    Daisy got nerfed harder than Peach. For the kids who don't know, Daisy used to have unique properties with her turnips that allowed for high percentage combos/kill setups but they took that away from her and made both of their turnips the exact same.

      Yes, yes! This really hurts. Especially since she is very demanding on a player's hands. You break your hands to get damage w/ combos and once they stop working (around 110-150%) have to play neutral to earn a kill against heavy zoning, DLC & disjoints. Mind you she is much lighter (and weaker KO wise) than a character like NESS! She even *lost a kill throw she's had in every game* ! Really unfortunate how this character has been treated :/

Pikachu was always better than Pichu no matter what people say. The nerfs to his f-tilt I didn’t really care about, but the fact that his hurtbox is now bigger than pika’s is absurd. That being said I still love him and play him instead of Pika for principle alone.

  • @EmptyHand49
    @EmptyHand49 Год назад +9

    Looking back at Ultimate's balancing, it's clear the developers based their nerfs on how well a few players utilized them. Now they've left characters like Steve, Kazuya, Terry, and Aegis run amok since they stopped with the patches.

  • @Driff97
    @Driff97 2 года назад +12

    One character no one talks about in terms of nerfs is argably the first one to recieve a massive blow to his gameplan: Mega Man. He's perfectly fine now, but when the game launched? He had the potential to be obnoxiously toxic thanks to how special moves worked but specifically Leaf Shield. To put simply, you can shoot out pellets, jump, and during the pellet animation you can cancel it with a special move. What this meant is you can walk up to someone with melon's, and by canceling it to Leaf Sheild, you can shield poke them constnatly or deal insane damage. In other words, he was a better R.O.B.. Having the far range options with said pellets and other projectiles, but insane close range pressure to boot.
    In 2.0.0, Mega Man only recieved 1 change, but that change was enough to bring him down a lot and stagnate his gameplan, as he can no longer cancel jumping pellets with special attacks.
    Chrom also deserves a mention since the "Chromside" was significantly toned down in said patch.

      Such a fall from grace. I dont even know if I'd say she's top 10 anymore. I think she's a gatekeeper for it. If Peach *doesnt* make your character sweat, they're probably top 10.

  • @BlankPapers
    @BlankPapers 2 года назад +9

    I understand where the devs were coming from when nerfing each character. At the same time though, because of the nerfs and the added dlc characters, they weren’t future proofed for the inevitable overlooked power of the new inclusions or even a good amount of the power creepers of the late game. I think they do great stuff when they buff characters, but I think they still need to work on nerfing characters carefully.

  • @John12346
    @John12346 2 года назад +8

    Definitely an HM to Ivysaur here. While he didn't receive *too* many nerfs overall, each one was laser-focused on a core aspect of the character's gameplan. Razor Leaf receiving more cooldown, Dair becoming significantly weaker on the sourspot, and Vine Whip becoming weaker in general very significantly impacted his neutral, edgeguarding, and throw confirms, respectively.
    Was it all deserved? Probably; that character was a menace lmao. But it definitely did hurt his and PT's overall viability as a result.

    • @jonathanlgill
      @jonathanlgill 2 года назад +4

      That's a good point. I do think early Ivysaur's gameplay was over-centralized around those few options, and nowadays PT is better balanced in the uses of all 3 Pokemon. With the rumors of Ivy doing well against Steve, Pokemon Trainer might still be a relevant secondary character to use. I could imagine Ivysaur doing well against other Fighter Pack 2 characters as well.

    WFT might count as an honorary. We really don't know how good the character would have been if they hadn't reverted soccer ball, but that change alone had pretty much the entire WFT community ready to throw out MU notes, gameplans, and the general consensus on the best way to play the character because of how drastically it changed all of gameplay states. And then they put out a specific patch to un-DLC her.

    I remember at early Smash playing Pichu and Olimar and thinking "Yeah, I can main these guys, they are cool and fun" and after practicing and labbing them for a few months with my friends and alone for a small local tournament, the patch dropped and I was like "no big deal, it shouldn't have changed much anyways"
    Then I saw the patch video about Pichu and saw him getting destroyed, Olimar not so much, he needed the nerfs for his size and annoyance, but Pichu didn't deserve the size, kill power and self damage nerfs. One would've been fine, not all.
    I still play them for fun but never for serious tournament play

  • @vjoe5389
    @vjoe5389 2 года назад +6

    A couple more honorable mentions I would've included are Ivysaur, Min Min, and Inkling.
    Ivysaur is still probably the best overall Pokemon in PT's arsenal, but they're no longer as broken as they once were. PT overall is still an amazing character and I'd personally say the trade of nerfing Ivysaur and buffing Charizard was a good thing in the long term. I personally believe they're still top tier, but rather than relying on Ivysaur for everything you now gotta learn all 3 characters to get results.
    Min Min is still arguably top tier, but she's nowhere close to being the menace she once was, and she's no longer in the league of being potentially the best character like she was during her early Smash career.
    Inkling never really got any major tweaks to their kit, but their nerf is moreso thanks to the Smash community slowly evolving and learning the matchup over time. People finally learned how to deal with roller and ink, and Inkling players started having problems with getting early stocks in a similar vain to characters like Pikachu, Shiek and Peach/Daisy. They had to work HARD or absolutely CHEESE their opponents if they wanted to take away stocks early, which just became too inconsistent. Inkling is still arguably high tier, but they're no longer the top tier threat that they used to be and almost everybody knows how to beat them.
    It seems my prediction of Pichu and Olimar being the top 2 most nerfed Ultimate characters came true, but this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone if they paid attention to the Ultimate scene during the early days. I'm also not surprised that Wario made it on this list, but I thought he'd be lower on the rankings. I was pleasantly surprised to see Peach/Daisy on the list, but in hindsight they're an obvious pick for being a candidate of the most nerfed Ultimate character. I'm also surprised to see ZSS, but I think they should've been in the honorable mentions rather the actual list. I would've personally replaced her with either Inkling or Ivysaur.

    Mega Man to me is the most nerfed character. When he was nerfed, he lost his macro cancel tech which allowed him to cancel any of his grounded pellets into anything he wanted, an easy leaf shield cancel that only required him to skid forward after running and throw metal blade, and leaf shield got 2 frames of startup and end lag added.

    I wanna point out that saying zss’s nair was completely unpunishable is true on paper but never in practice: short hop multiplier, staling, spacing and height of hitbox landing all play a huge part in how safe a move is
    Sure, there WERE cases where you could get the perfect unpunishable nair, but most of the time it would have been a -3/-4 move, contrary to the now consistent -5/-6 (-4 on paper)
    Was still an amazing move though, -4 for a disjoint kill confirm/combo tool is incredible

    In my honest opinion, I don't think Pichu was ever that strong to begin with. Even before the nerfs, Pichu representation and results where starting to fall off, with VoiD's 2nd placement at Genesis, only one month after the game released, still being to this day the character's peak, and Pichu players as a whole was getting more inconsistent results. VoiD expressed concerns on staying with the character due to how risky the character is, fully dropping the character afterwards due to the nerfs.
    The character benefitted heavily from the early Ultimate meta where we were still figuring out the game, and due to new-toy syndrome (Pichu might as well have not existed in Melee) the character was developed super early on as a result. Players eventually figured out how to deal with Pichu's tricks and gameplan (such as with ftilt spam at the ledge). However, more importantly, more characters got their punish games optimized with time and even further buffed from game updates, exploiting Pichu's poor defenses more and making Pichu's own merits less attractive at the same. Why play Pichu, when you can play characters with similar punish games that isn't made out of paper, doesn't have stubby range, or doesn't hurt itself with every move?
    tl:Dr, Pichu's drastic fall from the meta was inevitable and expected. The nerfs simply accelerated the process. Even with the a lot of the recoil changes reverted (Agility actually deals less recoil damage than vanilla Pichu does), it didn't really change anything about the character's standing in the meta.

    I agree with this list. Anyone that knows anything about 1.0.0 would know that pichu and olimar were the most heavily nerfed, even though olimar was actually worse off for a while because the bigger hurtbox caused full shield to get poked. Wario and zss are an easy 3 and 4, but I'd personally say that joker is number 5. Although joker went from number 1 to maybe number 1 still, definitely top 5, the nerfs were insane. Losing guns hit boxes was so detrimental and arsene going down quicker is so much worse than what happened to peach imo (even though I think the change was a cool way to do it)

  • @jonathanlgill

    I'm not even sure if Pichu is mid-tier these days. You gotta figure he takes about 15% from self-inflicted damage every stock (maybe more!), and considering that you can kill him 10-15% earlier than most of the cast, it feels like you're playing a handicap mode. Plus his small hitboxes are more of a problem in today's meta than the early meta.

      Zelda pre-quarantine did actually have a decent place in the meta, thanks to players like ven and Mystearica getting some pretty decent results and wins with her (I'm pretty sure ven took a set off of ESAM at one point).
      However despite her reputation as an online warrior, she made very little impact during the quarantine era, and post-quarantine era, Zelda players have struggled to obtain the same success. ven started to complete in less major events and doesn't perform very well in them. Mystearica mostly moved on from Zelda, now maining Palutena.
      Despite this being easily the best version of Zelda in the series, she still possess as a lot of the same issues that plagued her in the previous games, which unfortunately mostly comes down to how her moveset is designed.

      @@Surgemaster2012 she definitely has some noticable weaknesses, the biggest that immediately come to my mind are the loads of starting/ending lag on her moves and inconsistent sweet spot hits with many of her kill options. But personally I feel she more than compensates with crazy kill power, top tier recovery, and her ability to take control of a stage and constantly force your opponent to play rock, paper, scissors with you! She has several ways you can play her viably and so many mix-up options. I can't help feeling like her lack of top level player representation is the main reason people believe she's only good online LOL. And when you get the displaced phantom tech committed to muscle memory (which really isn't too hard with a little practice) it removes one of the biggest weaknesses on an already broken move LOL. Now, if only I could consistently land her teleport cancel tech, she'd be God tier IMHO.
      Basically, I really liked her to Sephiroth in a lot of ways (except better recovery options), basically: stage control, trap setups, and a high-risk/high-reward style character. Played correctly (patiently) and she's one of the scariest opponents to face...

It's because she's *very* hard technically on your hands (arthritis is a real thing Peach WILL give you) her only kill move b4 150% is sweetspot Upsmash or an offstage gimp, and all of DLC pack 2 was practically made to counter her. It's really unfortunate watching players who are def top 10 like Mute Ace suffer and struggle with an over nerfed character :/ I think Smash was perfect around when Byleth released, truly a perfect game.

Is he supposed to be a meme or an actual fighter and if he is supposed to be a real fighter then he is far too close in design to Pikachu. For being a mascot of the entire Pokemon franchise, they keep finding ways to do Pikachu wrong from making him a middle form rather then a starter form and giving Raichu an evolution or Smash in general. Pichu was was too much cannon and not enough glass at the start and now Pichu is just all glass and no cannon.

    • @vidswithliam4243
      @vidswithliam4243 2 года назад

      @@Clarkbardoone wario legitimately had so so so many more confirms into waft. There was dair half waft which is absurd out of a multihit mixup on shield that was guaranteed at any percents. He also had fair half waft and up tilt waft was legit free most of the time. All of his nair combos into waft were also a lot more consistent. He even had fucking up throw waft. Dair waft in particular also made falling up air a way better option because it made people hold shield longer than they may have needed to because of the fear of the multihit mix up. I genuinely think Wario was top 1 if his players implemented more of a time out strategy and weren't afraid to waft on stocks one and two. He still might have had some hard matchups like sonic and joker and stuff, and I kinda think that Kazuya for example would have still ended up being a very good counterpick for him in today's meta, but he was legitimately so insanely swingy and explosive prepatch to the point that I do think he was likely best in the game.

    • @vidswithliam4243
      @vidswithliam4243 2 года назад

      @@KodakKid33 Some of this is true, though I would argue that not only was her out of shield game better prepatch because of the nerf to the startup of boost kick, she also is not a character that really needs to shield often. In addition, I do not think her matchup spread back then was particularly bad at all. She had, and still has some of the most insane defense in the game, which is effective against basically every character (with the exception of pyra/mythra prob but they didn't exist then). On top of that defense though, she also was extremely explosive because of how broken nair was. Nair flipkick was legitimately one of the most broken confirms in the game back then because you could get it off of a long ranged minus 2 aerial that also had a shit ton of hit lag so it wasn't even difficult to hit confirm. Nair also was literally safe on parry which was insane. And she also never actually had to nair, she could mix it up with zair and wavebounced paralyzer or side b.
      I will concede on the ledgetrapping front, she is bad at that, but back then her corner pressure was so insanely broken and led into kills so so so easily that it didn't really matter. Also yeah her multihits do not work, but that also got worse postpatch because of the boost kick change and that is definitely the worst one to fall out of lol.

    Would you consider something like Leo dropping Joker to be a meta nerf to the characters at top level? While the character is still strong its is no longer as relevant if a matchup at least for the top players who see likely to encounter Leo in bracket. Of course, he has still pulled out the character when he feels he needs it, but the character is less relevant of an encounter, aside from Sharp's use of him, and Marss and Leo's' use of him as a secondary. Of course this really only affects the level of play these players exist at

    • @eddyspaghettiii
      @eddyspaghettiii 2 года назад

      Well yeah top players don't really have to study the matchup too much anymore cause you don't see him as much besides marss and zackray.
