Ok, I don't think I've ever left feedback on a forum like this, but if this doesn't merit the time, I don't know what does. I, too, had a crappy contractor do a crappy job installing what was supposed to be black grout in my shower. He was in such a hurry, that the grout turned out to be varied shades of dull gray with an occasional bit of black, depending on how many times he washed over an area with his sponge. A full-on disaster. I struggled with deciding to try this for months and finally jumped in. Your video is perfect, and results perfect. It absolutely works and I now have a consistent colored back grout on my shower walls. It is night and day to what I was left with originally. I wish I could now figure out how to copy and paste a photo of it here, I'm that proud of it. :) Thanks, Chris. You made me love my renovated bathroom, instead of being embarrassed by it.
Oh wow! I wish you could post a pic too. Although not e turkey my contractors fault..just the damn grout..we are having the same issue..I’m nervous for it to be dyed, but also don’t want to live with something I don’t love.
hey guys just an update it's holding up great, no issues! Haven't had to reapply to the whole floor or anything. There has been a 1 cm nick here and there that rubbed off and I just touched up those spots about 2 weeks ago ...literally maybe 4 or 5 of those kind of spots in my whole house in the last 2 years so I'd say that's pretty good!
What brand did you use for shine? I have the exact problem with my grout we did ourselves a week ago. We did wait 24 hours before starting grout. The company claims its from using too much water, and it's a very common. Thanks for your video since my floor looks almost the same. I'm going to try to paint if I can find a matching color since the one that is the same name as the grout is a lot lighter. I will hopefully save money this way as to replace the grout was going to be about a grand.
@@helengonzales2644 yea this stuff is amazing and kept us from having to regrout as well. We used TileLab Gloss Sealer / Tile Finisher. The wood look tile had a dusty look to it since it was matte so we wanted a little slight gloss on there. One coat of that sealer mopped (with a cheap sponge dollar store mop and paint tray) on gave it a semi gloss look that was just right. (more coats would make it extra glossy for anyone that wants that)
I have a matte wood like porcelain tile. How did you add the shine and did you do it after dying the grout? I’d be nervous to ruin the floor..how did you apply?
@@Fran-jq1rq yes mine was matte too. We used TileLab Gloss Sealer / Tile Finisher in the brown bottle. Not sure if they still make it, all I see is the white bottle now so not sure if it's different. It held up great, but depends if your tile is porous or not, it's not recommended for some tiles. We did apply it after we colored the grout to help seal it in, it's holding up great!
I did a bathroom where we had a few tiles replaced. The new grout didn't match so I gave this product a shot. I am very happy with the results. It looks very natural. A few suggestions: 1)Make sure the floor is clean and there is no loose grout 2) use an artist brush and try and keep most of the colorant on the grout. A little can go on the tile but too much and the job can get messy. 3) Give it enough time to dry before misting the area and wiping it down. 4) Use a scrubbing sponge. The rough side makes it easier to remove any paint from the tile. 5) As your sponging it off have paper towels handy to wipe up any pieces of debris. I also had a bucket with warm water and a small towel I used in the wipe down process. Keep rinsing the sponge, rag and get clean water too. 6) I found that making sure the area was wet when wiping it down made the job much easier. The key is wipe in a sweeping motion, not scrubbing back and forth. You want enough pressure to take any excess paint off the tile but not the grout. 6) if you happen to remove some of the colorant from the grout, its no big deal. Dry the area, touch it up and once it dries you'll never know. 7) Once your done, allow 2 hours for foot traffic and 24 hrs before placing water on the colored grout. 7) If your going from Dark grout to a lighter shade, you may need a second coat. I went from a dark brown to a camel color and one coat is looking to be sufficient. I hope some of these tips help. Good luck 😊
I'm doing this right now. We waited a weekend before grouting and our dark brown turned out gray also. Thanks for your video and I'm glad it didn't just happen to us. We're at a loss as to why this happened, ourselves.
Ive watched many of grout refresh videos after buying it 6 months ago. You have the best video. Very detailed and honest. Your floors looked like night and day after you were finished. Turned out beautiful. I think I'm finally ready for this project on my shower tile😀❤
Just got this product for a new tile floor my husband just did in our entryway. We chose a beautiful slate tile and wanted a grout color that blended in with it…We think lowes had our grout bag mislabeled, bc the grout turned out WAY lighter than the sample, almost white, and we both absolutely hate it. This product is our only saving grace!!
Wow this video is exactly what I need. I just had my basement done, exact same wood tile as yours... the tile guys asked me what color grout I want.. I told them "I want it to look like a natural hardwood floor, use a grout color of your choice, at your discretion".... So instead of that, these idiots used a bright white grout... now I have to re-do the whole grout. but I guess it's better than re-grouting. thanks for the video, glad there's a solution.
Unbelievable. I look up a “how to grout stain” video and its one of the best jazz sax players I’ve ever seen live. Forget the grout stain guys, look this guy up on Spotify.
Damn man same happened to my project I bough Navajo brown grout and when they where done and it was all dry the grout looked more bone white . I have 790 square feet to color now . Great video much appreciated
Thank you! That video was exactly what I needed. They sell this product at my local Lowes and I was worried that it wouldn't go too far and your demonstration makes it seem well worth it.
I have used this product several times. I used an old toothbrush to apply the colorant. Waited 30 minutes and rubbed off excess on the tile face with mild scratch pad. The soged excess off. Works great. I also used it in a shower putting white over brown about 2 years ago. Shower is used 3-4 times a day and no sealer was used. Still looks great. If it discolors, I will just color it again. You don't need to go crazy sealing this stuff or worrying about putting too much on the tile face unless the tile is not glazed. Every time I have used it, people think it is new tile. I used it in flips and it sure beats redoing ugly old tile.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate knowing that I don't have to wipe it off RIGHT away. The 5 min recommended on the bottle stressed me out, lol. I can't paint that fast!! Your results look lovely!
I think you do! I tried this and couldn’t believe how fast it dried and got on my wood floor. Krud Kutter took it off. I already got my tiny paintbrush out!
Thanks a million for your video. In France, it is a pity Mapei do no longer sell this grout refresh in colors suitable for a wooden floor. They only provide colours from white to black, and different shades of grey.
@@Fran-jq1rq yes, :) the area I did is in our entry way and it is still still holding up. We have tiny tiles so it was a lot of work 😆but I'm happy with the results.
For future reference, use heavy duty tile and grout cleaner to remove grime from the grout, then was the grout with phosphoric acid to pore up the grout. Rinse with water then apply the colorant
Thanks for watching. Hopefully I never have to do this again, but yes mine was cleaned thoroughly prior to application. 4 years later still looks great 💪
I don’t know what I’m doing wrong, when I go to wipe away the excess color, it wipes out the grout colorant and I’m left with very splotchy grout… I’m usually pretty good with home diy and repairs. Any suggestions anyone?!
@@OliviaMalin89 depends on if it’s a kitchen tile area, or shower, and also the product doesn’t work on non sanded grout. But if it won’t stick like you’re saying try cleaning with heavy duty tile and grout cleaner and a metal wire brush
Your video helped a lot. Our contractor used a lighter grout than we picked and ruined the wood look of our wood look tile. He did offer to fix it but I didn’t trust them to do a good job. My main problem with this product is that my bottle top has started clogging. I had to put a needle through the hole of the top to unclog. Did you have this problem? Is there a way to avoid it? Thanks for the video!!!😊
Thanks, glad this was helpful. I found that on one of my bottles the little lid topper didn't fit very well and I ended up just plugging the hole with a thick nail. That seemed to work better for that bottle. I still have it actually and occasionally use the left overs to touch up some of our wood furniture lol.
My handyman spilled bright teal paint on my tile floor. I was able to get the paint off the tile, but not the grout. I just found the Mapei Refresh at Lowe's. Do you think I could color-seal with Refresh on just the affected grout lines and hope that it blends in or would I have to apply Refresh to the entire floor? Great video BTW, thank you!
the Refresh should definitely cover up the paint no problem. As to weather it's a perfect match and will blend without having to do all of it is something I can't answer. You won't know til you try. If it is a perfect match to your grout color then I'd say it shouldn't be a problem, but won't know til it dried, but it's definitely worth a shot!
@@ChrisGodbersax Success with Mapei Refresh! I took a stab at the color with one that Lowe's carried (Biscuit) and only used it on the stained grout lines - and it blended well. Thank you again for your great video.
Do you think it will work on black, and light grey to even out the color? My grout in some places is black, and others charcoal grey-! Also the moisture coming through the grout, effervescence white stuff coming up from moisture, with this seal that off?
yes if you're trying to make the grey parts black then you can get black grout renew and even that out. Or vice versa. Then user a sealer afterwards and hopefully that will help with your moisture issue.
@@rebeccahollar6821Sorry, with what you said about moisture I thought maybe you were using it in a shower. Yes it does have a sealer built in, but if you're still having issues with moisture seeping through you may need a 2nd coat or a top coat sealer. If it is in a shower I would still put an additional sealer on top when you're all done and have the color the way you want it; for an extra layer of protection.
@@ChrisGodbersax omg yes. I will be doing that. My subway tile is white, white grout. Cabinets are a light gray and the handles are black so the black grout will make that backsplash look fantastic. Thank you!
yes if it's been sealed you should strip any sealant first so it can bond better by using a dedicated grout cleaner / stripper. Think of it like cleaning a surface with alcohol before applying an adhesive. Otherwise it may not last
I moved 2 years ago, but at the 3 year mark it still looked like the day I put it down even after mopping 2x week with vinegar and swiffers. Highly recommend
yes. If you have white grout and you're trying to make it a darker color, this will work. if you have dark grout and are trying to make it white, it will likely also work, but may need more than one coat.
You may not have a big enough tip opening, you can cut the tip off to make it wider. I lost the cap to mine and ended up putting a nail in it so it didn't dry out, this widened the tip a good bit as well for easier flow. Make sure to shake it well before using and every few minutes while you're using it so that it doesn't settle.
Help 😱 I had a new black pebble floor installed in my new shower and I chose a color that’s too light. It needs to be a darker grey, not the light grey I chose. My tile guy said he will have to remove the floor and start again. It has only been down 2 days and it’s sealed with 511. Will this method let me put a darker grey over this new black pebble tile even though it’s newly put down AND sealed? He used the 511 Enhancer and Sealant yesterday over it. I’m almost freaked out over this 😢
oooh that's a tough one. Wish I could say with certainty, but all I can say is get some and try it in a section and see if it takes. If so, go for it and then seal it really well!
Thanks for this very helpful video. We have chosen the KUNI BS wood style tiling from IMOLA but the craftsman did not follow our recommandation and used a light grey colour to grout the tiles. Therefore the effet of wood is ruined. In France, Mapei do not sell this grout refresh in colours other than black, white or 4 different shades of Grey. In Italy, they still sell 34 shades of colors but I do not know which one to choose for my tiling. I would not like to make things worse that what they are.
If someone used a product like this (grout stain/paint) on a bathroom floor with 12" x 12" porcelain or ceramic tile, would the grout stain/ paint wear off sooner than desired if moping the floor with a product like mr klean?
If you seal it well I don't think it will be a problem. We used straight undiluted white vinegar to clean our floors for 4 years (due to small kids) and the occasional swiffer without issues.
I'm a tile installer and I have to say this did not happen from your installer grouting same day. What happened was your installer washed the color out of the grout! I have grouted same day multiple times and I have never had that problem.... the read why your grout turned gray is because when they washed the grout they either mixed with too much water or they didn't ring out their sponge enough
Not only that. I don’t believe that was grouted on the same day. No way José. This wasn’t a bathroom or a dinning room floor. By the sounds of it, it was most of his first floor.
it's been great, no issues!
Question; can I add paint to the white Grout Refresh I bought? I have light grey tiles (already in the home I bought) and the white is very white! Someone mentioned using a grey grout color.
no, it's an all in one product. However, if I was putting this in a shower I would go over it with a standalone sealer just to be safe. Since this was on regular (non wet tile) I just left it with the built in sealer and it's done fine even with years of mopping.

Hi I am dealing with a similar issue. Our bathroom tiles that were jusst installed look similar to yours and although we chose a dark brown grout it turned light grey when it dried and looks horrible. In any case, I am planning to paint it with the grout colorant but was wondering if you knew how long I have to wait before I do this since the grout was just installed a few days ago? I could only find one answer online to this question which suggested that I had to wait a month before coloring the grout.
hey thanks for your comment. No, you don't have to wait. We waited a week when I did this only because the tile guys claimed it would get darker if we waited, but that was not the case so we went right ahead and put it on as we were trying to move back into our house and this was the last thing keeping us from putting our furniture back in the house (post hurricane) It's been over a year now and still holding up great! We did put a clear sealer over it which has probably helped it hold up to mopping. Best of luck!
it is very tedious indeed, however, the results were exactly what I needed and it has stayed the last 3 years. There may be other products out there to get your desired results, but this is what I used so this is all I can vouch for, sorry 🤷♂️
It was made by Mohawk, but this particular color has been discontinued. That's the thing with tile unfortunately, they often discontinue certain colors after a few years as I found out when remodeling our [new to us] home we just moved into the last 2 months. I wanted to put this same tile in it, but found out it was no longer made. Brought a sample around and found Florida Tile "Berkshire / Olive" to be very very close so that's what we went with ultimately.
I dont know what i did wrong, but after i wiped them off none of them stick to my shower’s grout😭 i didnt think of a brush so it’s even worse that the grout color that go out of the line stayed but not on the actual grout. Now i have an ugly shower grout still bonus some botched grout paint that’s still there. Do u know how to remove them? I dont know if i want to try it again as i messed it up the first time
did you clean the grout first? What did you apply it with if you didn't use a brush? As far as getting the excess off, I had to rub mine off the edges of the tile since painters tape wouldn't stick. 🤷♂
Great video. I see it’s 3 years old. How did the grout refresh hold up? I have same issues with my grout being too light, but my installer is going to dye it for me. I am curious how it holds up in high traffic areas and if it starts fading and becoming uneven. I’d love you to let me know and lost a recent pic of the floor.
no, you would have to really want this stuff off to get it off by scraping the grout with perhaps a wire brush. It's held up to 2+ years of mopping so far so good!
This is the same thing that happened to us, our grout was dark gray but when the tile guy was done it came out a super light gray not even throughout either. Will this work for a shower?
@@ChrisGodbersax Thanks for the reply and your video. I talked with two tile guys, one wanted over $400 to redo the grout and the other said not to redo the grout because it could damage the Sheetrock and green board under it. This however seems like a perfect alternative, hopefully it will work out. Have a great holiday!
Thanks for posting this. I sealed my grout in my bathroom. Was your grout sealed or do you know if it'll cover sealed grout? If I have to etch the grout I might as well regrout which is a dust storm no matter how careful we are.
my grout was brand new, they had just laid the tile and grouted same day even though I told them not to because I was worried the grout color would be effected by not letting the thinset dry / harden completely. (I picked out dark brown grout....which as you saw did not come out dark brown) Anyway, it was fresh and not sealed. I did seal it after we used the grout renew, however. Unless you've recently sealed your grout I think it would be fine to do this. Just clean it well first and then use the grout renew, then seal it a day or so after to lock it in.
Thanks for sharing. I did a grout job on a bathroom project and the mapei grout lightened a ton. I'm not sure what happened as I followed the mixing ratio on the bag. Oh well--at least this product exists and I can salvage my project with some extra elbow grease.
Absolutely, it grout colors can be very strange, they do lighten up and how much depends on how you hold your tongue when you do it lol. Hopefully this will help you get it the color you actually wanted! :)
Not the grout’s fault. You used too much water when cleaning it and it washed out the pigment. Mapei grout is fantastic to work with compared to many others.
not sure, I haven't had to do it yet :) If you see it rubbing off in small areas just do touch ups if it's not all coming off. I put a sealer down afterwards and it's held up even to rigorous mopping with vinegar!
What kind of tile is that? Looks like the lifeproof porcelain wood look. I am having a similar issue, are you painting over regular cement based grout? Also does the finished product look shiny like paint or does it still have the texture and matte look of cement based grout? I am worried that using this will make the grout lines look shiny whereas the tile has more of a matte look.
correct it is porcelain wood look tile. Yes this product is going over the regular cement based grout. Mine did not have a gloss to it, it was flat / matte when it dried. However, I went over the whole tile and grout with a semi gloss sealant to lock it all in as the wood look tile had a dusty look to it without a bit of shine on it. hope that helps :)
@@ChrisGodbersax Thanks we are in the same boat. What size paint brush did you use to apply the grout stain? Also which sealer did you use, because my Lifeproof tiles say that sealing is not recommended but I agree that they have that dusty look to them and I wanted to give them a bit more shine. Thanks for your reply.
@@Jallelab99141 My wife does a lot of arts and crafts and so I just used some 1/4" brushes she already had (wore out a few on this) The sealer we used was made by tilelab gloss tile sealer. To apply we just put it in a paint tray and mopped it onto the tile with a dollar store sponge mop. Put on one light coat for semi gloss and let it dry for an hour or so. (Put on even coats as it dries fast and if you go back over it it will make those areas streaky / shiny) One coat will be a semi gloss which was just what we were after, the more coats will bring it to a true gloss so put it on and see what you think before adding it too thick. We got it at homedepot I believe but walmart also lists it online here so you can see a photo of it: www.walmart.com/ip/Custom-Building-Products-TILELab-Gloss-Tile-Sealer-Finish/26957989?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=18166&adid=22222222227020246544&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=51806082191&wl4=aud-430887228898:pla-63704445571&wl5=9011660&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=125198187&wl11=online&wl12=26957989&veh=sem&gclid=Cj0KCQjwmpb0BRCBARIsAG7y4zY70NUYgifAFBYzcxzVQbKVMAUpztaga1K4PkJEtrJons4NltJEsl4aAjuNEALw_wcB

Thanks for the upload! I'm about to do my foyer and this was SUPER helpful. Would you advise cleaning grout about 24hrs before applying this? My grout is looking pretty nasty and was wondering is cleaning it first and waiting 24hrs for it to dry would be best for a good seal? Edit: your floors look great by the way, nice job!
yes, not so much for cosmetics, but I'd definitely advise cleaning it first to remove any dirt that would prevent it from adhering well. My grout was brand new, but I did clean it to remove any of the chalky grout dust that may have been on it.
I just did my bathroom shower with black grout and it turned grey for some reason. Planning to get this. Can this be applied after one day and how soon can I apply sealer after I use this product so I can lock it in?
We gave it a week before we put the grout stain due to how long it took to find this, but really as long as it's been more than 24 hours you're probably fine. It dries quick, but I'd give it a day before putting a sealer on it, then you should be good to go.
Great info. Just finished our grouting today. We have an almost identical tile and grout look as yours, not intended. Grout was supposed to be charcoal......not even close. Nice to see your results and are hoping for the same. How long did you wait between recoloring your grout and applying the sealer? Thanks
We waited 2 weeks to do the Grout Renew, only because our tile people assured us it would get darker in a week or two...which of course was bogus. So we did the grout renew over about 2 days (to do the whole house) and then we mopped on the sealer the next day. We used TileLab Gloss Sealer / Tile Finisher. The wood like tile had a dusty look to it since it was matte so we wanted a little slight gloss on there. One coat of that sealer mopped (with a cheap sponge dollar store mop and paint tray) on gave it a semi gloss look that was just right. Did you use grout refresh? Wow, mapei I grout is what we used too..so much lighter than the sample..I mean just so unbelievably different I am so aggravated. My installer said it would darken too..it’s only been 3 days, but I told him it will never darken as much as we want. I am not waiting I just want them to take care of it NOW.
Interesting. Thanks. Any thoughts on if you'd use this on shower walls and floor? My daughter's contractor used wrong color grout for shower walls and floor and when she complained, they used this stuff to "fix" it. She's furious. Picture painting dark gray lines over light gray against white subway tile. You can see every non perfect line. Plus, I have no confidence it'll hold up in a wet environment that will be wiped often.
yes this should still work for your situation. However, I would definitely use a sealer on it afterwards to help lock it in. October 2021 will be 3 years since we put ours down and it's held up well even mopping with vinegar regularly so I'd think this would stand up to shower abuse if you go over it with a sealer.
Hi Chris, thanks for the great video. Does this still look like grout after you use it or more like paint? Sounds like it is still holding up for you after 2-3 years?
yes it still looks like grout and is grout, it's just stained the correct color after using this. The texture and feeling of the grout will be the same. And yes 3 years now and still looks great, no issues.

I did a bathroom where we had a few tiles replaced. The new grout didn't match so I gave this product a shot. I am very happy with the results. It looks very natural. A few suggestions:
1)Make sure the floor is clean and there is no loose grout
2) use an artist brush and try and keep most of the colorant on the grout.

@@maryannsy4129 absolutely, glad to hear it! 💪
Thank you for such a great and simple video
I really appreciate you
Just got this product for a new tile floor my husband just did in our entryway. We chose a beautiful slate tile and wanted a grout color that blended in with it…We think lowes had our grout bag mislabeled, bc the grout turned out WAY lighter than the sample, almost white, and we both absolutely hate it. This product is our only saving grace!!
Thanks for posting. I found using a toothbrush instead of paint brush easier to use. NICE JOB!
awesome glad this was helpful
Wow this video is exactly what I need. I just had my basement done, exact same wood tile as yours... the tile guys asked me what color grout I want.. I told them "I want it to look like a natural hardwood floor, use a grout color of your choice, at your discretion".... So instead of that, these idiots used a bright white grout... now I have to re-do the whole grout. but I guess it's better than re-grouting. thanks for the video, glad there's a solution.
So how did it turn out?
Unbelievable. I look up a “how to grout stain” video and its one of the best jazz sax players I’ve ever seen live. Forget the grout stain guys, look this guy up on Spotify.
haha Thanks Alex, you're too kind ;)
@@ChrisGodbersax Holy s***! Looked you up on spotify - smooth!

Nice! Ahhh, those "professionals". Creating extra work for homeowners!
haha I know right!?
Damn man same happened to my project I bough Navajo brown grout and when they where done and it was all dry the grout looked more bone white . I have 790 square feet to color now . Great video much appreciated
So how did it turn out?
Thank you! That video was exactly what I needed. They sell this product at my local Lowes and I was worried that it wouldn't go too far and your demonstration makes it seem well worth it.
Thank you! Just bought this for my bathroom and wasn’t sure how to use it - so your video really helped.
hey glad to help!

What a difference! Love the floors and the grout looks great now! I'm excited to try my tile floors now.
Has it held up good in high traffic areas?
Have you ever had to reapply to touch up any areas, and if so do the touch ups blend in seamlessly?
It is a sealer, so when you use it, you are sealing your grout.
Hi what products you u use to clean the floor after applying this? So over time, these don't peal away..can I use normal tile cleaner?
Thank you! Very helpful
Better demonstration video then Mapei out out themselves.
I agree. Their videos and instructions on containers are very vague
Thanks a million for your video. In France, it is a pity Mapei do no longer sell this grout refresh in colors suitable for a wooden floor. They only provide colours from white to black, and different shades of grey.
This was helpful, thanks for sharing. I have now begun my own project using this product.
Were you happy with the results?
@@Fran-jq1rq yes, :) the area I did is in our entry way and it is still still holding up. We have tiny tiles so it was a lot of work 😆but I'm happy with the results.
Thanks for making the video. About to use the same product in white in our bathrooms.
Awesome, it made such a difference for our floors!
nicely done! getting it now!
you should have sent the tile guys a bill for your work they didn't do right the first time!
@@5thpixel I kind of did, didn't pay them their remaining balance
Awesome video, thanks!
4 years later still looks great 💪
@@ChrisGodbersax yeah this stuff is amazing!
Wow that's amazing the difference
Perfect explanation! Thanks for the video!
White looks clean
I've seen other videos where they applied the colorant with a toothbrush which seem to make it much faster.
Definitely give it a try for sure, if it works, it works 🤷♂
How did the Grout Refresh stand up over time?
I recently moved, but the 4 years I lived there after applying it held up great without issue!
Great video. Question: Can you apply this product on top of sealed grout?
I'm sure you can, but I would seal over this again afterwards just help with longevity
Thank you
My handyman spilled bright teal paint on my tile floor.
Awesome job man! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for that. I made a mosaic and chose the wrong grout my mosaic disappeared. This will help me restore it.
Thank you!
@@ChrisGodbersaxI thought this had a built in sealer?
@@rebeccahollar6821Sorry, with what you said about moisture I thought maybe you were using it in a shower. Yes it does have a sealer built in, but if you're still having issues with moisture seeping through you may need a 2nd coat or a top coat sealer. If it is in a shower I would still put an additional sealer on top when you're all done and have the color the way you want it; for an extra layer of protection.
I had the same issue. Thank you for sharing!!!
Goodness -- you did your whole house. I did one kitchen and was tired.
Can I change my grout from white to black with this stuff? That’s the purpose correct?
absolutely!
@@ChrisGodbersax omg yes. I will be doing that. My subway tile is white, white grout.
Cabinets are a light gray and the handles are black so the black grout will make that backsplash look fantastic. Thank you!
I just ordered this for my shower.
Are you able to use that stuff on grout that has already been sealed? Or do I strip the sealant somehow before using the colorant?
yes if it's been sealed you should strip any sealant first so it can bond better by using a dedicated grout cleaner / stripper. Think of it like cleaning a surface with alcohol before applying an adhesive. Otherwise it may not last
Its been 5 years since this. How long did it last ???
I moved 2 years ago, but at the 3 year mark it still looked like the day I put it down even after mopping 2x week with vinegar and swiffers. Highly recommend
Thank you!!
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
Does this work with white grout?
yes. If you have white grout and you're trying to make it a darker color, this will work. if you have dark grout and are trying to make it white, it will likely also work, but may need more than one coat.
My bottle kept clogging up....what did you do to make it run smooth like mustard? please hurry...thx
@@ChrisGodbersaxthanks Chris. I’ve got little to lose at this point…
I understand your frustration. We went with the "Truffle" color, it works well with a lot of wood style tiles. Hope that helps
I love both💙
My grout lines look the same as yours . They were dark brown but are now white with wet drywall dust caked in them .
Can You Let me know how its holding up? Thanks for the UPDATE!!!
it's been great, no issues!
This was so helpful, thank you!!!
Question; can I add paint to the white Grout Refresh I bought? I have light grey tiles (already in the home I bought) and the white is very white! Someone mentioned using a grey grout color.
You may be able to add a dye to it, but not paint.
@@ChrisGodbersax Thank you!!!
Did you use a sealer after you applied this? TIA
no, it's an all in one product. However, if I was putting this in a shower I would go over it with a standalone sealer just to be safe. Since this was on regular (non wet tile) I just left it with the built in sealer and it's done fine even with years of mopping.
@ChrisGodbersax thank you sir!

I have marble tile, in an arabesque pattern. Could be very tedious. Am I better off using a pen?
it is very tedious indeed, however, the results were exactly what I needed and it has stayed the last 3 years. There may be other products out there to get your desired results, but this is what I used so this is all I can vouch for, sorry 🤷♂️
Just came across your video! What flooring is this? Trying to find a wood look tile for my home!
I’d love you to let me know and lost a recent pic of the floor.
it's held up great. Just sold the house last month so can't get you a recent pic, but it still looked the same as the day we put it down, no issues.
Very helpful - thank you!
Tx for the video. If it removable by water- after using grout refresh- how do you clean the floor? Does it get removed by mopping or wet cleaning? Tx
no, you would have to really want this stuff off to get it off by scraping the grout with perhaps a wire brush. It's held up to 2+ years of mopping so far so good!
Would you recommend for shower grout? Since it is water-based I want to be sure it won't "wash" off.
absolutely but I would definitely go over it with an additional sealer of some sort to lock it in since it will be abused by water daily
Thanks!
Thanks for your video! Do you think this grout stainer will stand to use in the shower?
I was thinking of just using a wood stain and sealer all in one.
This is the same thing that happened to us, our grout was dark gray but when the tile guy was done it came out a super light gray not even throughout either. Will this work for a shower?
yes it'll work on a shower, but I'd definitely use a sealer on it after.
Yes! Really helped!
Yes, same problem here.... Terrible grout to work with
Not the grout’s fault. You used too much water when cleaning it and it washed out the pigment. Mapei grout is fantastic to work with compared to many others.
thanks great vid, so how long does it last till u hav2reapply?
not sure, I haven't had to do it yet :) If you see it rubbing off in small areas just do touch ups if it's not all coming off. I put a sealer down afterwards and it's held up even to rigorous mopping with vinegar!
Hey for once I have found a saxophonist that really cares for his fans I hope the building and the house finish and looks great
Awe, thank you so much! Yes, it's coming along nicely, getting new furniture and sprucing up one room at a time haha.
Chris Godber ya I hope that one day I can meet you
What kind of tile is that?

Hello, can you please let me know the updated of the stain? I’m debating stain or regrout
about 3 years now, no issues, looks as good as the day we did it :)
Great instructions thank u 🙏 I just picked up 4 bottles order from local tile store, #14 Biscuit Bizcocho to go over grey grout on beige tile.
awesome, glad this was helpful for you!
How long after would you seal it?
I'd wait 24 hours.
(more coats would make it extra glossy for anyone that wants that)
Same problem, used mapei..never again...
Did you use grout refresh? How did it turn out, and has it held up? Any pics to share?
Did you use grout refresh? Wow, mapei I grout is what we used too..so much lighter than the sample..I mean just so unbelievably different I am so aggravated. My installer said it would darken too..it’s only been 3 days, but I told him it will never darken as much as we want. I am not waiting I just want them to take care of it NOW.
Love it
Interesting.
Thanks so much!
What shade of mapei grout color did you use? Was considering using a brown permanent marker before I saw this video. Thanks!
I used "Truffle" here it is amzn.to/3hlL639
Very interesting.
What size are your grout lines?
they were supposed to be 1/8" but they didn't get that right either. They're standard size, around 3/16"
What did you do to clean/prep the grout before application? Thanks!
mopped it with vinegar several times. It was brand new grout so it wasn't dirty, but wanted to remove all the chalky dust
After you glossed the tile, have you noticed any issues such as scratches? Would it protect the tile from scuffs?
So far so good, no scratches. I'd like to think the gloss sealer does help protect it.
Can you pls tell me what color tile you have? It looks a lot like ours and want to see if this grout color would work for our tile, thanks!
Hazelnut Spice by Mohawk
So, you put a sealant on even though this says “colorant and sealer”. Is it necessary to seal separately or did you do it mainly for your tile?
Yes I did it for aesthetics as my woodlook tile had a dusty kind of look to it and the gloss sealer eliminated that. You don't have to do it
@@ChrisGodbersax 👍🏻 Thanks!
