    I used to watch this video at home in the Midwest, dreaming of the chance to come to New York and see a show like their set at 55 Bar. Now I live in the city and have seen Adam and Chris play together at 55 Bar. Honestly a dream come true. I'm so thankful for the constant inspiration and joy that this documentary brings, let it remain on RUclips forever!

    Chris to me is a modern jazz giant, and this is a great and intimate film about his band. All of the players are great, I especially love Adam's guitar playing.

    @14: 14
    “My practicing really consists of recording myself,(like) having a certain thought in my mind about what kind of feeling I want to express, and then recording what that sound like and then hearing it back, what sounds true, what sounds false (you know) what exactly is working and what’s not. Some of it’s not even about the notes; it’s about trying to find the frame of mind that I have to be in to express the things I want to express.”

    • @davidarteagamusic5991

      This is what makes Chris Great
      not his super-human technical mastery of the saxophone
      not his seemingly infinite knowledge of the Canon of Jazz
      not his boundless improvisatory inventiveness
      but simply the refusal to play anything that does not feel true to him…
      For me there is no one in jazz today that can hold a candle to Chris. I wish there was, I am searching constantly for more truth…

    Also, this Adam Rogers is a beast, too. Can't believe I didn't know about these guys.

    It makes absolutely no sense but I'm ridiculously proud of Chris Potter. In Columbia, SC, circa late '80s, I was an absolute hack mucking about in school jazz bands and he was already a sax god, gigging weekly at a downtown venue and already immersed in student performing groups at USC. We are basically the same age and hail from the same neck of the woods, but that's about all we have in common.

    In my opinion, Potter is one of the three giants of contemporary saxophone playing: Joshua Redman, Mark Turner and Chris Potter. And I had no idea Nate Smith was as inventive and organic a composer as a drummer!

  • @monktrane325

He is a really nice guy with a terrific technique-he has really payed his dues and fully deserves the recognition that he is now getting. A great upload!

    This has been bugging me - do the bars of "7" at the end of the phrase in tweet really modulate to the pulse of the triplet, or are they just kinda fudged. either way killing

    • @tadhgleahy2264
      @tadhgleahy2264 3 года назад

      It is actually weird how it does kinda sound in between. I reckon its not a modulation and they're going for the groups of 7 16th notes thing (12,12,123). Although what do i know.

    • @blapis89
      @blapis89 3 года назад

    As I said, it's the solo section in the middle of the song. Pop Tune #1 begins quietly with a beautiful melody and then, at around the six-minute mark, there's a dramatic shift and it takes off into a blues/funk groove. Keep in mind, it's an improvisation so the track on the cd is different than the live performance but, I can assure you, it's just as dynamic.

    Here is the "Manual" on how to burn. Listen to what the guys are talking about, it's all here. It ain't about getting off by spewing licks you shedded, but listening to what is really coming out and get out of the way so it can resonate through the band. Good luck on that, right? Not only is the music harmonically and rhythmically complex but thanks to those excellent drums this music is actually very accessible, in my opinion more accessible than ultrahang which makes me wonder why they didn't record songs like tweet and bounce and then release them on i-tunes. They may have incredible talent but I think that their business sense is poor.
