    On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 7-28-20.
    We're looking at a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Rally Sport RS Z28 in Sequoia Green Paint. The car comes with the factory 302 CI V8 engine producing 290 HP.
    The car's Owner is Larry Smith. Larry’s had this car since 1968. He shares he used to drag race this car, and put it away, but kept all the original part. Well in 2008 he decided to restore his car with less than 11,000 original miles on it and today it looks showroom new.
    ENJOY!

    Great video Lou love watching your channel. I read a article in Super Chevy magazine years ago where I guy bought a new 1968 Camaro Z/28 in green with white stripes and after only a couple of months owning the car he got drafted into the military during Vietnam and he wrote home to his dad to sell the car and years later in the middle 1980s he found the car and bought it again and restored it back to original condition.

    Back in the 90's there was a 68 camaro for sale around the corner from where I worked for $1500. It was parked on a relatively desolate side street and it sat there for a while. I never heard it run but the body and interior was in great shape. I still kick myself every time I go by that place for not buying it. I should have borrowed or whatever it took to buy that car.

    Thanks Lou, I love how you incorporate the knowledge of these owners into your videos - like you said, the learning that comes with it is a huge part of why I like watching these. I had a '71 Z28 in college (those two endeavors did not mix well, unfortunately), but I always had the dream of getting a hold of an earlier model 'Z'. At 7:21 - you gotta love the ZL-1 flyer from Fred Gibb Chevrolet: Turbo-Hyra-Transmission (left out the 'd'). You know they had to be unhappy about that slipping through, but it's the little quirks like that in these history-making artifacts that endear this era to us all that much more!

    Oh wow, that sets my heart on fire. I had a 1968 Z in British green with the rally sport option when I was in the Navy in 1972-73, had the 4 gauge console package and tach in the dash in the right pod next to the speedo. The tires of the day made that car a nightmare on wet roads but what a fun ride. I impressed many people with rides in it. I knew I made a mistake the day I sold it and watched it go down the road. 7 grand rpm easily obtained. 2800 rpm at 55 mph in high gear, it saw 6500 rpm between Richmond and Norfolk several times, late moonlit night and that thing would almost fly! My heart races every time I see one these days.

      Rick I can relate to your story. My buddy," Frenchie" traded his 67 GTX 440, 4spd. For 68 Z/28 British Racing Green RS, w/Black Vinyl Top & Black Deluxe Interior. It also had the White Z/ strips. I had the pleasure of Drag Racing it against a 68 RS/SS BIG BLOCK. Although it was out on a marked off Quarter Mile east of Baker,Mt. 1968 was a great year for me as a 19 year old guy. Needless to say the Big Block beat me. But what a great time I had . My buddy, Frenchie didn't mind me racing it. Fast forward 54 years, I've got both of those cars! Saddlery they need total restoration. I've had the RS/SS BIG BLOCK for 45 years with a few years it was owned by someone else. The 68 Z/28 I picked that up on a trade back in 1983. I traded a 69 Camaro for it. If it hadn't been Frenchie 's Z/28, I wouldn't have done it. As a body man had got it from Frenchie 's brother. I about cried & still do, when I think of how he modified it. So needless to say that it needs a major restoration. Man, sorry to be so long winded, but as I stated. I can sure relate to your story. I have both vehicles sitting in a shop. I've been trying to get my self mended, so I can try to do some work on them. Thank you for your time, if you finished my long winded story.

And he took real Excellent care of the car as well as to bring is back to original after racing the car ! Plus O my goodness them hide away head lights ! Plus the beautiful sounding small block Chevy 302 V8 engine ! Which go to show, people Ford wasn't the only one ,that could build a killer small block 302 high rev push rod V8 engine. Chevy had there's ! And the Chevy 302 V8 went under the radar for how potent that engine was and is ! But the nice part about this Camaro Lou is when you and the owner went for a test drive and he was going through the gears and hearing the manual transmission sounds and listen to that small V8 engine wow ! This is similar to my first car--a 1967 Camaro RS. Mine was powered by a 327 with four speed trans. The car was red, inside and out. Also with the custom interior package. In winter I had to disable the headlight doors because they didn't like to work at temperatures below 20 degrees F. In the spring, I reconnected the motors. The most troublesome aspect was by the car's second year the rear package shelf and the top of the back seat cushion turned black like a burnt marshmallow due to the Sun shining through the rear window. Otherwise, this style of Camaro is my favorite.

    Had one... close ratio 4 speed muncie tyranny. Built 302 by a speed shop in Ganiesvill Ga...4.11 rear positive.... not a lot of torque until you reached about 4000 rpm then you could color me gone with a 850 dual line Holley!
    Hooker headers and a T Hurst shifter. Speed shop said it had right at 600 hp.
    It got about 8 miles to a gallon cruising...6 or less romping on it...lol!

    Mr. Costabile, I'm wondering at what point does a car become classic, and what makes it a classic? My dad owned a 1973 LTD and what an ugly ass car that is. Another ugly ass car I can think of is the Dodge Dart Swinger, they can't be considered "classics", can they?

    • @loucostabile
      @loucostabile  4 года назад

      Hi SamuraiSamara 69, I believe a car is eligible for antique plates after it's 25 years old. Cars have an amazing way of looking better with age, so your Dad's ugly ass car, is probably not looking that bad now :-) Lou
