  • Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum has doubled its reward to $10 million to help solve the biggest art heist in history. Thieves made off with 13 masterpieces 27 years ago, and the stolen artwork is valued at around half-a-billion dollars. Seth Doane spoke to the art investigator who claims he knows where the art is today.

The only concrete information the FBI has for almost half century of their highest degree of investigations about this heist is that these artworks are "indeed missing"

Why not offer one fifth of the value...say 100 million ? If the the money is an issue, you could action off all or some of the pieces to recoup (& you'll always know where the art is) or you can even make a profit. They having been stolen & missing for upwards of 30 years, will raise their stock or collectors desire to possess them.

Going on record bold, especially people who are watching this and have the paintings could end up moving them somewhere else!

It's most likely a strategy. Going on national TV so the thieves panic and start moving the art and give away their location. All the investigator has to do is ask around in his clandestine circle. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. He's just trying.

    1) They are nor all masterpieces. There are two masterpieces -- the Vermeer and The Storm -- and then a lot of random stuff.
    2) The $500 million figure is based on a tentative auction value for the two actual masterpieces, since the rest together are woth perhap $10 million. Even if the Vermeer sells for $250 million - very plausible -- and the Storm for $150 million, we are still $100 million under this $500 million number.
    3) There are at least 100 "Indiana Jones's of the art world" running wound.
    4) The thieves missed many items of far greater value -- a Titian, several Michelangelos, and Asian ornaments made of sapphire and gold.
    5) They are not now nor have they ever been in Ireland. The IRA had nothing to do with this. This guy is a charlatan.
    6) Interpol includes stolen and looted antiquities in its estimate -- not just musuem art.
    7) Whatever "leads" he claims to have have been throroughly investigated years ago.
