- We've been checking out several historic locations in the area around Berchtesgaden but one of the most interesting that is connected with the 101st Airborne Division might be the spot that served as a collection point for the stolen art of Hermann Goering. That plus more at The Gettysburg Museum of History in this episode!

Dude. Not only are you doing something you love. God bless your wife by the way...but you are bringing so much wonderful history to me and thousands others. You are an absolute ROCK STAR. And even though Eric is very known and established. Your channel has helped bring more notoriety to him and his museum. Eric ROCKS too. Thank you both 👍🏼😎
I appreciate that! Thank you.

Good work as always get that blood sample from Hitlers couch tested you have a sample of a history make or break theory.
I stayed at the hotel that is just to the right of the tunnel, then was fortunate enough to meet a man in Berchtesgaden who showed me the guest registry from the hotel during the years of the war...knocked me off my feet. Also, I commented on your video regarding the ruins of Goerring's house and the Berghof...that I have a lot of photos taken by an uncle...Left you a message on IG.
Wow, did JD ever respond?
Visited the Hotel Bavaria last September. Very cool you were able to see the guest list!
@@davidwillis4839 The guest book had been looted, and was in private hands...I got lucky meeting the right people.
Sad that after all these years some families are still trying to get back the art that was found.
It's very hard to prove ownership. The Germans, despite a reputation for keeping accurate records, seem to have deliberately hidden the origin of the artwork so they couldn't be traced.
@@nancymilawski1048
Or killed the owners.
Oh goodie! I’ve waited all day for this….press PLAY now! 😊
Still missing the famous Young Man Raphael piece. Sad day. It’s a snowy cold day in Michigan, maybe I’ll watch Monument Men this afternoon.
Also the soldiers handling those paintings without gloves really hurt.
Absolutely adore the story of the monuments men and the mission that they undertook. Thank you for presenting this facet of history.
I agree with Neen. Although it got bad revues I really enjoyed the movie too.
The movie is great too.
@@peterhulse1064 Remember who is 'reviewing'. The Holidiotwood set who are total leftists and can't stand anything that makes America look GOOD.
As it IS truly.
I dont even have to finish watching this to know its going to be another amazing vid. Thanks JD
It was just amazing the amount of art looted and taken back to Germany. I can't even imagine going through everything and getting it returned. Thank you for another great video.
A list of birthday party guests? List of gifts? Is there anything Erik does not have? WOW 😮
Yes, he doesn't have the sign.......yet.
@@BigLisaFan that is true~
😅
Thanks for touching on this aspect of the end of the war with the Monuments Men! Now if you could only find the missing gold train :)
Or the Amber room stolen from Catherine the Great Palace in Russia. The one that is there is a copy.
Thanks to JD and Erik for all the time, work and research contained in each video.
One could just think, how much looted art does one person need..? That Gettysburg Museum collection is just mind boggling. Great video, as usual. Keep up the good work.
Your pronounciation of Wiesbaden was spot on!
These Berchtesgaden videos have been terrific. You've really knocked them out of the park!
Thanks!
When I see your vids drop in the AM, I know its gonna be a good day! Thanks for everything brother, stay safe out there!
I have a film on my watch list on Prime about the real Monuments Men. I haven't watched it yet. I have so many to watch, just not enough time.
It's an excellent movie and there is a book too.
Many thanks JD and Eric for bringing us yet another chapter that is not talked about much. You guys are awesome!
Our pleasure!
Erik and JD! Nothing beats this for history nerds!
I was not sure if there was a unit called the monument’s men. But, happy to know it was real. And the Art was returned. Thank you for this history JD. ❤️💯
There's a good movie with John Goodman under the same name from a few years ago. Can be watched online.
@@ameyring excellent book as well.
Really enjoyed the video mate really interesting mate can't wait for the next one
I have seen the movie, which led to reading about this. I am amazed by all of the information.
I hope that the pieces make their way back to their families.
Thank you.
I saw it also, I spent time in Brugg. I never realized the Madonna was stolen . Thankfully, it was returned to the cathedral.
I love how you go between the place and the museum. Realy intresting. 👍🙂🇸🇪
@The_History_Underground thanks, what does that mean? 🇸🇪
That had to be one hell of a 50th bash for Goering, sadly with looted stuff.
Love the way the Monuments Men carefully wrapped up every valuable piece of art before chucking it in the back of their truck.
😅
So interesting.
I'd surely like to go thru those papers and just look in amazement.
Great video, as they all are. Fascinating history. Historical items should be shared for everybody to see, not stuck in private collections.
What a great series you guys are doing here. I'm really enjoying it. Well done.
Fantastic as always. Easily one of the best channels on RUclips. Thank you.
@The_History_Underground oh? What's my prize?
Blessed for another video from the best history channel out there. Keep rocking and rolling, JD
Great content mostly forgotten. Thanks for all you do to bring history to the forefront. I'll never forget the sign I saw whilst in the service bagging the bodies at the Jonestown Massacre. "Those Who Do Not Remember The Past Are Condemend To Repeat It". Have a good day.
Thank you J.D. and Erik!🙋♂️ This episode reminds me of the Burt Lancaster movie, The Train, where there intro of the movie shows boxes filled with infamous artists works being loaded on the train by the Nazi party.🏍💨
Great Movie!
Hopefully most of that art was returned to where it was stolen from. I'm pretty sure there are still ongoing disputes over artwork between the original owners or heirs and the collectors or museums that ended up with it.
Another out-of-the-park great job a plus for you guys has usual obviously I wish the videos were longer and in more depth those pictures, are great military trucks and jeeps tell a story believe it or not just by what the men did to modify them for their purpose
Very interesting to learn about this. To my ears it sounds like these men did a monumental task!
Finally had a chance to visit your Museum this past Sunday......Wow!!
Amazing work! I immediately recognized thé train tunnel and hotel from the movie.
Always fascinating love the monuments men.I went to Thomas Carr Howe H.S.his son was part of the monuments men. Here in indy. God bless these brave men 🙏🏻 ❤️💙🤍
Looking at the guest list, It's a shame Allied Intelligence didn't know where Goering's 50th Birthday party was taking place and arrange for the SOE to gatecrash it.
Another great history lesson JD and Erik.
It's a shame you can't hit the like button more than once.
You can, but whatever.
What a task to try and return priceless items to their rightful owners, I wonder if the detractors of the USA know these things. Great story JD.
Hey, you guys should do a video on Herman Goerings WW1 aircraft collection….
Best channels for war history on you tube hands down you! Amazing content!
I never realized this had happened in such a large scale until watching Monuments Men ! Thank again for another excellent video.
Oh boy*new sub... Can't wait to binge🎀🤘🏼
I have to go see Eric's museum.
Love seeing the before and after pictures. Thanks for taking us along. 👍👍👍👍👍🍻
Any idea what percentage of the art was returned to the original owners? Just curious.
Proud to be related to Robert Kelley Posey, a Monuments Man
I have been watching this channel for months and just realized the museum is an hour from my house!
Thanks for the video JD. Was wondering about the door on the building that housed the art, it looks like the Star of David. Do you know what that building is used for now? Kind of ironic to me.
Thank you for this great vid.
What a bad man. This story always makes me cry. So many people are dead and unable to be returned. Jest a sick man.
I spent a year there in the US Army in 1970. Never to return.
Hopefully everything taken was cataloged and gotten back to it’s rightful owners.
Really enjoyed this one. Thanks again JD and Eric for another great video.👍😁
*its
It wasn't.
Many pieces were sold to collectors and to museums, which is why it is hard to return to the pre WWII owners
@@kina18😢
Mr. Mike Morris (RIP) used to own that sign. I used to help him cataloging his huge collection.
This series has been amazing Thanks so much
The Army is starting up the Cultural Protection Program (CCP) through the Civil Affairs 38G program. It traces its lineage back to the Monuments Men. The patch used now is even the same one from back in the day.
Another brilliant video, guys! Exceptionally well done.
Enjoyable Movie - Monument Men. Absolutely amazing how they set out to Rape, Pillage and Destroy everything they touched for a Mad Man's Dream. Shame about the Artwork that never was recovered and/or got destroyed. The 101st did a good job destroying them and their sick dream. Good One. Thanks.
Good job with this video. Keep those videos coming very educational and fun to watch to.
Another very interesting video JD. I've seen tbe "Monuments Men" movie 2 or 3 times & really enjoyed it. I've also read about half of the book but one day when commuting to work my water bottle leaked & damaged it so much that it was unreadable afterwards ! 😱
More bucket list places to visit that you're prepping me for! Damn good videos! Keep it up!
& Eric...leave some stuff for the rest of us to (hopefully) own! 🤣
😅👍🏻
Thanks JD and Eric. That was great! The film footage had me mesmerized. The "bad guys" sure did know how to rape, pillage, and plunder.
I loved the Monuments Men movie. Even though it was more a Hollywood caper film and somewhat fictionalized, it depicts a much different era than our own, given the destruction of antiquities in Iraq and Afghanistan...
Just spell bound with this string of great shows!!!!!!
More amazing content, always a joy when I see your stuff come up.
Love this channel. Thank youb& keep up the great work. Really appreciate d 😊👌
Thank you! Will do!
There were quite a few pieces that were actually looted by the Americans when the monuments men were working on cataloging. They haven’t been seen since.
As someone who has worked in the industrial setting, the name siemens on one of the lists jumped out to me.
I wonder how much of the looted items would have survived the war if left with the original owners. We were fortunate to recover as much as we did.
You are doing a great job. Alot of places dont go into the detail you do. Great work. Keep it up. And dont forget about us Canadians here.
I appreciate that!
Thank you both for this outstanding video. We cannot thank you enough. Happy Easter too you and God bless 🙏
Many of these railcars were broken into by the locals and took items, they even cut out pieces of the tapestries they pulled partially out side the rail car doors.
Cool artifacts thx for sharing👍
Would be pretty rad to see you go to any other possible locations that art was found.
Loved this episode, just a side question there was a shot with a set of golf clubs in the background at the museum, what’s the story on those?😊
Bought and read the book long before they made the movie. Also saw the movie. Still have the book in my library.
Amazing that an Animal such as Goering would have an Eye for Fine Art .

Next vid you should visit the Vatican and check out its basement.
I wonder what they've got in the attic? 🤣
Hallo, greetings from Siegen, Germany, my hometown. Here played a great part of the Moments Boys. Weiter auf deutsch. Der Schatz wurde in einem Stollen, Hainer Hütte versteckt. Nur wurde nicht an Orginal Orten gedreht.
Read " A straight Life " by Art Pepper who was a jazz saxophonist in the marines in Ww2 ,in Paris as an MP with the American soldiers after their " liberation " He saw the yanks out of control with rapes and assaults the order of the day,and night .As for looting he saw the yank soldiers loot rob, steal and plunder everything not nailed, down ,and most of what was nailed down .He says in his book that it embarrassed him and made him ashamed to be part of an army that " liberated " a city.If you don't believe it gr the book yourself and read it !!
Going to throw this out there. It was alluded to in an early message, if all these pieces of art wasn’t stolen and stored by the you-know-who’s, what do you think would have became of them. Look at the utter decimation of cities throughout Europe during the war. How many masterpieces that wasn’t stolen has been lost forever. Those murdering thugs from Germany deserve whatever punishment they receive in he## but at least they did save some important pieces of art.
Hi! I really like you docu stories here on RUclips! I have only one question, wil you make a film docu about thé battle of thé bulge? I go each year to thé Ardens tot visit som battle places and museums and i have one you really have too see. It's in Bastogne and ist about thé 101st airborne andin thé basement they made a replica of a shelter. En jou wil dit there for few minits en het thé feeling of thé bombardement on Bastogne on kristmes 1944. It's really heart taking.
Be looking for that this coming fall.
I am gonna bet that the door to the hotel is new. I cannot imagine that Mogen David [star of David] was there during the war.
Another awesome video ! Thank you o much 👍
that was a great movie and those guys were real unsung heroes...
Thought Did the Monuments Men check ceilings to see if the art was blended in and I pray ALL the hard work is returned.
Some of the Art was returned to the relatives of the deceased victims. In many cases, there were no survivors. The Museums grabbed a lot of the paintings and sculptures. I forgot the name of Goerings premier Art" Buyer ".
I watched a movie awhile ago and it was called the Monuments men, was it based on the 101 st Airborne
Another great video JD Thank you sir
Thanks, guys.
This may sound like a stupid question, but why do you think Goering went to the trouble of loading it onto rail cars and taking it down to his bunker? Meaning: do you think that he was hiding it so that he or others could retrieve it later (thinking that they would win the war or that in some other way he would be exonerated and would be able to retain the "collection") or do you think he knew that the war was lost and so he was protecting it from possible damage from air raids, shelling, etc? Or a little of both.
I guess that's one thing about this time period (spring 1945) that always amazes me: the Nazis had lost the war; there was just the formality of surrender and a ceasefire. Yet in so many ways they went on as if it was going to continue and they were going to prevail.
Are those the original front doors with the Star of David in the centre?
Good show! Did You also found the location of the bunker at the beginning of the film. Maybe in the Am Wemholz area short distance from Haus Hubertus
great stuff chaps
Wow Great video thank you JD Erik
That was a really good Movie
Great shot at 6:41 of hot legs behind the old masters painting.
Look closely at the Double door front. It's a star of David at the entrance to the building!!
More so the Monuments Men and THEIR stealing of already looted art. It’s on record that considerable amounts of gold ‘disappeared’ between being found and it actually being shipped to be stored.
