My Favourite band after hearing the Aja album at 12 - Lyrics that flew over everyone's head, two of the greatest musical story tellers ever - at 58 I am still discovering the depth of their gifts to us ...
This is the best of the best! Fortunate to have seen them live twice. After the first time to see them, the audience sat unmoving and silent for 5 minutes after they left the stage. Unbelievable.
I just got to see Steely Dan this past January in Thousand Palms, CA. where they opened for The Eagles & even though I came to see The Eagles, Steely Dan, captured/captivated me/the audience & blew us all away. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to see Walter Becker while he was still alive. Do you feel sad for the Venezuelan people Ron DeSantis flew to Martha's Vineyard? One of them asked "how much does a hamburger cost here?" $26 dollars was the reply. The Venezuelan said "I'm lucky to make $26 dollars a month in Venezuela." Ron DeSantis did this gentleman a tremendous favor.
Powerful! One of your BEST, Thomas… Boy, for a “studio band,” there certainly (and thankfully!) is a lot of great live performance video available… Thank you, Mr. Eliason! Keep it coming…
Tonight was a good night for some Steely Dan. I haven't listened to them for a while. One of the greatest bands of all time. As has been mentioned, there is no such thing as a bad Steely Dan song. I started listening to them back in college in the late 70's. Their music reminds me of good times hanging out with my fraternity brothers and partying in the dorm room. Hard to believe it was nearly 35 years ago! 35 years! And yet Steely Dan is still as great and relevant as they were back then. Amazing.
I'm sorry, but I have to use my bad-boy language: Just...I mean...what a f*cking GREAT song. Period. When I think about rock at that time, like when this song came out, man...this song and the whole album just blew everything right the f*ck away. Completely. HUGE game changer. I was getting out of college and just got a job as a radio DJ when this came out. Whew. It was stunning. This was like the last album of the "old" steely dan...Aja, Gaucho...and the jazz and solo albums that followed, still all good, but they ain't no Royal Scam. My previous favorite Steely album was Countdown to Ecstacy, one that I first heard when I was maybe in 4th grade or so. I had an older cousin who I idolized who like all this hip music from the day. He turned me on to that one, and later another older friend in my neighborhood gave me an "extra" copy he had. Changed my life. Maybe it changed yours too. I don't know.
Got to relate a recent experience of mine in a pub on the Thames - so some Dan was playing (bab sisters) and the people in there were really responding to what they were hearing, so I asked the barman if he had Aja (which he did) and promptly got bought a few pints from very happy listeners a little later! The great thing was that most of the audience had never experienced anything like this before - I wonder how many are listening now? Love em!

It was unbelievable🤷♀️

I think their best songs are Glamour Profession and Do not Take me Alive, but that's just a personal taste. This one is definitely a classic. They have fantastic songs as you say.
