Lyrics
Alexander, our older brother
Set out for a great adventure
He tore our images out of his pictures
He scratched our names out of all his letters
Our mother should have just named you Laika!
Come on Alex, you can do it
Come on Alex, there's nothing to it
If you want something, don't ask for nothing
If you want nothing, don't ask for something
Our mother should have just named you Laika!
It's for your own good
It's for the neighborhood
Our older brother bit by a vampire
For a year we caught his tears in a cup
And now we're going to make him drink it
Come on Alex, don't die or dry up
Our mother should have just named you Laika!
It's for your own good
It's for the neighborhood
When daddy comes home you always start a fight
So the neighbors can dance in the police disco lights
The police disco lights
Now the neighbors can dance
Look at them dance

Laika - that was the name of the dog, the first animal launched into space, which was not destined to return to Earth. The dog died. And Alex (Alexander) is a man whose death was predicted in advance and is inevitable. This is the meaning of the song. A reference to a dog astronaut named Laika, whose death was inevitable.
sounds about right...
Just learned that sweet doggies name today and was like oh snap arcade fire I love that song.
alex is referring to Chris McCandless aka Alexander Supertramp
Laika has a statue in Star City, Russia.
Layers and layers …damn what a good song.
RIP Laika
I love this goddamn song. It feels so energizing and sad at the same time
Icy Cold Hands yo
Perfectly balanced as all things should be
yes
The first two Neighborhood's are insane
Will Ford all of them, this album doesn’t have a bad track
*three
All of the tracks are insanely good
This entire album is fucking nuts, Arcade Fire has released a ton of good shit but nothing comes close to the purely emotional epic that is Funeral
@@gerbilpmc *four
I really don't know why, but that whistle/scream at 3:05 gets me everytime. That is a really keen detail and very meaningful too.
I was thinking that is sounds like the distorted whistle that a radio makes, like what Liaka the space dog might've heard when she got sent away.
this song is extremely uplifting for people named Alex.
you bet it is
hahaha
PHIL COLLINS Yay my name is Alex!
As someone named Alexander, I’m here to remind you that you will die broken and alone. Facts.
My name is dan but yes plz call me alex lmao
I love that this song has absolutely nothing in common with Neighborhood #1 except the use of the word neighborhood. This song absolutely is Laika because nobody ever names it as one of their favorite songs until they're listening to it.
it’s been my favourite song off the album ever since i first heard it tho…
Weird how sometimes the lesser known songs are the greatest
What? It was their second single off of Funeral. Not exactly lesser known.
@@ghostface3739 In terms of listens on Spotify at least, Laika is only number 6 out of 10 on the album. Wake Up and Rebellion both have nearly 10x as many listens as this song
Here are answers to some common questions about Last Known Good Configuration.
I saw this on David Letterman in 2003 or 4.
the vocals in the background around the 2:00 mark are everything.
This song always makes me cry like a baby.
Glad i have a cup, to catch up the tears.
If you turn vampire, you can drink them and be cured!
Come on Alex, there's nothing to it!
This song was the ringtone of my fathers cellphone when I was a child...
I feel it on another level ,so many childhood memories:)
Damn. Your dad sounds like a cool ass dude like actually. What an obscure choice for a ringtone lol.
Omg, "cellphone when I was a child". I just got old.
The mention of Alexander invokes the memory of Alexander Supertramp from Into the Wild. Some of the lyrics do relate to that story too. And my fav part was mentioned earlier and it's "Come on Alex! You can do it! Come on Alex! There's nothing to it!"
That part is kinda Forrest Gump-y. "Run, Forrest! Run!"
Both are awesome :)
Ecstatic vibrations, totally transcendent!
HARDCORE.
YEAAAAAAGHHH!
HARDCORE TO THE MEGA
as the older sibling who was outta control in my teen years in a family that didn't know how to handle me, i always think of my younger sister when i hear this song, forced to be the good kid, and feel sad for all of us. happy to say i survived tho and am mostly normal now, unlike poor alex/laika.
Very strange experience to listen to this a bunch of times without hearing most of the lyrics, and then reading them along.
Ñ
This was the first song I heard from Arcade Fire years ago and I haven't stopped following them since because they are always so amazing :)
likewise. I saw a live version of this on mtv2 back in the early 2000's and I was instantly transfixed.I think it's still my favourite song of theirs, despite various contenders
This whole album makes me want to break down and cry in the corner, its just so beautiful and wholesome. Truly an underrated masterpiece.
This song makes me cry without fail
It's energetic, but somber. More importantly, it's about callous death for the greater good. The anti individual
I can't even begin to describe the conflicting feelings this song sends me
Song about the broken bond between siblings. Unfortunately I can relate.
Screaming Tima same let’s get married
EVERYBODY can relate, 10 million its a surprise...
Nah Bro,My Man Kept On Visiting And Getting Shot Then Became God And Threw Houses
sixth grade - 2006
Came home one day to watch my daily dose of Fuse (I liked skateboarding). They had a musical guest (usually a very small band on the rise) everyday that I always looked forward to (found the thermals briefly before this as well as arctic monkeys on there). This time they were going to feature a music video.. This was the music video and it absolutely changed my life. Idk where my listening journey would've went without the guidance of this song and album. A few days later I bought the album at a borders too lol. Totally introduced me to a type of love for music I didn't know I had.. Saved the vid on a dvr and watched it way more often than I'll admit.
Arcade Fire and skateboarding have a very good relationship. Their songs are great beside skate footage
This is my favorite song ever. It means a lot to me. When I first found it, I was in a very vulnerable state. It made me feel okay for once in a long time. I love how... Raw it is (for lack of a better word.) It reminds me of the time I realized everything was going to be alright, and that's why sometimes I come back to be amazed by the best Arcade Fire song thus far. Thank you so much Arcade Fire, I truly wouldn't be where I am now if it wasn't for this.
This song is extremely sad and raw. Insane song and insane album.
I just happened to hear this song for the first time when I was in the car with my older brother Alexander.
[Verse 1]
Alexander, our older brother
Set out for a great adventure
He tore our images out of his pictures
He scratched our names out of all his letters
[Chorus]
Our mother should have just named you Laika!
[Verse 2]
Come on Alex, you can do it
Come on Alex, there's nothing to it
If you want something, don't ask for nothing
If you want nothing, don't ask for something
[Chorus]
Our mother should have just named you Laika!
It's for your own good
It's for the neighborhood
[Verse 3]
Our older brother bit by a vampire
For a year we caught his tears in a cup
And now we're going to make him drink it
Come on Alex, don't die or dry up
[Chorus]
Our mother should have just named you Laika!

[Verse 4]
When daddy comes home you always start a fight
So the neighbors can dance in the police disco lights
The police disco lights
Now the neighbors can dance
Look at them dance
Best track of the album!!
"if you want somethin, don't ask for nothin!
if you want nothin, don't ask for somethin!
I like 2:07 the best, you can hear his wife screaming and singing the words with him. That's powerful to me. I don't know

Alexander, our older brother (Alexander, nosso irmão mais velho)
Set out for a great adventure (Saiu para uma grande aventura)
He tore our images out of his pictures (Rasgou nossas imagens de suas fotos)
He scratched our names out of all his letters (Apagou nossos nomes de suas cartas)
Our mother shoulda just named you Laika (Nossa mãe deveria apenas ter te nomeado Laika)
Come on Alex, you can do it (Vamos Alex, você pode fazer isso)
Come on Alex, there's nothin' to it (Vamos Alex, não há motivos)
If you want somethin' don't ask for nothin' (Se você quer algo, não peça por nada)
If you want nothin' don't ask for somethin (Se você não quer nada, não peça por algo)
Our mother should have just named you Raipa
God I love the chorus sooooo much
The Neighborhood theme really works musically even if I confess I don't always know what they are talking about.
My names Alex and when he goes "cmon alex you can do it!! Cmon alex theres nothing to it" it always feels inspiring
FREAKIN AMAZING!
That final chord, so incredibly dramatic I love it
I love this, Its always stuck in my head
their best song by far! I love these guys!
What a fantastic song! It makes you feel truly sorry for the haters.
I stayed home "sick" from school in like 8th grade and got real stoned and was watching music videos on VH-1 or Fuse or something and this came on and very much bummed me out

Arcade Fires most violent sounding song in my opinion. I mean 1:52 that doesn't sound like it could be Arcade Fire at all

2:20-2:47 Wow! Most beautiful bit of any AC song. It's so great of a song honestly.

This song is so, so disturbing but at the same time so brilliant for it. Arcade Fire Roolz.

There's just something about their music that makes me travel into an unknown yet familiar world that's full of epic adventures! And every time I listen to this album, it's different... It's weird, but I love it! @_@

Ahhh this song...
Epic! I love this song so much!
i think... i love this.
Obviously this song is about an older brother who got lost in drugs. But the real story is about the hopes and dreams of a father who named his son alexander (the great) but whose mother should have named him Laika (the dog sent out to space) instead.
