Arguably the coolest aspect of Tumblr was (kind of still is) this ability to pick and choose you're content. If you are consistent enough even for just a little while, Tumblr let's you build your own little content bubble, where all you see is exactly what you want to see. That's why fandoms are so strong on Tumblr. The obvious issue with this is that, if the community you create this way is even a little bit shitty, the entire thing can very quickly turn into an echo chamber for its worst aspects, resulting in a toxic mess that eventually boils over into other spheres as well, contaminating the entire site little by little.

I've been on tumblr since 2012-2013 and I went from being part of Attack on Titan community, which was HUGE (good times) to eventually finding my place in very small Beyblade community. I can't even explain this, but for some reason this is the only place where Beyblade fandom feels so close for me. There's like, what, around 30 blogs, and we constantly reblog from each other, and it kind of feels like a small town where everybody knows everybody.
I’ll be honest I thought reddit was tumblr until all the reddit videos started coming out. I’m getting too old to keep up with these kids and their social media

If you’re wondering why people are still using Tumblr... it’s for the exact same reason people were using Tumblr in 2007-2012. Blogs, fan art, fandoms, and shitposts.
I've heard Instagram is having a similar issue with CP and MAPS. People try to report the accounts but IG either won't take them down or it takes forever. Also, the NSFW ban doesn't seem to be foolproof because you can still find smut everywhere on Tumblr. I don't use Tumblr much, so idk if smut was intended to be part of the ban or if it was mainly targeted at NSFW art. tumblr had such a good, comprehensive tagging system that i've never seen on pretty much any other social media. it was so easy to find what you wanted, chronologically, and find more content like it with just a few taps.
The newgrounds website has something like that on that platform. I would say it's 70% like Tumblr's tagging system.. You can ban tags, view certain age ratings. It's pretty reliable to be very honest. Outside of the odd no tag or artwork being in the wrong rating.... It's easy to publish on as an illustrator, but animators gotta be cautious.... You got to have an actual account to use adult content though... Unless you look for the artist.
The only downside with newgrounds is that it didn't have the population tumblr did. An unfortunate requirement for a popular social media/ fan content site is that it has to already be popular. Also, being able to just casually scroll through all the things you like on top of it is pretty nifty. I feel tumblr did the best at letting you curate your own experience compared to its competition. But yeah. Not many sites give you the luxury to type in a fairly unpopular franchise or character and find tens to hundreds of results even for some of the more obscure stuff. I really wanted to get into newgrounds but even some of the more popular franchises I enjoyed only ever ended up having 2-5 results.
@@MuStCoMmEnT09 Newgrounds is not an easy platform to start on, but once you do start posting, you will gain a foot hold, but it requires more general interaction than something like tumblr and twitter. Tumblr had a special aesthetic. Porn, art, Porn art, special topics, unique discussions, -It felt personal, genuine, and authentic with its very diverse yet collaborative community. -the quality of the image and videos were always top-notch. It was ahead of its time.
I think they also banned porn because there were child pornography communities and their bots couldn't properly delete them I mean ok yeah it's illegal but did you *have* to ban all porn? ALL OF IT? Dick move, Tumblr.
Also did nothing about gore during that time. I came back to tumblr after the porn ban was announced and saw a beheading of a dog? But a post with my face on it got flagged? 🤔🤔🤔 (The gore was found under the “porn ban” tag too. I didn’t deliberately search for that.)
The same thing almost happened to RUclips when they made their new content ID bot in 2014, but then they tore down watchmojo.com and teamfourstar, and FUNimation had to go out of its way to finally come in contact with the Google headquarters to have them bring back teamfourstar. Afterwards, RUclips realized the bot was completely counterproductive, and stopped it. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the fact that RUclips realized they were hurting their platform, and tried to remedy it, while Tumblr literally announced their plans a month before the actual plans, and still went forward through it...

I'm still using Tumblr. In fact, it's the only social media I use...for a number of reasons. The biggest being that it just feels cozy and familiar, and it's really easy to use, and learn how to use. Nowadays pretty much every community I've seen is very welcoming to any newcomers, and no one really cares id you know what you're doing. It also has the benefit of anonymity; you can really just be yourself, which I dig. It's so easy to find stuff you like, and stuff you never knew you liked. Sometimes It's nice to just make jokes and tell stories to a bunch of strangers, and watch them interact, react, and add on to it. It's not the best site, in fact it's probably far from it, but it's the only one I actually enjoy using, and feels like more than just celebrities and their fans.
tumblr has a reverse chronological feed(newer posts are at the top, no recommended posts), no character limit for posts, and allows complete anonymity that's why people still use it
I saw a post of multiple screenshots of another text post. The person who posted the screenshots said the post was so long, it not only crashed the app, but also crashed his phone. @@VultureClone it's almost as weird as people who say they hate reddit. Reddit is probably the quickest way to get news, sometimes before the actual news sites get them, and it's just a really great way of accessing or conversing information. Everyone left when they actually started removing porn but those that lingered realized that the algorithm ran like once or something because when people kept trying to post porn they learned it wasn't getting removed anymore. Sooo in short. There's still porn on tumblr which is why i think they still get so many views. Revive your old account and see if anyone you followed is still posting
honestly the NSFW ban was probably the best thing to happen for users who don’t lust for that type of stuff. As you can see with Twitter, that app thrives on discourse, arguments, politics and porn, taking that away from an app makes it a lot smaller and a lot less compacted with people who aren’t their for the right reasons, that’s why Tumblr is still a niche app for its community and random blog posts. I enjoy it because it’s a safe space to find niche aesthetics, memes, post fanart or your own art, and interact with fandoms… there’s some parts of it that’s still a mess, but in comparison to Twitter it’s way calmer, just please don’t join now that you’ve left, you will probably be attacked 😃
Man, the Tumblr NSFW area was perfect. You could find anything and ask for anything, and usually people delivered. You could talk directly to the artist, get private commissions, and the writers there would do anything for you. Such a shame it had to be axed.

Hate to say it, but the reason people are still on Tumblr is because of really strong and extremely, *extremely* toxic communities of young adults overly obsessed with stuff like kids shows and certain games (exactly why game series like fnaf are considered bad or toxic now). I heard a story where some girl almost killed herself because of the amount of verbal abuse she was receiving because her fanart was off model by a little bit or something.
Didn’t she draw a Steven Universe character and people were calling her a horrible person because she drew them like a little bit thinner than she is in the show?
Mister Human It’s amazing to me that people got angry at an artist for going off model when the artists of the actual show can’t stay on model to save their lives lol. If you like Steven Universe, no hate, watch what you want but holy shit. The lack of consistency in the animation is mind boggling.

The obvious issue with this is that, if the community you create this way is even a little bit shitty, the entire thing can very quickly turn into an echo chamber for its worst aspects, resulting in a toxic mess that eventually boils over into other spheres as well, contaminating the entire site little by little.

tumblr had such a good, comprehensive tagging system that i've never seen on pretty much any other social media. it was so easy to find what you wanted, chronologically, and find more content like it with just a few taps.
Yesss! @✌
@@MuStCoMmEnT09 Newgrounds is not an easy platform to start on, but once you do start posting, you will gain a foot hold, but it requires more general interaction than something like tumblr and twitter. honestly the NSFW ban was probably the best thing to happen for users who don’t lust for that type of stuff.

Ah yes, the great porn exodus of tumblr. Thats one for the history books.
Anyway, its wasnt child porn, it was a 1000yr old dragon loli.
the weird thing is that lolicon has
d and still has a home on twitter, yet you dont see apple removing it from the app store.
Can't wait until the day he makes one of these videos about GameStop
boy do i have good news for you
The bad tumblr users went to twitter and made it worse.
@@dizzyguy101 Twitter was always fucking shit.
Fuck your right. I try to use Twitter in favour of tumblr, but jesus fucking christ people freak out over everything even more than anybody in the 2016 tumblr era did. Not to mention that it gets even worse since sometimes their actual personal lives get dragged into the drama since Twitter is more of a public platform.
Good and bad tumblr users fled to Twitter, I see my favorite artists on there, and one of the shittier communities on there that didn’t get snuffed out on Tumblr (because staff wouldn’t do shit) it was the Pedophiles that posed as LGBT members...
Andrea Yanome after a few modifications to my Twitter timeline I was able to get rid of most of the unwanted tweets and now I’m back to seeing great artwork.

Tumblr killed deviantArt, then Tumblr commited slow suicide, and now is when deviantArt makes its comeback.
Devianart is lauching its new interface and forcing people to use it before its officially out, he aint making a comeback
Oh no
WhiskersPaws
It’s not forcing people to use it. You can toggle between the new site layout and the old site layout. A shit ton of people still use the old layout, myself included.
@@galacticfire9727 I've noticed complaints that when people switch to the new layout, they can't go back
Ines Sousa
That happened to me! I was trying it out on the first day and it was such a glitchy mess on iPad that I couldn’t get the switch to work. Thankfully it worked on my laptop, but I’m not sure if it’s still an issue. I have a feeling they probably fixed it.
Hate to say it, but the reason people are still on Tumblr is because of really strong and extremely, *extremely* toxic communities of young adults overly obsessed with stuff like kids shows and certain games (exactly why game series like fnaf are considered bad or toxic now). I heard a story where some girl almost killed herself because of the amount of verbal abuse she was receiving because her fanart was off model by a little bit or something.
homestuck also (not a game but still) there was a huge amount of toxicity for one of the ships
Didn’t she draw a Steven Universe character and people were calling her a horrible person because she drew them like a little bit thinner than she is in the show?
Mister Human Yeah I think so
Mister Human It’s amazing to me that people got angry at an artist for going off model when the artists of the actual show can’t stay on model to save their lives lol. If you like Steven Universe, no hate, watch what you want but holy shit. The lack of consistency in the animation is mind boggling.
Fnaf was toxic during it’s FNAF 1-4 days, after that most of the toxicity and shipping went away.
Tumblr: The Myspace of 2019
@Thomas Vatz yeah Myspace is now doing better than Tumblr in 2019

Tumblr has a decent shitpost community, thats why people are still there also gay people
LGBT community, fandoms, shitposters, political activists, people who like to yell into the void in general, they're all still there. Hell, tumblr is one of the best sites if you want to be online but not contribute anything whatsoever to the benefit of advertisers, so, look at that, commies like the site too.
The fuckin' MEMES, man. So many memes come straight from tumblr and nobody even knows it. There's a ton of talented artists and intelligent people who create great OC.
Sjws too
@@SapphosGalPal You got that right about not contributing anything lol. If I had a nickel for every anime gif blogger that ranted sjw/PC agendas that amounted to nothing. I could buy tumblr for 3 million dollars myself.
I came to tumblr for the gays, stayed for the niche porn, and when that was banned I stayed for the gay shitposts, but I'm only there 2 or 3 times a week instead of all day every day
