  • Happy 2024, everyone! I know we're already a month into the New Year, but I've finished my newest video and it's a new game show review. This time, it's the 1988 version of "Wipeout" starring the late, great Peter Tomarken. Even though the show bombed in the US, it did do well overseas. Anyway, enjoy and look forward to more fun this year.

I did not know Wipeout was syndicated for a while after. ABC's affiliate, WISN in Milwaukee placed it in the same slot as most of the other game shows ABC showed earlier in the 80's (i.e. Double Talk & Bargain Hunters, then after, Match Game). They even used Bob Ridgely, who was an ABC staff announcer during that time as one of their announcers. John Harlan would announce on this show too.

Good Stuff, I’ve had my idea of a revival.
    1. Change the name to “Odd Ones Out” (You’ll see why)
    2. The front game utilize eliminating the wrong answers which overtakes the right answers (a la Trivia Trap). Values can be $75 doubling for each answer knocked off, along the way, there would be 2 “75% Off” placed behind the answers. The contestant in control can use it to take $75 from a competitor and possibly disadvantage them, as originally, the 2 players with the highest amount of money move on.
    3. Tie/Challenge Round is no different from the original (From that point of the show on, we’re searching for right answers like its predecessor)
    4. Bonus Round will be separated into 3 Rounds called “Beat the Odds” (This round doesn’t determine if they’re coming back). The first board presented will have 6 options with 3 Correct. Then, 10 Options with 5 Correct. Finally, 12 Options with 6 Correct (Like the predecessor). To accommodate disable players, contestants won’t be running to and from the board but instead work a control panel which they lock in their answers with a lever next to them. Also with a clock system similar to The Price is Right’s “Time is Money” (The Money Clock system was also used in the Dutch version of Wipeout)
    5. (Similar to Games of the 70’s) A Champion wins a new vehicle after winning 5 Main Games (5 Shows)
(It’s a lot to read, but it’s a worthy successor in my opinion)

Temptation: The New Sale of the Century used a version the opening round of Wipeout. But they called it the Knockout round. Maybe something like Knockout could be the name of the show.

The fact that the 1988 game show Wipeout suffered from poor ratings and also had virtually a bad airtime on syndicated TV shows how small thinking a lot of TV executives were back then.

Yeah. I noticed that after I recorded the audio for this video. Then again, I’m from California. I apologize for my error.
