Lyrics:
Can you surry, can you picnic, whoa?
Can you surry, can you picnic?
Come on, come on and surry down to a stoned soul picnic
Surry down to a stoned soul picnic
There'll be lots of time and wine
Red yellow honey, sassafras and moonshine
Red yellow honey, sassafras and moonshine
Stoned soul, stoned soul, whoa

My mother had this album and I can remember her playing it on the record player 😂 who out there in cyber land can relate???
we had the 8 track cartridge....I love the 5th dimension...feel good music. Where did the time go?!
@@MsBpelletierYes - really is 'feel good' music. I woke up recently and thought I can't be as old as that - must be a dream!
I was also that mother. I did my housework to music to keep me sane.
I'm 63. Another great harmonizing group from the 70's! Takes me back to my younger years when life was more carefree and not filled with all the technology today to get distracted by.
Exactly..we listened to all kinds of music...our house was always playing something on the record player...even had the 45's.. my older brother would pick on my music...I just ignored him...lots of stuff..as a preteen..didn't Exactly understand..just liked the beat of songs..😂
He is 71..I am 67..younger brother is 65
My husband is 69 and still has all of his albums.
It wouldn't be summer without The Fifth Dimension
Thank you, Laura Nyro.
Was a 19 year old trooper in Nam when this came out. Keep us focus on getting the mission done and go back to the world.

The whole decade 1965-1975 was a pretty amazing time to appreciate quality music and performances.
The perfect theme of the Hippie Era.
I was born in 62 , remember hearing this on AM radio! Omg luv this song & band ! I'm Caucasian , always lived Motown & soul music ! ❤😊
I miss my parents, and my grandparents they had the greatest family picnics.
The sweet summer of the year 1968 swimming boating fishing hanging out with friends and picnics
I'm with you......on my way to my first year of college in the fall.......this song is what help make the summer of 1968 so GREAT :)
✌🏾☮️😊😌
This music will never die...🍄🍄🍄
😂I was 18 when this came out
Thank you, Wreaking Crew.❤
Absolutely !!!
Red yellow honey,sassafrass and moonshine
This takes me back to 7 years old at Covenant Baptist Church's Summer Camp!🎵🎶🎶🎶🎶🥰🥰
Great times!
One of the great harmonizing groups of the 70's Sweet Soul...
Brings back good childhood memories when music was music.
1968 was such a magical year for music, and this is a magical song.
Yes it is! I remember it well. Loved to dance to it at house parties.
Yay
I agree with you 100%;1968 was my Senior Year in high school .........55 years ago and this song was part of the outstanding music that came out that year....
Same here, class of '68.@@motownfan3
@@Gumshrud1 The Class of '68.....WE CHANGED THE WORLD !!!
This was the first song I heard from the 5th Demension. It was the Summer of '68 and I was a young 10yr old boy and I've been a big fan of their music since. Marlyn and Florence are two FINE lookin' babes!!
Cool and yes the girls are beauties and fantastic voices!
The summer of 1968 had some wonderful music 😄
This song reminds me of being on a picnic in the summer and a lot of peoplre dancing and singing. What a beautiful arrangement!
This song takes me back when I was younger I'm 65 years old and still jamming out to this song
I’ll be 65 end of next month and still jammin to it as well 😎
Sweet!!
Great Song! Gotta give props to one Laura Nyro ("Eli's Coming", "And When I Die", "Wedding Bell Blues", & "Sweet Blindness" & this one, all penned by her).
Wrote them when she was like 18, 19 years old! Amazing songwriter.
You have good taste in music.....62 here and I still get chills from hearing "red-yellow honey & sassafras & moonshine..."
@@gilbertbronsal3007 I did not know this. Thank you for the information Gilbert.
As a child my father had a furniture store and got all these great albums to play on the stereos that he sold. The 5th dimension was one of them. Great memories!
Boy can this group harmonize!
Almost every group/personality in the late 60's had their "trip" song. 5th was no different. Loved them to death as a kid and still do as an adult!! RIP Ron Townsend . . .
❤❤UP❤UP❤and away❤with YOU❤me❤and OUR❤beautiful balloon!!!❤Baby!!!❤❤❤❤
This song takes me back when I was a kid. Love it
This is stone soul! The lyrics, harmony and orchestra! What a picnic!
And they're swingin' like a big dog!
My parents remember 😢this song that came out in the spring of 1968 at Music 🎵🎶 Radio 77 WABC AM when it hit the top 40 weekly countdown
This music I heard as I was babysat in the 1970s 😊love this
I miss the Stone Soul Picnics they used to have in Washington DC on the 4th of July. Everyone got along great. My friends and family really enjoyed themselves.
I was there in '79 and '80. Beach Boys and O'Jays, among others.
Last time I was there was 1972, DC's Golden Gate Park...turned down acid but drank in Brandy, yer a fine girl...then left to hitchhike to Australia. It was a stoned summer.
My absolute FAVORITE 5th Dimension song. I collect your records. I love you guys/gals. Such gorgeous voices and music. LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My second favorite. “Last Night…” is my first.😁
Joe Osborn''s bass sound on this track is nothing short of amazing.
Yeah, it has a bit more edge when he hits it hard... Sounds good
Absolutely!
Naturally 7 plus Mr. Smith equals pure magic. This version is off the hook, I love drummer, bass, the voices and stellar trumpet play. The Killer Joe reference was very smooth near the end also😊
Love it! Great times, great music!!! I remember when this song came out!
I remember listening to this song, and I can just smell the summer grass right now!
I should never read the comments under my childhood music, the music that I personally tuned in and listened to. It makes me feel ancient. Although others are also here reminiscing, it's stuff like, "I remember my grandparents had this on when they were making Sunday dinner."
This is a tune😊
The harmonies! Just seriously high grade talented stuff...and I just Loved Marilyn McCoo
Takes me back to those glorious timmes. Great group and beautiful song.
In approximately 1972-73 they played at the Hollywood bowl; they were the first concert I ever went to. Somebody didn’t want the tickets and they were only five bucks. Great memories l, so glad I got to see them!
❤❤❤ no words ❤❤
Beautiful
1968 Musical heavens opened up and poured out the most Devine music.
There just isn't anyone with this level of skill class and talent making music like this. So amazing.
Music at its finest!
You're right no one is even trying to come up with songs as good as the ones done by The Fifth Dimension
Go to daptone records they have some good artist the altons sacred souls e.t.c.
For the individual who wants to know what 'It' means...It means the many ways of getting stoned and have a good time at a Stone Soul Picnic.
It's that time of year around here. Can you Surry on down? I can.
I love these classic sony
Harmonies on point!
The harmonic ensemble of the right fit voices; these artists were birthed to saNG!!! As an aid to help in writing, "Elements of Style, thus, as such, The Fifth Dimemsion!!!!
still makes me cry lol LOVE IT
Why isn’t this group in the Hall of Fame????? Makes NO sense. They contributed greatly to the music scene of the 60’s and 70’s. 🤔🤔🤔
Good Question
I remember when Washington DC used to have the stoned soul picnics They used to be the best thing when Chuck Brown used to perform
huh?
I did not know this.
❤ amen
No school like the old School..Jamz..🎤🎼🖤❤️💚
Miss old days
I found this song while working on a project for college looking in texas's radio for some news clips. I fell in love with this sone. Before covid
Im 24 now
Tell me Mr Peabody & Sherman didn't teleport me back to 10 yrs old. I'm loving this long forgotten vibe. When music was music. Good sounds never get old they just stand the test of time. Thank 5th D.
@@StevenNewson-ye6rb i miss that show, it was weird for me but i was entertained by it
Florence and Marilyn have glorious singing voices
Laura nyro did a lot great songs and this was one of those of the songs
This is a great version, and if you've never heard Laura Nyro's version you need to!
The 5th Dimension loved “Stoned Soul Picnic” (1968), but were shocked to learn it was written by a Caucasian 20-year-old girl from New York City : Laura Nyro. After this became a smash, they recorded several other Nyro compositions.
Bones Howe became the group’s producer and introduced them to this tune. He explained : “Laura [Nyro] was a good friend and I used to visit her in New York whenever I was there […]. She was great and I was a huge fan and I recorded enough of her songs so that there could be a 5th Dimension album of all Laura Nyro songs. I believe she was really an important songwriter and brought poetry to her work that kept it from being just pop. BUT SHE WENT WHERE SHE WENT AND THE WORLD DIDN’T FOLLOW.”
The word “stoned” doesn’t always mean getting high on marijuana. In this piece, it refers to drinking alcohol and having a good time at a glorious picnic - Nyro mentions wine and moonshine in the lyrics as the beverages of choice‼️ 💜🎵💙
May you rest in peace, Laura Nyro (1947 - 1997)… 🌹
Passed away at the young age of 49. Still had a lot music in her
@@samkohen4589 Laura Nyro was a genius.

1968 the Greatest class of NFA (Newburgh, NY,) graduated and we had a ton of classics to dig and enjoy like this from the 5th Dimension, giving is a life time of sweet memories.

Washington DC!
The 5D covered 10 original song by the singing songwriting Bronx genius, Laura Nyro. Some others: Sweet Blindness (Nyro's tribute to Stevie Wonder), Wedding Bell Blues.
This is my favorite fifth dimension Song! I remember when I was like 7 this song was a hit on the radio. Ivdd add m 62 now
Can somebody tell me why they are not in the rock n roll hall of fame
I was 12 years old in Middle school when this came out! As kids we would dance and sing a long to this ❤
It's a shame that the fabulous composer, Laura Nyro, doesn't even merit a mention from the original poster.
Indeed. A huge oversight from the 5th Dimension official you tube page. But then they don't credit Burt Bacharach and Hal David for "one less bell to answer". Whoever is overlooking this site hasn't a clue.
Ahhh perhaps so, but I remember her talents and contributions well. THis song, Wedding Bell Blues, And When I Die, Eli's Comin', Stoney End (my fave Babs Streisand song).. her mark was deep and wide!
Interesting. Such a fun generation of music. I have a CD of Laura Nero ; ) That goes back......
Because the person who put this up is a real idiot
Fame is fleeting but writer credit checks are forever

Still love song from the past the made since then the music of today
I saw them play this song faster one time live. If you put the speed at 1.25, it almost replicates that version.
Wonderful happy song. I love it!
HAPPY EAT OUTSIDE DAY! AND HAPPY NATIONAL TRAIL MIX DAY! AND HAPPY INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY! AND HAPPY LOVE LITIGATING LAWYERS DAY! AND HAPPY NATIONAL DIATOMACEOUS EARTH DAY! AND HAPPY NATIONAL MATCHMAKER DAY!......wow......
Of course when you are that stoned you see and --- ----- and the Vikings...
What are they talking about? Red-Yellow Honey? Sassafras and Moonshine? I know those usually mean, and it is about getting stoned....
what does it mean?
@@keawequinones1230 Sassafras is Root Beer and Moonshine was, well, we will just say, outlawed during prohibition. Though, I knew someone who liked to drink Root Beer and Vodka.
I'm trippin' balls.
Check out Johnny Johnson & the bandwagon’s version ❤
I found out today the word ‘picnic’ is racist. Oh well….
I'm 68 yrs young , back in 77ish I was a couple yrs out of hi school my girl friend was still in school a senior we had just started dating . One warm sunny California evening we went on a double date w another couple to see KC and his band ! With 93 KHJ on the radio I drove us in her metalic green vinyl top 67 Firebird 400 her dad just bought her it had American Racing mags and 50 series tires it was a bad ass car . Sense we live in Southern California in a South Orange County Beach town where was the concert ? at Disneyland ! ! Dam ! the whole day/night was ku-razy awesome we're young in our teens , warm sun setting California evening , a new hot beach bunny girlfriend , Disneyland and KC and the Sunshine Band WOW ! It's like a dream did it really happen ? it did we didn't want the night to end it doesn't get any better than that gives me goose bumps thinking about it. Oh yeah a few years later we ended up getting married and are still madly in love
