    To Clara's Grandson (sorry I don't know your name) who put together all of these videos over the years to share your wonderful treasure that was your grandmother. Her stories warmed my heart and soul. I did not have a grandmother like yours but while watching these videos I feel like I could share a part of your grandmother. That makes me very happy. I'm sorry Clara's has passed on. But with your help, she touched millions of people's lives.

      Absolutely no joke, i'm a very easy going person and had to tell a friend that i was super pissed off about the situation we were in and because of how calm i presented myself it absolutely terrified her. I've snapped twice in my life and the people i went off on backed down almost immediately.

    • @tiaaaraaa

      John T Chiz, Time Lord I’m a whole opposite. I get mad a lot but people are still scared of me. I get into at least 1 fight every day (over something random). Also people see me when I’m really angry and I’m yelling and crying and they back down and try to calm me down before I say something stupid

    • @MayimHastings
      @MayimHastings 4 года назад +23

      Guilty as charged! I’ve learned to “let it out” a tiny bit when someone does something, instead of bottling it up and exploding after 20 years over nothing. It’s healthier for all involved. I learned my lesson after yelling at my Grandmother. I know, I know, but she really bullied the crap out of me because I was so meek. It was so wrong how I did it, though, and I will forever feel guilty. My brother learned early on to say things calmly, quietly, with a smile - but with a little personal dig. 😂

    • @MayimHastings
      @MayimHastings 4 года назад +11

      John T Chiz, Time Lord Yeah, that’s me! My brother is similar. He’s been married for 15 years and his wife said she’s only seen him legitimately mad once. He’s older and learned early that the best way to get back at me is to calmly smile. Drove me nuts as a kid! He’s great at little wise cracks and personal digs delivered with a passive smile. Serious power move! 😂

      Beware the wrath of the quiet man, or however the saying goes. Btw this looks remarkably similar to what I used to do when I was having a bad month. Eggs are some of the cheapest protein out there, and you get stamina and energy from the carbs in the potatoes and onion.

    There's a lot of people that need to
    watch shows like this so they can understand that you don't have to have fancy expensive imported ingredients to make good food that tastes good. Cheap salt and plain ol'
    black pepper from the grocery store.
    They try to use all these rare ingredients like the cooking show chefs do, then they can't figure out
    why " it doesn't taste like what grandma used to make "
    I'll be the first to admit it took me a couple of years to figure out that bit of knowledge. Our grandparents didn't drive around half a day trying to find some one-off spice. They used what they could find at the place down the street where they usually shopped.

      Then I hope you have plenty of salt, because as the cook confirmed, salt was the only source of any flavour in this tasteless, desperate potato-water concoction! It's a dreadful, desperate recipe.
      I realise people must eat whatever they can make do with in hard times, but thankfully for most people in 2020 there is no need to throw together such a basic and terrible mess as this.
      I think it's really patronising that people are saying things like "Wonderful, I'm going to make that!" Do they seriously have no access to stock cubes, fresh or canned vegetables, a modest amount of chicken etc to make a decent, flavourful soup from? That recipe is literally the equivalent of eating the water you boiled your veg in and calling it soup!

      @@sarahnichols4253 Did you add a stock cube/bouillion powder to the potato water? Love is great, but doesn't have flavour in itself! There is very little flavour in fried, cubed raw potato & onion steeped in plain tap water, and not much nutrition either. The bulk of nutrition is in the eggs.
      No disrespect to the hard times and circumstances of the recipe. I get that it was a desperate, Depression era concoction, using what precious few ingredients were available to feed a family on a tiny budget.
      Things are still tight for many in 2020, but thankfully today most people have a few store cupboard ingredients which would turn that very basic recipe into something with flavour and far better nutrition, eg stock, some fresh/frozen/canned vegetables, even a small piece of chicken/meat can be effectively stretched when added to soup and adds flavour, especially if on the bone. If you are struggling so badly that you had to make this horribly basic recipe for your kids exactly as presented, then truly my heart goes out to you. X

      I recall a TV show a while back, doing a test on the 'filling' properties of soup as opposed to a solid meal. They took the exact same meal, and served it up on a plate to one group of people, and liquidised it with water and served it as soup - exactly the same ingredients and quantities - to another group. Those who ate it as soup, reported they felt much fuller for much longer. The programme was actually about the benefits of soup for people on a diet.
      So there's a lot of sense in soup for staving off the hunger pangs, our grannies were definitely onto something with all the soups and bone broths they served up!

    Oh the memories. Clara reminds me soooo much of my Memaw. Her name was Alpha and she told me so many depression stories. She was born in 1916 and got married in 1934. I spent many months living with her during my teens and early twenties. She taught me how to make buttermilk biscuits, cornbread, and many other delicious foods. She encouraged me to try new recipes, even though she couldn’t eat any of it due to stomach cancer. I miss her every single day and these videos make me feel like I’m back in her farm kitchen. I can’t wait to try some of these recipes for my 5 kids. 🥰

You ate whatever you had. She said she never got so sick of stewed tomatoes in her life...stewed tomatoes on bread or toast. Some of these recipes too. Miss my grama so much! Actually thinking about 2020 now, has any time period ever been good except for a lucky few lol. I think she’s seen more than any of us born in the last few decades! Least of all the depression
