I came through in 1974. It has grownup. My wife wished to meet her grandfather as we were asked for any last words. We said yes. We six will meet you at this airport in six months. He became famous in Tilburg, newspaper, and all. Lived nine more months, as happy as can be. His huge family treated us with regal affection.
@@Samguy55 nah we don't. We have the Dutch Delta Works to thank for that. Look it up, it's very cool. The Delta Works protect us from the sea with dyckes and dams
Obviously the heat of the Israeli desert would counteract this but wouldn't the takeoff distance be less due to the denser air that far below sea level providing a bit more oxygen for engine power as well as slightly more lift?
Suppose we are approaching that Israeli airport 300 feet below sea level. What would the altitude tape on pfd show? Or in case of planes without glass cockpit, what would the altimeter needle do? Go further anticlockwise after hitting 0? Is the air any denser around that airport than at sea level?
The tape or needle just keeps going below zero. There are several airports in southern California (around the Salton Sea) that are below sea level. The lowest is Cliff Hatfield KCLR at Calipatria, 182 feet below sea level.
Are you talking about the lower extremity of the🦵leg, below the ankle, on which the person stads and walk. ...because I can't understand what are you talking about
Missed opportunity when you were talking about how flat the Netherlands are: Schiphol also has a pretty steep approach angle. In most other airports you typically approach the glide slope (the path you're supposed to follow when landing) by flying into it at a shallow angle, but at Schiphol you have to "drop" into it.
Does air get denser when you are below sea level? If it gets thinner at altitude, that should be the case - right? If so, is it easier for planes to take off from below sea level?
@captainjoe does it also improve the performance of the aircraft because the higher the airport is, the more difficult it is for an aircraft, then a low-lying airport will be better, right?
The answer is “it depends”. I recommend you watch the Mentour Pilot episode about American 1572 where he goes into a bit more detail on that since it’s relevant to that incident.
I live in the netherlands and kinda near schipol im pretty sure im below sealevel too but just about! I love schipol ngl and i never knew it was one of the biggest airports out there
If it had a elementary school you could raise a family there - not that you would want too of course - but Schiphol is a real earth-bourne model of an outdated futuristic space station... good and bad... (it has been up until pretty recently, noutoriously lax in screening the drug, laundered money and terrorist trades... If, back in the day, I was a mule of any of those I would take my chances a Schiphol...) Now, if you decide to deplane - say to visit Amsterdam - well then, welcome to your first of many fleecings by the dutch... Schiphol (and Bols) no thanks... (but I will always fondly remember the Delft and Vermeer gift shop, lol...) (and I am still a few euro ahead from my down time spent in that smelly burned-out casino...)
He is from Poland, from what I know, the first air line he worked for was near his home. The company was named AirBerlin (they filed bankruptcy and ceased operations).
Lol. Whatever. Forget this thing for a sec. The air was never controlled by Palestinians (that area specifically). Also it’s funny that from no where people like you involve politics and theories into educational content, which in fact, I hate.
Wikipedia says Bar Yehuda is 378 METRES below sea level, so 1240 feet below sea level. Yikes!
Yeah i landed their back in training and i'll tell you it is weird to land that low below sea level
@@potatoproductions4098please explain why is it weird
@@granand because the instruments usually indicate down to 0 but they go lower

Now I know why I have to wait 2 hours for my bag.
'Sea Level' is an artificial constant, sea level varies across the globe and the various oceans due to temperature and geography
It's just used as a universal indicator
I live near schipol! I live 10 meters under sea level as well!
I hope you people don’t have flood right?
@@Samguy55 nah we don't. We have the Dutch Delta Works to thank for that. Look it up, it's very cool. The Delta Works protect us from the sea with dyckes and dams
@@Samguy55Most of our country is below sea level so our country has taken a lot precautions. Our last flood was in 1953
I like this series

It's not like it is under water, therefore the air pressure is not much higher than on sea level.
You are absolutely right! When i flew there the air density was higher and in addition the air is high in humidity.
Also you can feel a difference in air density between there and anywhere else in the country

Yes Undercover Guy, the altimeter is just a barometer really so it doesn't care where zero is on the instrument.
Thanks for letting me know guys
Did you know that captain Joe always start off by saying “did you know that?”😂😂
Are you talking about the lower extremity of the🦵leg, below the ankle, on which the person stads and walk.
...because I can't understand what are you talking about
Bar Yehuda is 356 meters below sea level!!!
I've landed there several times.
Schiphol, was called scheepshel when it still was part of the sea, a lot of shipwrecks happened at that place
no its named cause nearby verry much wood was skipt
I've flown out of Thermal, California: -115 ft.
Very flat, and therefore ,Crosswinds 👌

And what about schiphol is the only airport i know with a shopping centre before !!! and after costums.
Actually Schiphol is a shopping mall on which aircraft are allowed to park on the parking lot.
Thank you.
There's also the Polderbaan, which has to be one of the coolest runways out there
Coolest…maybe, but landing at the Polderbaan also means at least 10 minutes of taxiing 😂

Yes, though of course weather conditions would cause variations as always
Been in AMS , so beautiful, thanks for sharing.
🧐eham🧐 airport is cool🧐
Also, the name Schiphol translates to ship to go crazy, from when there was still water and ships sank on that location.
Him: bar yehuda airfield
Me: *dead sea...?*
Schiphol means ship hole or ship hell, because it's a place where a lot of ships sank when Haarlemmermeer still existed there.
@captainjoe does it also improve the performance of the aircraft because the higher the airport is, the more difficult it is for an aircraft, then a low-lying airport will be better, right?
That's why they say... Everything good comes from the Netherlands!
Bar Yehuda is actually 1,233 feet below sea level
I love Schiphol...airport...
Extra fun fact: there is a bridge where you drive woth your car under the runway. Today i went under it while a 777 8x2 took off!!
That bridge is a taxiway. There is a road under a runway, but that road goes through a tunnel.
I am curios, how the altimeter measures altitude? Where the zero start from?
The answer is “it depends”. I recommend you watch the Mentour Pilot episode about American 1572 where he goes into a bit more detail on that since it’s relevant to that incident.
Having a rail station under the main terminal.
I always thought that airport was pronounced "Shrii-pol?"
You are right, Joe is wrong
I live in the netherlands and kinda near schipol im pretty sure im below sealevel too but just about! I love schipol ngl and i never knew it was one of the biggest airports out there
Im in Schipol right now!
Also schiphol is the largest airpory with only one terminal
Now we know
‘The Netherlands [is] flat’ - there’s only one Netherlands.
Its famous for delays and lost luggage 😅
Nice video, I live in a village next to Schiphol hahaha. Absolutely love it
Do a 787-10 cockpit have a heater inside it
i wish I could become a pilot.
So that means the aircraft performance is really good here?
High density high pressure?

How do you set below sea level on the altimeter
