He needs to watch/contact BBC ...they have an excellent series titled "Fakes or Fortunes". They do incredible amount of research by scientific methods and for provenance, etc. Almost no one in the USA (professionals) will be very reluctant to confer or authenticate paintings these days due to the amount of fakes they've (galleries & museums) been stuck with in the past. Hope this helps.

    No. Definitely not!
Nothing about it is good enough.
All you need to do is look at the technical mastery of the Doni Tondo in Florence and the unfinished Deposition in the National Gallery, London to know that Michelangelo could not POSSIBLY have painted this work.

    There's no way that's genuine.
The Virgin Mother's face is awfully amateurish. The use of tempera medium for a late work of his where everyone else already adopted oil is questionable. Compared to the Sistine Chapel, the modeling of the nude is rather wonky. It's even a "magnificent copy".

"The greatest painting of all time, the greatest artist of all time". Theses statements should be conditionalized for one can add many paintings and artists to this categories. Also he didn't have to go to Italy to get the painting restored, he could have stay right in the USA and gone to Baumgratner in Chicago one of the best preservationist there is and right in his own "back yard".

Michaelangelo refered to himself a a sculptor never a painter. For him to give a painting oil on wood to a friend is already suspect.

If you would bother to actually read and know the history behind it, before making uninformed comments here, you will be very surprised. So much information and forensics were done that were left off here this small edited clip. In fact a 40 min documentary was done in a three part series about it, and because people would rather watch duck dynasty instead of real history shows, it was never picked up in the US. It is about who you know and who is marketing you in the Art world, rather than real forensics, which all point in that conclusion.

It does not appear to be the quality which one would expect from a Michelangelo. It could be from a slightly later period, or from a follower, or in the style of. It needs to be cleaned, and afterwords,
the cleaned painting may provide further clues to its origin.

It does not match the way Michelangelo painted the body nor his use of color and tonal gradations being a
painting major, I do not believe it demonstrates the quality of his style.

For some reason the Michelangelo chalk this is based on was never brought up, maybe because comparing them would be obvious. the chalk is in Boston, so it makes me think it was even done on this side of the pond. Its Pietà for Vittoria Colonna
and has its own wikipedia page, and discusses this copy. I think the face of Mary is lifted from something else, its very Caravaggio, like the boy with the lizard or Medusa, not Michelangelo.

  • @carterri04

Michelangelo would not have painted it because he didn't even want to do the Sistine Chapel. This painting is not his for the simple reason that it doesn't take your breath away. Period.

After looking at more than several paintings from Michelangelo, you look for similarities that could point to the painter, the dressing of the Mary, period painting, you see a formula of dress he used for his most famous paintings, and then for his individual paintings, where he had more time or less to accomplish, i.e. a ceiling! He gets less detailed but still beautiful. The flowing gowns and tara's, tunics, are all flowing and NEVER with a string to bind the gown, which we see here, I looked through everything I could find, and not one lady, not one had even close to what she is wearing. The next is the facial expression, Sorry, the master was just a better painter than what is depicted here. The next one is the abs on the Christ, while this is closer to being "close" it is still not definitive because it is very 50/50. Looking that Sistine chapel, you will see what I am talking about, and little angels are about the ONLY THING that even comes close to his style. So, my viewpoint, this is definitely not one of his, and I agree, it is probably a student of his or someone interpreting his style. I will note that later in life, Michelangelo did paint ladies with more girth and more masculine features, which he got flack for but who is famous now? Not the critics lol:)
