Even for a prodigy Sarah Chang was incredible a real force of nature and it's not cliche in this case. Julliard does not accept 5 year olds every day, or at age 8 many appear with Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic, playing Paganini's First Violin Concerto, and recorded this debut recital disc a year later. She is an undisputed phenomenon. We all know what Menuhin said about her around that age.

I did a little experiment hearing (without watching) different versions with different performances and violinists... this is without doubt the one I like the most! All the melody, intonation the force... After discovering who played this amazing concerto I watched Mrs. Chang performance ... how sweet are her eyes when she opens them.... a very contrasting expression for such an intense piece..... At some points I like more Vengerov's interpretations but overall this is the one for me!!!!

This was an amazing performance by an 11 year old prodigy. Even this knowledgeable audience was in awe because they clapped after her first movement, which, if you knew any better, they're not supposed to do. Sarah Chang is one of the greatest violinist of our time and delivers powerful, technical performances at the level of Heifetz.

      Charles K. Lee
Completely true although many trolls on RUclips try to ridicule her and other Musicians of the younger generation by continually putting them down compared to the old and often long dead greats of the past. I my self prefer her version of this epic Violin Concerto to any other version on YT, Heifetz included. Amazing performance as you say by an 11 year old young girl and often played with her eyes closed !! I cannot see or hear how this performance by the Young Sarah can be improved upon ? I have seen Sarah play live a few times and saw her play the Bruch violin concerto live in London 2012, the audience were stunned at how good she was, myself included and the applause at the end must have surely been heard miles away, Sarah Chang is an awesome Violinist and a nice lady as well who always takes time to meet her fans after her Concerts for autographs, photos and a chat.

I agree, although Sarah was only young , eg 11 years old at the time of this performance, to me this is the ultimate version of this emotional Violin Concerto. not to reasonable people who understand that Ms. Chang has a rare and incredible gift for music. it should be an inspiration for people to want to play a musical instrument so that they can experience the feeling of creating music. the idea that others would compare their musical abilities to Ms. Chang's is a sad way to look at the priceless gift that she possesses. the true value of art, musical or visual, is not decided by 'judges' at commercial events or critics who want to earn a dollar.

  • @lovemetu
    @lovemetu 10 лет назад +11

You can always expect a powerful performance with Sarah Chang and this is no exception. The young Sarah had copybook bowing whereas she has got a bit more wayward with her bowing action as she has got older, still amazing musician though. Some people reckon she was at her peak round 15 years old ? Perhaps its my ears, don't know, but I have listened to so many versions of this including the version by the great Heifetz. Personally though for myself, this is my favourite version of this famous Violin Concerto. I find Sarah Changs version so smooth, soothing, effortless and perfect in every way. Sarah also presses all the emotional buttons as she plays those parts perfectly eg for just one example 19.22 to 23.40 mins. I just cannot see how this particular part could be bettered by anyone and by a child of then 11 years old...mind blowing !! Heifetz on the other hand seems a bit of an old ''Stony faced performer'' that's Heifetz for you, quite emotionless at the best of times and sometimes for me, rather even a bit harsh and abrupt at times in his rendition of this Concerto, eg that's on the 1949 film version of this on RUclips. Obviously that's how some people like to hear this concerto played, not for me though ? By the look on his facein the film, its just another job for him to knock off, just another days work, just my perception and no doubt others will disagree, but everyone is entitled to their own opinions, Viva la difference !!

@@lazchapman584 I often feel the feeling at classical concerts that people REALLY want to go for e.g Clap and applaud in between movements...but do not want to be the FIRST one to do it !! Read below or click the link !! www.classicfm.com/discover-music/why-dont-we-clap-between-movements/
At a classical concert, you can’t guarantee that this display of enthusiasm won’t earn you a few tuts from other audience members.
But it hasn’t always been this way.
Like the music itself, classical concert etiquette has evolved over time. In the late 18th century, classical concerts were more like small aristocratic gatherings. Composers like Mozart actually expected people to talk during their concerts - and they enjoyed hearing spontaneous applause. Individual movements were even played all over again if they received a big enough reaction.
      Then, claques were born.
When classical concerts became public in the 19th century, organised groups of professional applauders called claques were often hired to applaud particular performers. Many composers strongly objected to them. Mahler even specified in the score of his Kindertotenlieder that its movements should not be interrupted by applause and he wasn’t alone. In 1842 at the debut of his ‘Scottish’ Symphony, Mendelssohn explicitly asked for it to be played without a break, to avoid any interruptions. Schumann did the same for his piano and cello concertos, as well as his Symphony No.4.
By the time recording equipment came around in the 20th century, applauding in between movements came to be heavily frowned upon.
People started to think that clapping between the movements of a symphony distracted from the unity of the piece, punctuating works with unnecessary noise on live CD recordings. Today, it’s still a bit of a faux-pas
People first wanted to leave the clapping until the end of the work so that audience members could listen to the music totally undisturbed, without the distraction of applause in between movements.
And although not a major one, clapping between movements is still considered a bit of a concert faux-pas today.
But many people in the industry disagree…
“Clapping does not bother me in the least,” says Marin Alsop, conductor of the Baltimore Symphony and São Paulo State Symphony. “When Beethoven pieces premiered, people would clap within the middle of the piece.”The only time I am disturbed by applause,” she tells The Independent, “is when it feels perfunctory or obligatory simply because something has concluded - for example at the end of a slow movement of a Mahler symphony.”
Chicago Symphony Orchestra bassoonist William Buchman agrees: “Unlike a lot of other forms of music, silence plays an important role in a lot of classical music.”
“The silence is as profound as some of the music, and when that silence is not allowed its space, you lose a lot of the emotional impact that the silence can otherwise generate.” (Chicago Tribune)
So, do we need to get more comfortable with silence?
Perhaps the answer to the problem is that we should get used to hearing the sound of silence.
But if you can’t help bursting into spontaneous applause after the epic crescendo at the end of the first movement of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 (and who could blame you!), ignore the disapproving tuts and go for it !!

For early genius like her, it is reasonable by 15 of age she already grasped the best of all common classical works. It would be hard to recite the best feeling upon them in the later years.

At the end of the performance she becomes the delightful ''Child'' again !! Just an unbelievable performance for a fully grown up adult virtuoso to perform like this yet alone for a little girl like she was at the time.

I used to enjoyed the classical music through Vynal records, so I didn't know her much. Several years ago, going to bed, I turned on radio to listen to FM classical channel(listening and sleeping is my habbit) , the violin concerto was played. It was greater than any other I had ever listened. I didn't sleep to the end to find out that it was Sarah Chang.
Lately, I installed internet and connect it my AV system and just saw her playing last night untill 3am. Real prodigy!!!!
What is next? Maybe I will go to her concert to sea the grown up Sarah.
I am sorry that I didn't see her when she was young but so lucky to see her Here

Also my favourite !! It is so wonderful and perfect that once I switch it on.........I am unable to turn it off until I have heard it in all its entirety !! I must have watched this and other videos of the young Sarah playing this over 100 times and NEVER tire of listening to it, complete magic ! Many say that her technique peaked around 15 years old, the present day Sarah bowing is not as textbook as when she was younger. Many say that Heifetz version of this Concerto is the best but I have listened to so many others and Sarah presses all my buttons as the best ever performance, Orchestra and conductor were also wonderful.

@Brian Seals So nice to see such a comment as yours thanking Sarah Chang for this performance of so many years ago when Sarah was only 11 years old. I think this performance is quite wonderful and I adore the violinist Sarah Chang, seen her play live and met her twice in person.

Everything to like and marvel at in this performance from the young Sarah Chang. What a miracle for a little girl of only 11 years old to be able to play as well as this !! Sarah never faltered or burnt out as many do and is still playing as well as ever now in her mid thirties.

Lovely performance from the young Sarah isn't it !
Currently the most views on RUclips for this violin concerto is the version done by the amazing Japanese violinist Sayako Shoji, which when I just checked it had a massive 5,381,086 views. So many different Violinists have videos of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto on YT. So many to choose from and mostly all wonderful viewing and listening which everone you choose !!
My personal favorite, well its so hard to choose, for myself I love the way that Hyun Su Shin of South Korea plays the third movement so beautifully, for the whole Concerto its a joint first between the young Sarah and Sayako Shoji, so I would have to give my vote to Sarah Chang on the grounds that she was only 11 years old when she performed this Concert.

Teguh Aditanoyo I have just seen your comment placed a month ago, well I hope this information helps you. I cannot find out the actual makers name of her 1/4 size violin in this performance but have read that her mentor at Juilliard , the legendary Dorothy DeLay, gave Chang the three-quarter size violin which she found it in her attic, where it had been lying for 45 years.' When Sarah was 14 years old it was decided that she was old enough to move up to a full sized Violin and after trying out many with Isaac Stern, she chose the ex Isaac Stern full size 1717 Guarneri del Gesu . Sarah is quoted as saying ...... ''When I was 14 or 15, I was using a three-quarter-size violin and ready to finally switch to full-size''
