This is not a good test. It wasn't done at the right temperature as the products are designed to operate the pistons sat for 2 hours in the solution
What's the right temperature? Let me know your expertise....
@@everydayirace Operating temperature, dumbass.
Engine operating temperature, followed by a heat soak, followed by more operating temperature.
@@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney how are you going to do that with only pistons?
@@namastelana5586 An oven?
The problem you have with brake cleaner is that you take all lubricant off as well and it is very hard on rings. If you use Sea Foam correctly, you will notice it is far better than the competition.
I've used Seafoam for a BUNCH of years, and still do, but the CRC stuff works considerably better for GDI intake valves, so I use it in addition to Seafoam on my GDI engine.
The Intake Cleaners work better when used as directed. They require at most is an ample heat curing time and some agitation during engine operation. It's good to see what the properties are when items are simply soaked.
Love watching the Racoon at 0:36 and listening to the birds at the end of the video. 👌🤣
These chemicals work best when the parts are hot after the engine has warmed up!
Ya he said that........
Do a next test with heating the CRC and Seafoam
The only problem is, they instantly evaporate when they make contact w/the hot parts.
Soaking in a cold engine seems to be the better option, perhaps overnight vs. just two hours.
Also too, do this just before you do an oil change, because these chemicals get into the oil.
Should get the motor good and hot, then pull the spark plugs as fast as you can and spray a bunch of the aerosol cleaner in on the hot engine and pistons. Yup.
As directed on the label… so your test is not actually “the best carbon remover” based on directions given, and you alter method of delivery and temperatures
crc has best results on hot engine running cleans GDI engines valves awesome
Been cleaning pistons for 45 plus years .. first clean in parts cleaner to remove all oil deposits so you have dry non oily parts. then toss in bead blaster with glass beads and pistons look like no no damage in minutes. you can also use soda blaster it works just as well might take a little more time but when done you do not have to worry about missing some of the glass beads and have it inside the new engine wiping out bearings like with glass beads the soda washes away with water and even if you miss some does no damage in assembled engine. glass beads is perfectly harmless to clean engine parts accept when mechanic is a filthy slob and doesn't remove all the grit. Newer style heads with SOHC or DOHC do not recommend glass beads unless you remove all the core plugs and run brushes through all the oil galleys and use compressed air and even then I use soda blasting or sonic cleaning (or both) too many places glass beads can get trapped and end up in assembled new engine. If your going to rebuild engine invest in tools and do side work to pay for the tools. wanna buy ultrasonic cleaner ? line up a few friends to pay to have fuel injrctors cleaned and invest in tool kit to replace the injector screens etc.. charge $12 each and $3 or so is all new seals and screens cost per injector use the profit to pay for the ultrasonic cleaning tool .. modern pcv valves on new cars are 50-75 each or more .. submerge pcv valve in ultrasonic cleaner for 30 minutes and good as new.. clean spark plugs and o2 sensors as well .. cleaner pays for itself within a week or 2 jobs .. and that's if you splurge for 22 liter model
Crushed walnut shells would be the better option vs. glass beads.
Piston rings are more important than the top of the piston.
I have a GSXR with this problem I’ve concluded that it needs to come apart instead of trying these products so thank you for the intelligent test on those whacky looking DI pistons sir .
Who really knows which is "best". I have a Hyundai Santa Fe with a 2.4 GDI engine and used the CR cleaner at about 50,000 miles (I'm pretty sure it had never been done) and the engine ran noticeably better, quicker starts, smoother idle, more power. I believe the "secret" is to use a intake cleaner every 5000 - 10,000 miles. If carbon is left to build up on intake valve back sides too much it's likely very difficult to clean off. I also installed a oil catch can to hopefully reduce the amount of build up in the future.
Yeah, regular treatment just before an oil change keeps the carbon low, and less likely for DI carbon to blow chunks into your turbo . Every 5 to 10K seams about right. Also Red Line Oil keeps vapor from your pcv and depositing in intake valves.
Used on my kia 1.6L NA 55k. Tank after crc gained my 4mpg to where it should have been. Definitely going on my maintenance scheduler.
Great advice right here!
I find that Zmax is the most effective for stuck rings and overall removal of carbon especially when used in both oil and fuel. As far as intake valves on DI engine’s the best course is preventing it from building up in the first place via cleaning every oil change.
how do you clean the valves on on GDI every oil change? You going to do a walnut blasting every 5,000 miles smart guy?
@@tinali9200 No! I spray seafoam thru the intake for a few soaking cycles and then give it the ole fashioned Italian tune up. It’s too low mileage for me to know for certain if that works yet. Only 180k smarta$$.
Interesting test. It would also have been interesting to see a control piston dipped in plain gasoline for the same time frame.
Or water
or urine
Seems like crc did a good job melting the carbon and not breaking off huge chunks. If in the engine those chunks can be harmful.
Never use braek cleaner to clean up valve or any carbon buildup , it will damage your valves ruber seal.
I think the best one is that product which do not leave chunks after disolving the carbon.even is working slower. That helps a lot,if you want to pour on your engine and leave it there overnight,or few days...no risk to make some scratches on Cylinder when turning on the engine, and all that disolved carbon is going down on oil panel, leaving clean all piston rings.
I agree.
Wondering, if the piston was warm inside a BBQ for 30 minutes at 250 degrees the results would be even better
Seafoam is the winner in my opinion. I’ve been using it for years… I do use brake parts cleaner if I take something apart but I don’t recommend putting it in your engine… lol
Did anyone notice the raccoon in the background. Lol
I just seen that lol
I can't find it, time line?
@@rexlee3368 beginning of video 😆
Did i seriously just see a racoon chillin in the background
great video thanks
Try easy-off oven cleaner
Valve grinding compund in the spark plug hole is the best way to eliminate carbon buildup, by far.
I usually use sand, and whatever gravel from the driveway that will fit down the hole... it's like spic-n-span clean after that!
🤦♂️🤦♀️🤦
Ha ha ha ha ha.
I just bought a gallon to clean up my sbc stroker
Nice job thank you
If you watch the video he explains the tests reasons and that they are not being used the proper way as said on the can. It's basically seeing what solvent attacks carbon the best.
i have a hyundai sonata, gdi engine. the carbon deposit got really bad to the point of misfires. I used one can of CRC, followed the instructions, then problem solved. have to be honest and give credit where it is due.
Thank you for your feedback.
Now mix all 3 together then try 2 at a time and see what happens.
Goto supermarket.
Buy can of spray foaming oven cleaner with caustic soda.
$4.
Job done.
Hopefully they work better during the combustion process.
agree engine has to be hot not cold .
Transmission fluid and acetone mixed together works amazing this stuff doesn't work
I'll have to try that, thank you.
He took two hours explaining the process
Wow!!!
I would have liked to have seen the results when all three to soak overnight.
TTTTODAY JUNIOR!
These soja sauces are pretty nasty you should wear cloves dude. Cool vid !
Cool...Where do we buy cloves?
Fantastic comparison keep up the good work
Thank you.
And this video is brought to you by CARQUEST WEAREVER BRAKE CLEANER!! Hmmmm👌👌👌👌
I think the best test would be to see the oil ring and other carbon build-up on the rings witch you didn't show at all. These are the parts you want cleaned!
I might do that, I have couple of filthy pistons
I use oven cleaner, works good
Hello, for this purpose use Berryman Chem-Dip Carburetor Parts Cleaner, its super best
On my Acadia the STP worked best. It also has a dispensing system that allows you to man the throttle at 1800 rpm.
Thank you, I'll have to try it out.
If I buy this kind of cleaner is usually just to clean the throttle body because there's no carb cleaner or its sold out...on a modern engine there is NO need to decarbon anything as a matter of routine. If you want to do everything you can to try and remove any excess carbon, dumping in Seafoam or Techroline in the tank every so often does it just fine. A healthy engine burns away carbon as fast as it gets created, if your engine has too much carbon its probably caused by too much short trips or driving in cold weather, where the engine doesn't warm up (at least once a month). And otherwise the car could be burning oil from leaky valve seals or some other engine issue. Fix the problem and the carbon will burn away on its own.
thank you for this video. Best thing is to burn alcohol instead . don't you think?
can you re-watch the vid at 5:24? I believe the carbon deposits side of the piston was completely out of contact with CRC. Looks like you had it tilted the wrong way inside the cup
Yup
That's right, I noticed it
Brake Fluid eats carbon too. More of a bugger to work with but it definitely dissolves carbon on items that are not otherwise going to be damaged by contact with brake fluid
Yes. Before I saw your comment I suggested it above. I thought I was thr only one who knew that! It just destroys piston deposits.
"These products say to use on warmed up engines, or are used while engines are at operating temp.. But I'll take room temperature fluid as a close enough....
With a simple soak try Permatex Gasket Remover.
BG stuff works really well I have found.
The CRC work really well.
Seafoam works much better with the heat from the engine. That's y the direction said let it heat soak 20mins!
Plain water works wonders on cleaning your combustion chambers. Induce at operating temperatures through a vacuum line.
@Scotsman282 without negative air pressure how does an engine run?
I like sea foam 👍🏻
I'll be doing more tests with Sea Foam.
so lets say i pull my spark plugs and spray brake cleaner on the piston, will the brake cleaner that does drip down into the sump eventually evaporate away or is there a risk of hydrolocking
the test laks STP Ultra and karosine in my opinion
During your 2 hour break I suggest you take a public speaking seminar 🤣
Adjust the view angle lower so we can see what is happening, other then that good vid
Thank you for your feedback.
Carb cleaner works amazing
So if you don't use it the way it was intended, it doesn't work well?
For dry cold cleaning use Chemdip
Do more tests, I enjoyed it very much.
The Raccoon just chillin tho
seafoam cleaned the rings best, very imortantly
Actually Krud Kutter does an excellent job of removing carbon buildup.
Shout out for rocking the Carquest brand brake clean. Advance Auto baby 👍
The clear winner here is the shop towel🤦🏼♂️ it probably better just to stuff the intake with a bunch of shop towels, no crank, no run, no carbon buildup 👍🏼
seafoam is naptha and gdi cleaner is diesel and gasoline.
you forgot the heat factor brother
Not really an apples to apples comparison my guy. Brake clean is not mean to be used in the combustion cycle, the other 2 are. Sea Foam Motor Treatment is made with 100% safe organic petroleum ingredients that work to clean and lubricate. It does NOT have harsh detergents or abrasive chemicals that can harm your engine or fuel system components. In summary, it’s a blend of three petroleum cleaning and lubricating oils that work together as a cleaner, lubricant, and to stabilize fuel. Brake clean doesn't lubricate shit, its super harsh. One of these products can be used when you pull your pistons out of your engine block, the other two you use when your engine is still running.
At 1:27 did anyone catch the Raccoon just hanging out??
(Shakes head) was that a fkn rabid raccoon just kickin it in the back ground....
I did🤣
Pete Bloniasz yes! the Racoon is eating something at 0:36
MAAAAAAA, CALL THE POLICE, THERE'S A WEIRD ASS CAT OUTSIDE
I did too!!!
Remember people nothing but nothing dissolves carbon. This is about removing the general gunk around the carbon so that the carbon is freed to leave the area.
Seems that tetrachloroethylene makes up that particular brake cleaner, a highly effective organic solvent. A quick search on wikipedia reveals that when burned at temperatures over 599 degrees F it can form phosgene a very lethal gas. I wouldn't recommend using this inside an engine or using it where it could be burned. Unfortunate because it seems to work so well.
Thank you for the information, 👍.
Isnt that dry cleaning fluid wich is toxic to internal organs
REALLY? Color of fluids to determine efficacy?? uhh meditate on this... take a guess on why thats not exactly a valid factor... (hint- check out them shop towels)
Are you suggesting the brake parts cleaner be sprayed in the air intake???!!!
I don't want to know what happens when that's being done to the components.
Thanks for taking the time to test these products out. Brake cleaner seems to be champ here. However, I am not sure if you can spray break clean into the engine like the CRC cleaner. You probably could, once it gets into the cylinder it will burn just like the CRC valve and turbo cleaner.
That's what you have to consider. The CRC isn't designed to be used as a solvent like brake cleaner. Brake cleaner is a bit volatile to be spraying into a running engine. The valve cleaner is designed to be sucked in by the vacuum of the engine, and when you're finished you let the engine "hot soak" for an hour and then take it for a drive.
Amsoil Power Foam hands down!
Too slow and lazy video... Unnecessarily delaying to increase the video length..
there was a similar test, the winner was B12 chemtool which clearly removed 90+% of the carbon. HOWEVER, i put a segment of rubber hose in a glass jar with each of the tested fluids. only B12 decomposed the rubber. i think the other fluids were seafoam and mmo.
so, just because a fluid can remove carbon does not mean it is perfectly safe in a vehicle.
LASTLY, please wear gloves!
Gasket remover can clean faster and deeper.
you need a tripod. moving the camera way too much and its not easy viewing. good info though. thanks for sharing.
I was reading and going to try on my 2013 impala today. CRC DI spray recommends getting vehicle to operating temp , then spraying in burst intervals while your car is held at 2k rpm intermittently revving to 3-35k rpm’s to keep it from dying. Then afterwards two revs and waiting then taking on a 10 minute highway drive before letting sit. Of course pulling intake tube and spraying before your MAF into your throttle body.. my only problems I’m thinking is my cat, and my oil , what’s going to be coming out after the cleaning… having cylinders 2,4,6 random misfire codes after changing spark plugs and all coil packs…. Thinking having valve issues but hoping not having to check springs or fuel injectors… ughh
THE BEST IS ATS CARBON CLEAN just pour it in and drive never seen anything better
Nitro thinner is best for soaking,it dissolves carbon like butter
While you're scrubbing the first one the other two are getting to soak longer.
Must be KFC side tubs, or this won't work!
The raccoon is like, “i really need my car back today…”
She should've been changing oil more often 😂
Why didn't you try all 3 mixed together? 😀
Gotta do another test with Amsoil Power Foam.
If I'm gonna pull my pistons I'll just put them in the dishwasher which would probably work better than your method. If not I would just use CRC GDI valve cleaner and follow the manufacturers instructions, which is what other people have done to prove that it really works. Look up the videos.
please do not put them in the dishwasher you use to do the dishes
The raccoon knows the way 🦝
Wow very scientific experiment 🦧
How about trying Chevron Techron as well?
u got a pet raccoon my boy ??
If you want to srew up your rings. Spray the brake cleaner into your engine. It's a degreaser and will remove all the oil on your engine parts.
Try some e85 and some
Gas as a cleaner
None of your cleaners worked. If you want to clean carbon, then get a one gallon container of carburetor chem dip cleaner. Soak parts overnight then rinse off with water.
Parts will have no carbon on them and look brand new.
True but you can’t run that through your engine which is what he is showing
Best and easiest way to get carbon and sludge off parts is plain old oven cleaner, cheap and easy to use. Just don't get it on your skin it's highly caustic. Works in a few minutes to remove sludge and may take a few applications to remove heavy carbon build up. Just hose or jet clean the parts off with water afterwards.
Thank you.
As long as you don’t use it on bare aluminum
U already got one soaking not fair
Those should use in hot engine, not like part cleaner.
If you go back to the beginning of the video and look at the piston's the second and third one from left to right have way more carbon caked on them from what I can see..
Would have been better if the pistons had sum carbon biuld up.
Kerosene works great.
