  • Neutral specials are often one of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's most important types of moves and a huge part of their characters' kits. The Smash world has plenty of tier lists, discussions, etc. discussing their power, but their animations don't always get the attention they deserve. Today, we fix that by exploring every neutral special animation in Smash and ranking them on a tier list!

    Thanks for watching everyone! This one ended up being a bit of a beast to try and wrangle in, hopefully the time resulted in something fun. Also just a heads up that even as long as the video is, a lot of stuff still got cut (the one that has come up most often in the comments is the charged version of Blurring Blade). I actually did look at essentially every alternate form in the game and excluded some of them in editing if they didn't change my mind at all. In retrospect this isn't as obvious to viewers as it felt to me and in the future I'll probably be a bit more consistent. Let me know what you thought!

    I think the main reason Mii Gunner's Gun isn't as animated as the ones from the space animals is because Mii Gunner has many different costumes with very different gun designs, having to add (different) details to all of those would be so much work i can understand why they didn't. This might also be why Charge Blast spawns the projectile so far away from the gun, its to accommodate for the different designs and lengths of the gun in all costumes, it probably looks better on the costumes with longer guns

    For shulk's sword blade vs hand for buster and smash art, my interpretation is that for smash art, he's not powering up the blade itself, just swinging it with more power. Thus higher knockback, and it affects his hands. With buster, he makes the blade itself more deadly, so it does higher damage, but there's nothing different about his swing, so no extra knockback. It's like if you swung a baseball bat. Smash art makes him stronger so he can swing the bat harder, so his hands. Buster art is like attaching spikes to the bat so it does more damage.

    • @jonathanlgill
      @jonathanlgill 2 года назад +15

      It also helps the opponent--Smash is clearly the most threatening Monado Art they have to play around, and having the red glowing on his fists makes it very clear that he's in Smash Art.

    • @adv78
      @adv78 2 года назад +16

      Also Buster Art in XC directly affects the Monado too, being an special attack that makes it bigger and does a lot of dmg, so buster "buff" is canonically in the sword itself.
      Tbh i would prefer if the Speed glow was in his legs while Jump in his feet so they would be all different, would make more sence too, since running fast is much more associated with leg strenght than feet.

      This interpretation Is not technically correct. What the mondo does is that it changes the physics and the properties of the universe so he is swing the blade the exact same way in smash art but the the that is changing is the universe itself making it do more knockback and less damage

    I believe you misinterpreted Wolf's recoil animation, it is in fact there it's just that he keeps the recoil energy into the blaster itself hence the huge swing up. The reason why Fox and Falco's body moves back a little is because they're holding the blaster steady so the recoil energy transfers into their body more just so they can keep their aim. Wolf uses the blaster's recoil to his advantage as he also uses it as an attack with the blade.

    I thoroughly disagree about corrin's dragon mask, I think how over-the-top it is perfectly suits the dragon abilities and because of that it's one of my favorite kirby hats. It makes him look like some world-destroying ball of death. It's a mess but I think that's kind of the point, to give off a bit of eldritch horror vibes. But that'll just be different opinions

    • @mettatonex7221
      @mettatonex7221 2 года назад +4

      I don't really like the design of the complete dragon transformation of Corrin, I think it has bizarre proportions, its limbs bend it weird ways, and its overall too scraggly to pass off as powerful as it is, plus it's missing a lot of the bits that are used from Corrin's dragon fang moves. I do think the head looks pretty cool, but I also see where Mock is coming from; my main issue is that it doesn't look like the head of a sentient being, more like the helmet that a Power Rangers villain would wear. If they were smitten with the general body type of full-dragon Corrin, I would have gone with a design more along the lines of Arceus or Dialga from Pokemon.
      Having said all of this, just from a purely visual and conceptual standpoint, I think Corrin is the coolest Fire Emblem character on the roster; almost all of her attacks involving the dragon fang are incredible looking, and her Omega Yato sword attacks aren't bad either. Personal favorites being her chainsaw-to-piercing stab Forward Smash, her graceful yet powerful wing bash Back Aerial, and her incredibly monstrous Dragon Fang Shot.

    • @JacobPDeIiNoNi
      @JacobPDeIiNoNi 2 года назад +6

      @@mettatonex7221 yeah your power rangers comparison is very accurate. And I understand not liking how scrawny the dragon form looks, although for me that’s part of the appeal, it makes it appear almost like a skeleton especially with the detached lower jaw which just adds to the weirdness and creepiness.
      Also, Im pretty sure the design is based on a Kirin, which is a mythological creature with elements of both deer and dragons. Which would explain the weird leg angles, they seem to be deer-like, as well as the horns on the mask. It’s a strange design that’s for sure

    One minor thing that really bugs me about Bowser Jr's cannon is that they didn't use the super distinctive "ba-Boom" cannon sound effect from the cannons in the airships of the Mario games or bullet bills. Even though they don't always use that sound effect in all the modern Mario games I think it would have added a lot of character to the move similar to Mario's fireball having the old-school fireball sounds from Mario games.

    Just a couple notes:
    - The charge-up to DK’s punch actually spins faster towards the end. It’s a nice touch in line with moves like Shuriken of Light that accelerate, but this is also how the move looked in, of all things, Subspace Emissary. The way DK swings his arm when he’s about to punch Diddy out of harm’s way is strangely reminiscent of this Ultimate animation in a way I love.
    - Kinda bothered by how much of Rosalina’s face is covered during her charge-up. I wish her body and head tilted backwards or more towards camera, so that we can see her one eye during more of the charge-up than just the very end.
    - In Xenoblade, Monado Enchant (which despite the name, seems to be what Buster is based on) is an effect placed on Shulk and his allies’ weapons, to let them cut through enemies their gear otherwise bounces off of. As a result, I kinda like Buster only lighting up the sword and not the hands, like Smash.
    - Kinda wish Kirby got plush Pikmin in the same vein as the plush Kazooie. Maybe for other moves, too?
    - Like you said about White Kirby with Robin’s copy ability, I think a couple skins kinda make it harder to look at certain animations. As cool as the Dark Link skins are, for example, almost everything is the same shade that it’s easy to look at it all as one blob. It’s also really easy to miss how Toon Link’s bow goes straight into his front foot this way, too.
    - Huge agree on Daisy. Why DIDN’T they give her a Shy Guy or something instead of Toad? Maybe make her look more like she’s sending them forward instead of cowering?
    - Not enough love given to the smooth animation transition from unshaved MockRock to shaved MockRock. Very nice swap from one to the other, and the coffee mug on Frame 3+ really helps hide the missing facial hair. Good sound design on the sip, too.

      There's only one kazooie, but there's plenty real Pikmin and Lumas so I don't think they need to be plushies on Kirby. would be a nice touch though, since they die after use.

    A couple points of kirby hat trivia:
    -There's actually a character who wears that exact Lucario hat in Pokémon Battle Revolution, so that's a pretty nifty touch
    -The plush/hand puppet Kazooie is actually also seen in Banjo-Tooie, where it's used in multiplayer versions of the minigames; for the FPS-mode ones, it's what characters other than Banjo use in lieu of a live Kazooie to shoot eggs with
    (also, I feel like that thing Greninja is doing -- which also a canon animation -- is less actually drawing water from its legs than just mimicking the motions of a ninja pulling shurikens out of their pants)

    Also, why gunner's cannon doesn't have any flaps or steam etc. moving is likely cus the cannon changes per costume, and none of them share the exact same features so they have to go with a default "no extra animations" sadly. Would look odd if cuphead's finger started smoking from flaps that don't exist, you know?

    roy's feet pretty much serves as a indicator point to where the explosion willa ctualyl take place. its why it is stretched out like that, so the player can know that the hitbox is a bit more pushed forward compared to the other moves of the character that have pretty close hitboxes. its also the reason why he holds his feet like that in the air. looks a bit unnatural with the step back? yea. makes sense, if you consider he is meassuring his reach? also yes.

    For Mythra, while charging the move, you can see ether lines become more visible on her body as she charges the moves. They’re more noticiable on her legs if you’re using a skin with darker leggings. Dunno why they didn’t do something similar for Pyra.

      It's because lighting buster is mythra's level 3 special in the game for all level 3 specials you can see the ether lines on the blades you can see the ether lines on her side b blazing end which is her level 3 in the game

      This was ripped from from the original game where the ether lines show up for all level 3 and 4 specials, which means Mythra's neutral-B, Pyra's side-B, and their Final Smashes. I love that they included this touch in Smash. It's extremely subtle, but it just adds that little extra bit of uniqueness to go with their more sci-fi aesthetic compared to other sword fighters. There's also a shine attached to the sword's Core Crystal, aligned with its orientation which gets more intense the longer the attack is charged, which I also love.

    1:03:47 Just wanted to point out here that this move is chargeable and I wanted to know if you had just forgotten about it or just found it not important enough to comment on? Either way I love this video, especially as an aspiring animator and smash fan
    Edit: 1:05:52 I'd imagine they didn't bother animating the default gun option when the character's outfit is fully customizable
    Edit 2: Very specific detail but I really like how when villager takes an Item out of their pocket and not a projectile they'll do the same animation from animal crossing, its just very cute
    Edit 3: 1:45:56 This is actually an odd detail lifted from the anime but Greninja actually makes the water shurikens in the shape of the shuriken pattern on its legs, not the sacs of water, so basically Greninja's using them as a mold. Either was it's super cool looking
    Edit 4 (holy crap this comment is long wow sorry): Another really cool detail I want to point out is for mac's KO punch, during the wind up, it almost looks like he might be feinting a straight punch and then coming in for the uppercut at the last second which is not only really cool if true, but also explains why it goes through shield

    Lucina’s animation leans back and lunges further because, if I recall correctly, she was shorter than Marth (and Robin and Chrom) in Smash 4, as that’s how it should be canonically in Fire Emblem. Due to Ultimate shifting her into Echo Fighter status, they needed to have her scaled up to match Marth’s Hurtboxes.

    Great video as always, MockRock! A couple fun facts about Inhale:
    - Kirby wearing Link’s hat actually predates Smash 64 by about 3 years, funnily enough.
    - I find the shrinking of the Links’ bows really interesting considering Archer Kirby has a larger bow. Byleth’s bow is much closer to Archer Kirby’s bow in terms of scale (which makes sense, since the Links’ inclusions in Smash predates Archer’s debut while Byleth was released after, so Kirby with a large bow seemed less weird).
    - A lot of people consider Kirby’s Samus hats as a reference to Beam Kirby before Super Star introduced Copy Hats (where the beam whip would come from his hand rather than a wand), and I’m going to use a similar justification for Shulk Kirby (though Kirby with anime protag hair is always a plus in my book). You’re right that it looks pretty bad on Mii Gunner Kirby, though.
    - Ness Kirby is just Makiko Ohmoto… imitating herself. It’s perfect.
    - Bowser Kirby’s pose is a direct reference to Fire Kirby’s pose in Super Star!
    - Part of me wishes they updated Doctor Kirby’s hat to included a lab coat since Planet Robobot gave us Doctor Kirby, the series’ most detailed Copy “Hat” to date.
    - I find it funny how there is literally an unmasked Meta Knight costume for Kirby and you chose Blue Kirby to show off his Copy Ability. I guess to avoid confusion?
    - Greninja Kirby’s hat is likely at least partially the way it is because iirc, Greninja was chosen as Smash 4’s Pokemon rep before Pokemon X & Y was released. The hat could be based on concept art, and they simply didn’t have the time to change it afterwards in either 4 or Ultimate. Or it could just be that the actual curve would look weird on Kirby ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
    - Cute story with Terry Kirby: back when new characters were added to Ultimate, Makiko Ohmato was never told the Copy Ability that she’s voicing lines for. However, she was able to correctly guess that Terry was coming to Smash because she recognized “Power Wave!” from memories of playing Fatal Fury with her brother.

    When you discussed Daisy and Peach you didn't acknowledge the facial expression in the move. I know the move doesn't exactly fit daisy but when peach bunkers down she looks shocked and a little worried. When Daisy does it she does it in a much more exaggerated way by closing her eyes and she even keeps smiling I think.
    I think this does actually convey her personality a little bit more than you said, but ultimately I think your placement still stands.

    I'm actually going to disagree with you on Olimar: I don't think it needed to be like that. I think the move should have been slower and have more pronounced effort on plucking the Pikmin out of the ground. Not just for the animation either; one of my complains about Olimar is that the finite nature of the Pikmin doesn't really matter as much because of how quick and easy it is to replace them (now granted it still makes it more difficult to control your specific inventory of Pikmin types, but Olimar will essentially never be helpless like this). So making it a bit more risky to pluck them might go a long way to emphasizing the importance of managing them properly to disincentivize putting them in riskier positions. But for the sake of the animation, it would make for a more faithful reference to the home series, put more weight behind the pluck, and would most certainly have more charm than what is already going on.

      I found it weird that he mocked Sora yelling the spells while both lucas and Robin ended up in S tier, but I do agree that those a pretty basic magic in the source game, specially the KH1 versions where they are based from, so they being on a B level seems fair

      @@VGInterviews I mean DDD Sora's voice isn't very good. I love KH and Sora and I don't like it at all.

    What's fun about luigi vs mario's animations is that luigi's throwing stance conveys the more controlled nature of the fireball, mario kinda just yeets it from the one hand, while luigi kinda charges it up with both hands then throws it out in a more directed way, you can see him almost aiming it with his thumb and finger.
