Lyrics
I woke up with the power out
Not really something to shout about
Ice has covered up my parents' hands
Don't have any dreams, don't have any plans
I went out into the night
I went out to find some light
Kids are swinging from the power lines
Nobody's home, so nobody minds
I woke up on the darkest night
Neighbors all were shouting that they found the light (We found the light!)
Shadows jumping all over my walls
Some of them big, some of them small
I went out into the night
I went out to pick a fight with anyone
Light a candle for the kids
Jesus Christ, don't keep it hid!
Ice has covered up my parents' hands
Don't have any dreams, don't have any plans
Growing up in some strange storm
Nobody's cold, nobody's warm
I went out into the night
I went out to find some light
Kids are dying out in the snow
Look at them go, look at them go!
And the power's out in the heart of man
Take it from your heart, put in your hand
What's the plan?
What's the plan?
Is it a dream? Is it a lie?
I think I'll let you decide
Just light a candle for the kids
Jesus Christ, don't keep it hid!
Because nothing's hid, from us kids!
You ain't fooling nobody with the lights out!
And the power's out in the heart of man
Take it from your heart, put in your hand
And there's something wrong in the heart of man
You take it from your heart and put it in your hand!
Where'd you go?

The energy this song brings is absolutely insane
This song actually feels like standing in the middle of a snow storm in the dark with the cold wind hitting your face
I always play this when jogging out in winter, for some reason it fits better than any other song for that other than maybe "Cold Wind Blows" by eminem
100% love this song for the same feel
Neighborhood 1 is for when it just starts to snow gently
Really it does!
Can confirm as a Canadian that it feels like a real sss snowstorm!!!
Feels like hitting your nuts against a tall oak tree and screaming "Is this how you like it???? AmERICA??" Am I right????
Great band, not afraid to be big. Big soundscapes, big choruses, big emotions. Hope they grow to be real stadiumfillers.
@Bröderna Söderholm they did.
They did but now their music sucks
@@cesaradrianer It doesn't suck, it's just nothing like what it used to be. I hope they return to their roots eventually.
@@cesaradrianer it was one album that sucked. Hopefully their next one’s good
at the time of your comment, you were kinda 8 years late bud
incase anyone never knew this about this song yet, it's about the Montreal ice storm that happened back in 97 or 98 I believe it was, when the power was out for like weeks due to that storm
and it affected most the Quebec province too
it was out for more than a month in some area
and it was 98
Where are arcade fire from?
@@user-cm5id2rs3h Montréal
The ending of every song on this album when all the instruments bang together is mind-blowing, it feels like something out of this world
Arcade Fire is probably one of the best indie bands ever.
This song was released my freshman year of high school. It will always take me back. I love how the singer goes absolutely ape ship at the end of this song. “You ain’t foolin’ nobody, WITH THE LIGHTS OUT!!”
I could never love a band more than I love arcade fire.
Talking Heads are my all time favorite band. Have been listening to them all my life. I just "discovered" Arcade Fire about two years ago and I am IN LOVE. I can't listen to them enough! As a 56 year old who spent a lot of time in my 20's in the L.A. music scene, it's rare that I find music that excites and speaks to me. Haven't felt like this about any band since Talking Heads. I hope to see them in concert some day!
Rebecca GS
Hi both
I like Talking Heads too - they were great 👍
Was visiting Canada in 2017 and saw Arcade Fire at the Rogers Centre in Edmonton
Truly awesome and hope they swing around to your part of America soon
My top bands of all time
1. Radiohead
2. King Crimson
3. Pink Floyd
4 and 5th place, go to Grandaddy and Arcade Fire, though can't decide which.
If I was suggesting a new band to you, I'd go with Grandaddy. I'm sure you know Pink Floyd and King Crimson takes a lot of work to get into for some people as they're kind of prog.
@@childofthesun32 great picks..i shall check out granddaddy.
Have you listened to Interpol?
@@MrShahid0072 I haven't. I'll add them now to my iTunes playlist.
My dad showed me this music video and song when I was about 5. I still listen to it
Anna Boer how old r u now?
David Jung Almost 11.
lol
prob one of my fav music videos/ song i think i was 12 when i first heard it
ehehe. I guess time really is relative
'Is it a dream is it a lie? I think I'll let you decide'
Love that Line :)
I always imagine Neighborhood #3 as me and my friends in bikes riding in the middle of the city in Christmas. It's night and there's no danger or someone around.
David Jung that sounds amazing
When he says "some of them big, some of them small" you feel like he's right there in the room with you. I always associate this album with some sort of fantastical hope. It feels so real, yet like their from an alternate universe or something. Incredible record.
*They're (so the grammar nerds don't kill me lol)
I forgot about this song and just had a reminder it existed. So good still and can’t believe it’s 19 years old
Yeh I had to do the same. The video is a masterpiece
Same here
"Cause nothing's hid from us kids"
Way too real.
Will never forget the last 90 seconds of the song. Pure bliss.
Goddamit, this album kicks so much ass it is actually unbelievable. Easily the best album of the decade
I remember watching this video on MuchMusic during a particularly rough patch in grade 8. I was pretty much bedridden and whenever good music came on it was always welcome, instead of the rest of the bullshit on that station. How fitting is it that this video seems to be about the little guy winning in the end.
May AF continue to make great and inspiring music.
It feels like running in the winter, hot and cold at the same time
Love when those power chords hit! Never gets old.
1:18 Am I the only one who thinks the fat, rich guy looks like the mayor from The Nightmare Before Christmas?
sdfkjgh I thought the same.
He does ~
I was thinking of that for many years myself
fantastic..helped build the band's reputation as saviours of the album format.
A song i can listen when the power is out in my neighborhood
THAT'S ME RN BRUH
Last band to EARN a grammy
This brings me back to grade 9
Hearing this on a system or at least a good set of headphones .... powerful sound
Amazing!!! Funeral best album!
Just like that, I'm back in high school. Time sure flies!
ahh the first arcade fire song I've ever heard!
Mine was wake up in secret life of Walter Mitty
I remember watching this music video on a desktop computer. Ahhh, good old struggle times. Catchiest AF song imo.
I didn't know what Arcade fire was when they got the Grammy, but now i LOVE them.
Why can't I stop listening to this song???
Oh, wait - because it's amazing.
Well, that was easy.
:D
For the non-Canadians here, this song was inspired by the Great Ice Storm of 1998
I used to listen to this song ALL the time. :3 Awesome!
I love this song.
Amazing riff
in love with this band.
🇨🇦 too! This is the theme song for the Video Game: South Park - Snow day & it’s protagonist; New Kid!
Saw them at Angoulême, France, à long time ago 😊 Amazing band, such a joy 🎉
Incrível! Melhor banda sem mais!!!
GREAT concert last night!
Love this song
Canadian bands are the best, we the north
amazing song bonus, great video!
I watched a snowboard video to this song. It was just awesome. Thank you arcade fire!
Excellent response bednet. Couldn't agree more.
FAVORITE SONG!!
Great Song!!...Great Band!!!....
wicked song
Fucking love this song ! That intro automatically hits you in the face .So much energy , melodically adorned and crafted. As a drummer I dig how the instrument carries the song.
I don't know a greater song. LOVE Arcade Fire
one of their best songs
I love this song
My favorite💕
I love this song. The video is awesome!
arcade fire is so awesome.
Amazing........
This has to be one of my fav AF songs... can't stop my feet from tapping. Possibly also gonna develop RSI in my kneck cause it just won't stop bopping....
I developed Robert Space Industries in my wallet
Still in love with this song

Awesome video to a brilliant song
Montreal represented excellently in this losing power - genius artwork
This is so good.
🔥❤️🔥
This is my favorite one of their songs :D
That's some cool animation
looks like nightmare before christmas
its unbelievable all there neighborhood songs are amazing, and all there other songs are too but i wish my band was like this
Love these guys! This was the first Arcade Fire song I ever heard... I remember seeing this video (I think, on MTV?), and instantly liked it so much, I immediately looked them up online, saw they were coming to play in NYC soon, and bought tickets to their show in Central Park. Toward the end that show, David Bowie came out and played a couple songs with them. Amazing group.
Okay you win. That’s fucking amazing.
Says a lot when Bowie wants to play with you R.I.P.
He is on the song Reflextor. Heard on a youtube comment that Bowie heard them tinkering with the song in the studio and told them to press it or he would steal it lol ended up on the track himself.
@@AHMspadina I was on Bowienet when he Bowie (Sailor) was telling his fans how great Arcade Fire is 🙌👏😎
this song really uplifts me
Shadows jumpin all over the walls, some of em big some of em small -- the allegory of the cave
so powerful
De mis canciones favoritas para toda la vida💜
I wanna have a band like Arcade Fire ♥
They 100% deserved to win the Grammy. They were the only ones nominated who make ACTUAL music. I can't even begin to put into words how amazed and proud of them I am for their accomplishment. I've been a fan since Funeral and it's great to see them FINALLY, after 7 years, to get the recognition they deserve. Way to go Arcade Fire, you guys really stepped it up and showed the world that good music can beat out that Eminem/Gaga/Perry/Antebellum bullshit. I respect you a million times more now!
This music video is a whole fever dream tf
Yeah
Perfect Song In Every Sense😍
Dude you got it figured!
super excellent
This song reminds me of christmas!
This song makes me want to act silly and dance
Funeral is the best debut album ever.
this is weird, lovely and funny at the same time. Way back when this was released, I was 15 and full of something. Back then I was funny on the side of the hooded little fellows. Not sure why. Maybe I saw them as the little people within the society, trying to make a difference. Maybe they were where I saw myself back then. Watching the video now though. Man. So much love for the big guys. Trying to make the world working. Even sacrificing oneself to get the electricity running. So weird, yet also so logical.
Anyways, just wanted to share the above
Somehow... the first time I heard this song, just a couple of days of funeral being launched, the initial guitar chords rang a bell...
I thought... Cool... another New Order song!
I guess I never expected to be on the verge of discovering a all new taste for me...
Arcade Fire...
I bought the album instantly (there are things that its really a "crime" not to own)...
I bought Neon Bible on a prerelease... then the Suburbs... and now Reflektor...
They never ceasse to amaze me, how they bend their own limitations to create a all new sonority everytime...
It's probably the only band I've ever been ablle to compare to Talking Heads in those therms... every time new.
I do hope that some day I'll be saying about Arcade Fire as I say about TH... that I do own their complete work!
+Ricardo Castel-Branco I agree, this has always reminded me of New Order, the beat and the guitars, but I think these are a lot better.
Try Vampire Weekend if you like Talking Heads
Do you own Everything Now? It came out two years ago
muy buena canthion amigoth
Aaaah, the memories :D
Saludos
this song saved my life tonight... actually.... thank you...`tears everywhere.... alas i am alive....
So a good party song!
Une de mes chansons préférées :-)
epic!!!
Perfekt
YOU ! Yes you ! Your loved 💙
kewl
Arcade fire is the shit ..and i'm a hip hop fan..good music is good music.
🎶🦁🎶
3:28 - 3:50 is one of the best things I have ever heard
The song that made me really 'wake up' 😉 to Arcade Fire when I heard it on Funeral.
They seem to struggle to produce the force and arrangement of this song live I've noticed, and it never sounds as good live (in contrast to 'Wake Up' which totally takes off live in a way it didn't initially on record for me). Still, it's a great song.
And still love it in 2021, nearly 17 years later. Go AF!
am i the only one who plays this song when the power goes out?
what do you play it thu
Nah I do too
This is a great song about Jawas fighting the mayor from Nightmare Before Christmas.
This song makes me feel as if I were in a Norman beach, having fun.
Playing in the sand.
Then, a huge hurricane overtakes the sky. It starts trashing our belongings.
We flee in our 2000's red car, who was all the rage back then.
We ride it as the rain pours heavily on the glass windows of the vehicle.
This song hits differently after the Texas winter storm damn. So good though
