1

      This time around I felt I finally got the hang of running a marathon, the key was the discipline of holding the pace, qualifying for Boston has taken a weight of my back/mind...and I was very happy with the kit...more on that anon. Yes the screaming is difficult for anyone who has the misfortune to be sleeping beside me. It can be quite random and out of the blue or there can be a slow build up...but when it starts! I can't say its a lot of fun for me either, but I've been doing it since I was a child so i guess it's here to stay...

      Next is the Jack and Jill Marathon in Washington State in July. The marathon is on Saturday and Sunday and has a reputation as being scenic and also a good Boston qualifying course. My original plan was to try to run a fast Saturday and try and film it on Sunday and make a story of the race...and I guess I will try for a fun fast pressure free run and then film also the Sunday...then I am in the New York marathon in November and that will again just be to run and film and have fun...

To be honest I am not looking to do Boston until 2025 (Can't afford it so soon after New York , and my wife would not be cool with me blowing another holiday for 4 days and a sweaty husband ). So its all good. I ran it comfortably hard and it worked very well for me , its how I plan to do it in future.
