Snowblower electric start repair - spins but won't start

- On my Ariens SS522 snow blower, the electric start spins but doesn't engage with the engine gear and doesn't start the engine. It has a Tecumseh Starter Motor #590670 and I found the rubber starter drive pinion (tecumseh part #590644) is missing. It's possible the part dry rotted, cracked, and fell off.
I noticed that the starter gear was sticking on the starter shaft, but even after lubricating the starter shaft the engine would not start. Sometimes the starter gear even engages with the engine but doesn't turn over the engine. After some searching online I realized the starter drive pinion (Tecumseh part #590644) is missing. Without that part, the starter gear just spins freely around the starter shaft and produces no torque to turn over the engine.
This is the great quality of info and production that all repair videos should have
You get right to the point. No "fluff" Thank you! Also the video well focused, well edited, and the audio is perfect. Very helpful.
Wow! Short, sweet, and to the point without all the drama of what you ate for breakfast, why your wife is staying at her mother's house, etc. Thanks for the info. You, sir, are a life saver. My starter motor has been driving me nuts, and this is the exact problem. I'm in your debt! Great job on the video production.
A+++ simple straightforward video!
Woke up on NYE to 6 inches of snow & my Ariens snowblower not starting... No one locally carries repair parts anymore (dislike) ended up ordering the starter drive pinion from Amazon. Took 4 days to show up. The entire repair took about 30 minutes (including taking the cover/brackets off, cleaning/lubricating & putting it back together) FIRED RIGHT UP!! it's a Festivus miracle! THANK YOU & shoveling sucks!
Thanks! Mine just stopped engaging last year and we have about 1 foot of snow. I will be able to fix it tomorrow. You did an excellent job, showing and describing the parts and problem.
Had the same issue with a Toro 2400E about 5-6 years back and found a similar video which helped me diagnose this exact problem. What I realized had happened was that the rubber pinion piece must have dry rotted/cracked and fell off of the shaft of the starter. I remember finding a broken piece of hard rubber/plastic at the end of one season near the blower but I had no idea where it came from and I didn't figure it out until the following year when the electric starter made the loud whirring/spinning noise and wouldn't start.
Just got a snowblower (for free of course) and this is happening.... Repair once Amazon delivers the part... Thanks for the great no BS video.
dude. perfect video. I appreciate the straightforward content as I have the same exact problem on a snowblower. should be a quick fix!
Great video to show whats wrong with Tecumseh Starter Motor #590670. watching this helped me fix my starter for a missing $10 rubber starter drive pinion
Geeze, you need to keep these great videos coming. Slow motion, no fluff or BS and great camera work. You are the man!!!!!!!!!
THANKS, for The only video that showed that type of starter and the problem it has with the RUBBER FRICTION PINION DRIVE, THAT CAUSES FRICTION AND PUSHES THE STARTER GEAR INTO THE FLYWHEEL.
Bad design! Had the same Problem
Glad I can help! It took me a while to figure out what was wrong with mine so I figured I could help others by showing what I learned.
EXCELLENT....NICE...WAY 2 Go
Thank you, well done. One thing- you do not have to remove the two boomerang shaped pieces holding the front of the cover, just back the screws out a bit and it comes right off.
Excellent video. My Murray Snow Blower rubber starter drive pinion was missing I followed your steps and it was fixed. I agree with callmeko. You are the only one to do this type of starter. Many thanks.
Exact issue I had with my Arens, thanks for doing the second half of my troubleshooting for me!😋
Any Tecumseh engine, apparently. I'd like to think I would have figured it out eventually, but you sure saved me a lot of time and frustration. Well done. Thanks.
Thanks. This was my exact problem John Deer TRS21 Now Fixed and starts no problem.
Absolutly the best video explained . Thank you so much !!!
Much thanks for this vid. It's 2 years old so I don't know if you still monitor this but it was just what I needed. My starter went out almost 2 years ago and I've been pull starting ever since. I know that's not a big deal for some, but the herniated disk in my back would start to scream after a couple of pulls which is why I have a snow thrower in the first place . How that part disappeared is beyond me. What a horrible design. I called around locally and found it for $7.99.
Mucho Gratudio
Thanks for the help! We have a Craftsman with this same starter, it actually had the pinion drive, but this vid showed me what the drive nut actually does, ours was slightly rusted to the shaft, nothing a little lube spray wouldn't fix
So you just relieved my frustration with my snowblower not starting..I took off the starter... freed it up....put back on and voola...it worked....know anyone who wants to buy a shovel?
It's exactly what went wrong with my starter, thanks so much.
Thanks for this info. I've been pull starting for the past few years because of this 10.00 part. Great info, easy fix. 👍
Great video! Fixed my snowblower in 15 min.
Thanks!!!
Thanks for making me understand how this works. My problem was a frozen drive nut.pulled it off and worked it into the staft .thanks again
Excellent video--thank you! I have not only this exact model, but another Tecumseh which has the same issue.
This *just* happened to my mom's Murray 21" snowblower over the weekend. She sent me a picture of an exploded rubber "doughnut," and asked me to diagnose the problem for her, via text messages. I looked at numerous parts fiches, but couldn't find anything that looked like that, so I drove 30 miles to her house, to see what I could figure out. Once I got there, she told me the electric starter no longer worked as well. I looked at the starter, and could indeed see that it wasn't engaging. At some point, I surmised that rubber doughnut busted off the end of the shaft and fell out the bottom of her unit. Again, I looked at multiple parts fiches, but couldn't find an exploded view of the starter itself. I then Googled "Murray starter motor" and looked at some pics. Eureka! I could clearly see the rubber doughnut on every starter I looked at. This video has confirmed my suspicions and provided me with the part number I need to fix her out-of-production turd. I mean, snowblower. Thank you, good sir!
Really a great video. Straight to the point. Great explanation. Thanks. I'll go see mine now.
Believe it or not I think this is the problem with my car when the temperature gets colder the grease gets thicker and the car wont start. Thanks for the clear video of how the starter works.
Excellent photography and very informative. Thanks
Thanks man, straight to the point, and explained very well
Great video. This fixed my MTD in less than 15 minutes.

I like you’re style! No bs. Thanks for the help!
I hope this is my issue. Thank you so much for the great informative video. God Bless.

Great video, thank you for this, big help!!
Thanks for this... I've got a Troybilt that only engages one out of 10 times... so I might have something different going on, but at least I know what's supposed to be happening.
Thank you for your video, very informative.
Just bought one second hand and was wondering why it wasn’t working..just making the same noise. Starts right up with pull starter but would like to use the electric start for future use. Thanks for info. Cheers!
I have the same problem. This helps. Thanks.
Very helpful. Thank you!!
Thumbs up. Great video.
Back in business, thanks!

Mine just cranks when I push the electric button not sure what it needs "help' please make a video and thank you
However it works good when I pull it through the cord.
Thanks that wuz it.
Would this be the same remedy for a Toro snow thrower? Great video!
This is exactly what happened to mine! Thank your for this video! Where did you find the part? Can you provide a link?
Ignore this comment! I found the part and placed an ordered. Thanks so much for this video. You saved me from buying a new snowblower. I think I can get my blower from 1989 working again with this part.
very nice video! great camera work and audio. you a professional or somethin'?
I own a MTD Yard Machine 8hp 24 inch and I am having a hard time starting my snow blower. My model number is 31AE640F382. I am not sure if a rubber starter drive pinion would work for my machine. Let me know what I would have to buy to get my snow blower to start.
Ok, I've got a , Ariens 522 model 938017, serial # 012897. I get confused when trying to locate the part number I need for my snow blower. Is the part # referenced in this thread/video (Tecumseh part #590644) universal with all 522s ? When I see the exploded diagrams they don't list the starter drive pinion that I have found.
Thanks for any insight.

Whats the name of the clip that holds everything on?? I'm missing that piece.
Hi, Do you have the part number for the stater gear and spring kit,, need all of the pieces..
Mine doesn't even move along the shaft, even after spraying and trying to pry+hammer the thing =/
My snow blower may have this issue.
How much was the part? Have a link on where you can find it?
Where do i find the rubber part????
My electric starter turned into shrapnel on the inside. No hope.
If my starter isn't engaging, should I still be able to start it manually?
Yes, you can still start the machine manually
yes with pull cord ,no problem........
Should have cleaned the shaft before replacing everything
I have an electric starter on my mower with same type starter. Wont turn the engine over. Pinion drive is split around the perimeter. Do you think this may act the same as not having one at all?
Showed me exactly what i was hoping for. Many thanks to you.
Thankyou sir!
Thank you for the great vid short and sweet.
