I love your work and watching you think through your logical steps sharing your motivations and and priorities. And its wild watching your winter losses pile up higher than my greatest successes. Keep on keeping on... Monty.

Love seeing your calves! I went into beekeeping because I didn’t have the space for cattle anymore. It’s great if a guy can stay out of debt so your not a slave to it. Take care!

Good idea Ian, with the diversified operations you run. Grain farming sucks right now, honey prices aren't good but the cattle are great. Do you have the potential to pick up another bunch of bee yards in your area without spending too much time on the road? Thank you for sharing. Have a good week.

Ian, if you haven't considered building the new shop out of ICF blocks, take a look at this type of construction. I am currently building a 50 x 85 ICF shop out of Fox Block 8 inch core ICF blocks. There are many advantages of building ICF especially with heating and cooling. Much of the labor you and your children can do as well.

With out the stock a fancy office doesn't matter. Every year since I've started watching the fall and spring are always on the hairy edge of disaster. Bringing bees in, then they are bearding heavily or having to put out the bees a bit early because they want to fly and then getting stuck in the mud or worst. Protecting the money makers sounds like the correct choice to me. You have time to wish for a better office now because you're not constantly worrying about what's going to happen in the spring. Things are looking up.

Once I wanted to rent an expensive aircraft to fly to MN and back from Chicago but told my boss I wasn't going to due to the expense. He said, if you really want to do it, just do it. Glad I did, well worth the expense. Your shop dream may be a similar situation, just do it and things will work out in the end. The longer you wait, the more expensive a project it will be. My God that's a lot of dead bees! Reminds me of movie about the plague where town crier would sing "Bring out your Dead, Bring out your Dead"!

Wondering how most of the bees go away. Birds, raccoon or other animal finding the fresher bees. Or simply decomposing when it warms up

I'm facing the same thing as you but on a much smaller scale. I'm going into my 4th year with 54 colonies sitting in 9" of snow right now. I'm constantly thinking of what I need to invest in and is it the right decision. I've got enough equipment built for 25 10 frame colonies to add to my small operation right now. I've got enough nucs All with frames to make 30 more splits on top of my 25. I don't see myself selling 30 nucs So I need to plan to add more than 25. I feel like what started as a hobby turned sideline will soon become something more stressful if I make wrong decisions. Do I invest in more equipment, or do I hope I can sell a bunch of bees🤷 lol

Would be interesting to weigh a tote load of dead bees and see about how many total pounds of dead bees you haul out in the winter. Not sure why but still interesting.

A lot of fertilizer that, I wonder if bees are composable. Shreds that bail good.😁
I knew 2 years ago that you were going to be building new or seriously expanding your existing building, you need square footage you don't have atm. Another year can allow you to prepare better with capital, steer clear of debt if you are able.

It seems horrendous but in context during the summer thousands of bees from each hive die each month killed by flying to forage ..
My hives have bodies littering the snowbanks as they fly out to die or fly out for a bathroom break and dont make it back

I would think that you need to do a study on how well the refrigeration is helping getting the percentage of hives through the winter.
    Expanding mistakes isn't a win.
I would consider using refrigeration trailers as temporary storage to see how you do with additional space, and additional bees.
Seems like you have great plan so far, but all changes have to be fine-tuned.

I hope it will work well for you this year. I think the winter season in Canada is perfectly compatible with beekeeping, but it cannot be done with the LR system hive. It is the worst system for this purpose. This system is not designed for good wintering. I think you should consider some modificationс of the whole style of beekeeping. As far as I know one of the best systems for winter seasons is the Roger Delon also known as Alpine hive. Unfortunately, this requires a new frame, and you already have lots (tons) of LR frames and that will cost you a lot. Maybe you can adapt the existing LR boxes and frames to something similar. Speaking for mites, you cannot avoid brood brake, that will help.
