    Back in the 90's, I was involved getting child car seats crash tested to see if they met national safety standards. To that end, our company owned an infant dummy that we would bring to the crash testing site. Since the test site was in another state, I was tasked with bringing it with me when I traveled to and from testing. I decided it would more interesting to travel with the dummy dressed as a real baby. So, I put baby clothes, shoes, and a hat on the dummy when traveling (of couse with a name tag for Elmo the dummy). I've even got photos of the dummy in the cockpit of a plane following one of my flights (the stewardesses loved him) along with travel pics of the dummy "seeing" the local sites around the test facility.

      Their target base isn't the public, since it's outside the purchasing power of almost every individual. Their target audience is technically minded people, who work for engineering/design firms, who either need stuff scanned or who can afford to buy and maintain a scanner.
      I would like to just have a mri scanner, just to throw little aches and pains into and see what's going on inside the body, but me watching a RUclipsr go through a mri machine as part of a video, like StrangeParts recently (although they were also selling a process as a product) doesn't make me the target audience for buying one

    That level of detail on a 3D print seems like it'd be a dream come true for museums. There's so much stuff in archives that they can't show to the public, because the real thing is too fragile or valuable in one way or another to put out on display (even in a climate controlled UV-protected sealed case). And accurate replicas of mixed-material artifacts or super delicate bones/fabrics/etc can be incredibly difficult and time consuming to make.

    One of my favorite facts about crash test dummies (I study egress systems and testing and have 'met' several of them) is that each body part not only replicates the size and shape, but also the center of mass of the part. That way they move correctly under forces. In other words if a forearm was weighted too much at the elbow side it would move differently than if it was weighted at the wrist due to mass, inertia, and momentum. Therefore parts like the sensor packs also have to be mass weighted and checked to be sure they don't change the CG of the part they are inserted into.

    The weight in the rear is likely also there to simulate the weight of the brain, which is quite far back in the skull (obviously). Most people forget how much of the face has sinuses and other cavities behind it, as well as the mouth and throat. The moves the center of gravity way back, which is why you two very strong muscles on either side of your windpipe, so your head doesn't flop backwards, like a baby who's muscles haven't gained the necessary strength.
    This center of gravity and accurate simulation of weight distribution is key in analysing impacts on the skulls, as it determines the movement of the head in a crash.

Whenever there was consultation with experts in the show, I would imagine that at least sometimes he would have to be genuinely listening to things he hadn't heard before in order to learn something new. • @lumafield
      @lumafield Год назад +6

      Thanks! Glad you enjoyed seeing these. The major limitation on scannable materials has to do with our ability to see through them with X-rays. As you go down the periodic table, the elements generally become more opaque to X-rays, so the maximum thickness of parts that we're able to scan goes down. For instance, this machine can scan up to 140mm of plastic, 50mm of aluminum, or 9mm of steel. None of these is dangerous in a CT scanner the way ferrous metal would be in an MRI machine!

    I will admit, I did have a dream once there was an animated series based on the Mythbusters.
    Pretty much the team solved myths and mysteries, buster being essentially the scooby. Communicating with signs *Like Wiley Coyote*. As well as facepalming at points, or shaking his hands wildly in front of him when they ask him to do something to TEST something "Buster test this cannon".
    The big thing... It was more scientific at points, like when a trap is being made one of the characters would walk through how said trap was built, etc.
    Going over specific things, etc.
    It was a great dream, yes Adam being more of a "Explosives are the answer"
    "No adam, no boom."
    "Yes BOOM"

    Just think about how they originally got all the necessary measurements for the crash test dummies. They most likely had to disect many different dead bodies to find the average for people. Since they tried to get the weight of each body section correct, they had to be cutting heads & limbs off and weighing everything. It is especially disturbing when you think about them doing that for every size of dummy, including children and even infants.
